Plot: There's trouble brewing in a peaceful household when Karen, the 14 year old daughter, starts dating a 21 year old. Her alcoholic single mother is against this idea and wants her to realize that he is wrong for her. Meanwhile her 22 year old brother is the smartest person they know.
Our thoughts: You got me, Josh Deveau. I was gonna dislike this - I knew it just a minute into it. It amused me, but tickled me the wrong way. I've seen independent film going down into pointless silliness and stupidity so many times before, that I wasn't sure I would be able to appreciate this. Just a few minutes after this initiate reaction I fell in love with it. Refreshingly, this was a comedy short that actually managed to deliver its after school special style mockingly without just being annoying.

Dealing with her daughter's love and her own alcoholism is just too much for her mother. Luckily, Karen's 22 year old brother is a perfect, and very smart, guy and he just wants to help his family get along.
This is the plot, and the plot is horrible. The movie, in fact, is quite terrible. I'm sincere about that - but it's funny. It wants to be terrible. I know, it sounds like it's no different from all of those movies I have hated during our years of reviewing, but the difference here is that the comedy delivers. It's as dry as the desert, but it manages to be funny. The lines are just so awkward and stale that I can't help but enjoy it. With lines like "Hey Nathan, it's me, Karen - your girlfriend" you know it's all intentionally, but it's performed sincerely.
I felt that the short took a wrong turn at the 15 minute mark though, when it brings in a serial killer. It still had some amusing jokes beyond that (such as the mother who comes over to tell them her daughter, husband and dog were just killed, and she just wanted to warn them - before she's going to work) but even though the short is stupidity personified it didn't feel right. I would have enjoyed the everyday after school special drama over that random ending. I'm a picky bastard.
Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by "A Weekend (A Very Good Movie)". My initial reaction threw my expectations in the ground and stepped on them, but not long after that I got into the groove of it all. I was actually really entertained by it, Josh Deveau managed to mix deadpan, randomness, poor lines and drama perfectly. It's certainly 20 minutes well spent. All in all, it's funnier than it should be.
