Powerful Exodus

Rabbit Ears Productions did nine biblical adaptations between the years 1991 and 1994 as part of their 80s and 90s takes on literature (whether classic fairytales, stories of American heroes and legends, world stories and of the bible). All the Greatest Stories Ever Told adaptations are well worth watching, as is the company's entire output with the best of them being brilliant. Moses is one of the most iconic characters of the Old Testament so was looking forward to see Rabbit Ears Productions' treatment of his story.

'Moses of Egypt' is for me one of the best Greatest Stories Ever Told adaptations from Rabbit Ears Productions, alongside 'The Savior is Born' and 'Jonah and the Whale'. As said though, all the biblical adaptations from this wonderful and underrated company are well worth the experience and nothing less than that. It is also a great way to be acquainted with the story in an accessible way.

Everything works here. All the Greatest Stories Ever Told adaptations are visually stunning, and 'Moses of Egypt' is no exception. Which is incredibly striking and like looking at meticulously crafted oil paintings or book illustrations with an oil painted look. Especially striking is the harrowing opening sequence, that has a goosebump inducing effect all round.

The music also is a big strength. Was worried as to whether the Gospel style would be appropriate for some parts of this story, it is such an upbeat and beautiful style of music and the story of Moses (not just in Egypt but his entire life) isn't always everybody's definition of upbeat. It turned out actually to be a perfect choice, from the start of when it was used it was very stirring and full of emotional impact and reminded me actually of that Gospel music has more depth to it than what it can be stereotyped as.

Danny Glover, a Rabbit Ears regular, narrates beautifully. With an inspired mix of playful and powerfully distinguished, which is the perfect tone to introduce younger viewers to the story of Moses.

The storytelling was simple and approachable, while not being too simple. It was mature but never too scary, even the still formidable whale. Appreciated its faithfulness too without it being over-stuffed or too wordy. Same with the scripting, which was like bringing the biblical story to life. The opening is very haunting.

Overall, wonderful. 10/10.
