Biotech genius Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe) is behind bars in the first teaser for Unstable Season 2 — well, sort of. He’s training for his seemingly inevitable imprisonment — you know, after the explosive ending of Season 1.
Created by Lowe, his son John Owen Lowe, and Victor Fresco, Unstable follows eccentric entrepreneur Ellis as he reconnects with his estranged son, Jackson (John Owen Lowe), who moves back home to help pull his father out of an emotional freefall. At the end of , a last-minute technological breakthrough saw Ellis narrowly avoid being removed from the board of his own company. Instead, he ousted his friend turned rival, Jean (Christina Chang)... and then blew up her car.
He’ll have to face the music this summer when the series returns for Season 2.

After a strike-related delay, the Environmental Media Association held its 33rd annual awards gala on Saturday, recognizing Hollywood productions for their sustainability efforts both onscreen and behind the scenes. Avatar: The Way of Water, Extrapolations, Unstable and documentary Common Ground were among the night’s winners, with Laura Dern also being recognized with the Ema Ongoing Commitment Award for her activism in the fight against climate change.
At the event, held at Los Angeles’ Sunset Las Palmas Studios, Dern — who narrates and produced Common Ground, which follows the pioneers of the regenerative farming movement and the ways it may save the planet — began her speech by shouting out her collaborators on the film. She also praised her longtime publicist Annett Wolf and those who “walk the walk” like environmental icon Ed Begley Jr.

Hollywood’s historic season of strikes decimated filming in Los Angeles, with the region recording close to the lowest production levels on record.
The decline marks the fourth consecutive quarterly shooting drop, capping off a year in which filming was blocked for over four months. Filming for TV shows, long a mainstay in Los Angeles, saw the steepest dip.
The report from FilmLA reflects the last quarter that accounts for the strikes. The agency said that the three-month period from October to December saw 5,520 shoot days, which represents a roughly 36 percent decline from the same quarter last year. The work stoppages from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA concluded on Sept. 27 and Nov. 9 respectively.
FilmLA noted that the resolution of the strikes “came too late for production to pick up by year’s end,” though runaway production is also a factor. On-location filming in Los Angeles has been continuously declining since 2021 as...

While Netflix awaits Season 2 of its breakout hit “Wednesday,” the latest adaptation of the “Addams Family” franchise, it is already eyeing a way to expand that universe. Armisen first rose to prominence via his sketch comedy roles in “Saturday Night Live” and “Portlandia”; in recent years his TV appearances have included “Barry,” “History of the World, Part II,” “Unstable,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “The Kids in the Hall,” “Our Flag Means Death,” “Schmigadoon,” “Moonbase 8” and “Shrull.

A list of the 10 best TV performances of the year could be filled exclusively with actors from Succession, Reservation Dogs and Beef, the top three shows shared by both of our Best of 2023 lists. But what fun would that be? You already know that Sarah Snook and Devery Jacobs and Steven Yeun are great. Or you should.
That’s why, when Angie and I set out to do this list, we started with the simple rule: “Nothing from either of our Top 10 lists.” Those performances and those shows have been celebrated amply, and we wanted to cover as many of the year’s standouts as possible.

Streaming giant Netflix has always said that the decisions whether to renew a show or not are based on performance vs. cost. The release today of What We Watched, a Netflix report on global viewed hours for 18,000 titles — original and licensed — from January to June of 2023 provides context on the calls the streamer made for seasons that debuted during that period.

Netflix is staying in business with Dragon, renewing its father-son comedy Unstable for an eight-episode second season, TVLine has learned.
Unstable stars Rob Lowe as Ellis Dragon, a “universally admired, eccentric, narcissist-adjacent biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place,” per Netflix’s official logline. To complicate matters further, Dragon is in an “emotional free-fall,” and his only hope may rest in his polar-opposite son Jackson Dragon (played by Lowe’s real-life son John Owen Lowe).

Unstable, the Netflix comedy starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, is heading back into production for its second season with a new showrunner.
Andrew Gurland, creator of FX’s Married, has replaced Victor Fresco as showrunner for the second season of the series after its renewal by Netflix for another eight episodes.
Production will begin later this month after it was interrupted by the writers strike back in May. Production on the second season started in late March and shut down at the start of May.
Unstable follows an introverted son (John Owen Lowe) who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father (Rob Lowe) in order to save him and his successful biotech company from disaster. It is inspired by Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often humorously trolls his dad.

Producer Jason Blum believes what sets Five Nights at Freddy’s apart from other adaptations is “the care that was taken with the story to create something based on a beloved game.” Universal Pictures’ new featurette is dedicated to the game’s fans, and director/co-writer Emma Tammi says that every creative decision they made was with the goal of doing justice to the game and its massive fan base.
Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail lead the cast of the horror film. Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost), Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot), and Matthew Lillard also star.
Scott Cawthon created the Five Night at Freddy’s game and is involved as a writer and producer. Seth Cuddeback also co-wrote the screenplay, with Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Christopher H. Warner executive producing. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop created the film’s animatronic characters.

Rob Lowe has appeared on countless hit TV shows throughout his career.
While he's currently starring on both 9-1-1: Lone Star and Unstable, the actor is opening up about why he left The West Wing.
On Wednesday's installment of the Podcrushed podcast, the actor revealed he felt "very undervalued" while starring as Sam Seaborn.
"It happens in any workplace," he affirmed.
"You can be in an environment where people sandbag you, wanna see you fail, don't appreciate you — whatever it is."
"Whenever I share my stories, people are like, 'I will never share my own stories again' because they would make your hair stand on end," he added.
Lowe revealed that there were some hints about his time on the NBC political drama in his 2011 memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends.

9-1-1 Lone Star‘s Rob Lowe has been opening up about his time working on the NBC drama The West Wing, explaining why he chose to leave after the fourth season. Appearing on the Stitcher Studios podcast Podcrushed (recorded before the SAG strike), the Unstable star was candid about his experiences on the hit political drama, comparing it to “a super unhealthy relationship.” “I did not have a good experience,” he told Penn Badgley and his co-hosts, admitting that he “tried to make it work” but couldn’t put his issues aside. “Then what happened was my kids were getting to a certain age where I could see them having first girlfriends or friends and being in a relationship that was abusive and taking it,” Lowe continued. “She’s the popular girl; everybody likes her, she’s beautiful, it must be great. All the things that people would say...

Tell us how you really feel about your time on The West Wing, Rob Lowe.
Lowe played deputy communications director Sam Seaborn for the first four seasons of the NBC political drama. But he surprisingly left after Season 4, even though the show was a smash hit having won four consecutive Outstanding Drama Series Emmys during that stretch.
At the time, Lowe’s exit was crafted as a professional decision based on the character having less to do. But there apparently may have been more to it.
In a podcast interview with Stitcher Studios’ Podcrushed, Lowe had a few choice words about his time on the show. He said leaving was “the best thing I ever did” and called it “a super unhealthy relationship.”

“Law & Order” fans, you have Rob Lowe to thank for the entire franchise. As does Dick Wolf’s bank account. At least, Lowe says this, with his tongue a bit in cheek (but also with some accuracy). As the star of Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” and Netflix’s “Unstable” recently told Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Lowe starred in Wolf’s 1988 feature flop “Masquerade.” It was just the kind of movie disappointment that would have sent Wolf back to TV — and two years later, “Law & Order” premiered. “I remember him saying to me how frustrated he was in the movie business, that he was going to write a pilot,” Lowe said. “And he wrote ‘Law and Order.’ And the rest is history. You’re welcome. Yeah, I’m happy to provide the bomb that powers your rise to dominance.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge may have been the star of her seminal comedy series “Fleabag” but Sian Clifford, who played Fleabag’s semi-unstable sister, Claire, proved herself an equally gifted comedic performer. Clifford has since put that status to good use in “Quiz,” “Inside No. 9,” and “See How They Run.” Now, she stars opposite Rob and John Owen Lowe in Netflix’s “Unstable.”
“Unstable,” reportedly inspired by John Owen’s trolling of his father Rob, follows the former as a son forced to work for the biological research company that his father, the latter, runs. However, the father, grieving from the recent death of his wife of 30 years, has become eccentric and erratic and is more focused on activities such as sunbathing naked in his office rather than running Dragon, his company. Clifford plays Anna, the CFO of Dragon, and she tries her hardest to protect her boss from other employees and himself.

“It’s a unique look at this relatable relationship,” reveals John Owen Lowe about “Unstable” in our recent webchat. He continues, “A parent is always going to irritate their child and give them a hard time. It just so happens that I grew up with a parent who was in the public eye, so no-one ever agreed with me when I tried to tell people he was wildly irritating. There was something very funny about the dichotomy of that. We wanted to make a show about it, so people could laugh, relate and also go, ‘this situation is a little bit funky, isn’t it?’” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Loot is the latest series to have production shut down.
The Apple TV+ series, which stars Maya Rudolph, was in production on its second season but WGA picketers have caused studio Universal Television to pause production at its Bel-Air location.
It joins series such as HBO Max’s Hacks, Showtime’s Billions, Netflix’s Unstable and Starz’ The Venery of Samantha Bird, which have all shut down production.
It comes on the fourth day of the WGA strike, which has seen thousands of writers take to the streets of Hollywood and New York in protest to the studios’ offer.
Loot was renewed for a second season last year.
It stars Rudolph Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Joel Kim Booster, Nat Faxon, Ron Funches and Stephanie Styles.
Created, written and executive produced by Yang and Hubbard, in Loot, Rudolph stars as billionaire Molly Novak, who has a dream life, complete with private jets,...

On this week’s episode* Rob Lowe tells some seriously juicy stories—of growing up in Malibu, losing his girlfriend to Warren Beatty, and why he was deeply unpopular with the mothers at his son’s school. And that’s just the start…
Among other musings, anecdotes and memories, we also discuss the space-time continuum, and Lowe recalls an otherworldly, transcendent experience he had, inspired by his dear friend, the late, great Bill Paxton.
Along with John Owen, the younger of his two sons, Lowe co-created and stars in Netflix comedy Unstable, which has currently paused production of its second season due to the writers’ strike. The show follows an eccentric biotech entrepreneur whose introverted musician son is forced to step in and save him and his company from disaster.

“It’s the perfect amount of heavy lifting as an actor and easy gliding into certain elements of myself,” reveals Rob Lowe about his role in “Unstable.” For our recent webchat he continues, “For most actors the roles that work the best meet that mathematical equation. Just enough of them where it couldn’t really be played by anybody else, but a large amount of acting required.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Lowe created the new Netflix comedy “Unstable” with his son John Owen Lowe and Victor Fresco. He explains, “Our influences in creating the show were those classic straight comedies that only wanted to entertain you, to make you laugh in a smart and unexpected way; not in the business of being edgy; not in the business of being dramedies.”
SEESian Clifford interview: ‘Unstable’
For the program, Lowe plays Ellis, the eccentric CEO and founder of a biotechnology company.

Exclusive: Starz’ The Venery of Samantha Bird has shut down production as a result of the writers strike.
Deadline understands that the drama series has paused filming with two episodes of its eight episode order left to shoot. The series shoots in Montreal.
It comes after Netflix’s Rob Lowe comedy series Unstable and HBO Max’s Hacks were shut down for similar reasons and writers rooms for shows such as Starz’ Power Book III: Raising Kanan, NBC’s Night Court, Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Showtime’s Yellowjackets and ABC’s Abbott Elementary also closed their writing rooms.
The series stars Katherine Langford in the title role and was created by Anna Moriarty.
It follows Samantha Bird, who, while visiting family in New England, Samantha Bird reconnects with her childhood sweetheart and falls headlong into a seemingly perfect storybook romance. But underneath their fever dream lurks a more unsettling interpretation of this affair.

Netflix’s Beef enjoyed a strong first week in Nielsen’s streaming rankings, coming close to the billion-minute mark in viewing time. The Night Agent cooled off some but spent a third week at No. 1 overall, and The Mandalorian improved for the second week in a row.
Beef, starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, drew 962 million minutes of viewing time for the week of April 3-9 (it premiered April 6). The show, which earned widespread critical praise, finished fourth overall for the week. (The series also sparked controversy when past remarks about sexual assault by co-star David Choe resurfaced. Choe later said he made up the story, and Wong and Yeun said in an April 21 statement that they “do not condone this story in any way” while adding they have seen Choe seek support “to better himself and learn from his mistakes.”)
