Blue Ruin is a barebones thriller that takes the motivations of revenge to the psyche of non-killers. Echoing the lawless nature of a western, the film from writer/director Jeremy Saulnier follows a broken man named by Dwight (Macon Blair) as he learns firsthand about the capacity for violence, by ways of self-defense and in offense aggression. His act of revenge against someone who hurt his family 17 years ago begins a cycle of violence that threatens to destroy two entire families.
Saulnier had directed one movie previously, 2007′s Murder Party. In between that feature, he was the director of photography for acclaimed indies like Putty Hill, In Our Nature, and I Used To Be Darker.
I sat down with Saulnier in an exclusive interview where we discuss the film’s rules of violence, his new understanding about race in the film market, the strong women that surround him, and more.

Congratulations! Zach is officially off the market, as he married Kiele on Saturday Dec. 29 in Napa Valley!
Friday Night Lights star Zach Gilford, 30, wed Glades star Kiele Sanchez, 36, on Dec. 29!
The couple met in early 2010 while they were costarring in the ABC pilot The Matadors, however, it was never picked up to series.
“She is the most amazing woman in the world,” Zach told Us Weekly of Kiele during the Television Critics Association Summer Press Tour in 2012.
In July, Zach revealed to E! News that the couple’s wedding plans were “magical.”
“We set a date,” he said. “We found a magical, magical place to get married and I’m excited. It is going to be cool.”
This is Zach’s first marriage and the second for Kiele, who is divorced from writer and film director Zach Helm.
Zach is best known for playing quarterback Matt Saracen on NBC’s Friday Night Lights.

I didn't even realize that this was already out in theaters, although in a very limited release, playing on just one screen in the entire country. It looks like it may be gone from theaters. But don't fret, if you were interested in seeing it, because it'll be released on home video in early February. So you don't have very long to wait. Cinedigm and New Video acquired domestic (USA) distribution rights to In Our Nature, which premiered this year at the SXSW Film Festival, earlier this year. Gabrielle Union co-stars in this indie dramedy, alongside Jena Malone, Zach Gilford and John Slattery,...

What's the nature of In Our Nature? Smart but rather dull, like a sophisticated person who needs better stories to tell.
I had hoped the producers of Meek's Cutoff and Wendy and Lucy -- two of my favorite quiet little movies -- would deliver another entertaining and keenly observant film with In Our Nature. But while Vincent Savino and Anish Savjani's new film says some compelling things about human relationships, it suffers from a plodding pace and only mildly interesting narrative.
In Our Nature is set entirely in an upstate New York weekend home, where young Brooklynites Seth (Zach Gilford) and Andie (Jena Malone) hope to spend a romantic weekend. Shortly after they arrive, Seth's long-estranged father, Gil (John Slattery), who owns the house, shows up unexpectedly with his much-younger girlfriend, Vicky (Gabrielle Union). Tempers flare immediately, as Seth and Gil blame each other for the scheduling mix-up.

The indie drama In Our Nature, which premiered at SXSW in March, returns to Austin on Friday for a theatrical run. The movie stars Jena Malone, Gabrielle Union, Zach Gilford and John Slattery.
Look for Don's review this afternoon -- among other things, he's says it's "an astute film with much to say about family dynamics." It's about a father and son spending a weekend with their respective partners at a vacation home in upstate New York.
We have two pairs of tickets to give away to see In Our Nature at Regal Arbor 8. You can use these tickets to attend any screening of the movie at the Arbor from Monday 12/17 through Thursday 12/20. Tickets must be redeemed at the box office and seating is subject to availability.
If you can't wait for Monday and want to see the movie this weekend, I recommend going to the 7:30 pm screenings on...

Sometimes you're just in the mood for a low-budget, four-character indie film in which a few flawed but very relatable folks deal with their low-key stresses, concerns, and issues in a way that, at the very least, rings true and, in the best cases, offers a viewer something that feels personal and familiar. The low-key but smoothly accessible In Our Nature is definitely one of those films. First-time writer/director Brian Savelson is interested in little more than presenting a story about a strained relationship between a father and his grown son, and how it begins to heal with some integral help from two very smart women. Seth is a popular musician who brings his longtime girlfriend to the rarely-used family cabin. Their fun is interrupted...

More likely than not, you know Zach Gilford best as Matt Saracen from "Friday Night Lights."
But, when he's not wearing a football uniform – or hospital scrubs, as the case has been on his subsequent television shows, "Off the Map" and this season's "Mob Doctor" – you might just find him in the woods. The 30-year-old actor considers himself an outdoorsman, spending his free time hiking, camping and the like, which worked out perfectly for his latest foray onto the big screen, "In Our Nature."
The movie follows Gilford's Seth and his girlfriend Andie (Jena Malone) as they head to Seth's "cabin" in upstate New York. Little do they know that Seth's somewhat estranged father ("Mad Men"'s John Slattery) and his city mouse girlfriend (Gabrielle Union) have similar plans. Needless to say, significant awkwardness ensues.

We once thought only in our dreams would Roger Sterling play father to Matt Saracen. But In Our Nature is as close as we'll get for now. The film, which opens today in New York and Austin, stars John Slattery and Zach Gilford as an estranged father and son who, unbeknownst to each other, both head up to the family cabin with their respective girlfriends at the same time. Slattery's character Gil and Vicky (Gabrielle Union) show up as Gilford's Seth and Andie (played by Jena Malone) are about to enjoy some cabin coitus, and that's only the beginning of the awkwardness. We caught up with the guys recently and learned about how they passed the time together in the woods for a month during filming (Union's boyfriend Dwyane Wade visited and lost to Gilford in Words With Friends) and whether we'll ever see the two reunite on Mad Men.

We've hit an early December lull at multiplexes this weekend as we prepare for the onslaught of big holiday blockbusters that will soon be here. The only major release in theatres this week is the Gerard Butler rom-com Playing for Keeps, although End of Watch is also returning to a significant number of theatres for an awards season run. Does it really have a shot at an Oscar? It seems like a bit of a stretch to me. In select theatres, look for Bill Murray playing Fdr in Hyde Park on Hudson, which has been getting pretty disappointing reviews, along with Lay the Favorite starring Bruce Willis and Deadfall starring Eric Bana. If that's not enough, we've also got a South Korean Twilight rip-off called A Werewolf Boy. What will you be watching this weekend? Playing for Keeps End of Watch (re-release) Lay the Favorite (limited) Hyde Park on Hudson...

If it weren’t for dysfunctional relationships, independent films might never have any stories to tell. “In Our Nature” is the latest in a long line of small-scale films about children who don’t get along with their parents, and the terms both come to in the process of a shared experience that throws them together – in predictably unwitting fashion, of course. But solid performances from the central quartet of actors, including Zack Gilford, Jena Malone, John Slattery and Gabrielle Union elevate Brian Savelson’s debut as a writer and director despite its familiarity as not just a story but almost an entire cinematic subgenre. Gilford (“Friday Night Lights”) and Malone (“Sucker Punch”) play Seth and Andie, a young couple from Brooklyn that drives up in the woods for a getaway in his family’s lake house. Shortly after they arrive, Seth’s dad Gil (Slattery) shows up with his girlfriend Vicky (Union) in tow,...

This weekly column is intended to provide reviews of nearly every new release, including films on VOD (and in certain cases some studio releases). If you're like us, you love the holiday season, but kinda wish you could spend it in Dillon, Texas, with the Taylor family.
Actually, this year, you almost can. Coach himself, Kyle Chandler, stars in "Argo" and "Zero Dark Thirty," while Mrs. Coach Connie Britton graces the big screen in "The Fitzgerald Family Christmas." As for the young-uns, you've probably already caught Tyra Collette (Adrianne Palicki) in theaters in "Red Dawn" and might want to make a date to see Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) in "In Our Nature" this month.
In fact, why wait to get a good look at them? We figured it was time to pay homage to the (incredibly attractive) cast of "Friday Night Lights" as they're about to see their names in lights for real. And, thus, we were inspired to create this gallery of the "Friday Night Lights" gang in movies, past, present and future.

Forces of Nurture: Savelson’s Debut an Understated Ensemble of Well Tread Angst
For his feature film debut, Brian Savelson has acquired an impressive four person ensemble that examines everything from parent and child relationships, round two families, and even a nod to Chekov with some estate squabbles. There’s a definite sense, that only deepens as In Our Nature reaches its last lap, that this is familiar territory, a quartet of characters constantly undermining or over compensating in their surroundings as they navigate the miasma of the dysfunctional family discourse. While this doesn’t detract from Savelson’s well-written scenario, per se, there are several moments where we get lost in really caring how or why any of these people will ever resolve their personal issues.

It's fun when actors from favorite TV shows intermingle in movies. Remember how exciting it was to see both Walter White and Coach Taylor in Argo? In In Our Nature, which comes out this weekend in New York and Austin, Roger Sterling (John Slattery) plays the dad of Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford). (Hopefully this dad's face remains intact.) The film revolves around a wild weekend in which both the estranged father and son bring their respective girlfriends to their vacation home. In this clip, that old dog Sterling shares an expectedly too-flirtatious moment with Saracen's girlfriend (played by Jena Malone) over a marijuana cigarette. A man does a little LSD and now it's Woodstock 24/7.

Though he is best known for his role as the lovable Matt Saracen on "Friday Night Lights," Zach Gilford is popping up everywhere these days.
Not only is he leading Fox's freshman drama "The Mob Doctor" alongside Jordana Spiro, but Gilford is also co-starring in the new inside film "In Our Nature," opposite John Slattery.
Gilford took a few minutes to talk to HuffPost about his new film, the trouble "The Mob Doctor" is in and Mitt Romney's use of the famous "Friday Night Lights" slogan in his 2012 campaign.
So "The Mob Doctor" just got its last four episodes ...
Pushed up? It's just because people are so excited to see them! [Laughs]. You know, it is what it is. I grew up in Chicago, which is where we shoot, so it was fun shooting there. It's just such a cool town. The crew is amazing, and our cast is a really good group of people.

John Slattery may be busy filming top-secret "Mad Men" and "Arrested Development" episodes, but that doesn't mean one of the biggest names in TV doesn't have time for a movie every now and then.
In honor of his new indie film "In Our Nature," in which he stars as an estranged father who runs into his son (Zach Gilford) at the family's retreat unintentionally (with girlfriends in tow), Slattery sat down with HuffPost TV to discuss working with "Friday Night Light" alum Zach Gilford, his role on "Arrested Development," and watching his wife Talia Basman on "Homeland."
Let's talk "Mad Men." Were you upset you didn't get to go to Hawaii?
I was. I like Hawaii. We were going to show up in Hawaiian shirts and crash it.
Aren't you part of a celebrity surfing club?
Well no, there's no club ... I just like to surf a lot. And occasionally there's a charity thing.

As Mad Men’s silver-haired Roger Sterling, John Slattery is debonair, drunken, sexy, competitive, and sentimental. He’s also, at times, a complete goof.
In writer/director Brian Savelson’s feature debut, In Our Nature, out in theaters Dec. 7, Slattery plays Gil, the estranged dad of Seth, a bearded hipster played by Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights). When Seth brings his girlfriend, Andie, played by Jena Malone (Pride & Prejudice), to his family’s upstate New York retreat for a romantic getaway weekend, Gil shows up to the house as well — with his new, younger girlfriend Vicky, played by Gabrielle Union.

A warning to Friday Night Lights fans: the clean shaven Zach Gilford you came to know and love as quarterback of the Dillon Panthers will look just a little bit different when you see him next. Writer/director Brian Savelson‘s In Our Nature features a ton of pithy bits of wisdom. Along with John Slattery, Gabrielle Union, Jena Malone and Zach Gilford, these poetic nuggets are on display in the film’s trailer which also promises family tension and vegan-bashing. In the film, an estranged father and son accidentally bring their girlfriends to the family cabin on the same weekend, causing friction and confrontation for a group with a lot of issues to work through (and more than a few clever turns of phrase). Get ready to bite-sized chunks of insight and check out the trailer for yourself: In Our Nature hits limited theaters this December.

Indie films sure love family dramas set in isolated locales – and today we bring you a new trailer for a film that fits right into that mold. In Our Nature looks to be following the bittersweet formula to a T in this new clip – and while the tale of a father and son (and their significant others) bumping into each other at a remote cabin seems pretty familiar, we’re still interested in seeing the finished feature. The cast alone, including Mad Men’s John Slattery and The Hunger Games’ Jena Malone makes this clip worth a look. Here’s a plot breakdown for the project followed by the trailer. Way back at this year's SXSW Festival in March, there was a little indie film called "In Our Nature" which had critics and audiences buzzing. This being the movie business, though, all of that buzz led to months of deal making and distribution setup and hemming and hawing and this and that and whatever. But no actual movie in theaters for you to see.
Well, that is finally about to change, as "In Our Nature" is at last set to arrive next month. And what better way to celebrate than by releasing a new trailer?

Gabrielle Union co-stars in this indie dramedy, alongside Jena Malone, Zach Gilford and John Slattery, which was directed by Brian Savelson, from his own screenplay. In Our Nature centers on the relationship between an estranged father and son. Thanks to a mistake in their schedules, the son brings his...

For five seasons on "Mad Men," 50-year-old silver fox John Slattery has played an advertising honcho with a penchant for much younger women. In the upcoming indie "In Our Nature" (out in select theaters December 7), the actor plays a guy with a similar yearning for the younger set, but if the recently released trailer for the family drama is anything to go by, this couldn't be further removed from the hit AMC show. "In Our Nature" centers on Brooklynite Seth (Zach Gilford), who takes his girlfriend Andie (Jena Malone) to his family's weekend house in upstate New York for a romantic getaway. Slattery plays Seth's estranged father Gil, who surprises the two when he shows up that same weekend with his much-younger new partner, Vicky (Gabrielle Union). The promising trailer hints at a heart warming time at the movies, with plently of family strife to keep things interesting. Watch below:...

We know the break between "Mad Men" seasons can be difficult, but luckily, the always solid John Slattery is keeping his chops honed on the big screen as well. And "In Our Nature" offers another chance to see the actor in top form alongside an equally game cast. Co-starring Jena Malone, Zach Gilford and Gabrielle Union, the story takes place over a single weekend when a romantic getaway between some young lovers is interrupted when the boyfriend's father shows up at the family cabin with a new girlfriend on his arm. And the result is certainly something a bit unexpected and fresh. The film premiered to good reviews at SXSW this past spring, and it's now making its way to screens around the country. Here's the official synopsis: Synopsis: When Brooklynite Seth (Zach Gilford, Friday Night Lights) takes his girlfriend Andie (Jena Malone, Into The Wild, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire...

Premiering at SXSW earlier this year, In Our Nature sees writer-director Brian Savelson making his feature debut, and he’s assembled a fine cast for the occasion.
The film centres around four people – Jena Malone (Donnie Darko), John Slattery (Mad Men), Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights), and Gabrielle Union (Think Like A Man) – and after catching what was described as a trailer back in March, but was really more of a first clip, we’ve now got the first theatrical trailer, courtesy of Yahoo Movies, along with the first poster.
“A portrait of two couples at a crossroads. What was supposed to be a romantic getaway for two young lovers, turns into an uncomfortable confrontation when the young man’s estranged father shows up … with his own girlfriend. A quiet, nearly plot-free drama enlivened by beautifully nuanced performances by its four-person leading ensemble, In Our Nature depicts familiar dysfunctional family dynamics with a welcome lack of melodrama. Centering on a painful weekend endured by two couples including an estranged father and son, writer/director Brian Savelson’s film features the sort of astute, well-observed characterizations that lift it above the indie pack. Young couple Seth (Zach Gilford, of Friday Night Lights) and Andie (Jena Malone) to travel an upstate New York vacation house that has been in Seth’s family for years for what they assume will be

By Sean O’Connell Hollywoodnews.com: David O. Russell’s Oscar contender “The Silver Linings Playbook” will open The 2012 Savannah Film Festival, an annual event that this year will showcase similar awards contenders like Robert Zemeckis’ “Flight,” Dustin Hoffman’s “Quartet,” the crowd-pleasing musical comedy “The Sapphires” and Michael Haneke’s emotionally draining “Amour.” The fest will kick off on Saturday, Oct. 27. It also will conclude with a 3D screening of DreamWorks Animation’s holiday blockbuster “Rise of the Guardians.” Russell’s comedy has been building awards momentum since it took home the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. The Hollywood Film Awards announced so far that it will recognize Robert De Niro with the “Hollywood Supporting Actor” award, as well as Russell with this year’s “Hollywood Director Award.” Expect them to be the first of many prestigious award nominations “Silver Linings” picks...

Breaking news, you guys. Jena Malone has been cast as the one and only Johanna Mason in the highly anticipated Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire. She will be joining the actually-awesome cast of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Wood Harrleson and Elizabeth Banks. Way to blow, Hunger Games casters. You ruined a future franchise by casting someone that was even insufferable in the early 2000s.

Actually, I wrote about the underwhelming actress way back in the day when I wrote about this movie In Our Nature. But more importantly isn't Johanna supposed to be a crafty bombshell? What happened to the pretty-legit rumor of Mia Wasikowska and Zoe Aggelicki. Then frickin' Jena Malone came out of nowhere. Ugh. I'm still hoping this is a joke and Naya Rivera is still being considered.
Then again, Johanna's whole deal is working the fact that people underestimate her.

In Our Nature
Director & Screenwriter: Brian Savelson
Taking place over a single weekend, an estranged father and son accidentally end up in the same country house with their two girlfriends.
Cast: Zach Gilford, Jena Malone, John Slattery, Gabrielle Union
(World Premiere)
Film Synopsis (from SXSW.com)
Who’S It For?: If you like John Slattery, don’t miss this one. If you like Gabrielle Union when she’s actually acting, don’t miss this one. If you’re interested in seeing a dialogue-driven movie that rarely feels boring, definitely don’t miss this one.
Overall
At SXSW this year there were many notable victories in acting, writing, and directing, but no movie achieved such a hat trick more impressively than In Our Nature. It is such a strong movie that it features four people talking about their problems, and it’s actually really exciting.

John Slattery is a man in demand.
The actor just wrapped production on an independent feature in Maine, had a different film premiere at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas last week and is on a busy press tour for the upcoming season of “Mad Men,” which returns to AMC on March 25.
“Mad Men” is the trickiest of the three to promote, says Slattery, per show creator Matthew Weiner’s strict edict against spoilers.

In Our Nature is a strong debut feature by Brian Savelson. There is a trend this year (and somewhat last year with Sophia Takal’s Green) of people in their late 20’s/early 30’s retreating back to nature. Consider the opening night feature, The Cabin in the Woods, along with the ground I’ve covered thus far: In Our Nature, Leave Me Like You Found Me, Pilgrim Song and Eating Alabama. With these examples, we can read an economic condition into these films: none of these hipsters are wealthy, floating from situation to situation.
In Our Nature opens as Seth (Zach Gilford) and Andie (Jenna Malone) retreat from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to a cabin in the woods of upstate New York. This simple romantic getaway is interrupted by Seth’s father Gil (John Slattery) and new girlfriend Vicky (Gabriella Union). If the definition of conflict is more than one person in the same county,...

SXSW always has a fairly high nerd pedigree, with genre films, broad comedies, and outrageous midnight movies often claiming much of the spotlight. But you can see just as many wonderful, small-scale dramas at the Austin festival (we saw "Beginners" there for the first time last year, for instance) and it seems to be a good place where these types of films can be nurtured alongside the splashier SXSW fare. One of these movies in 2012 is "In Our Nature," a kind of outdoor chamber piece starring Zach Gilford, Jena Malone, John Slattery and Gabrielle Union. We talked to first time writer/director Brian Savelson about what it was like pulling together his debut feature, paying homage to couples-going-to-a-cabin-in-the-woods movies, what the movie has in common with French dramas, and what it's like having his "big premiere" at SXSW.

Part musical festival, part film festival, part tech-head confab, SXSW is a unique event in the pop-culture firmament, bringing massive stars and indie up-and-comers in music, movies, and tech together in the Texas hill country of Austin. Running from March 9-17, the film festival has especially expanded its profile in the last few years: The 2011 SXSW fest featured premieres of Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, the doc Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Source Code, the sci-fi comedy Paul, and the eventually Oscar-winning feature documentary Undefeated.

Premiering this month at SXSW, writer-director Brian Savelson looks like he could make a fantastic feature debut with In Our Nature, assembling a terrific cast headed up by Jena Malone (Donnie Darko), John Slattery (TV’s Mad Men), Zach Gilford (TV’s Friday Night Lights), and Gabrielle Union (the upcoming Good Deeds and Think Like A Man).
With four showings on the 10th, 11th, 12th, and 15th March at the SXSW film festival, if you’re lucky enough to be there at the end of this week, this should definitely be on your list of films to try and see.

Brian Savelson’s feature debut In Our Nature focuses on a young couple whose weekend getaway takes a u-turn when the young man’s father and his girlfriend show up to their vacation home un-expectedly. While Sundance still gets the headlines, the last few years have seen the film strand of South By Southwest, the Austin, Texas cultural conference, become just as vital to the movie world as Robert Redford's baby. The past few festivals alone witnessed some of the best movies of their respective years debut, from low-budget indies like "The Puffy Chair," "Beeswax," "Tiny Furniture" and "Cold Weather" to more mainstream fare like "I Love You Man," "Adventureland" and "Bridesmaids," to international genre hits like "Kill List," "Attack The Block" and "Monsters."
