In honor of Jimmy Fallon's premiere as host of "The Tonight Show," videos of his early days are going viral online -- watch his "Saturday Night Live" audition here. But the absolute best is the video above, of Fallon's first stand-up performance.
The gig is at Bananas Comedy Club in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. As Fallon said on the season premiere of "Inside Comedy," it was a radio contest where entrants had two minutes to do a stand-up act and could win a cash prize. Fallon's call was doing a commercial for Troll Dolls in various impressions, like John Travolta, Cliff Clavin from "Cheers," Rocky Balboa, Rocky from "Bullwinkle" and Pee Wee Herman.
Fallon won the contest and the $700 prize, which he said seemed like a huge amount of money to the 17-year-old budding comedian.

Created by comic David Steinberg and executive produced by Steve Carell, "Inside Comedy" began as a documentary that outgrew the bounds of a feature running time and became instead of a half-hour Showtime series that's now on its third season of Steinberg interviewing comedians and other funny people about their process, careers and influences. Showtime's put the third season premiere online -- it features Jimmy Fallon and Zach Galifianakis, with Jonah Hill, Alan Arkin, Bette Midler, Richard Belzer, Andrew Dice Clay and Kevin Nealon slated to appear later in the season. David Steinberg may not be a household name, but it is a name that means a great deal to anyone in the world of comedy. Indeed, Steinberg -- the host of Showtime's Inside Comedy, which is now vying for a nomination for the outstanding variety, music or comedy series Emmy -- is essentially the genre's Kevin Bacon, a guy who knows and/or has worked with everyone, and, just as importantly, a guy who virtually everyone who knows and/or has worked with him likes. Looks like we wont have to wait as long to see the return of Dexter! Showtime has announced that the series will return to TV earlier than normal. Season 8 will premiere on June 30th at 9pm, and will serve as a lead-in for the cable networks new crime drama Ray Donovan. It was previously a lead in to Homeland. I've also heard that Season 8 will in also be the last season of the show, which is sad, but we knew it would eventually have to come to an end.
The early return of the series has not affected production on Dexter. Showtime entertainment president David Nevins said, “There is no less production time, just a little less vacation time between the seasons.” He also said that the drama’s producers and cast had received enough lead time to adjust to the scheduling changes.

"Homeland" is Showtime's shiny new success story, but at a press event Monday, entertainment president David Nevins spent a fair amount of time talking about shows that are ending, or might be ending relatively soon.

Over 40 years experience as a well-known, well-respected comedian, has led David Steinberg back to the subject he loves most: comedy. On the new series "Inside Comedy," Steinberg has taken over a year of his life to interview many of the top comics past and present. "The surprise to us was that everybody said yes," said Steinberg in a video chat with Gold Derby. "Putting it together was a puzzle that was pleasurable but just took a long time." Steve Carell has co-produced the 10-episode program currently airing on Showtime. In editing together the interviews, Steinberg said that it was interesting how he could pair up the various subjects even though they didn't sit down together for their chats. He would find certain topics, like performing with Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lewis, and Sammy Davis, Jr. (discussed separately by Brad Garrett, Martin Short, and Billy Crystal) or Presidential performances (discussed months apart by Jerry Seinf.

Mel Brooks sat down with David Steinberg on "Inside Comedy" (Thu., 11 p.m. Est on Showtime) and joked about how he's "made a fine living from Nazis!"
Brooks' biggest hit was his Oscar-winning 1968 film, "The Producers."
It followed the fortunes of two Jewish theatrical agents in New York who planned to bilk investors of their money with a sure-fire musical flop about Hitler and the Nazis. Unfortunately for Bialystock and Bloom, the musical is a smash hit.
Featuring singing and dancing Nazis and numbers like "Springtime For Hitler," it's since developed a life of its own as a hit Broadway musical and then a second film, this time of the stage version.
Why did Brooks decide to use Hitler as comedic fodder?
"The only way to get even with anybody is to ridicule them," he said. "So, the only real way I could get even with Hitler and company was...

Sarah Silverman was David Steinberg's guest on "Inside Comedy" (Thu., 11 p.m. Est on Showtime) Thursday night.
Steinberg asked the "Jesus Is Magic" star about her early material. Was there one piece that really got her started in stand-up?
In response Silverman told one of her earliest jokes. Although she wrote it in high school, she used it in her act after she moved to New York and hit the comedy circuit.
When a friend asked if her breath smelled like tacos, Silverman inhaled and said "I don't know. Do you put sh*t in your tacos?"
"Inside Comedy" airs Thursdays at 11 p.m. Est on Showtime.

Larry David sat down with David Steinberg on "Inside Comedy" (Thurs., 11 p.m. Est on Showtime) and reminisced about working as a writer on "Saturday Night Live" back in the day.
David remembered one particular Friday when he was so incensed that his sketches kept being cut from that week's live show that he lost it. Having decided that enough was enough, a "disgusted" David walked up to the producers and yelled "That's it! I quit!"
However, after talking it through with his next-door neighbor, the legendary Kenny Kramer, David reconsidered his position. In the end he took Kramer's advice to just go back to the "SNL" offices on the following Monday morning and pretend like nothing had happened.
Amazingly, everyone else also acted like it had never happened and so he kept his job.

Billy Crystal will be hosting the 2012 Academy Awards on Sunday, February 26 and on "Inside Comedy" (Thurs., 11 p.m. Est on Showtime) he opened up about the stress caused by such a high-profile gig.
Fan favorite Crystal stepped up as Oscars host after director Brett Ratner withdrew as producer of the telecast and previously announced host Eddie Murphy quit.
The veteran comic has hosted the Oscars so many times now, it should be a cake walk, right? Maybe not.
He told David Steinberg that he took a break from doing it because while he liked doing it for most of the time, it encroached on his life too much each year.
"It became months and months of work and after a while it becomes sort of a thankless job. I didn't know what else I could do with it. ... I got burnt out."
Tune in to see if Crystal does wind...

Good morning!
On last night's Jersey Shore, Vinny struck out when he hit on a lesbian. I wouldn't blame the girl if she just said she was a lesbian so she could get away from him.
Jackie Warner is like the Suze Orman of diets and fitness. Only read what she has to say if you want to get a smackdown. Sugar? Denied.
Out performer LP performed at the Grammy Foundation Show last night and it sounds like she tore the house down. I can't wait to hear her new album. Here she is on the red carpet with Malin Akerman.
Apparently the new Marie Antoinette themed film Farewell, My Queen has some lesbian undertones to it. A reporter at Berlin's Film Fest asked star Diane Kruger if she thinks Marie was gay. Her response:
The way [the director] saw her she is borderline crazy...I don't think she's a lesbian.
Oh Ok,...

Many successful British television shows have crossed the pond over the years to be remade for an American audience with variable results. For every "Sanford And Son" or "Shameless," there's a "Free Agents" or "Prime Suspect."
So when plans were first announced for a U.S. version of hit comedy "The Office," many said it was doomed to mediocrity and inevitable failure.
On "Inside Comedy" (Thurs., 11 p.m. Est on Showtime) former "Office" star Steve Carell sat down with David Steinberg to talk about the problems inherent in remaking such an iconic show.
"The odds were really against us and everyone said 'this will never work.' ... We knew we were going to be decimated by critics, fans of the original show wouldn't like it."
But Carell took the view that since the original show was so great, then a new version that was only half as good would still be "a pretty good show.

Chris Rock talked to "Inside Comedy" host David Steinberg about the legacy of two of the funniest black stand-up comedians in history, Bill Cosby and Richard Pryor.
Comparing the two pioneers, Rock acknowledged Cosby as "the greatest." He said that Cosby's work was of such a high caliber that no one ever attempts to copy it. Whereas, Pryor, on the other hand, "as great as Richard is, I do a little Richard, Eddie [Murphy] does a little Richard ... "
Explaining what makes Cosby's material so great, Rock said that none of it "is predicated on a reference point. Each joke is so f***ing good that it withstands the reference. Almost all of them would work today. ... And you can't say that about any other comedian."

Comedy is a hard thing to define. Everyone has their own specific sense of humor. But what most people can agree on is who some of the legends of the industry are. And the new Showtime program "Inside Comedy" will provide viewers with unique access to these people with stories of their early days, influences and favorite moments.
The series is produced by a couple people who know something about the industry - Steve Carell and David Steinberg. Carell is, of course, a household name from his work on "The Daily Show" and "The Office." Steinberg earned most of his kudos working behind the camera, directing famed sitcoms like "Seinfeld," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Mad About You" and "Designing Women." But on "Inside Comedy," Steinberg steps in front of the lens to talk with comic forces like Don Rickles, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Larry David and others.

If you've noticed that, for the most part, Jerry Seinfeld seems to have disappeared from public view since the end of his all-time great sitcom, you're right. And it's not because he couldn't repeat his success; he just didn't feel comfortable with it in the first place.
He was the king of TV comedy, with millions repeating his witty one liners and weekly-coined catchphrases, but as a trained standup comedian, Seinfeld was more used to self-loathing than congratulations. As he tells Showtime's new series, "Inside Comedy," being "a thing" wasn't exactly his thing.
"There's nothing better for comedian than being penned in, closed off, shut out, not welcome, that's nutrition. That's what you want as a comedian. Acceptance is a very dangerous thing for a comedian," he says. "Standup is a loud desperation."

Ray Richmond is contributing to Deadline’s TCA coverage. The TCA session today promoting Showtime’s forthcoming new comedian interview series Inside Comedy got weird at a few points. One such moment came about midway through, when a questioner asked executive producer and host David Steinberg if being involved in the show was “a nonstop orgy where you were well-paid.” A shocked expression crossed Steinberg’s face before he replied, “Well, given that the focus was always on the other person, maybe I’d say it was like being a eunuch at an orgy.” Shortly thereafter, Steinberg was asked why there are so many Jews in comedy. “Jews are smarter,” came his reply, to great laughter in the room. Afterward, he elaborated that he wasn’t really being facetious. “Entertainment is always seized by the downtrodden and disenfranchised, which is why you maybe now see more young Latinos coming up,...

David Steinberg is happy to let his friends bring the funny.

"Super 8" director J.J. Abrams, whose married spy drama "Undercovers" flopped last season, returns with "Person of Interest" this fall, a show about a billionaire and his mystery machine.
