a challenge to sit through

Warning: Spoilers
Among paulin's films, despite their low budget and hideous acting, are a couple gems that reward you for bearing 80-90 minutes homevideo. this one isn't one of them.

after enjoying such pieces as cryptic plasm or blood beasts, i had quite some expectations for this earlier work. people who are familiar with paulin know that the first three quarters usually makes you suppress a yawn - or openly display it - before the director finally does what he does best: dirty, hideous and usually quite disgusting SFX. one would expect the same in DGOF. there are scenes that are so utterly tedious, like some dude just walking in a city, that i caught myself thinking "please die or kill someone already". (he doesn't. he just keeps walking for what feels like an eternity.) at some other point we see mr paulin quarreling with himself over the dreary task he's been put into, and the scene just won't end.

the characters, as usual, are one-dimensional and by no means likeable. we have a crackhead dude who is also a masochist (that piercing ripping scene might actually be real) and likes to yell and swear and point guns at people. then there's paulin in an almost heartbreaking loser role and his money-stealing wife who seems to own the house they live in. everyone else is very much replaceable - hell, even those three are - and add nothing whatsoever to the plot.

let us not lose words on technical details. if you read this review, you probably have seen other movies like this, and know what to expect. we don't watch this to enjoy smooth lighting and panorama shots right?

now for the climax. my expectations were very high when runtine was, well, running out. all i can say is, i didn't get what i felt i deserved. there's some blood, alright, and some pretty nasty shots, but put together they fill about 5 minutes, generously speaking. and it also isn't the carnage a paulin enthusiast - are there any paulin enthusiasts besides me? - would wait for. when the credits started, i felt royally cheated and regretted my vow to never skip forward a movie. if you're a completist regarding brian paulin, watch it. if not, you can skip it without missing anything in your life.
