For viewers of recent horror anthology project Mexico Barbaro, director Edgar Nito needs little introduction. Surrounded by more experienced directors and bigger names Nito's segment was, nonetheless, a clear standout in the acclaimed anthology, a true gem of a piece packed to the gills with a vibrant edgy energy. And so it's significant news that after a string of critically acclaimed short films Nito is now in production on his debut feature. Guachicolero stars Eduardo Banda as a young man working with locals gangs to siphon gasoline out of government pipelines to sell on the black market. Plenty of familiar names on the production side of this as well with Joshua Sobel (Are We Not Cats, Graceland, Scherzo Diabolico), Annick Mahnert (78 / 52, Dearest...

“Are We Not Cats,” the closing night screening at the Venice International Film Critics’ Week, is the strange but tender story of a man who attempts to restart his life, but is sidetracked when he meets a woman who shares his unorthodox habit, a proclivity for eating hair. In honor of its unique premise, the New York-based filmmakers commissioned Iranian artist Morteza Mottaghi to create an art piece for the film’s key art, which will premiere along with the film at Venice. The piece was created completely from 100% human hair – including hair from Mottaghi’s own grandmother – and then the poster adapted and designed by Giant Films, a graphic design firm based in Mexico City. See the poster below.

In the previous episode of Graceland, Charlie was forced to make a deal with Amber in order to find Germaine, the guy who almost beat her to death in last season's finale. Meanwhile, Paige received an award for her work in the Lena case, Mike developed a predictable addiction to painkillers, and Briggs decided to use Ari's girlfriend against him. And in the storyline that refuses to end, Johnny killed Sid to protect Carlito because he is still holding Lucia hostage.
In the third episode of season 3, "Sense Memory," Mike goes back into the field, but his pill-popping ways almost get him shot his first time out. Meanwhile, Charlie takes Amber down to Miami, Jakes gets involved with Johnny's mess and in his quest to bring down Ari, Briggs seeks help from a retired agent.

Full cast + crew Graceland is like the art-house version of Taken. Instead of having an ex-cia badass tearing through a foreign city to look for his kidnapped daughter who is about to be forced into prostitution, we've got a politician's poorly paid driver who goes on a mission through hell after his daughter is accidentally kidnapped in place of the politician's daughter. That's about where the similarities end, though. I just wanted to get the attention of anyone who otherwise may not pay attention to a Filipino thriller. Welcome back to a slightly revamped version of This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Graceland Marlon Villar (Arnold Reyes) is chauffeur to Manuel Chango (Menggie Cobarrubias), a salaciously corrupt politician in the Philippines who expects obedience and loyalty regardless of his actions. The two men have daughters the same age, and one day while Marlon drives the girls to school they’re stopped in an attempt to kidnap the politician’s daughter. Things go terribly awry, and the confused kidnappers take Marlon’s daughter instead having mistaken her for Chango’s child. Now Marlon’s only hope is for the politician to pay the ransom in the belief that his daughter is in peril, but maintaining the lie may lead to an even bigger tragedy. Writer/director Ron Morales‘ fast-moving and vicious little film is a fantastically economical thriller that wastes no time diving...

It's a trickier process than it might seem, creating a sympathetic character whose world is imploding, mapping his internal anguish while illustrating all he's up against. Striking the right balance between interior and exterior can mean the difference between compelling drama and accidental melodrama. Writer-director Ron Morales just misses equilibrium in the visually arresting Filipino thriller Graceland. When saintly chauffeur Marlon Villar (Arnold Reyes)—devoted father, husband to a deathly ill wife—is ensnared in the bungled kidnapping of the daughter of Manuel Chango (Menggie Cobarrubias,) the pedophilic politician for whom he works, he finds himself in a race to save his own daughter even as his credibility is called into question. Good and evil are broadly sk...

The story of a man fighting for his loved ones, doing whatever it takes to better their lives or to save them from the peril they’re in, is far from revolutionary in film. In fact, some variation of that tale is at the core of almost any story. After all, what serves as a greater motivator than love? With Graceland, writer/director Ron Morales takes that story but puts a very dark and very haunting spin on it.
Arnold Reyes stars as Marlon, the driver/assistant to a powerful and corrupt congressman, Chango (Menggie Cobarrubias), who frequently solicits underage prostitutes. Marlon, though disgusted, goes along with Chango’s scummy behavior since he has little in the way of other options. Between a sick wife and a daughter he has to support, he’s barely getting by, and unemployment isn’t an option. When his daughter and the congressman’s daughter are kidnapped,...

Ron Morales’ nifty second feature Graceland centers on Marlon Villar (Arnold Reyes), driver to corrupt senator Manuel Chango (Menggie Cobarrubias). The senator’s a pedophile with a penchant for underage hookers; Marlon — struggling to raise funds for an organ transplant for his ill wife — turns a blind eye. The two men’s daughters are friends, but when Marlon’s child is mistaken for the senator’s during a kidnapping, he has to lie his way into making sure the senator puts up the ransom funds. Moral ambiguity ties into a world seemingly devoid of innocence in Ron Morales' Graceland, the latest film acquired and distributed by Drafthouse Films. A tightly-wound kidnapping thriller set in the overly corrupt Philippines, Graceland strikes a spark early on and never seems interested in dousing the flames until all of Morales' characters are burned, even if just a little. The screenplay adds new elements and interesting facets to the familiar sub-genre, and Morales' direction drives the point home even harder. For all that it has to say, Graceland is a bit hard to watch, but its message deserves to be a bitter pill to swallow. That bitter pill is noticed early, when Marlon (Arnold Reyes), a chauffeur to a corrupt politician, has to drive his boss' latest conquest home from a night of debauchery. The "conquest" is a 14-year-old girl, and instantly, the whole world within which Morales' story unfolds becomes a giant,...

Filipino crime thriller "Graceland," follows the worst day in a chauffeur's life: when both his daughter and the daughter of his corrupt politician boss get ambushed in a kidnapping. Shot guerrilla-style in just 17 days on location in the Philippines with no permits, writer-director Ron Morales and his crew pulled off quite the feat. The Drafthouse Films release is currently available on VOD and opens theatrically on April 26. Below, Morales shares a scene shot on the fly when they stumbled upon an alley where men conducted spider fights (!). He also shares some general advice for filmmakers on how to shoot in a foreign location. You never know what you might find in a labyrinth of alleyways. The producers Sam Rider and Rebecca Lundgren found these spider fighters while scouting for locations while I was casting. They called me up telling me all about it, from the fighting rules to how the take care of them.

The value of a really good story hook can never be overstated, but it’s become fairly uncommon these days to find a film that has one. The odds decrease even more when it comes to movies with a fantastic premise and a successful execution of that idea. Ron Morales‘ second feature, Graceland, manages to do both. Marlon Villar (Arnold Reyes) is low level driver for a sordid congressman, and while he hates what the elected official does with his free time, he needs the paycheck to help raise his own daughter Elvie. He drives the congressman’s daughter to school every day and makes a habit of bringing Elvie along for the ride, but when a routine traffic stop turns into a botched kidnapping, his life is thrown into immediate turmoil. Philippines/USA, 2012
Graceland, the new film from the Philippines’ Ron Morales, contains so much corruption and suffering that viewers will be forgiven for thinking at first that they’ve wandered into an Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu film. However, Graceland is helped by the fact that it gets in and out in a brisk 83 minutes, about half of the time of a misery-palooza such as Babel. That’s all which is needed to change a film’s delivery from “wallowing” to “riveting.”
Arnold Reyes is fantastic as Marlon Villar, a driver for a Filipino congressman who becomes entangled in a kidnapping plot. To go much further into the film’s plot would involve spoiling events which are better experienced than read; it suffices to say that Reyes captures perfectly the balance of being at the mercy of fate while blaming himself for his misfortune at the same time.

A dingy journey through the Filipino underworld, "Graceland" is a kidnapping thriller from director Ron Morales that is dark both on the surface and at its heart. From the moment the kidnapping begins, Marlon, who was already in a tight spot to begin with, is put through the ringer, suspected by the cops of being involved with the kidnappers, terrified for the life of his own kidnapped daughter, and determined to keep the news from his ailing wife. With every phone call from the kidnappers, who stay at least one step ahead of the borderline corrupt police, Marlon's situation gets more and more desperate and the darkness in everyone around him comes rushing to the surface. Don't expect any sort of revenge fantasy-fulfillment like we saw in Tony Scott's "Man on Fire", either. It's clear from the early scenes that no matter how things get resolved, it will mostly be bad for all involved.

Written and directed by Ron Morales, "Graceland" depicts "a desperate man's infinite moral compromises amidst a tale of kidnapping gone horribly wrong," according to Drafthouse. The film is set to have its Texas Premiere at this year's Fantastic Fest, running September 20-27.

Continue reading for the films announced and a brief plot synopsis of each… but, do so at your own risk! (The inconceivable awesomeness of Fantastic Fest may be too much for some to handle. Those unaccustomed to this level of awesomeness should refrain from indulging in such films without first consulting your physician to verify you are in fact an adult with adventurous taste and not still just a sniveling, winy brat.)

It’s hard to believe that in a month and two days that Michael & I, along with two other writers from St. Louis, will be making our annual 14 hour drive to Austin, Texas for one of our favorite things/times of the year, Fantastic Fest. This will mark my 3rd year covering the festival and Michael’s 2nd year. The press release has been released on what will be playing at the festival and I think I can honestly say that the selection feels like it might top last year. We got some more hits off our picks of what we thought might play this year as well.

Today, the next wave of films were announced on the Fantastic Fest website. Here is the complete list for y’all, but we’re most excited about the inclusion of Looper and Sinister:

Fantastic Fest is truly a unique event. There’s plenty of room for arthouse films and, on some occasions, the big awards players, but one theater that hosts There Will Be Blood might, the next night, see the premiere of something you’d catch on a weird cable station at 3 A.M. You don’t get that at Venice.
Such a programming mentality is reflected in the second set of titles: We have Leos Carax‘s acclaimed Holy Motors, Rian Johnson‘s Looper, horror anthology The ABCs of Death (as if it could premiere anywhere else), Sinister, and a whole batch of films I’d never heard of up until now. It’s wonderfully eclectic, and it only makes me wish I could be there come late September.
See the lineup below:

Title: Graceland Director: Ron Morales Cast: Arnold Reyes, Menggie Cobarrubias and Dido De La Paz It seems like crime, corruption and politicians go hand in hand. The idea that you are above the law is tempting to anyone who has a seat of power and authority, which is probably why it’s never shocking to hear news of a politician in trouble with the law. In the new film from filmmaker Ron Morales, “Graceland,” he explores what any man will do when his family is threatened, by severing all loyalties to protect your loved ones. “Graceland” follows the story of Marlon (Arnold Reyes), the assistant to local Congressman Manuel Chango (Menggie [ Read More ]...

Mild-mannered husband and father Marlon Villar is just having one of those days. The boss is on his case. His wife is being needy. His daughter is acting up. The cops are bugging him. “Graceland” begins as a compendium of what some adults would call a terrible, horrible, very bad, no good day. Wah wah.
If only it were that easy. His boss is sniveling, corrupt politico Manuel Chango, a man who demands that his underlings clean up his messes. Said messes usually involve underage prostitutes from the local sex-trafficking trade, some of whom don’t survive the night. Chango pays Marlon to act as his chauffeur, with the expectation that he act as garbage man for Chango’s grotesque excess. No, he doesn’t really care that Marlon’s wife is sick and bed-ridden.
Marlon eventually makes the mistake of bringing his home life into his work life. Tasked...

Graceland
Written by Ron Morales
Directed by Ron Morales

Tribeca: Tell us a little about Graceland. How would you describe the movie? Ron Morales: I can give a very brief description of Graceland. It's a kidnapping drama that leaves no one innocent. Tribeca: Graceland is a disturbing and complex thriller that stays with you long after you've left the theater. What inspired you to tell this story? Ron Morales: Kidnapping and prostitution are big business, not just in the Philippines, but all over the world. Prostitution is a very visual industry in Manila. Red lights and all that are everywhere. As far as kidnapping, it's a pretty common phenomenon for all social classes. Originally, I was writing a movie about sex workers in the Philippines. When I was researching these women, I knew something had to be done. After listening to their recordings, I had to tell their story or highlight it somehow. Long story short, we...
