Canadian director Denis Villeneuve has done the impossible: turned Frank Herbert's complex and intense sci fi novel Dune into two popular and critically acclaimed films.
The success of the first two movies will probably mean more Dune on the horizon, and there's plenty of material available in Frank Herbert's six books.
However, even Villeneuve couldn't pull off these 5 wild moments from the novels.
The Chairdogs
In the novel Heretics of Dune, Frank Herbert introduced a bizarre furniture-animal hybrid. They're called 'chairdogs', and they're exactly what they sound like: a bioengineered combination of a chair and a dog.
The point of chairdogs is that they are designed to massage you while you sit in them, though if that actually sounds appealing to you I have a few questions about your taste (and your criminal history).
It's hard to imagine that Dune 3 will feature chairdogs, not because they're too complicated for...

When CBS announced its Matlock reboot in February of 2023, the casting news generated almost as much excitement as the revelation that one of TV's most beloved lawyers would be returning to the small screen.
One year later, Kathy Bates is still on board as the titular attorney, and Jason Ritter will portray her colleague Julian -- but a well-known newcomer will be taking over the role of Ritter's dad.
The network announced today that Beau Bridges will be joining the show as a powerful lawyer with the apt name of Senior.
According to a press release, Senior is "the managing partner of New York’s most prestigious law firm with an indomitable presence that immediately alters the temperature of any room.
"The man’s influence reaches far and wide, and although he loves his son, Julian (Jason Ritter), he might respect his daughter-in-law, Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), more," the announcement continues.

Peter Chernin’s North Road Company has hired Amy Israel in the role of president of television.
Israel was most recently the head of scripted for Showtime, though it was announced in September she would be stepping down from that role by year’s end. In her new role, Israel will oversee all of North Road’s scripted television development and production. The role reunites her with fellow Showtime alum David Nevins, who currently serves as North Road’s CEO and to whom Israel will report.
“Amy is among the best in the business, the driving force behind a long list of the most impactful shows in our time,” Nevins said. “I know first-hand the value of her unique combination of creative leadership and producorial drive, and I am fully confident she will make a fantastic addition to North Road’s leadership and the ongoing expansion of our industry-leading content portfolio.

Cat Person was previously reviewed at Sundance 2023.
Plot: A college student (Emilia Jones) becomes infatuated with an older man (Nicholas Braun) who frequents the theater she works at.
Review: For those not in the know, Cat Person is based on a New Yorker article that went viral a few years ago. It described, in excruciating detail, the relationship between a 20-year-old college girl and a thirty-something man she had a brief relationship with. The film, adapted by writer Michelle Ashford of Masters of Sex and director Susanna Fogel, embellishes the already fictional story with a third-act twist, but do a good job translating the story to film. The result is a fresh, uncomfortable and often legitimately funny take on a provocative subject.
Power dynamics in relationships are discussed now more than they used to be, even compared to when the article was published in 2017. Nowadays, everyone would look askew at...

Amy Israel, the head of scripted at Showtime, is stepping down, Variety has learned.
Israel’s formal title is executive vice president of global programming. She will remain with Showtime through the end of the year in a transitional role. The announcement of her departure was made by Paramount’s Chris McCarthy and Nina L. Diaz.

Within the past four years alone, the success rate for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress Emmy nominees who have entered their ceremonies with same-year SAG Award wins under their belts has dropped from 100% to 60%. After being followed by Anya Taylor-Joy (“The Queen’s Gambit”) in 2021, win-lose trendsetter Patricia Arquette might soon be joined by 2023 SAG Award recipient Jessica Chastain (“George & Tammy”), whose Gold Derby Emmy odds are significantly lower than those of her strongest challenger, Ali Wong (“Beef”).
Chastain and Wong represent half of their Emmy lineup’s first-time acting nominee majority, which also includes Dominique Fishback (“Swarm”) and Riley Keough (“Daisy Jones & the Six”). Rounding out the group, which features no former Emmy champions, are category newcomers Lizzy Caplan (“Fleishman is in Trouble”) and Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”).
In order to determine the likelihood of Chastain perpetuating said unfortunate trend, let’s take a closer look at each nominee.

The folks at Studiocanal and Rialto Pictures have released a trailer, as well as the release date, for "Cat Person." The movie is based on Kristen Roupenians' 2017 short story of the same name that was published in The New Yorker, and features Emilia Jones from the Best Picture winner "Coda" having the hook-up from hell with Nicholas Braun, aka cousin Greg from "Succession." Bad hook-ups are common in the age of internet dating, sure, but in this case, things go from bad to downright scary.
Susanna Fogel directed the film, with Michelle Ashford ("Masters of Sex") penning the screenplay. The adaptation of the short story is due to hit theaters in October and figures to be a conversation starter as part of the fall moviegoing season. Let's roll the trailer.

As much as we like to try and predict the key Emmy races, some categories are more tough to figure out — and therefore, more interesting — than others. Outstanding drama series? Shhh, I think we have a pretty good hunch what’s going to win. This year’s acting categories have some obvious favorites. However, I would not be surprised by almost anything — particularly as performers have stopped campaigning in the wake of the SAG/AFTRA strike.
One of my favorite categories this year, however, is lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie. And here’s the top reason: This is the only acting category this year that features not a single previous Emmy winner among its nominees. As a matter of fact, half of them have never been nominated at all. Other categories come close. But lead actress in limited/anthology/movie is the only category where I can,...

One would be forgiven for not realizing it, but a horror movie starring Lizzy Caplan and Anthony Starr was released in theaters three weeks ago just as the Barbenheimer craze was getting underway. Sure, it would be easy to blame the wild success of "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" for burying this movie but, quite frankly, it seems like Lionsgate, the studio behind the film, must shoulder some of that blame as well. Not only did the studio do very little to build any awareness for the film but, as it arrived on VOD over the weekend, the domestic box office grosses were never reported.
For people who don't follow this stuff regularly, it is truly rare for a theatrical release of any kind from a well-known studio to not have its box office numbers reported at all. Even movies that make very little will have those numbers reflected on sites like...

It’s hard to believe, but Cobweb star Lizzy Caplan hasn’t made a full-fledged horror movie until now. The genre is often a rite of passage for younger actors, especially modern-day performers, but surprisingly, the opportunities never came Caplan’s way despite launching her career 24 years ago. She started out with a handful of appearances on Paul Feig and Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks, as well as the latter’s Undeclared, and she first got to know Seth Rogen through both of the aforementioned comedic projects. Oddly enough, Rogen’s production company, Point Grey, would bring her Chris Thomas Devlin’s Cobweb script two decades later.
In 2004, Caplan’s life forever changed by way of her breakout performance as the witty and brash Janis Ian in Tina Fey and Mark Waters’ now-classic comedy, Mean Girls. So, besides having an aversion to horror movies, Caplan tends to believe that...

Talking to Heléne Yorke really doesn’t feel like an interview. Sure, during a Friday afternoon Zoom we mostly focus on The Other Two, the criminally underrated Max comedy she stars in, but there’s enough bantering about life and mom things that it quickly shifts into chatting. And it certainly doesn’t hurt that she’s funny and relatable, not entirely unlike her on-screen persona.
One half of the titular Two, Brooke Dubek is a former professional dancer who’s searching for her purpose and examining her identity after her youngest brother becomes a pop sensation overnight. At this point in the series’ third season, she’s managing the careers of ChaseDreams (Case Walker) and her mother-turned-media mogul Pat Dubek (Molly Shannon) after temporarily leaving the industry because the pandemic made her feel guilty about not being a professional do-gooder, and middle child Carey (Drew Tarver) is on the...

Over the years, dozens of actors have accomplished the feat of being Emmy-nominated in one guest category for multiple shows, but only one has been recognized in this manner for playing a single character. This special case involved Shelley Long, who received comedic notices for playing Diane Chambers on both “Cheers” (1993) and “Frasier” (1996). After more than a quarter century of standing alone in this distinction, she could soon be joined by Carrie Preston, who won the 2013 Best Drama Guest Actress award as eccentric lawyer Elsbeth Tascioni on “The Good Wife” and is now seeking a bookend trophy for its Paramount Plus spinoff, “The Good Fight.”

Major Crimes, the continuation series of The Closer, ran for an incredible six seasons, totaling over 100 episodes,
While the show didn't receive as much critical acclaim as The Closer and didn't earn any Emmys, the show was a success for TNT.
The ensemble-driven Major Crimes featured many of the same characters and performers as its predecessor, which rarely happens on television.
The show premiered after The Closer's finale, with only a few casting changes, such as Kyra Sedgwick stepping down from her leading role.
