I think they forgot to add the rest of the movie
aidenshorror17 May 2024
In my opinion, this was some pretty sloppy work. The kills and the cinematography were both just eh. The movie was so dragged out that I could cut the parts that weren't important, and the movie wouldn't even be an hour long. So many stupid mistakes too. Yeah, let's get high so your boyfriend thinks you're hallucinating. Let's play the piano, while a record is on, while you're on FaceTime at full volume for the dead silence outside the house, so everyone in the whole state of Oregon hears you. I think I'll wait till Chapter 2, and Chapter 3 comes out to rent on my TV, because that was a waste of my afternoon....

Felt like a student film project remake of the original
bjannaway17 May 2024
I was super excited to see this movie as I loved the original and the trailers looked like it kept the creepy vibes of the original. Unfortunately that wasn't the case. I found the movie to be full of the cliche tacky things that a lot of scary movies have nowadays. For example, making a ton of unnecessary noise when you are hiding and trying to be quiet, using lights and lighters in dark spaces when you are trying to hide, yelling each others names as you run through the forest, just unnecessary and unrealistic things that nobody would do in real life and make you not care what happens to the protagonists. I felt like a number of things that happened in the movie just weren't nearly as effective as the original for that reason. Also, one of the reasons I loved the original was because you know absolutely nothing about the killers, where they come from, or what they are about. In this film, the entire town is full of creeps and it just really took away from the eeriness.

it's been a while since 2018's PREY at NIGHT, This became a trilogy, Really I wonder why?
kmkevinn-6473315 May 2024
The Strangers: Chapter 1' embarks on a journey to rekindle the chilling essence of its predecessor, yet it stumbles into the abyss of the overexploited home-invasion genre. Directed by Renny Harlin, the film attempts to lay the groundwork for a new prequel trilogy but does so with a palpable lack of originality and an overreliance on worn-out tropes. The narrative follows Maya and Ryan, portrayed by Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez, whose road trip takes a detour into terror. Stranded in a remote Airbnb, they become the prey of the franchise's notorious masked antagonists. While the setting is ripe for tension and fear, the execution falls short, with the film succumbing to predictable jump scares and a script that lacks the subtlety required for a truly harrowing experience. The performances, while earnest, are hindered by characters that are crafted more as archetypes than as fleshed-out individuals, leading to decisions that serve plot convenience over logical storytelling. The antagonists, once symbols of random and unfathomable violence, are now reduced to mere shadows of their former selves, lacking the enigmatic terror that once haunted viewers. In its endeavor to pay homage to the original, 'The Strangers: Chapter 1' instead echoes its scenes and dialogues without capturing the same suspenseful atmosphere. It's a cinematic paradox; a film that is both a retread and a step backward, leaving audiences with a sense of déjà vu rather than dread. In conclusion, 'The Strangers: Chapter 1 is a reminder that many efforts of success is to revive a franchise that perhaps should have been left undisturbed. It serves as a reminder that not all chapters are worth revisiting, but especially when the story has nothing new to say. Chapter 2 here it comes...

Save your money

Warning: Spoilers
Don't bother watching this film, it's so boring! And sometimes feels like your watching a spoof. Theres a few jump scares but that's about it. There's no real storyline. It doesn't make sense, for example they climbed under the house and the intruders didn't know. Why didn't they just run into the woods and head for another direction instead they went into the shed!. Honestly I would save your time and money. I think they could have done a lot more in terms of story line and suspense. Instead all that happens is they run away into the woods. They get dragged back and then killed. So bizarre just avoid.

The Familiars
I don't want to waste too much energy on this review but I was quite disappointed. I was looking forward to this one and it just ended up being a lame reboot of the original.

It started out with a silly tone, cheesy script and even some tacky product placement. We get into it with two relatively unlikeable main characters that barley have enough background/plot to keep the story rolling. There are countless direct parallels (I'm talking exactly the same) to the original movie and even some from the second one. To the point where it didn't feel like an homage and I caught myself thinking... why am I sitting here watching the same movie I did in 2008, but like, worse...?

It was marketed as though it was a prequel, but there was not even an ounce of origin story and there were things such as smart phones and push to start cars that placed it in the future from the original. So if this wasn't a prequel, what are we doing here?? There were multiple plot points that were seemingly important that went nowhere... including an inhaler, dietary restrictions, a friends vacation and some strung up poultry.

I'm just confused and disappointed as to why they simply remade this movie with even less of a storyline, not as good actors and a lame ending... all without infusing anything new, interesting or original into it. All in all it was relatively entertaining as a stand alone I suppose... If you haven't seen the original and are super into jump scares, then go for it. Otherwise just rewatch Liv Tyler lol 3.5 rounding up to a 4, probably wouldn't recommend.

A paint-by-numbers imitation of the source material
drownsoda9017 May 2024
"The Strangers: Chapter 1" follows a young couple who get stranded in an off-the-beaten-path town in Oregon and end up spending the night at an Airbnb lodge in the woods. Unfortunately for them, three masked strangers are about to make their night a living hell.

To be clear, some may consider this review biased as I count myself as a major fan of Bryan Bertino's original 2008 film "The Strangers". To date, it is possibly the most nerve-shredding experience I've had seeing a film on the big screen. Sixteen years have passed since I first saw it, but I've never forgotten it. And while its 2018 sequel, "The Strangers: Prey at Night" took a notably different tone, it at least managed to function as a stylish and energetic slasher film in the same vein.

This reboot (or prequel, according to some sources--having seen the film now, I am unsure of how this could possibly function as such) does no such thing. Rather, it follows the framework of the 2008 original nearly beat by beat, save a protracted first quarter in which we are served the "city kids in redneck town full of leery locals who are sinister for no apparent reason" trope (by the way, I am a native Oregonian, and I can vouch that people there do not speak with southern accents, even in the backwoods).

The things that "The Strangers: Chapter 1" gets wrong are numerous, but the subtlety, stillness, and down-home feel of its source material is one of the glaring things that is most sorely missed. This film is loaded with dramatic musical cues, predictable scares, fog machine-shrouded forests, and trite dialogue. There is little to no gravity to be found here in the characters or the setting, and without that, a film with a barebones story like this swiftly goes off the rails into the land of cliche after cliche after cliche. The lead actors here do what they can with the material, but the stilted dialogue often renders them at the mercy of a lifeless and clunky script.

In the end, "The Strangers: Chapter 1" simply feels like a soulless paint-by-numbers imitation of the 2008 film, using the template as a vessel only to fill it with bland, uninspired recreations of that film's most tense and frightening moments. There are no scares to be had here, and even worse, there are few thrills either. "The Strangers: Chapter 1" is frankly boring, which does not bode well for a further two installments. "To be continued"? No, thank you. 2/10.

Ridiculous, all bad decisions like in the car insurance commercial
sylysya17 May 2024
Terrible movie. I have no idea how these other reviews are giving it anything higher than a 3. It looked like that commercial where everyone is running from that masked killer and instead of getting into the running car, they go to the barn filled with killing weapons to hide. This movie stunk so bad. I will admit I didn't see the first two so maybe that's why I didn't get it and I didn't like it at all but as far as believability and storyline, plot, sensibility, it failed all the way around. Give me that hour and half of my life back. If they can make money off this crap I should make a movie as well.

Roll on Chapter 2.
User-44071017 May 2024
My expectations went from high to low after seeing floods of negative reviews. But after seeing it? Honestly not that bad. It lays the groundwork with enough intrigue and terror to keep you invested. While not without its imperfections, it's a well made suspense flick that sets the stage for what could be a satisfying narrative journey.

While the plot doesn't stray far from familiar territory, the film's pacing and atmosphere help to compensate for its predictability. The performances are strong, with Petsch and Gutierrez delivering emotional depth to their roles.

In conclusion, "The Strangers: Chapter 1" is a decent start. It may not be groundbreaking, but it provides a solid entry point for a trilogy with potential. I may be in the minority but I'm definitely going to give the following chapters a chance.

This has the MOST cliche and tropes of any movie I ever watched
Please do not spend your money watching this in theaters, it should be straight to DVD. Any horror/slasher movie cliche you could think of... is in this movie but worse than you have ever seen it before. This movie is meant for a very young adolescent audiences. If I seen this at 13 maybe I would have rated it higher. But from the dialogue and stupidity of characters, the plot.. even the cinematography, this movie is very very below average and even below-below average. I've watched a lot of movies and am pretty well versed. So when I say this is the worst of the worse, take that opinion pretty serious. I've literally made this account today and watched this in theaters yesterday. My first ever film rating is for this horrible movie and it gets a 1/10 and if the denominator were 100, then it would get a 1/100. To this film and everybody that helped put it together, I know people need to get paid but I'm sure EVERYBODY that worked on this knew it was a bad product. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME. I wouldn't even recommend this as a movie to stream or even bootleg, it's just that bad. Worst part is, it's not even fun-bad, just horrible bad. Thanks for reading.

I'm very pleased to say this was an excellent experience
jtindahouse16 May 2024
I won't lie, when I heard there was a 'Strangers' trilogy in the works I was excited. That was some of the best movie news I'd heard in a while. I love everything about these movies. They're as intense as horror films come. Still, just the announcement of a trilogy wasn't a guarantee of continued quality. I'm incredibly pleased to say however that 'The Strangers: Chapter 1' was an excellent horror film.

It was my understanding when the films were first announced that 'Chapter 1' would closely follow the story of the 2008 original, and then the following two would branch out from there. This was very much the case. It's not an exact remake by any means, but there are a lot of similar ideas and concepts along the way. They do things just differently enough that fans of the original still have a reason to watch this one.

The film does a good job of finding two lead characters who are likable enough that you care about what happens to them. They certainly aren't your typical disposable horror characters. Also, the film is extremely tense. It has the slow build up that we've come to expect, but once it kicks into gear it never relents.

I had a great time with this movie and I'm extremely excited to see where the sequels go to from here. 9/10.

Decent Enough!
vengeance2017 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Have been a fan of the Franchise for years & remember the first being pretty terrifying! The sequel, which was released 10 Years later, was pretty good too! I was skeptical about this one upon hearing about it, but was bought when I saw the Trailer!

After their Car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple is forced to spend the night in a remote Cabin! Panic ensues as they are terrorised by 3 masked strangers who strike with no mercy & seemingly no motive! Can they survive the night!?

I found the film to be pretty decent! Yeah, it does feel like a remake of sorts, but is was announced back in 2022 that it was a sort of remake/reboot of the original Franchise! I will say the very first Strangers Film is better than this for scares & suspense even though this one was just as good! Of course for gore, The Strangers Prey At Night wins it! This film did lack in gore, but it was supposed to be a nod to the original 2008 Film!

There's some good scares here with the masked strangers & some suspense too! The story isn't much, but by now, we're all here for one thing! Despite the gore lacking, there's plenty of action, a bit of eye candy & a great backdrop for the scenery & Cabin setting! The runtime is 1 hour & 24 minutes & has lightening quick pacing! So, that was also a plus!

Overall, it's a decent film! You'll like this one if you liked the first 2 films! Can't wait for Chapters' 2 & 3!

7/10.

Comes a time to realize your time is too valuable to waste.
blumjay18 May 2024
This movie was awful for so many reasons. Cardboard characters and wall to wall cliches. OK, maybe if you're 12 and have never seen any of the myriad of movies with THE SAME PLOT, you may be intrigued.

There were plenty of failed attempts at suspense. The problem is there's no reason to care at all what happens to this couple. And what's with the girl's lips? Was she stung by a bee?

An example of the brilliant dialog comes when they try to leave the restaurant and the car won't start. "What's the matter?" she asks. "The car won't start" he answers.

Then later, the couple tries to hide from the bad guys by running through the same woods calling out for each other and using the speakerphone.

If this were A Quiet Place, they wouldn't last long.

Saw 1/3 of a Mediocre film, Too short, Epic Fail
josh-8149417 May 2024
The Gen Z or Millenial actors are really painful to watch, so much that you root for the killers! The greedy "genius" filmmakers think we are dumb enough to pay 3 times to complete a story. In the age of 2.5-3 hour films, I feel like I watched only half a film! It was a mediocre half. I already saw this movie when it was called the town that dreaded sundown and friday the 13th part 2, and also that okay movie The Strangers. Is this groundhog's day? The cinematography, lighting and camera angles were fine. The soundtrack okay. The Texas Chainsaw films are better. If I wasnt an AMC A-Lister with credits I would have felt completely cheated. The post credits scene was 100% laughably rediculous. Save your money and time and maybe stream this when you are bored and there is nothing left to stream. Will I be seeing parts 2& 3 in the theatre? Nope!

Same movie
HardyReviews_17 May 2024
The Strangers Chapter 1 follows Maya and Ryan on their way out of town when their car breaks down, they stay at a cabin in the middle of the woods when they're attacked by strangers. This film is a reboot of the original and saying reboot is hard to say. This film is literally the same exact film as the original with very very tiny differences. This movie had so much potential and to make the same exact movie is so disappointing. Not to mention the characters were just so so stupid, the basic dumb horror elements are so overused and played out. Unfortunately this film plays them out and makes them worse. Now let me just take a minute and talk about the character Ryan, he is the worst character, if his rude attitude at the beginning of the movie didn't tell you that, he makes just the dumbest mistakes that even for a movie is ridiculous and that alone makes this movie terrible. It's really unfortunate because I really wanted to like this movie. Unfortunately The Strangers Chapter 1 is not worth the watch. Skip this and if you're going to watch this movie wait until streaming. Hopefully the next chapter is better.

Makes "Prey at Night" look like a masterpiece
mancini199718 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Bro please.... this movie was so trash. You guys thought the Strangers prey at night sequel was bad? You'll appreciate that piece of beautiful artwork now after seeing this pile of trash.

What was bad?

-intro was actual trash, no creativity (like this whole movie) just a guy running through the woods

-the acting is terrible, no emotions, just sloppy work

-car broke down, so they get an airbnb mansion in the middle of the woods...shocker

-copying the same exact scenes from original except this version looks like a middle school film student made it

-a good 45 mins could be trimmed from the main girl walking around in circles in the airbnb with nothing going on

-ugh again with the acting but did not vibe with the girls acting at all

-smoking inside an airbnb that you dont own is incredibly rude....

-playing the same music from the record player thats in the original....it'll make you miss the original

-the main girl barely reacts when she sees one of the strangers in the airbnb lol

-main characters are eating burgers and laughing like they didn't just see a stranger in their airbnb 10 mins prior to....cmon bro such a joke

-so many windows they could have escaped (i.e. They climbed through the floor vent to escape rather than the window behind them and took 10 mins to decide also)

-the nail through the hand was sooo overdramatic and corny

-everyone taking too long to make decisions bro cmon

-the main guy crashes the car immediately when he starts driving....so laughable

-the main girl is hiding from the killer in the woods and make herself obvious by using her phone right there cmon..

-main guy chooses not to shoot one of the killers but had no problem shooting an innocent person 20 mins before

-ending was the exact same as original..just the acting was worse

Overall, this movie was a pile of trash and isn't even good enough for Lifetime. The original (2008) and Prey at Night (2018) are far superior. There was no creativity whatsoever and was just a copy of the original but made with no care at all. The acting was also terrible.

Really can't complain!
sirgarrykay17 May 2024
The cinematography alone is just so good. They really find the creep factor with lighting, angles and smoke/fog. The forest scenes look hauntingly beautiful. Obviously style and overall script of the movie is similar with music, nods and flow of the original movie but it's also done so well and I think for the new generation, it's going to be a scary movie unlike anything out there recently. It's good. The jumps and scares are just perfect. Not all of the writing was exceptional but the actors perform well even in those couple scenes of unnatural responses/lines. But trust me it's not even that bad with those couple lines, I'm just being picky. I feel like the sequels are going to go in a different direction with the next two and with Madelaine's acting, it leaves you excited for what's to come! Those complaining of "why did they make another or it's similar to the first" can't take themselves out of the "remake" of it all, and enjoy the movie. Why did they do this?? Because they were home.

Disgrace, horrible, don't waste your money or time
corteshector-3392717 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
As a fan of the original and the sequel, this is the cw remake version of them, I don't know where to start with the cringey dialogue or horrible horrible acting, what do you except when you have actors who can't act. Terrible in every way you know a horror movie is bad when they have three kills and one of them is off screen. The whole movie is a cringe fest cw show, the ending is non existent, this has been one of the biggest let downs in horror movies ruined by idiotic directors actors producers. I genuinely want to know who thought this movie was even a good idea to release did they not see there product.

Home Invasion Horror
stevendbeard18 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I saw The Strangers: Chapter One, starring Madelaine Petsch-Riverdale_tv, The Shadow Diaries_tv; Froy Gutierrez-Hocus Pocus 2, Teen Wolf_tv; Ben Cartwright-Hatfields & McCoys_tv, Sherlock Holmes_2009 and Ema Horvath-The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power_tv, What Lies Below.

This is the third Strangers movie but it's the first in a new trilogy. The trailers are a little misleading, saying that you will learn how they became the Strangers. Maybe in the next 2 chapters, but no answers are given here as to why they do what they do. Madelaine and Froy are a couple driving through Oregon when they stop to eat in a small town. When they try to leave, they have car problems and Ben-the local mechanic-tells them that they will have to wait a day for the part. Ema is a waitress at the diner and tells them that they can stay at a nearby cabin. That's where the masked Strangers-wearing a scarecrow, doll face and pin_up masks-terrorize them. It pretty much follows the pattern from the first movie. When it does end, there is a To Be Continued sign and in the middle of the end credits, there is a scene that is a teaser for the next movie.

It's rated R for violence, language and drug use and has a running time of 1 hour & 31 minutes.

It's not one that I would buy on DVD but if you like these home invasion horror films, it would be alright to stream.

Don't waste your time.
zarakhan-7227422 May 2024
Hardly watchable. The thing that bring the movie to unwatchable status is mainly the acting. Less than mediocre acting, primarily from the main actress Madeline, that made it a very tough watch. The premise was of the movie is: After their car breaks down in an eerie small town, a young couple is forced to spend the night in a remote cabin. Panic ensues as they are terrorized by three masked strangers who strike with no mercy and seemingly no motive.

This premise is nothing new. It has been done a 1000 times and you can find movies that have done it much better. Don't waste your time with this one.

It was good
ddj-0109819 May 2024
It was good,it is very underrated. It's creepy and disturbing. The only thing that annoys me is that they changed the Dollface and Pin up Girl characters. I don't really like that the iconic blonde hair was removed either. But overall the movie is great. It has a very sad ending,I hope this movie gets better reviews. Because the movie is not bad at all. It has a very scary atmosphere. But I don't like the fact that from now on Pin up is knocking on the door. And off the top of my head, the line is "because you were home" not "here". Anyway, the movie is great. I recommend fans of the original to watch it.

Very surprised!
emaster-0247920 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie had a pretty good entry into the movie, it wasn't too long, it got to the point pretty fast, and the movie itself moves pretty fast, when they had their car broke down and the mechanic was talking to them, he was def trying to help them and save them from the kids, and the lady that recommends them the airbnb that they took, from the start when the guy goes out by himself when he could have token her. Even after the kid showed up. Then later when she explained the people in the house, he didn't believe her. The guy after being chased had so many opertunitues like the RUNNING CAR, he didn't take, and had SOOO many t chances to shoot them and get away but just had to drag out the time, in the house when they were eating and he was dripping hella ketchup, I thought that was foreshadowing their death but I did not expect him to stab the girl before the cops came, but while the ending was pretty obvious, and there are many dumb moments, the movie did it's Job at scaring me, the multiple jump scares that I didn't see coming, and the firecters creative way of puting a spin on classic jump scares. Then there's the fact that there's just some random guy with a leather mask, he never had his face shown and I don't know what his deal was but it's still pretty cool design, the smile on the old ragged pats to sack mask, and that axe, when he chopped through the front doors it was pretty thrilling with that close up.

Pointless movie
oaugusto18 May 2024
A typical stupid horror movie where they do everything they shouldn't and of course the expected happens, every time! The actors are cute and I feel bad for them to start a career at this. The rest is really plain and dumb. I feel so disappointed for wasting my time. A pointless movie, makes you wonder why someone would invest in creating a movie like this to begin with (I was really wondering that during the movie). The theatre was crowded for a Friday night and you could hear the laughs (which is a bad sign). I really could have done so many other things tonight instead of being stuck there. Well, at least I slept for like 10 minutes.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life
lgbuchvitz-0591418 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I had high expectations for this movie. It's a total crap. The story is super cliche. Something everyone had already seen múltiplos times and different types of movies. It's extremely predicatable and the main protagonists decisions make absolute no sense. I'm still going to watch the chapter 2 but I'm 100% sure is going to be rubbish. It's absolute disgusting what the director did with this franchise. When I first watch the first movie it got me scared for weeks bc I live in a remote area myself. This remake is pathetic. I got so angry that I decided to create an imdb account only to give 0 stars to this movie.

Emotionless garbage
mike_easleyy22 May 2024
This really is as bad as the reviews are making it out to be. A lazy, generic copy and paste without the tension, scares, or any meaningful dialogue.

No tension, poor characters, and even the strangers seemed lifeless and strung together with a generic soundtrack.

Also the lame attempt at making some kind of Texas chainsaw/deliverance vibe with the townsfolk was embarrassing. I love the first 2 movies and this was bad beyond belief! I don't see how the trilogy could work out now, and frankly the characters are so boring I don't care how it ends. It was a struggle just to make it through chapter 1.

Watch The Strangers (2008) Instead
fatherfrost-3806319 May 2024
This movie was so bad, I'm writing my first review. If you've seen The Strangers (2008) and wondered what that movie would be like with bad acting and dialog, idiotic decisions, obvious product placement, and changing the terrifying premise of being randomly chosen while in the believed safety of your (vacation) home to the cliche don't stay a random cabin in the woods. I was looking forward to this movie and the next two because I think The Strangers is an underrated gem but I regretted every minute after the opening and even though it's only 90 minutes long, the end couldn't come soon enough.
