astWoman. Not the Nicest Portrayal
Hitchcoc13 January 2024
When the Doc and Louisa head for London so he can read a significant paper to a room full of specialists, things could go better. To start with he gets head butted by a big woman on the plane as he tries to dislodge something in her windpipe. Once at the conference, people don't know Louisa's name and she finds out that Martin is using films of her reproductive organs in his slide show. Also, that old flame is there and Louisa is totally threatened by her. I just want to mention that Louisa has become a frightened, silly person, unlike the strong character she was in the past--a kind of I Love Lucy thing. The woman who desires Martin is also seen as a knucklehead, although Martin has a medical diagnosis for her behavior. The subplot is the babysitter who takes care of the children, who is head of the class in the uptight category.

No Bert...reason enough to see this one.
planktonrules8 April 2024
While I like "Doc Martin", the ten season series had one major problem...relying too often on featuring recurring characters who were really annoying...such as Joe Penhale and Bert Large. This is the first and only one where Bert did not appear...which is more than enough reason to watch the episode.

In this episode, Doc Martin and Louisa are traveling to London for a medical conference where he is the keynote speaker. However, Martin is worried that the babysitter will burn the house down or turn his children into Satanists. Louisa is much more worried that an old flame of Martin's is on the prowl...especially since this woman's at the conference AND her own marriage recently dissolved. Not surprisingly, along the way, Martin manages to save lives and diagnose a rare illness.

This is a very good episode...not just because of Bert's absence. It had less subplots than usual but told the story very well. One of the better shows of season ten.

Far fetched?
nmottel10 December 2022
Sure, the story line is far fetched. In a room full of London doctors it is Martin who saves the day when an old flame collapeses at his lecture. Martin and Louisa get away to London where Louisa is clearly out of her element but Martin fits in suprisingly well. Meanwhile back in Port Wenn Janice is doing her best to be an excellent babysitter while Joe Penhale "helps". This was an enjoyable episode because it put the focus back on Martin and Louisa instead of ancillary characters. A few things that have bothered me in general about this final season, Ruth's extreme makeover is distracting and both James and Mary are remarkably quiet.

Medical inaccuracy

Warning: Spoilers
OK, I'm not medically qualified in anything, just an ordinary person.

And I'm not expecting perfection at all. But. But. But.

I was shocked by the medical ignorance about the correct treatment of his ex's diabetes.

OK, so (spoiler alert) Sophie collapses and Martin diagnoses that it's to do with her status as a Type 1 diabetic. He then administers glucogen- ie something which raises (note: raises) a person's blood sugar levels. And later asks for something with sugar on it, eg a fruit juice. Which also raises blood sugar level. However!

At no stage did he test her blood sugar levels to check whether they were currently too low - or too high!

And when conscious she said that she hadn't been taking her insulin as often as she should. - Thus it was likely that her blood sugar levels were currently too high - and raising them more would have -killed her(!!) not helped her to recover.
