Above-standard laughs from 30 Rock

Warning: Spoilers
Season 5 of 30 Rock was probably the best since season 1, and one of the best ideas developed last year was to give Jack a new nemesis for taking over his company. It's not a polished, ambitious gay man like Devon Banks (Will Arnett), but a seemingly typical teenage girl named Kaylie Hooper, played by Chloë Moretz. Having Jack battling a girl seems unusual, but Kaylie is not to be underestimated, having her own schemes and strategies. Their rivalry is between someone who worked his way to the top and someone supposedly entitled to power by blood, and I was wanting to finally see this again in season 6. Moretz plays the part well, balancing vicious and vulnerable, as Jack and Liz discuss.

Meanwhile, Kenneth appears to be on his way to the top, handling his new job as a censor so well he gets promoted (being a person obsessed with morality, he certainly fits in a family business). Jack had predicted in season 1 that Kenneth may take over in five years, and it might be happening now. If so, 30 Rock should be given credit for foreshadowing, and certainly this may be a good way to end the struggle between Jack and Kaylie- neither wins. In this episode, Kenneth comes into seemingly inevitable conflict with Liz. Also in this episode, Jenna finds six children born as a result of her egg donations.

There's some good laughs in the episode, including with Jenna's gun and Kenneth's inept failure to recognize Liz in costume. In general season 6 has been turning out nicely; if this is the last season, the show will have gone out with style.

Warning: Spoilers
Liz and Kenneth have a fight about his censoring of TGS. Jack and his nemesis Kaylie have another big battle. Jenna finds the kids that came from her egg donation and treats the ugly one of them very badly, until the rest of her kids stab her in the back.

An excellent episode. Jenna was so evil! And the whole idea itself was absolutely awesome.

I also liken how it is going with Kenneth. I was worried the change may result in ruining the character, but it just adds more to him while leaving him as lovable as always.

And Jack vs Kaylie was awesome once again.

Jenna's Bunch

Warning: Spoilers
Lots of entertaining sublots in this jam-packed episode which represents the mid-way mark of season 6. The scene where Jenna looked under the sofa when five of her biological children rejected her was absolutely pure gold for sure.

Watching 30 Rock now when things are going on elsewhere on another film set is quite surreal and unsettling in some respects as Kenneth would say.

It's easy to forget that 30 Rock and Aaron Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip debuted on NBC at the same time. Conventional wisdom was that Sorkin's powerhouse series be the one that would survive the first season, with 30 Rock being a one season wonder. But history has proved otherwise.
