Prior to the debut of "The Powerpuff Girls" in 1998, show creator Craig McCracken had directed a series of tasteless cartoon shorts starring a character named No-Neck Joe. No-Neck Joe appeared regularly at the celebrated annual Spike & Mike Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation, cementing McCracken's underground credentials. The Powerpuff Girls first came into McCracken's repertoire as early as 1992, back when they were called the Whoopass Girls. The juxtaposition between the characters' creepy, ultra-cute, Margaret Keane-like faces and their ultra-violent behavior was the stuff of comedy legend, and McCracken kept the Girls in his back pocket for years.
Throughout the 1990s, McCracken rose in the ranks of the animation world, landing gigs on shows like "2 Stupid Dogs," "Dumb and Dumber," and, most notably, Genndy Tartakovsky's seminal series 1996 "Dexter's Laboratory." McCracken directed many episodes of the show. "Dexter's Laboratory" was one of four new series launched by the Cartoon Network...

Craig McCracken’s “Kid Cosmic” is one of the best animated shows of the past few years, bursting with heart and imagination. And while it debuted on Netflix almost exactly a year ago, it has already cycled through three seasons and 24 half-hour episodes. And while it is sad to see the show go, it ends in a way that is both emotionally satisfying and extremely entertaining (we are forbidden from discussing details).
With the third and final season now streaming on Netflix, TheWrap spoke with series creator Craig McCracken about where the show came from and ending “Kid Cosmic” and concluding the series its own terms.
Secret Origins
The idea for “Kid Cosmic” struck McCracken back in 2009. “It really was just this odd kid that lived in this desert community and drove people, local truckers and staff, in this truck stop crazy. And he had found this object that he assumed was from space,...

One of the most ironclad scheduling rules in pop culture is that no May 4 should come and go without a new bit of Star Wars lore to entertain us. Thanks to Disney+, this May 4 should be particularly celebratory.
With its list of new releases for May 2021, Disney+ is bringing Star Wars: The Bad Batch into the fold. The animated series will continue a plotline begun in The Clone Wars and will follow Clone Force 99 a.k.a. “The Bad Batch” of genetically mutated clone troopers. Dave Filoni is on board as creator and showrunner so we know we’re gonna have a great time.

Photo: 'Kid Cosmic'/Netflix In the world of animation, the name Craig McCracken is easily one of the more prestigious ones. Having gotten his start working on ‘Dexter’s Laboratory’, the animator would go on to create ‘The Powerpuff Girls’: a smash hit for Cartoon Network and easily one of the best and most iconic animated shows ever made. He followed that up with the delightful ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’ and the short-lived yet underrated (in my friends’ opinion) ‘Wander Over Yonder’. His latest project, the Netflix original animated series ‘Kid Cosmic’, marks McCracken’s return to the superhero genre as well as his first serialized show. While it doesn’t hit the same heights as ‘The Powerpuff Girls’ for now, ‘Kid Cosmic’ still delivers a fun ride with great animation, an entertaining cast of characters, and strong humor. This feature contains some spoilers for Netflix’s Kid Cosmic.
After exploring the stretches of space, wonder, and imagination in shows like Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and Wander Over Yonder, Craig McCracken returns to the realm of superheroes with Kid Cosmic, a more direct, comic book-esque take on the genre than his first smash hit show, The Powerpuff Girls.
The show stars Kid, a young boy who finds a set of superpowered stones, and from there, all heck breaks loose. In the midst of fighting waves upon waves of aliens and creatures from other worlds, however, is an earnest, realistic story about a boy dealing with grief, and the small town that unites behind him through it all.

I can’t tell you I knew anything about the character known as She-Ra or her princesses of power. And, really, neither did “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power” creator Noelle Stevenson at the outset. Stevenson admitted she was born too early to engage with the headdress-wearing, cape-rocking Greek goddess, who became successful in her own right after being spun-off from the popular hero known as He-Man in 1985.
But despite never engaging with the property in the moment, Stevenson says She-Ra was “baked into the zeitgeist.” So when she started working on her first show, the animated “Wander Over Yonder,” she found herself working with a group of “Masters of the Universe” fans, putting this character, whom Stevenson only knew by name, into her orbit. The place that it holds in our imaginations, even with people who didn’t grow up with it fascinated her, Stevenson told IndieWire. Upon...

Fans of the 2007 horror anthology Trick 'r Treat can now enjoy an early Halloween goodie in the form of Legendary Comics' Trick 'r Treat: Days of the Dead, a graphic novel containing four eclectic Halloween horror stories and featuring Sam, one of cinema's ultimate enforcers of All Hallow's Eve traditions. For our latest Q&A feature, Daily Dead caught up with two of the comic's co-writers, Todd Casey and Zach Shields, who discussed creating Days of the Dead, co-writing Michael Dougherty's upcoming Krampus film, and much more.
Where did the idea for Trick 'r Treat: Days of the Dead originate?
Todd Casey: I came late to the party, so I'll defer to the others on this. But my assumption is that people have been waiting a long time for Trick 'r Treat 2 (Mike included) and a comic made sense as a way to begin welcoming people back into that world.

Last week, I was given the unique opportunity to visit DisneyToon Studios, the division of Disney Animation that is responsible for the increasingly wonderful "Tinker Bell" and "Planes" movies. (Their building is right across the street from Disney Television Animation and it took every iota of my self-control not to dash across the walkway and start asking questions about "Gravity Falls" and "Wander Over Yonder.")
Essentially, the folks at DisneyToon Studios gave us a tour of Piston Peak National Park, the huge park at the center of "Planes: Fire & Rescue" (and, if you missed the movie, you really should make up for that -- it's out on DVD, Blu-ray, and Disney Movies Anywhere on November 4th).
In the movie, Dusty (Dane Cook), the erstwhile prop plane who dreamed of being a world-famous racer, is sidelined due to mechanical issues. He finds a new calling in his role as a...

The celebrated and beloved Cartoon Network series is getting a 2016 reboot.
The Powerpuff Girls are back in action! Cartoon Network announced today that a Powerpuff Girls reboot will be staring in 2016.
Kids – and a whole lot of 20-somethings - around the world rejoiced at the news that the beloved trio of brave, crime fighting superheroes Buttercup, Blossom and Bubbles will be returning to television.
"The original Powerpuff Girls was a franchise phenomenon for Cartoon Network, paving the way for a new generation of innovative storytellers and enthusiastic fans worldwide," said Cartoon Network's chief content officer Rob Sorcher. "We are calling these girls back into action based upon an overwhelming demand for sugar, spice and Chemical X."

Chemical X, of course, is the powerful substance that lead to the creation of the Powerpuff Girls in the show.

As Gravity Falls fans await the second season adventures of Grunkle Stan, Dipper and Mabel Pines, Disney Xd plans to tide them over with two new shorts.
Disney Xd will air the Gravity Falls short "Mabel's Scrapbook: Heist Movie" on Monday, June 2, at 6:59/5:59c; an hour later, it will run "Mabel's Scrapbook: Petting Zoo" at 7:59/6:59c.
Disney renewed the hit animated series, created by young animator Alex Hirsch, for a second season last year. Season 1 premiered on Disney Channel, but the network decided to move Gravity Falls and another cartoon, Wander Over Yonder, to Disney Xd this year. (No return date has been announced yet for Gravity Falls.) Both shows feature a slightly older, edgier tone that likely fits better with the pre-teen Disney Xd crowd.

Nominations for the 41st Annual Annie Awards were announced and "Frozen" and "Monsters University" led the pack with 10 nominations each. "Despicable Me 2" and "The Croods" followed closely with 9 noms each.
I am rooting for "Frozen" to win! It's a return to form to what Disney does best -- affecting fairy tale with memorable musical numbers. "Monsters University," on the other hand, was bland. The film bored me on second viewing.
Steven Spielberg will receive the Winsor McCay Award for career achievement at the awards ceremony happening on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. Patrick Warburton will serve as host.

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...
