Parody horror
deloudelouvain22 February 2015
This movie certainly does deserve more then the low ratings it has. I wanted to give it 6.5 but that's not possible so a 6 it is. I can see why people dislike it, because they probably expected something completely else but it is what it is. It's a parody of horror movies with some stupid jokes, and that's what it is supposed to be. The stupider they are the funnier it gets. As soon as I saw Keegan-Michael Key was in it I was skeptical because I absolutely hate him in the TV-show "Planet's funniest animals", but in this movie he was actually not that bad. I even laughed out loud a couple times. Don't expect horror or anything even though there are a lot of bloody gory scenes because it's all too funny to be scared. I don't regret watching this at all.

A movie that is funny but gets repetitive and loses steam toward the end. The cast is funny but can only carry the movie so far.
cosmo_tiger8 November 2013
"It started with white people moving into the neighborhood." Jack (Corddry) and Vanessa (Bibb) are expecting twins and have just moved into a new neighborhood. Before they can get settled they are told the history of the house they are in. Vanessa begins to experience strange things but doesn't realize it. Jack is worried and questions what is happening. So, what can I say about this. The group that did Reno 911 did this movie so that is the baseline to go off of. The jokes that were in Haunted House and Scary Movie 5 are pretty much repeated again here. Some of the jokes go on a little too long while others are funny at first but begin to tire after the repetition. It is hard to say too many bad things about this because the cast is funny and really carry the movie for as long as they can but like the other two movies I mentioned it can't sustain laughs the entire time. This is a movie that would be better watched in twenty minute segments rather then all at once. Overall, a movie that is funny but gets repetitive and loses steam toward the end. I give it a B-.

Shamelessly brash American horror comedy
youngcollind28 February 2022
It's clear from the get go that this is gonna be a silly film. It started to worry me early on that it may be too low brow for even my unrefined pallet, so I played a game of chicken with it and attempted to remain stone faced for as long as I could. As is often the case with this brand of brazen comedy, it certainly takes a lot of swings at humour, and many are bound to miss. Yet as I stared it down, it eventually got the best of me and managed to elicit a good chuckle from a handful of it's dumb jokes. The cast is a rather impressive lineup of familiar faces, most of them cracking a good line here and there while rarely crossing a threshold of irredeemable obnoxiousness. It doesn't win any points for creativity as it merely rehashes worn possession film tropes, and it's not even the first film to spoof the genre. But the comfortingly familiar horror elements do meld well with the goofy stoner humour, making for crude, unchallenging entertainment.

I was really looking forward to this thing with so many people I liked...
MrOPositive30 July 2013
It just ended up feeling like a kind of disjointed, slow sketch comedy American Horror Story.

The whole movie felt too flat and blunt. It's like they thought up clever or funny ideas, but threw them out in the simple way possible. And then they made sure to let them linger, as if they were pausing for audience laughter. Hell, sometimes it even felt like a laugh track would improve the movie.

I mean, the "Scary Movie"s are full of those broad and cheap laughs. This on the other hand, is quirkier and WANTS to be more than that. And unlike the Scary Movies, it DOES feel like one whole story, instead of a bunch of sketches spoofing horror flicks. But every scene felt like it dragged on for too long, way past when you "got" the joke and were ready for them to go deeper or move on or add more layers or something. And that made it come out stale. Over and over, it took you out of the movie, and reminded you that this is just a bunch of funny friends who went out there with a camera and a simple idea to have fun. That idea...just happened to only be 20 minutes worth of story and gags, that they had to stretch out to an hour and a half.

And as much as I could respect the kind of story they wanted to tell, the ways they were trying to milk comedy, and the characters they created...it's just not well edited or put together. There's not enough story, the jokes were too on the nose, and I left it kinda disappointed. This had a lot going for it: great cast, clever creative people behind it. But you might be better off just watching "This Is the End" instead.

Oh, and a certain scene with Riki Lindhome was really random and fully appreciated...

Sometimes mildly funny unless you're an American!
phill-470-62049828 July 2013
This film was like a really bad version of 'Scary Movie' when it came to movie reference humor. Like Scary Movie it's storyline was thin to say the least but if you're not holding your sides through laughter stitches your going to lose interest, mine went totally after 20 minutes.

I have watched many films that Americans find 'hilarious' and I just don't get why. Even their stand up comics I find coma-inducing boring. Still, maybe that's just me! There are parts in this film which will make some jump plenty of times which in itself is funnier than any of the 'comedy' in it.

As for the actual 'Hell Baby', an hour in and it still wasn't born and at that point I no longer cared if it ever would be and turned the movie off! It could be that after that first hour the film turns a corner and shines with gags and spoofs but the odds were against it and I wasn't going in anyway!

stupid, annoying, worthless

Warning: Spoilers
the name itself attracted me to watch it but it was awful. normally i do not write previews in IMDb but this movie made me do it i don't want anyone else to suffer like me so saying this DO NOT WATCH IT not even if its the last movie on earth it was absolutely a piece of garbage and don't understand why anyone would finance to make such a movie i am sorry if i am coming too strong about my review its just a reflection of my disappointment. just don't watch please. the plot is so weak and the movie could have done without some of the characters like the 90 year old women. and sometimes things happen without any reason. specially how the 90 year old women-thought to be dead, unwrapped herself and came out of her grave. just stupid

Film Festival Screening Review
QBallFra330 April 2013
I wait-listed a ticket for this film at Sundance, knowing nothing about it. In line, I found out that it was a Thomas Lennon film. Awesome - huge fan. Starring Keegan Michael Key? You got me.

While there were lulls and dead spots, ultimately the movie was successful in making fun of common scary movie themes while simultaneously seeming original. It had me laughing much more often than it had me simply watching. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I will say that, aside the middle-aged woman sitting in front of me, the film had everyone engulfed and having fun.

I just found out the film got picked up, and I'm glad. It definitely deserves it. I just hope the suits don't cut out some of the more graphic scenes before its theatrical release.

Hilarious, gross, sexy, original, sometimes even genuinely scary, this film was nothing short of a quality horror film parody.

General movie rating - 6.5/10 Comedy Movie Rating - 8/10

Awful, Awful
Procter-i-d28 July 2013
Before I actually start my review the 2 reviews before made me laugh more than this joke of a film did..

It starts off with a man and a woman arriving at their new home in a "black neighbourhood" straight away you can tell this is going to be terrible but you carry on anyway, You have to give it a chance right? Wrong. The woman is ridiculously portrayed as pregnant (Maybe it's supposed to be funny, It's not) Some guy who apparently lives in their crawl space jumps out at them time and time again but They continue to just let him enter their house when ever He wants. Some ugly hag shows up screaming at any chance She gets again not funny or scary and finally the woman starts doing loads of stupid demonic crap, Like smoking, drinking alcohol, drinking paint stripper while heavily pregnant, and to top it off her boyfriend doesn't ask any questions about this crap,Just because She starts crying? She ends up trying to kill him but again He just shakes it off like it's nothing. The best part about this film are the cops and the priests or fathers who make it ever so slightly funny but not enough to watch it all, Hell even I didn't finish it, I got to the hour mark and that was enough for me the next 40 minutes I just couldn't do.

Overall I wouldn't recommend this film to anybody, Watch paint dry it's far more entertaining than this.

Great sketch based comedy
bkbirge5 August 2013
I loved this movie. If you go in expecting some big budget plot driven parody you'll be disappointed. What you get is sketch based comedy where the absurd situations are purely reasons for the characters to improv some hilarious one liners. These guys can all deadpan with the best of 'em and the whole movie is played that way perfectly. Bonus love if you are from the south and familiar with Cajun cuisine and stereotypes. There is gore, over the top gore but the movie is not based around that nor does it derive it's comedy from the gross factor. I have no doubt that time will be kind to this movie and it will get cult status, there are so many great quotes for it not to have a long life. I hope it makes enough money so the writers and actors can make more improv based deadpan insanity.

Naked Gunn in Horror
arfdawg-124 May 2019
Sort of like the ZAZ boys movies but in the horror genre. There are some laughs along the way but no where near as good as films like Airplane or Naked Gunn.

Finally a parody I loved!
siderite9 January 2014
I grew up with parodies, stuff that was making fun of other movies through references rather than vulgarity or silliness. I tried to enjoy many of the parodies of today and I couldn't, because they were not meant to be real movies, they didn't have acting, but just an ugly caricature of the art.

I am happy to report that Hell Baby is a really fun parody of possession movies! It references a lot of them, but not in a direct recreation of scenes or using toilet humor, instead by taking the parody and putting it into a well acted film. All actors involved played really well, but Rob Corddry was the highlight of the film. Also Keegan-Michael Key added a lot to the comedy of the situation.

The plot is that a family awaiting twins move into a run down house in a bad neighborhood. The house is possessed and soon lovely Leslie Bibb, the pregnant mother, is as well. The demolition of horror clichés soon follows.

Bottom line: I am not really into comedies and I don't easily laugh at them. Parodies have to be even better than a normal comedy, because I've seen the movies they are making fun of and they have to be at least funnier than those - which is a hard thing to do for some of the horror films around. And yet I really enjoyed Hell Baby and I recommend it to just about everyone. Well done!

Best movie ranked under 5.0 on IMDb
hawaiiford-6711122 October 2017
This is quite possibly the best movie ranked under 5.0 on IMDb. Never reviewed here or anything in my life and I've been using IMDb since it started. I felt compelled to communicate that this movie should be at minimum a 6.0. I'm giving it an honest 7 for being hilarious and an instant horror comedy classic.

OMG! Can you say Boring and Dumb?
utahman197111 December 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I can not watch anymore. I am stopping at 21 minutes into it. It is that bad. The comedy horror spoofs are the dumbest movies ever. They aren't funny at all. Dry humor is not funny. Rob Corddry is one of the most stupid comedy actors alive. Keegan-Michael Key is just not funny. Leslie Bibb is hot without the belly. It has been years that I turned off a movie due to can't standing it.

I do not see how anyone on this planet would enjoy this. This one I can actually say I wish there were a negative on the votes. I seen the Scary Movie spoofs of 1 and 2, and no more after. They were whacked and dumb, but this one here takes the cake and more. I was hoping for a normal horror movie, not some what do I do stupid questions, and then doing the most stupid thing, like in this movie.

The only thing that could be interesting, but does not pull this movie out of the bottom of the crap-per, is the F words. The rest is Sh*t. I just want to forget the 21 minutes I watched. It is not a recommended movie, and in the top 10 worst of the worst list of worst movies ever.

Unfunny Garbage
KEmerton19926 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
From what I saw in the trailer, plus the fact that it was made by the people from "Reno 911!" I actually had pretty high hopes for this. It DID start out pretty strong, and had some funny stuff in the first few scenes, but it was very weak in the following scenes. In some parts, I had a hard part figuring out whether they were trying to be funny or genuinely scary, which it seemed like they were doing. As a fan of horror, I was sadly disappointed. Even Riki Lindhome from Garfunkel and Oates (one of my favorite comedy duos) couldn't save this film, and that's saying something. There's not much else to say, it just wasn't funny, or for that matter, good.

A film straight from hell
AntoniTolo14 December 2013
This movie is arguably the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire live.

The humor wasn't actually funny, I didn't even grin or smirk through out the entire movie. If you are thinking of watching this watch it while under the influence of substances because that is the only way to make this movie bearable, when you're not thinking straight that is. Some of the scenes just repeat the same joke over and over again and they just do the same thing all the time whilst staying in the exact same spot. In the worst occasion this went on for 7/10 minutes. This movie is a ghastly unwashable stain on my memory.

Hilarious
djmike-634741 January 2023
Not at all what I was expecting. No one is ever going to read this, but I'm writing it anyway. This was my first movie of 2023. I was looking for a little horror movie to kick off the new year, came across this one and gave it a try. What a surprise. This had me laughing out loud. Due to some unfortunate circumstances I am temporarily stuck in a total care nursing home with a roommate. My Assisted living facility has no heat or hot Water and the State stepped in an shut it down. Why am I telling you all of this you ask? Because this thing makes me type 600 characters. I woke him up, maybe I'll let him watch it. Until then, you watch it, really funny. The movie that is, not me being stuck in a smelly nursing home lol 🙃 😅 😆 😴 Nuff Said Mike Out.

wants to be much more funnier
SnoopyStyle26 February 2018
Jack (Rob Corddry) and his pregnant wife Vanessa (Leslie Bibb) buy a rundown home in a gang-infested New Orleans neighborhood known locally as the House of Blood. F'resnel (Keegan-Michael Key) is their invasive neighbor. Something is going wrong with the pregnancy and Vanessa turns evil. The Vatican sends exorcists Father Sebastian (Robert Ben Garant) and Father Padrigo (Thomas Lennon).

This is written and directed by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon. It feels like a silly comedy from another one of these comedy troupes. while it's mildly humorous, it seems to be aggressively asking if it is funny. It expects to be hilarious but it never rises to that level. I don't think the Corddry Bibb pairing fits this style especially Bibb. It needs someone much more wackier. I loath to suggested that she's funny enough for a hottie. The fact is that she ain't no comedian. It does have comedian Riki Lindhome playing her sister Marjorie. Now, Riki does a full frontal nude comedy bit. While I get the bit as it runs on and on, the nudity definitely overwhelms the comedy. I am impressed with the comedic talents in the cast but it never adds up to something great.

It Has Its Moments
YouPregnant28 July 2013
I was a huge fan of Reno 911 and the state, so this movie was a must see for me. i also love rob corddry so i will see anything he is in. so with all this movie had behind it i guess its easy to see why i was disappointed with my hopes being so high. don't get me wrong the movie is funny enough to watch to the end but it never had me rolling or really any quotable lines to it.

Rob Corddry was funny with his natural reactions like always but i thought the stand out performance in the movie was from Keegan Michael Key, he made every scene he was in funny. ben and tom's roles in the movie just seemed out of place till the very end. "Leslie Bibb really brought something to this role" is a phrase you will never hear someone say. i wonder why they didn't cast Kerri Kenney for the wife role instead the movie moved along nicely till the last 15-20 mins when it just falls flat and totally ran out of steam (baby tossing).

all in all its worth a watch if you got spare time.

It was awful
misskatwethington17 April 2014
Movie was dreadful, not even funny, or scary. I only finished to the hell baby and that wasn't even worth my pain. The movie was low budget, and had the most horrible acting I've seen. I've seen these actors in other films, though as well. And they're decent to say the least. But I guess they got paid to be worse. the effects were bad. Makeup jobs were horrendously bad, acting, once again, horrible. Glad I didn't pay to watch it. The plot during the movie was pointless. Not good enough to be an actual movie but not funny]bad enough to be a spoof. I advise that if you enjoy low budget no plot movies, this will be just fine for you then, But I definitely would not pay to watch this movie, ever. I don't recommend

Don't trust the low rating if you like Comedy Horror!!! This movie ROCKS!
aweofscience12 December 2013
OK, Honestly, first off, this movie deserves a true 100% 7.0 RATING, but I HAD to give it a 10 just to help balance out the ridiculously low rating of a 4.8? SERIOUSLY? I've watched over 10,000 movies in my life (probably). HUGE comedy horror fan. I loved this movie! I laughed so hard so many times. Nudity (hot girls), lots of gore, silly comical scare moments (reminded me of 80's horror movies), plus great actors!

Don't trust the rating, give it watch if you like comedy horrors (Shaun of the Dead, for example, or remember The Burbs with Tom Hanks?)

What this movie is NOT like is the Scary Movies series. I never laughed much (if at all) at the Scary Movie 1-10 or whatever they are at now. Not my kind of humor, but this movie really hit home with me. This was made by the makers of Reno 911, which gives you a hint at the type of comedy it is. I always laugh hard at stuff like Family Guy, Ted, Community, Half Baked, etc.. i guess i would say its that kind of humor.

Generally, if a movie is rated less then a 5.5 on IMDb i won't like it.

This movie is the exception to the rule. Somehow this is a movie that a ton of people seem to rate very low, but I absolutely loved it. Great stoner flick. And I want to make one last point very clear: This is not your standard Redbox crappy horror movie where you feel like you wasted your $1.00. You know, those movies that look like they were filmed with a crappy camera and crappy actors, and they bore you, and its torture to watch more then the first 20 minutes? This movie was a blast for me right at the start.

I don't know if I'm horror or comedy
bcr432 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The title should have been a dead give-away, to a film full of bland ideas. An expectant couple, Jack and Venessa, buys an old house in a hood full of weirdos, just like themselves, hoping white people don"t know about it. Turns out the house is haunted, and hunting on their pregnancy.

When it decides to be a comedy, expect some utterly cliché jokes. Food jokes. Vomit jokes. Walking into you jokes. Stoner jokes. Dick jokes. Porn jokes. Cigarette jokes. Fat jokes. Religion jokes. Taser jokes. Poop jokes ... WTF! All of these pills?

When it decides to be horrific, same old story. Spooky faces, and blood and guts. Period. This is house of blood. All that blood during the final scene but we had a dry birth, and especially how the baby blanket was ready. In the sheets. On the bed. Oh, it's cause we had a dry crying! Poor Jack, name almost rhymes with jock!

Hell baby is immolated by 'daddy', Jack, thanks to an electrocution. Venessa's knack for turpentine!

Props. Couples everywhere! Just look and see

Smiles, no laughter
MacCarmel30 August 2015
This is a 10 minute comedy sketch stretched out to a 98 minute film. Great cast. There is a lot of comedic talent -- writers, creators, actors -- represented here. But the best I could muster were a few smiles.

This is clearly a case of comedians making themselves laugh. Not that there's anything wrong with that, as Seinfeld would say.

Don't watch without your BFF
konan19-13 July 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted my best friend to watch this with me and then I watched it without her and now I hate this movie. Keegan Michael key may have been hilarious as the bulk of the startles, but I am numb to that air of humor when I am filled with so much guilt for prematurely and absent-minded watching this movie without my my friend who I made promise ME that she wouldn't see it without ME. Gross. Almost as gross as the naked old lady they supposedly kill and bury. No. Grosser. In summary, It may have been good but I have consciously destroyed all memory of it because I the thought of watching this without her makes me want to impregnate myself with the spawn of Satan.

Also I liked how the cops' character names were each other's actor names.
