Political agendas all along, entertainment factor inexistent Warning: Spoilers
Here we have the award show that officially goes by the name "Blauer Panther TV & Streaming Award" and the first two words mean "blue panther" of course and given the fact that Germany has never been closer to liberal Hollywood, the proximity of the title to "Black Panther" is probably no coincidence. Tolerance with regard to everything is key no matter what we are talking about as long as it is a factor supported by the far-left. 2022 was also the first year in which this show here carried said name. Before that, it was called the Bavarian Television Awards. The trophy may have been the same already, but yeah you can also still see on it that this is Bavarian-themed because of the blue-and-white shield the panther is carrying. The beginning of these almost exactly two hours focused on the trophy there. It was a clumsy video that had been prerecorded in which the male host of the event talked briefly to the people in charge of literally creating the panther. I am always tempted to write panda, maybe because of my preference in animals. Forgive me if it happens again. But the worst of this sequence from the start was really how they tried to include camera techniques, creative inclusions from movies etc. To depict film magic. It went all kinds of wrong. This is of course no surprise as we got a production here by ARD and Bayerischer Rundfunk. If you know anything about the German television landscape, then you also know that you'd better keep your expectations low for the entire event. I guess we can be glad this did not cross the two-hour mark. It was too long nonetheless. The atrocity already started with the first award. Admittedly, there could have been worse recipients than Markus Lanz, I give them that, but the way the award was explained as if it was something good that this award was determined by one person only, namely Markus Söder, was a complete travesty. Just like seeing the man in person there, first in the audience, then on the stage. Unbearable really.

The show stayed as bad until the end really. It is impossible to fit all the cringeworthy moments that were included into 10,000 characters, but I will just go for the most obvious that was very off with this celebration. The stage was a mess by the way, like logistically, as if there were two audiences and half of the audience could not see what was happening on the other side. Well, they could see it on a screen I suppose and hear the people talk, but that's it. Just as messed-up as the rest really. These short little videos with Fritz Karl and Elena Uhlig did not help either. I mean seriously she is already very difficult to stomach because she is simply not a good actress at all and that is the gentlest way to put things, but how she kept rambling there was especially awful because this is exactly how she is, how every character is that she plays and how she is also in interviews. I have lost some respect for Karl too in recent years because of his film (and partner) choices, but I still feel a bit bad for him to be honest. In the end, they also show up to present the biggest category of the night and it was another lowlight there. I already mentioned one of the two hosts and that would be a man (can't call him an artist) called Checker Tobi. I guess he was included to attract younger audiences to the show? Not sure why else. He is definitely not a talented actor or prominent figure on the Bavarian television landscape. He is not even Bavarian. Horribly clumsy title by the way too with the addition of streaming. Why didn't they just call it Blue Panther? The other host here was Katrin Müller-Hohenstein. She is mostly known for sports television, but yeah what can I say about her. If she is presented to us as an icon or a dominating factor from the television landscape, then I guess we all know what state the industry is in. There is no charm to her, no authenticity and no entertaining talent. I mean it is perfectly fine if one does not possess these attributes and I will not be a judge, but then they should not host or co-host an event like this. She was just utterly bland and forgettable. Her worst moment was maybe when she desperately tried to emphasize twice how people who met during the production of a screen project become friends during shooting. Of course, there we have full harmony everywhere and everybody is friends with everybody.

Another truly low moment was the inclusion of Joko Winterscheidt. We need to keep in mind that him and Heufer-Umlauf shot clips for a previous show where they (or rather Joko, but Klaas is supportive) touched women inappropriately to entertain their audience. And these two present themselves as trailblazers when it comes to gender equality and in the fight against discrimination of females. Epic stuff. KHU was not a part of this event luckily, but Winterscheidt is not much more likeable either. I can also only shake my head when it comes to Thomas Gottschalk nowadays who apparently considers Joko the closest to his successor as the leading figure in German entertainment. Well, this was cringeworthy enough to watch already with how much he saw himself as an icon there apparently. This show was just unbearable from every perspective. As for Winterscheidt, there were also embarrassing moments when he was joking around with his producer and also when he said about her that of course she does not appreciate the attention of being in the limelight etc. Unwatchably bad. Still, this was not when the show hit rock-bottom. That would probably be the combination of Claus Kleber and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnie was not there, but gave a little speech and Kleber who apparently considers himself so much of an all-knowing instance when it comes to German news that you want to vomit turned it into a mess when he used Arnie's words "I'll be back" linked to the corona pandemic. And he thought this was so smart that he used them repeatedly. First he explained to us how the voice of the virus may sound when saying these words where you were already wondering what was going on, if this was a spoof, but no it was real, and then he just went on and on with this nonsense. It was just an absolute travesty and keep in mind this is the man who led the ZDF newsroom (if you wanna call it that) for years. And he is not senile or anything. This is really what German news coverage looks like.

Of course, this already resulted in the show being eventually about nothing else really than politics. We had a documentary about hospitals treating corona patients win with the baitiest and most cringeworthy statements about nurses crying to relieve the tension. We have another documentary win that was about the Ukraine war, which was still really new back then. And there are other examples. If you don't think propaganda was a vital part of an ARD awards show, then there may be no help for you. I applaud those who see through it, even if it is not that difficult in fact. There were more inclusions here, also some small ones, that showed us it is a catastrophic show. Just take the mention of one person who won an award I think and she (I think it was a female) thanked Constantin and Constantin is a very, very questionable company. You will not really find and artistic value in them, but they were always ready to cash in when it came to getting money from the viewers of their films. I think you know what I mean. No need to go into detail. Conchita Wurst was also there for whatever reason and was allowed to deliver the only music performance of the night. I had no idea (s)he had such a poor voice, especially with this song. Admittedly, the idea of giving instruments to children and have them learn them is not a bad idea, but the way it was exploited was also very cringeworthy. As for the awards, the shows that won were all really mediocre you can say. At least not horribly bad, but if you look at the impact German has in Europe, it is shocking how far behind the productions for both small screen and big screen are quality-wise if we compare it to countries like France, but also much smaller countries like Denmark and Austria. And many more.

Now let us look at the acting winners: It is difficult to say something negative about Peter Kurth, even if I also don't think he has that much range and all his characters look very similar, but at least his category was not as much of a travesty as the one for Best Actress. Did anybody have any doubt there who would win? I mean they definitely had to make sure there would be no racism accusations, but the clip from the winner already looked very hammy and try-hard and not talented, no matter how many people they get to say she has talent. Also, are we supposed to see female characters these days as likable when they talk to store detectives or security staff in a way where they abuse their gender to accuse them without any justification od wanting to touch them inappropriately? What an anti-male society we are living in right now. It is pretty sad. Anyway, the moment the winner was announced, the camera was on her before that already which means that the director of the show knew exactly who was winning. Which also questions the entire concept of this show. It was also very random how they had many winners simply being informed before and others announced during the show. But hey, an awards show that has a Schweighöfer show win a category (or even nominated) can never be a good show and one star out of five is actually already way too much. As I stated earlier, I could go on easily about many other aspects and inclusions that were extremely poor, but you get the message. I cannot say anything positive here. Maybe Olli Dittrich was alright because I like him and his little joke early on about how this is not the Oscars was spot-on nicely sarcastic too. Wigald Boning I liked in the past, but not anymore either. So yeah, stay far, far away from the outcome here. A catastrophic awards show from beginning to end.
