Ang Lee made history by releasing Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk in 120 frames per second, but groundbreaking technology doesn’t always instantaneously catch on. Much like how my first-generation Android smartphone worked better as a launching point than an everyday device, Lee’s hyper-realistic wartime drama will be remembered for progressing forward innovation – not execution.
Everything feels too real, to the point of breaking fourth walls into some more pristine reality. Actors are captured like they’re being dangled in a shadowbox before you, dancing like puppets instead of existing in some cinematic fantasy world. Realism becomes a prison, constricting Lee’s creative license to shot selection alone. When does a movie stop being just a movie?

15 years ago today was a beautiful day for U2 fans: On October 30, 2000, their album “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” hit record store shelves. It was the U2’s 10th studio album and was largely considered a glorious return to form for the Irish band, following the mixed reception of their 1997 album, “Pop.” Among the successful singles on U2’s first album of the 2000s were “Elevation,” “Walk On” and “Beautiful Day.” Guitarist the Edge said of the album in the book “U2 by U2,” “‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind’ was an album that acknowledged our own past, which we had never really done before…. I was playing the Gibson Explorer. This was really the sound of U2, the sound we had made our own and then abandoned as far back as ‘War.’” He also points out plenty that was fresh and new for the band with the album,...

We presume this left a bad taste in Bobby Flay's mouth. On Tuesday, the 50-year-old Food Network star received a star on the Hollywood Walk on Fame—the first celebrity chef to do so. But during his speech, fans happened to take notice of the green prop plane flying overhead, which carried a banner that read "cheater." An eyewitness says the plane appeared just as Flay took the stage and continued to circle the area until the cookbook author was finished speaking. While there's no confirmation, many are speculating the insult was aimed at Flay, who filed for divorce from Stephanie March in April after 10 years of marriage and has been accused of...

Following a brief spell out of the spotlight, Steve Martin is staging his movie comeback for a new adaptation cooking up over at Tristar. The renowned funnyman has joined Brokeback Mountain helmer Ang Lee’s forthcoming flick, Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.
The adaptation is based on the best-selling novel by Ben Fountain, and will trace the story of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn. Newcomer Joe Alwyn nabbed the titular role last week, playing the youngster who survives a harrowing Iraq battle that is fortuitously captured by news cameras. He and his squad, Bravo Company, return stateside at the behest of the U.S. administration for a promotional tour, which culminates at the spectacular halftime show of a Thanksgiving Day football game. It’s not all cheers, however, as the company face a dreaded return to the frontline.

It’s been almost three months since we last visited Storybrooke and Once Upon a Time said goodbye to the Frozen gang, introducing us to the Queens of Darkness, our new villains for the back half of Season 4. However, while we know that Maleficent (Kristin Bauer van Straten), Ursula (Merrin Dungey), and Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit) will certainly be bringing all their evilness with them when they arrive in Storybrooke, is it possible that they could be adding a new “queen” to their ranks before all is said and done? This all-new promo for Once Upon a Time, which debuted last night during the Oscars, certainly makes it seem like a possibility, as Emma may end up taking, as Rumpelstiltskin says in the video, a “walk on the dark side.” “For Cruella, Ursula, and Maleficent to obtain their happy endings, they must find someone whose soul can be molded,...

And we're truly off. Ballots are in hands. Academy voters, who hopefully spent as much time soaking up the year's offerings through screeners and screenings over the holiday break as they did hitting the slopes, will be putting pencil to paper, finger to keyboard beginning Monday with an 11-day voting window closing on Jan. 8. Let's see what's happening in the lead-up to that stretch… At the box office, "Unbroken" is all the rage. The film, already riding the coattails of a best-selling book, took advantage of a holiday release frame that had very little in the way of adult drama competition. It was ultimately critic-proof, as audiences are digging it and Academy members may well, too. On the limited release side of things, meanwhile, was "American Sniper," which sailed to a record $212,000 average from four theaters over the four-day weekend. Each film landed in the "A" Cinemascore range with audiences,...

Walk on the bland side in a comic book of biblical proportionsThe good thing about Ridley Scott’s latest special effects lollapalooza is going into it you know exactly what to expect. The story, rough as it is, is taken from the Bible so there are no spoilers to be had. Even so, when you see seeing Ramses broken […]...
