So, is it The Watchers or is it The Watched? In North America it’s the former, in the UK and Ireland it’s the latter, and it’s a testament to the all-over-the-shop plotting of Ishana Night Shyamalan’s feature debut that it doesn’t really make much difference whichever way you look at it. Working from a folk-horror novel by A.M. Shine, Shyamalan takes a simple single-location genre premise — literally, it’s a cabin-in-the-woods story — and somehow creates a thriller that’s both unnecessarily complex and almost entirely uninteresting.
Alarm bells ring when the curtain rises, and a voiceover tells us of the forest that’s not on any map, that draws in lost souls “like a moth to a flame” and is so deadly that “those that wander in never come back out”. Dakota Fanning is speaking from experience as she gives tips for the next generation of child stars. On Sunday, June 2, the actress attended the New York City premiere of The Watchers, her new supernatural thriller set deep in the forests of Ireland. The film was directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, daughter of the acclaimed M. Night Shyamalan. As long as you love it, you’re in the right place, Fanning advised, emphasizing determination and passion. She continued, Sometimes you’re working in a cold, wet forest, and if you can still have fun there, then you’re on the right track. Dakota’s...

Hollywood and nepotism are two things that go hand in hand it seems. While the concept of nepotism is not new, recently it has gained more traction as more and more people are pointing out how every other actor that gets inducted into the Hollywood regime turns out to be a son, a daughter, a niece or nephew of another Hollywood personality.

A young woman takes an unfortunate detour deep into a mysterious Irish forest only to find that not only can't she make her way out again, but something is watching her, and it is not friendly. The directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan – daughter of you-know-who – demonstrates that the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree in The Watchers, an adaptation of A.M. Shine’s fantasy sci-fi mystery novel from 2021. Set in the emerald wilds of western Ireland, The Watchers follows twenty-something Mina (Dakota Fanning) on what should be a routine bird transfer (?) from a pet shop to a zoo that goes awry when she becomes lost in a never-ending forest. After her car goes dead and night begins to fall, she...

After several weeks of disappointing openings, Hollywood has its fingers crossed that the old-school star power of Will Smith returning to the Bad Boys franchise will give moviegoers a push to return to theaters. Indeed, the well-reviewed four-fuel has the benefit of opening hot on the heels of the franchise’s biggest entry to date, Bad Boys For Life, which made over $200 million domestically. It opened to a gargantuan $62 million, and while Bad Boys: Ride or Die seems unlikely to make that much money, it should still do decently.
I’m predicting an opening in the $40 million range, which would be an ok number for a franchise that, previously, was curiously light at the box office. Let’s remember that the first movie only actually made $65 million domestically, while the huge-budget sequel, Bad Boys 2, was considered something of a flop in 2003 when it made “only” $138 million, despite opening at...

Deep in the woods of West Ireland — in “a forest that does not appear on any map” — there is a house. A steel door, blessed with numerous locks and bolts to keep its occupants safe, is the most prominent feature up front. The back of the house appears, at first, to be a wall-length mirror; it’s actually a one-way picture window. No one on the inside can see what’s happening outside. But anyone or any thing that might be lurking outside? They have a perfect, proscenium-style view into whatever is happening inside.

“The Watchers” is the first film directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the 24-year-old daughter of M. Night Shyamalan. Its title refers to a race of spindly ash-gray monsters who haunt an Irish woods, gathering at night around a concrete fortress where the film’s four characters have holed up in a state of semi-permanent refuge. The building has just one room, an entire wall of which is a two-way mirror through which the Watchers peer, all because..they like to watch.
At the same time, the title could almost be referring to anyone who will watch this movie with eyes on the inevitable question of how much of a chip off the old Shyamalan block it is. Is “The Watchers” a glossy/clever mystery horror thriller? Yes. Did Ishana Night Shyamalan, whose father is one of the producers, write the movie as well as direct it? Yes (though she adapted...

There’s a simplicity to writer/director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s feature debut, The Watchers, an adaptation of the novel by A.M. Shine. The horror fairy tale traps four strangers in a mysterious forest untethered from reality, where they must observe a handful of straightforward rules to appease the inhuman things that come to observe them every night. It’s a setup that presents fertile ground to mine chills from Irish folklore and psychological distress, but Shyamalan gets too caught up in mythological exposition to instill any tension or scares.

Some of the most boldly assured first features by women in the past 20 years have been horror. Think Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook, Julia Ducournau’s Raw or Rose Glass’ Saint Maud. On the strength of The Watchers, Ishana Night Shyamalan, the 23-year-old daughter of You Know Who, fails to make that list, despite having what appear to be considerable resources thrown at her. While Dakota Fanning does yeoman’s work in the central role, this is basically the usual Irish hooey about faeries and changelings and other pesky entities dressed up in ponderous Jungian doubles theory.

The notion of seeing the "Shyamalan" name attached to any given title has always been as fascinating a journey as the films themselves. Anyone who was (unfairly) crowned "The Next Spielberg" at such an early juncture was probably doomed to have that follow them for the rest of their career, but M. Night Shyamalan managed to rewrite his own ending multiple times over, improbably enough: first weathering his status as an up-and-coming visionary, then becoming something of a pariah through the inevitable dry spell that seemed to cement his reputation, and finally culminating with several stripped-down, yet quintessentially Shyamalan hits in a row. Perhaps it's only fitting, then, that the next phase in this twisting odyssey has now arrived — this time, in the form of the next generation of Shyamalan storytellers.

If anything could revive the worn-out nepotism discourse, it would be this summer’s horror offerings. In August we have M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming thriller, Trap, built around an arena show for a pop superstar played by his pop-singer daughter, Saleka. And this Friday you can catch the directorial debut of his other daughter, Inasha Night Shyamalan. The Watchers, which is based on the novel by A.M. Shine, has a promising premise and compelling imagery, but can’t quite live up to those modest hopes.
The Watchers follows Mina (Dakota Fanning), an antisocial pet-store clerk tasked with delivering a rare yellow parrot to a client in another town. Her trip brings her to a mysterious forest that has a tendency for swallowing up anyone who enters. With the sun setting and her car nowhere to be found, Mina takes shelter in a strange one-room building (called the Coop) with three others,...

A well-paced supernatural horror movie that’s built atop a high-concept premise, sustained by impressively elegant direction, hobbled by some of the clunkiest dialogue you’ve ever heard (to say nothing of the non-characters forced to speak it), and then undone by a twist ending so clearly telegraphed from the start that it might as well have been sent to the third act by Western Union, “The Watchers” offers ample evidence to suggest that first-time feature director Ishana Night Shyamalan — of the M. Night Shyamalans — probably wasn’t the most rebellious of children.
If there’s much about her debut that left me wishing the apple had fallen a little further from the tree, there’s also no denying that the “Unbreakable” filmmaker’s daughter has the skill to follow in her father’s footsteps, which she does here even when the material is begging her to blaze her own trail.

Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die hopefully will hit $75M or more in its global debut this weekend, in a marketplace that has suffered from not only lackluster product but lack thereof. Broken out, that’s $40M+ in U.S. and Canada and $35M abroad in a 92% footprint.
Presales for the R-rated fourthquel are behind that of the previous pre-Covid threequel, Bad Boys for Life, which hit a franchise-high stateside opening of $62.5M 3-day and $101M worldwide in early 2020. A few weeks ago, domestic projections were at $50M, but that simmered to $40M of late per several sources; Sony is officially calling the U.S. start at $30M+. Trepidation stems from the offbeat marketplace, which sources believe will pick up over Father’s Day with Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 (currently at a $80M-$85M U.S./Canada projection).

Let’s get the worst of it out of the way: We estimate, at best, a $700 million total domestic gross for June, or 30 percent down from last year. We’ll close the month at least 25 percent below the first half of 2023. There’s no mystery as to why: fewer high-impact releases, with last year’s strikes still taking their toll.
June also has three potential breakouts with “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) Friday, “Inside Out 2” (Disney) June 14, and “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) June 28. They also have high expectations which, if met, would go some way to restoring confidence. Fall short and the argument of “Well, this movie was never meant to be a blockbuster” will have run its course.
Everyone knew that 2024 would not be a great year. It was never going to equal the $9.1 billion of 2023, but $8.5 billion was the hope and $8 billion was the consensus.

“Try not to die!”
When Dakota Fanning’s Mina prepares for a night out with a bird on loan from the pet shop, she gives him that warning in jest before bolting out the door. Little does she know, the sunny yellow bird will soon parrot that phrase back to her as she faces unimaginable horrors deep in the woods of Ireland.
Thankfully, the real bird had a more calming presence on set. “Her real name was Sunshine. She was great! Easygoing. No problems. Got a lot of attention. Everyone really loved her and took really good care of her. She was munching on blueberries most of the time in her little cage,” Fanning says of her feathered co-star.
“The Watchers,” in theaters Friday from Warner Bros., follows Mina as she finds herself trapped in the forest with three strangers, forced to abide by the rules of mysterious malevolent creatures each night.

In the new thriller The Watchers, a group of strangers are brought together by unexpected circumstances. Written and directed by Ishana Shyamalan, the creepy story features Dakota Fanning, Georgina Campbell, Olwen Fouere, and Oliver Finnegan. And frankly, it’s not hard to see a little inspiration from when it comes to the strange and mysterious tale it tells. What are “The Watchers?” Well, I won’t spoil it here, but like the tagline claims, they see everything. I recently sat down for a few terrific interviews with Ms. Dakota Fanning, as well as Georgina Campbell and the storyteller, Ishana Shyamalan. It was an absolute pleasure chatting with all three. Having spoken to both Fanning and Campbell previously, it was nice to discuss their latest.

Ishana Shyamalan has long been transfixed by the spell of folklore and the stories we leave only half-remembered. This was true of her work as a director on Servant, the cryptic Apple TV+ series executive produced by her father M. Night Shyamalan, and it’s true of her new horror film The Watchers, a movie set in the most menacing “enchanted forest” you’ll ever see. But for Ishana, it goes back even further than that.
“I think this particular mythology is something I connected very strongly to as a child,” Shyamalan says when we sit down with her ahead of The Watchers’ release this weekend, “in particular this darker take on it.” It is why she directly sought out material like A.M. Shine’s novel of the same name as the kind of source material she wanted for her directorial debut. It is why she found herself in search of Ireland.

Despite her age, Dakota Fanning may very well be one of the most experienced actors on any given set. Her big-screen career began at the mere age of seven when she shared scenes with Hollywood heavyweights like Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer in I Am Sam.

As Fanning takes on her latest role in M. This latest foray into the supernatural with The Watchers offers an opportunity to explore the impact of those early experiences on Fanning’s acting repertoire.

Whatcha gonna do when “Bad Boys” comes for the box office? If you’re a theater owner, the answer is hopefully sell some tickets.
Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” the fourth installment in the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence-led buddy cop series, is targeting $30 million to $50 million from 3,850 theaters in its first weekend of release. As that cavernous range suggests, estimates vary greatly depending on whom you ask. Sony has offered the soft $30 million figure, while rivals and independent tracking services believe the $45 million to $50 million range is more likely.
Adding to opening-weekend ambiguity: The sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys,” 2003’s “Bad Boys II” and 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” is Smith’s first major film to grace the big screen since he assaulted Chris Rock onstage at the 2022 Oscars. Have audiences soured on Smith or will they forgive and forget in favor of another “Bad Boys” reunion?...

While some parents try to shield their children from horror movies, you might have a different experience if your father is M. Night Shyamalan.
Ishana Night Shyamalan, the 24-year-old middle daughter of The Sixth Sense and Split director, celebrated the premiere of her own feature directorial debut The Watchers in New York on Sunday. Like her father before her, her first feature combines elements of the horror and fantasy genres. Shyamalan penned the script herself, adapting the story from the gothic horror novel of the same name by A.M. Shine.
The Watchers follows Mina (played by Dakota Fanning), an artist who finds herself held captive in an isolated house in the woods of Ireland with three strangers; the group is regularly observed by mysterious creatures through one-way glass.

During this year's CinemaCon back in April, audiences were given the first look at the feature directorial debut of Ishana Shyamalan, "The Watchers." Based on the novel of the same name from A.M. Shine, the story centers on an artist named Mina (Dakota Fanning) who gets stranded in the woods in western Ireland. Her only source of refuge is a strange box in the middle of a clearing, where the front wall is a gigantic one-way mirror. She suddenly realizes that she has been trapped with three strangers who have all been in the sanctuary known as "The Coop" for months themselves. Each night, mysterious creatures arrive outside The Coop to watch them from the outside. The group is unable to see the creatures, but the creatures see everything. The film's trailer has wisely kept any other plot details under wraps, allowing Shyamalan's film to entice audiences and creep them out to the fullest extent.

“Inside Out 2” (Disney/Pixar – June 14)
Disney and Pixar Animation are hoping to make a comeback with this sequel to Pete Docter‘s 2015 Oscar-winning animated blockbuster, which grossed $850.6 million worldwide after opening with $90.4 million domestically. Directed by Kelsey Mann, the sequel introduces a number of new emotions including Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke, Envy voiced by Emmy winner Ayo Edebiri, Paul Walter Hauser voicing Embarassment, and Adèle Exarchopoulos as Ennui (because it’s a French emotion). Mindy Kaling‘s Disgust has also been recast with Liza Lapira from “The Equalizer.” In the “before times,” there was little reason for this not to open with more than $100 million,...

As a very bad summer movie season at the box office drones on, it looks like Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett are going to do their very best to save the day. Sony's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" hits theaters next weekend and will look to reignite the box office after a particularly quiet, post-Memorial Day weekend. While Will Smith is no longer the surefire bet he once was in the '90s and early 2000s, in the early going, it looks like this one will be a winner for the A-lister and his co-star Martin Lawrence.
Directed once again by "Bad Boys for Life" duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, the upcoming fourth entry in the "Bad Boys" franchise is going to easily top the charts on its opening weekend with a debut in the $48 to $58 million range, per Box Office Theory. When Marvel announced the return of the X-Men ’97 animated series, almost every single fan was skeptical about its success. The MCU had recently seen a slew of flops, and the 90s fans who grew up with the series were worried that their fond memories would be tainted by “wokeness” as well, but Beau DeMayo’s series proved everyone wrong.

Horror has been one of the most reliable genres at the box office since the pandemic began. Even movies like "The Wretched" helped keep the industry's pulse going while most theaters were shut down in 2020. Unfortunately, 2024 has, up to this point, not produced a major break-out hit yet, with only indie success stories like "Immaculate" and "Late Night with the Devil" to celebrate. We've yet to have a "Smile" ($22.6 million domestic opening/$217 million global finish) or a "M3GAN" ($30.4 million domestic opening/$180 million worldwide). Lionsgate, however, hopes to change that with the release of "The Strangers: Chapter 1."
Directed by Renny Harlin, this is the first entry in a new trilogy of films that will reboot the franchise started by director Bryan Bertino in 2008 with his home invasion classic "The Strangers." As the title implies, "Chapter 1" is just the first entry in the trilogy, which has already been completely filmed.

At the start of 2023, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan secured a multi-year deal with Warner Bros., and soon after that deal was made, we heard that his first movie for Warner Bros. would be Trap, a “psychological thriller set at a concert”. That project made its way through production toward the end of last year, with lead roles going to Josh Hartnett, fresh off his appearance in Oppenheimer (pictured below), and Shyamalan’s daughter Saleka. Now the film’s August 9th theatrical release date is swiftly approaching, so today (a couple weeks after we saw the trailer), a poster for the movie has arrived online, along with an original song Saleka recorded for the movie, where she plays a pop star called Lady Raven. The poster can be seen at the bottom of this article, and you can listen to the Lady Raven song “Release” at LadyRavenMusic.com.
