Every actor has a few films that might not have performed as well as they wanted, including blockbuster star Denzel Washington. But one box-office disappointment was different from the others, as it may have been a direct result of the O.J. Simpson verdict.
How the O.J. Simpson trial might’ve affected ‘Devil in a Blue Dress’ Denzel Washington | Miikka Skaffari/FilmMagic
Devil in a Blue Dress saw Oscar-winner Washington play Easy Rawlins, a private detective investigating a missing woman. The 1995 movie was based on a series of books that Washington and the film’s director Carl Franklin were interested in at the time. The fact that the film was about a black investigator in the 1940s added another layer to Franklin’s noir film for him to play with.
“It gives you another obstacle,” Franklin said in an interview with Slate. “Of course, obstacles are the key to drama.

The upcoming serial killer horror movie marks the return of director Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Gretel & Hansel). Nicolas Cage stars alongside Maika Monroe, with Monroe playing an FBI agent and Cage playing a serial killer.

In 2019, Sandra Oh simultaneously received her seventh and eighth acting Emmy nominations for “Killing Eve” (drama lead) and “Saturday Night Live” (comedy guest). Five years later, her performance bid total is set to reach an even dozen thanks to her respective lead and supporting performances in the telefilm “Quiz Lady” and the limited series “The Sympathizer.” Earning TV academy recognition for these two roles would make her the eighth woman to compete for both possible limited program acting awards at once.
In “Quiz Lady,” which premiered on Hulu last November, Oh plays Jenny Yum, a vivacious yet reckless woman who reunites with her estranged younger sister (Awkwafina) to resolve their mother’s gambling debts. “The Sympathizer,” which began airing on HBO in April, features her in the role of Sofia Mori, a 1970s Japanese American secretary who becomes entangled with a communist spy (Hoa Xuande).

Horror fans have been keeping a very close eye on director Osgood Perkins' next project, and the first social media reactions for the mysterious Longlegs are in.
These reactions are highly positive, and it sounds like the movie is a genuinely disturbing, terrifying experience.
Though Longlegs definitely seems to be keeping its biggest secrets firmly under wraps for the time being (and the teasers are all the better for it), we do know that the plot revolves around a rookie FBI agent (It Follows star Maika Monroe) attempting to track down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families.
Cage's character has largely been kept out of the marketing, aside from one unsettling shot.
Check out the social media posts below, and keep an eye out for a new trailer.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner has joined the cast of the hit ABC procedural series 9-1-1. The popular television star will play a nurse named Amir in the series, and the synopsis says he has a “complicated past.” The network has released a first-look sneak peek at his role on the show and what fans can expect.
Here is a look at the first look at Malcolm-Jamal Warner on 9-1-1.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner Joins 9-1-1 Cast
Malcolm-Jamal Warner has a long history as a popular television star. Most fans got to know him when he played Theodore Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. That was one of the most-watched sitcoms of the 1990s and it helped make the young man a star, although he mostly stuck with television after that.
Thanks to his breakout on The Cosby Show, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his role as Theo.

In what could have easily been the next season of “American Crime Story,” Lionsgate Television is diving into the gambling scandal that’s rocked Major League Baseball since March.
Lionsgate is developing a scripted series about how Shohei Ohtani, the Japanese superstar of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Angels, became the subject of massive fraud and theft at the hands of his longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Just days ago, Mizuhara agreed to plead guilty to accusations he stole almost $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts.
Scott Delman (“Station Eleven”) will produce along with Albert Chen, a former senior editor with Sports Illustrated, MLB Network contributor, and the writer of “Billion Dollar Fantasy” about the battle between gambling apps DraftKings and FanDuel. No platform or creative talent is being announced at this stage. Executive Max Elins is overseeing the project for Lionsgate Television.

My guest this week is Judith Light.
Last season, we saw her take home an Emmy for her guest role in Poker Face, in which she hilariously climbed a rose trellis while cleverly camouflaged in a natty pink and green pantsuit. Such is Light’s talent: from the humor of the aforementioned old folks’ home resident terrorist, to her heartfelt turn as matriarch Shelley Pfefferman in Transparent; from The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, to ABC sitcom Who’s the Boss, she’s done it all. And then there are the multiple Tony wins…
Right now, Light can be seen in Max series Julia, in which she plays Blanche Knopf, the legendary publisher of Julia Child’s books, and in Starz’s horror-comedy show Shining Vale, Light is Courteney Cox’s fabulously passive-aggressive mother Joan.
Next up, Light will star opposite Billy Crystal, who also serves as EP,...

One of the best recent rule changes the Television Academy recently made was the 2020 decision to expand the Drama and Comedy series categories to include eight nominees, regardless of the number of entries. But if the goal of the Primetime Emmys is to be reflective of the shows that most engaged viewers and voters alike throughout the TV season, it needs to now go one step further. The TV Academy needs to expand the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category to eight nominees as well.
In the decade since they have re-split the Limited Series and TV Movie categories there have been plenty of winners that were a cultural moment, from “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story” to “Big Little Lies” to “Watchmen,” but these event series were not as common an occurrence. Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened, an event that has had ramifications to the television schedule still present today.

The first full-length trailer for Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three has just hit (via Toonado.com), and it teases what looks to be a high-stakes finale to this animated trilogy (and the Tomorrowverse as we know it).

In terms of cameos, the trailer ends with another Batman: The Animated Series tease. Batman Beyond also appears, but perhaps the biggest surprise comes when we return to the world of the Super Friends!

John Travolta returned to television in a full-length role after nearly four decades in Ryan Murphy’s The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. His last TV role was Vinnie Barbarino in Welcome Back, Kotter which lasted from 1975 to 1979. It was not an easy decision to take on the role but Travolta had a personal Hollywood ‘consulting’ team to advise him. This esteemed group of people included Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, Rita Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, and Michael Eisner.

Ten years ago today, TMZ published an audio recording of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling saying racist things surreptitiously captured by his mistress, V. Stiviano. The recording led to his downfall, and changed the NBA forever.
If you’re not a basketball fan, you might not remember the story. But FX’s limited series “Clipped,” which just got its first trailer today, makes a case for the Donald Sterling saga as a “People v. O.J. Simpson”-style story about race, class, power, and that unique corner of America known as Los Angeles.
Per FX, “Clipped” “charts the collision between a dysfunctional basketball organization and even less functional marriage, and the precipitating tape’s impact on an ensemble of characters striving to win against the backdrop of the most cursed team in the league.”
“Clipped” stars Ed O’Neill as Sterling, a man who made his fortune building an L.

HBO had the Lakers, now FX has the Clippers. Will the series’ fates differ (as the real-life teams’ have), or will “Clipped” face the same quick, quiet end as “Winning Time”? We’ll find out this June, when FX’s latest ripped-from-the-headlines adaptation premieres exclusively on Hulu. True crime genre is getting more and more popular each day and there’s no secret why: gripping stories about things that seem impossible in real life. However, what makes them even more exciting for the viewers is the fact that what is shown on screen has actually happened in reality, and that just makes people lose their minds.
One of the recently released true crime dramas is Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. The miniseries tells the gripping story of the performer Richard Gadd, who at his young age was harassed by a female stalker.
The story is powerful and already got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, but here we have 5 more jaw-dropping series that follow real-life terrifying stories.
1. When They See Us (2019)
When They See Us is just 3% short of a perfect score, but that means nothing in this case because the series is considered the best true crime of all time.

‘The Jinx’ Filmmaker Andrew Jarecki Says Despite True-Crime Boom Robert Durst “Is Kind of a Unicorn”
Since HBO’s The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst aired in 2015, Durst, who was arrested shortly before the docuseries’ shocking finale, was convicted of murder in 2021 before dying months later.
In that time, true-crime projects have proliferated in the wake of hits like The Jinx and contemporary docuseries Making a Murderer, the podcast Serial and based-on-a-true-story fictional series like The People v. O.J. Simpson and subsequent American Crime Story installments.
Yet despite being part of this early true-crime wave, The Jinx filmmaker Andrew Jarecki says that there were things about Durst that made him even more riveting than an unsolved murder.
“I think Bob is kind of a unicorn because he’s so unusual, because he’s such a powerful personality and also reckless and also willing to be honest about things that most people aren’t honest about, so you feel like you’re seeing inside him,...

As you prepare to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series, be sure to check out our photo gallery highlighting the likeliest contenders. As of now, the frontrunner is the FX anthology “Fargo,” which is seeking the honor for its fifth iteration after winning for its first in 2014. It was also recognized here in 2016 and 2017.
FX has indeed produced several serious Best Limited Series candidates this year, including “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans,” “A Murder at the End of the World,” and “Shōgun.” Its most recent victories came for the first two seasons of “American Crime Story” (2016; 2018).
Having conquered this category with “The Queen’s Gambit” (2021) and “Beef” (2023), Netflix’s best shot at achieving three wins in four years lies with “Ripley.” Other strong contenders from the streamer include “Griselda” and “Black Mirror,” the latter of which won Best TV Movie every year from 2017 to 2019 but can no longer compete...

The passing of O.J. Simpson at the age of 76 has sparked a resurgence in discussions surrounding his tumultuous life, marked by both achievements and legal controversies.
Emerging as a star in the NFL, Simpson’s prowess on the football field paved the way for a successful transition to Hollywood during the 1980s and 1990s, where his charisma and striking appearance captivated audiences.
However, the period between June 1994 and October 1995 truly defined Simpson’s legacy.
The nation was gripped by the sensational accusations of murder and the subsequent high-profile trial, which divided public opinion and dominated headlines.
The tragic deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, coupled with the media frenzy that ensued, served as a sobering moment for American culture, leaving a lasting impact that continues to resonate over two decades later.

O.J. Simpson died April 10. But the media age ushered in by his presence, his saga and his white Bronco, remains very much with us.
An all-time great NFL running back-turned-actor, Simpson was a minor celebrity and part of a circle of fame-adjacent Los Angeles hangers-on in the 1990s. The killing of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman, on June 12, 1994, converted Simpson instantly into an object of national obsession; five days later, Simpson failed to turn himself in after the Los Angeles Police Department ordered him to surrender on charges of first-degree murder, and engaged the LAPD in a low-speed car chase.
The details of this have been chewed over, including by the recent double dose of O.J. stories — FX’s series “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story” and Ezra Edelman’s documentary “O.J.: Made in America,” both released in 2016 — and yet they still boggle the mind.

In 2006, Stephen King's "Lisey's Story" won the Bram Stoker Award for its meticulous exploration of the art of writing, entwined with how repressed memories burst to the surface and begin to define who we are. King's novel examines what it means to be an author, where a mythical pool is likened to a wellspring of creativity, with the ability to both agonize and heal. Compared to most of King's works, "Lisey's Story" is a tad harder to breeze through — however, the halting nature of the story perfectly encapsulates the complexities of writing about something personal, along with the myriad emotions it evokes. This story in particular also holds deep personal meaning for King, contributing to the fact that it is still one of his favorite works.

“True Detective” is back with a bang thanks to an electric fourth entry in the franchise from Issa López, who injects the crime series with darkness, humanity, and intrigue. This fourth edition of the HBO hit follows Jodie Foster as a police chief in the fictional town of Ennis, Alaska. She leads an investigation into the disappearance of eight men from a research station. Seasons two and three of “True Detective” weren’t received as rapturously as the first season, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, but numerous critics have proclaimed that this fourth entry is as good if not better than season one.
Katie Rife (IGN) opined: “‘True Detective: Night Country’ is the best season of the series since the original. The horror sequences are especially good, and creator Issa López thoughtfully engages with the Alaska location without sacrificing the intrigue of a good detective story.”

Sofia Vergara is back on our small screens in a big way thanks to the her new Netflix series “Griselda.” The lavish production chronicles the rise of Griselda Blanco, known as the “cocaine Godmother,” as she flees from Medellín, Colombia, to Miami and creates one of the most notorious cartels in history.

There are regular true crime podcasts, and then there's "Happy Face," an endlessly disturbing 12-part deep dive into the life of a serial killer -- as told by his own daughter. The podcast from iHeartMedia first debuted in 2018, telling the harrowing story of the years Melissa Moore spent being raised by the man who would eventually become known as The Happy Face Killer. Now, a new Paramount+ series based on the same story is in the works with an intriguing cast and crew and Moore on board as an executive producer.
"Happy Face" will be the first true crime series released via the Paramount-owned streamer since 2020's "Interrogation," and only the second to date. While competing streamers like Peacock have been in the true crime adaptation game from the start (see: "Dr. Death"), Paramount+ has mostly made the "Yellowstone" extended universe its bread and butter up until this point.

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.

Sophie Butcher (Empire) observed: “Moore is on great form here. She spits out profanities and ultimatums in a clipped, crisp accent, wearing...

The first three seasons of FX’s “Fargo” were embraced by the Emmys, racking up loads of nominations including for Best Limited Series. However, season four broke that pattern as critics and viewers alike came away largely disappointed by the series — it didn’t quite match up to the heights of the first three entries.
But “Fargo” season five look like it will get the show back in the Emmy spotlight. The season is set in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2019 and tells the story of Juno Temple as a midwestern housewife plunged into dangers she thought were firmly in her past. Jon Hamm delivers a change-of-pace performance as a sheriff while Jennifer Jason Leigh turns in a wildly entertaining performance. Critics agree, this fifth season is a return to form.
Dan Eivar (Financial Times) observed: “The show’s masterful, suspense-ratcheting approach to action sequences is matched by its assured writing and considered character work.

The delicious “Mary & George” may well serve up a feast of Emmy nominations. This limited series on Starz stars Julianne Moore as the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran). The Countess uses her son as a pawn to scheme her way to riches, titles, and influence in 1600s England.
The series, adapted by award-winning playwright D.C. Moore from Benjamin Woolley’s bestseller “The King’s Assassin,” is a sumptuous period drama. The show is in the same vein as Yorgos Lanthimos‘ Oscar-winning “The Favourite,” swapping out the usual stuffy nature of such fare for a raucous, romp through history.
Moore, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2015 for “Still Alice,” is on reliably good form here. She chews up every scene and commands the screen with authority. Galitzine, meanwhile, proves he is more than just the most...

"Drive-Away Dolls" may be fresh out in theaters, but the wild (and wildly entertaining) road trip comedy from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke has already reached one destination quicker than expected: it's now available on digital platforms.
If you missed your chance to catch "Drive-Away Dolls" in cinemas -- which, given the lackluster box office impression it made during its late February debut, wouldn't be surprising -- you can still watch the ribald queer comedy from the comfort of your living room for about the price of two matinee tickets. The movie is currently available to rent or own on premium video-on-demand platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and Google Play. Each platform seems to be offering a 4K Ultra HD rental option for $19.99, while some also include a purchase price of $29.99. When it comes to the film's rollout on the home market, though, "Drive-Away Dolls" still has some road left to travel.
