Officially, Prime Video’s spy drama Mr. and Mrs. Smith is based on the 2005 film of the same name. Unofficially, however, its origins are a bit murkier. Though this 2024 streaming iteration of Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine shares its basic premise with the previous Brad Pitt and Angelina-starring version (a married couple who also happen to be spies), the series diverges from it in some major ways as well.
In an interview with The Today Show, Glover (who also co-created the 2024 series) even admitted to not having seen the 2005 Doug Liman-directed film when he decided to embark upon the project. Co-creator Francesca Sloane wrote in an open letter to fans that “No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie. But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”

Even in a hit-or-miss "Saturday Night Live" episode, you can always count on the "Please Don't Destroy" guys to deliver a digital short that is decent at the very least. Such was the case with "Roast," a short where Dakota Johnson walks into the Pdd office and inexplicably starts roasting all three of the guys. She has some plausible deniability during the first two or three digs, but the moment she calls them "The Lonelier Island" — a reference to SNL's original digital short comedy trio whom the Pdd guys still live in the shadow of — the gloves come off.

With Talking Heads set to reunite next month for a live Q&a about their legendary concert film, Stop Making Sense, David Byrne has reflected on their acrimonious breakup and expressed regret about how he handled the situation.
“As a younger person, I was not as pleasant to be around. When I was working on some Talking Heads shows, I was more of a little tyrant,” Byrne told People. “And then I learned to relax, and I also learned that collaborating with people, both sides get more if there’s a good relationship instead of me telling everybody what to do.”
He added, “I think [the end] wasn’t handled well. It was kind of ugly.”
As pioneers of new wave, Talking Heads released eight albums from their formation in 1975 through their split in December 1991. While speaking to the Los Angeles Times the following year, drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth...

Mumbai, Aug 7 (Ians) Indian auteur Anurag Kashyap, whose films like ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Ugly’, ‘Dev.D’, ‘Black Friday’ and others have strengthened the parallel cinema in India and have cultivated an enormous fan base, is set to visit the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (Iffm) as his upcoming film ‘Kennedy’ has been selected as the closing film at the festival.
Kashyap, who is often credited as the poster boy of the present day indie cinema in India, shared that he had the idea of ‘Kennedy’ brewing inside him for 20 years but it only got materialised when the pandemic hit the world. In a way, the pandemic became the perfect physical setting for Kashyap’s story as he wanted to give it a very “comic book” kind of a spin to the story.

Barbie star America Ferrera is no stranger to big franchises. Before appearing in Greta Gerwig’s ode to womanhood and in NBC’s beloved sitcom Superstore, Ferrera got her start on a very relatable ABC primetime soap Ugly Betty.
First premiering in 2006, Ugly Betty ran for four season on network television and built up a devoted fanbase. The series, which is now streaming on Netflix, starred Ferrera as the titular “Ugly” Betty Suarez, a braces-wearing 22-year-old fashion neophyte from Queens. The show follows the awkward Betty as she lands a job at high fashion magazine Mode in Manhattan wear she works as a personal assistant under failson editor-in-chief Daniel Meade (Eric Mabius).

Review‘Barbie’ is unabashedly pop feminism. But then, this is also why it is easily accessible and often becomes the entry point for someone who’s never thought about these ideas.ScreengrabFeminist films exist because of the patriarchy and making feminist films in the patriarchy means the filmmaker is expected to address all aspects of the patriarchy in the film or it means they’ve been too patriarchal themselves. If that feels too difficult to just say, imagine how hard it must be to execute. In other words, feminist films often set themselves up for failure and disappointment because they’re accused of being too superficial, too elite, too privileged, too light-hearted, too…well, it’s too frikkin’ much. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is likely to face all of these accusations (it’s also too pink and too consumerist) but I laughed out loud at least six times in the movie,...

It’s Day 4 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 77 of the WGA strike.
“Discover the past, live the present and fight the future,” was an apt message from The X-Files‘ 1998 spinoff movie and it’s one that could be applied to the current actors and writers strike.
It seems timely, then, that some of those responsible for writing and starring in the long-running sci-fi hit, were outside Fox as part of an X-Files reunion.
Star David Duchovny told Deadline that there are so many issues to try and get through, particularly AI. “I think the powers that be have a lot on their plate right now with trying to figure out, kicking the can down the road with the AI stuff. What is it capable of? They’re philosophical questions,” he said.
Duchovny also highlighted streaming residuals. “We always worked in a business that rewarded success and didn’t want failure.

In recent years, one of Hindi cinema's most distinct voices to reckon with, Anurag Kashyap, has made a few interesting choices behind the camera. His latest feature, starring Karan Mehta and Alaya F, is a romantic drama targeted at the Gen Z, thus continuing the director's pattern of not allowing himself to be boxed in. Kashyap has credited his daughter for the film's genesis in multiple interviews, of how she brought a valuable insight about the generation to the project. But is the film really as simple as it appears on the surface? Soon after watching, you realize how inevitable it is to separate a filmmaker's voice from his work, as a wise storyteller just needs to package the story around it differently.

Ott platforms have not just changed the rules of the entertainment market, they have given, literally, a second life to Bollywood stars who had faded away from the public eye for quite some time. Of late, a number of senior actors, who had virtually retired from the industry or had limited theatrical releases, are now being reinvented and getting a hugely positive response to their work, courtesy of streaming platforms.
Here’s a list of nine actors who are back in the reckoning in their second innings because of Ott:
Harman Baweja
The actor made his debut with the 2008 release “Love Story 2050”, directed by his father Harry Baweja, and charmed the audience with his dancing skills (and little else!), but he was dismissed by all as the poor man’s Hrithik Roshan.

Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are a different kind of duo in their Apple TV+ series Platonic, which sees the Neighbors stars go from on-screen married couple to a pair of friends reconnecting after a fall out, who couldn’t possibly have less of a romantic spark.
In the half-hour comedy from Neighbors director Nick Stoller and Francesca Delbanco, Sylvia (Byrne) sees an Instagram post that her former best friend Will (Rogen) is divorcing his wife — whom she hated and her honesty about that years ago tanked their friendship — and decides to reach out in an effort to reconnect. The attorney-turned-stay-at-home mom, whose youngest child is now in school full time, and the newly single brew master are each at a crossroads and quickly fall into old habits as they turn to each other for support.

Cannes, May 25 (Ians) In a candid interview with ‘Deadline’ at Cannes, Sunny Leone talked about how one call from ‘Bigg Boss’ enabled her to transition from an adult film star of some 12 year’s standing (2001-13) to a mainstream film star with 30 projects behind her, walking the red carpet of the world’s most prestigious film festival.
In Cannes for the world premiere of Anurag Kashyap’s cop noir movie ‘Kennedy’ in the Midnight Section, Leone told ‘Deadline’ how ‘Bigg Boss’ executives relentlessly pursued her. They even sent the Canadian Indian actress a powerpoint presentation to convince her to come on board.
She remembered telling her then boyfriend, now husband, who urged her to commit: “‘You’re out of your mind — I’m not going to India, they’ll hate me.’ I’ve already gone through so much hate in that community.”

Canadian-Indian-American actor Sunny Leone is making her Cannes debut with Anurag Kashyap’s “Kennedy.”
Presumed dead for years, Kennedy (Rahul Bhat) is an insomniac former cop who continues to work for a corrupt system while seeking redemption. Leone plays a pivotal character named Charlie.
“She’s a little bit of a complex character and she hides behind some of her motions. And one of the things she hides behind the most is this laugh. And I believe she’s a woman who’s caught in two different worlds – one is the one that she wants to live in and one is the one she has been deliberately caught up in. I really enjoyed playing this character. And I think she is someone who’s trying her very best to be as strong as possible at every moment of the day,” Leone told Variety.
