FX’s John Landgraf’s annual tally of original series has revealed that there were 516 scripted titles on air in 2023, which was a 12% drop from 2022.
This marks the first reduction in scripted series in over a decade, since Landgraf and his team have been keeping score, outside of 2020’s Covid year.
It is notably down on the 600 shows that aired in 2022, which itself was a 7% rise from the year before.
Landgraf, speaking at TCA, joked that he was “finally correct” when it comes to peak TV. He said that it proves that even a broken watch is right twice day.
It comes 12 months after Landgraf predicted that there would be a “strong” indication that there would be a decline last year. While he was wrong a couple of times before, the exec has been proved right this time.
Landgraf is Chairman, FX Content and FX Productions. He was handed more...

With the news of Matthew Perry’s death in late October, viewers seemingly turned to his best-known role as Chandler Bing on Friends to remember him.
The beloved comedy gathered 583 million minutes of viewing on Max for the week of Oct. 23-29 (Perry, 54, was found dead at his home on Oct. 28). That was a 31 percent gain over the previous week and the biggest total watch time for Friends since early February.
A pair of movies, No Hard Feelings and Five Nights at Freddy’s, also made strong showings on the Nielsen streaming charts for the week. The former, starring Jennifer Lawrence, led the rankings with 1.13 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix in the United States — the equivalent of about 10.97 full showings of the movie. That’s two thirds of the worldwide total Netflix reported in its own rankings for the week.
Five Nights at Freddy’s, meanwhile, drew 740 million minutes of viewing...

The arrival of the latest DC superhero is nearly upon us, and he may make a bigger impression at the box office than we thought. Previous reports stated that Blue Beetle was tracking toward a $17 million opening at the domestic box office, but a new report has seen that number almost double.
According to Deadline, early tracking for Blue Beetle finds the DC movie eyeing a $30 million opening at the domestic box office. While that may not seem impressive for a superhero movie, especially after The Flash bombed with a $55 million opening, it’s important to remember that Blue Beetle has a significantly lower budget. The report states that the film is tracking very well with Latino and Hispanic audiences, who are eager to see DC’s first Latino superhero on the big screen.
With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes still ongoing, that means that much of the talent behind...

We have some sad news to share today, as The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that writer/director Manny Coto – who is best known for directing the 1992 horror comedy slasher Dr. Giggles (watch it Here) – has passed away at the age of 62, following a thirteen month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Manuel Hector Coto was born in Havana, Cuba on June 10, 1961, then his family emigrated to the U.S. just a few months later. Coto and his siblings were raised in Orlando, Florida, and he was still a child when a fascination with Star Trek inspired him to start shooting short films with his father’s 8mm camera. After attending college in New Orleans, he moved out to Los Angeles in 1983 and started working in commercials. He eventually crossed paths with Tippi Hedren, who worked with Alfred Hitchcock on The Birds and Marnie, and was able to get her to agree to...

The relationship between Dana Walden and John Landgraf has long been subject of corporate intrigue. The superstar TV executives had run on parallel tracks at Fox and continued to do so after they both made the transition to Disney following the 2019 acquisition until this past June. The shocking dismissal of Peter Rice, which was followed by Walden’s elevation to his post as Chairman of Disney General Entertainment, changed the dynamic between the two veteran executives, with one of them (Landgraf) reporting to the other (Walden) for the first time since Landgraf joined FX in 2004.
The move got tongues wagging in the Hollywood gossip-filled echo chamber. During the FX executive session at TCA today, Landgraf put any rumors about a potential discord to rest by offering effusive praise and equivocal support to Walden in his opening remarks.
“Speaking of my good fortune to have such long and successful relationships, Dana...

We comb through the annals of horror anthology classics while carefully putting together a list of the best of the best!
The public’s fascination with anthologies has become as rabid as a horde of zombies fighting over fresh flesh with a pack of starving vampires. This embrace has hit a fever pitch in both the television and film worlds. And every time you turn around, it feels like there’s a new franchise adding to this increasingly ubiquitous sub-subgenre.
With successful series like V/H/S and The ABCs of Death putting out a new entry nearly every year, and recent contenders like Tales of Halloween and Holidays jumping into the fray, it can become easy to get overwhelmed and drown in all of the horror anthology goodness. Thankfully, we’ve put together a life preserver (a 31-chambered one) to keep you afloat and direct you...
