It's easy to overlook just how big the "Shrek" movies are given that they are mostly a giant meme factory and a source for a controversial Scottish accent. This is a franchise that changed animation and showed DreamWorks Animation was a powerhouse that could compete with Disney and Pixar. It competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes, the first animated film in almost 50 years to do so. It won the first Oscar for Best Animated Feature and helped cement the rise of computer animation. There is a reason this is the first animated movie of the 21st century to be selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
Since then, "Shrek" has grown into a giant franchise, with spin-offs, musicals, and much more ... including a very popular themed rave and even custom Crocs. This is why it might be tough for casual movie watchers to keep track of which movies to watch,...

NBCUniversal is rearranging the toys it uses in its kids-programming playground.
The company’s Universal Kids will place a bigger bet on its ties to DreamWorks Animation, which NBCU bought in August of 2016 for approximately $3.8 billion. The network will stop developing original shows that are not based on DreamWorks properties, according to a person familiar with the matter, though it will continue to acquire series made by third-party producers.
The move takes place amid declining ratings and an executive restructure that has the network’s operations reporting directly to Frances Berwick, the executive who oversees NBCU’s lifestyle-based cable networks, including Bravo and Oxygen. Deirdre Brennan, the former general manager of Universal Kids, left in February. Universal Kids has been the primary vehicle NBCU hoped to ride to get into the multi-billion dollar market for kids entertainment, jockeying with rivals like Walt Disney, Viacom’s Nickelodeon and WarnerMedia’s Cartoon Network.

The visually stunning Batman Ninja is the creative result of a trio of anime’s finest filmmakers – director Jumpei Mizusaki (Opening Animation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), writer Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann), and character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) produced the original movie with Warner Bros. Japan. The script was then reinterpreted and rewritten for English-language distribution by award-winning screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia.

The visually stunning Batman Ninja is the creative result of a trio of anime’s finest filmmakers – director Jumpei Mizusaki (Opening Animation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), writer Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann), and character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) produced the original movie with Warner Bros. Japan. The script was then reinterpreted and rewritten for English-language distribution by award-winning screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supah Ninjas, Afro Samurai).
Batman Ninja takes a journey across the ages as Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine transports many of Batman’s worst enemies to feudal Japan – along with the Dark Knight and a few of his allies. The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land, with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. As his traditional high-tech weaponry is exhausted almost immediately, Batman must rely on his intellect and his allies – including Catwoman...

1. “Grace and Frankie” Season 4 (available January 19)
Why Should I Watch It? “Grace and Frankie” has become one of the best Netflix series out there. Honestly, it always has been, but continued quality has solidified this tale of unexpected friendship as one of the most observant, confident, and entertaining comedies out there. Lily Tomlin is as dynamite as ever. Jane Fonda knows just when to bring down the house. Neither is afraid to engage in delicate topics typically ignored by mainstream TV shows, and the writers (including co-creator Marta Kauffman) continue to introduce pertinent new storylines while bringing in wonderful new faces. This year, that face belongs to Lisa Kudrow, so if you need one more reason to watch, she’s certainly it.
Best Episode: Reviews and review-like posts such as this are being held until Wednesday, January 17. Traditionally, embargoes so close to the release date are taken as a bad sign for the series’ quality,...

Horror fans have been looking forward to seeing Mike Flanagan's Before I Wake since the film was teased in trailers back in 2015, but bankruptcy issues at Relativity Media delayed and ultimately brought the movie's release to a halt. Since that time, Flanagan directed two well-received films for Netflix, and the streaming service has now revealed that they will bring Before I Wake out of film purgatory and into the warm glow of the TV screen.
Netflix revealed the exciting Before I Wake news in their full announcement of titles being added to their streaming lineup in January of 2018. Starring Jacob Tremblay, Thomas Jane, and Kate Bosworth, Before I Wake will be available to watch on the streaming service beginning Friday, January 5th, marking its first official release in the Us (it was previously released internationally, including in the UK by Netflix).

It’s a great time to be a “Black Mirror” fan. The anthology series’ third season debuted on Netflix last October and earned serious buzz, with episodes like “Nosedive” and “San Junipero” breaking out and becoming some of the series’ most talked about installments. The latter even earned two Emmy nominations, one for Outstanding TV Movie and another for Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic special.
Fans have been wondering when the series will return for a fourth season, and unfortunately it doesn’t seem likely that it will be this year. Joining Variety on its Remote Controlled podcast, co-creators Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones confirmed they are currently in the middle of filming the sixth and final episode of Season 4. Because of the lengthy post-production process required for each episode,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best family-friendly show of the past or current TV season? Live-action, animated, talk, documentary, all genres are fair game.
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
I believe we’ve learned by now that the answer to all questions can be either “The Simpsons” or “Method & Red” and since this question calls for a current show, “The Simpsons” would be a truly valid answer, with its mixture of multi-tiered cultural literacy and a consistently sophisticated approach to family unity, faith and community. And I, as always, reject any snide, “That show hasn’t been good for 15 years” criticisms.
But I don’t think that’s my real answer,...

1. “Friends From College” Season 1 (available July 14)
Why Should I Watch It? Ivy League graduates are largely insufferable, but Netflix is challenging that notion by assembling the most likable cast in recent memory to play a bunch of Harvard alumni reuniting in their late 30s. (Ok, so this list pretty much proves that all famous Ivy Leaguers are awesome, but you know the non-famous are impossible bores. No? Just me? Damn it.) Anyway, “Friends From College” brings together Keegan-Michael Key (Ethan), Cobie Smulders (Lisa), Annie Parisse (Sam), Nat Faxon (Nick), Fred Savage (Max), and Jae Suh Park (Marianne) — plus Kate McKinnon and Ike Barinholtz as guest stars — in a comedic exploration of old friendships from the creative minds of Nicholas Stoller (“Neighbors: Sorority Rising,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) and Francesca Delbanco. Sounds like an ideal mixer, no? Good — at least we can agree on something.

Hundreds of thousands of stray cats roam the streets of Istanbul and are a distinct part of the citizen’s daily life. For director Ceyda Torun, the felines were such an important part of her childhood that she set out to make the documentary “Kedi.”
The film takes a look at the history of cats roaming freely through the metropolis of Istanbul, as well as shows how these animals live between two worlds – neither wild nor tame – bringing joy and purpose to those people they choose to adopt. “Kedi” specifically centers on seven kitties: Sari the hustler, Bengü the lover, Psikopat the psycho, Deniz the social butterfly, Aslan Parçasi the hunter, Duman the gentleman and Gamin the player.
“It is said cats are aware of God’s existence,” says the voiceover in the latest trailer. “While dogs think people are God, cats don’t.”

1. “Trollhunters” Season 1 (available December 23)
Why Should I Watch It? Two big reasons: First, the director of “Pan’s Labyrinth,” Guillermo del Toro, created “Trollhunters,” an animated event series about a teenager who discovers a mystical amulet that unveils a secret civilization of trolls beneath his hometown. If the Oscar nominee himself isn’t enough, there’s another creative force — in addition to the impressive voice cast of Kelsey Grammer, Ron Perlman and Charlie Saxton — to pay attention to: Said teenager is voiced by Anton Yelchin, in what’s being billed his final role. After debuting two episodes at New York Comic-Con in October, del Toro said he never even discussed replacing Yelchin. “We didn’t go into a meeting,” del Toro said. “We didn’t have a conference. […] He was a great guy to work with, he was proud of what he did, we were proud of what he did.

Well this looked a little different from my normal comics reading diet. Not a grown man in spandex to be seen for sure, although a cat in boots probably trumps that anyway. Puss in Boots is, of course, the fairy tale character brought to life by DreamWorks in their Shrek films, and something of a fan favourite too. This collection collects together the four issues that were individually published a few months back, each issue featuring two stories so here we get eight tales for our money. Are they ‘Amazing’ tales as promised? Let’s find out.
As you would imagine, although the creative teams change from story to story, the tone is kept very light but consistent, perfect for the younger fans of the Shrek films. The story lengths also vary,...

The Lion Guard is a somewhat surprisingly good show airing on Disney Junior, and the story of Kion and his friends continues with a new DVD release The Lion Guard: Unleash the Power.
The release is the first collection of episodes available on DVD, and it’s not only a good selection because these are episodes that focus on the individual members of the Guard, but because these are some of the series’ most rewatchable efforts.
The show is not just a fun adventure for kids, but the series takes on a broad range within its episodic content, tackling some tricky issues, without actually decoding its own efforts and bogging down in overt explanation.
For example, the episode Fuli’s New Family spans a variety of issues, but chief among them is an examination of the idea that just because doing something seems objectively “right,” or, “how friends act,...

1. “BoJack Horseman” Season 3 (available July 22)
Why Should I Watch It? “BoJack Horseman” is a literal and figurative treasure trove of joy, insight and harsh truths. On the literal side, so many small moments pop up throughout the 30-minute episodes it takes repeat viewings to appreciate them all — from the .gif-worthy transitionary bits to the heavy-hitting quips. Yet figuratively, “BoJack” offers up a distinct, strong viewpoint that isn’t afraid to take questions to an existential level, which creates deeper subjective realizations each time you watch (and re-watch, and re-watch, and re-watch…). This is as “must-see” as TV gets — every time.
Best Episode: We wouldn’t dare spoil the new season — not even by telling you what episode to look forward to — and we’ve already covered Season 2. (After much deliberation, we chose “Escape From L.A.” as the best episode.) So let’s just set this time aside to honor the...
