Warning: Spoilers
Location photography always benefits a motion picture, and El Achrar outdoes most other films in that department by frequenting the graveyards of El Alamein, final resting place of those who fought and died during the battle generally considered World War II's turning point. It's a suitably haunting setting for this tough Egyptian crime drama about dirty money and (sometimes literal) back-stabbing amongst thieves. Shot in black and white, El Achrar's interiors look great but its outside shots frequently appear overexposed. Nonetheless, this is a very good thriller that also features an excellent score from an unknown composer whose identity is left untranslated by Rare Films and Mores DVD, marketed under the title Duel at Alamein.
