Update: A trailer for Never Let Go was shown during the Lionsgate panel at CinemaCon today, and JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was in attendance. Here’s a description of what he saw: “Halle Berry and her two kids are living in a cabin after the world ends. This cabin has a rope/pulley system & they must be attached to you when leaving the house. The monsters/entities (they are very vague on what the threat is but its something that is physical) can’t get you with the rope attached to you and so they (monsters?) are trying to convince one child to doubt the rope safety. They want them to detach and if so, we see that it would put them in grave danger. The kids are twins born in a house that they have never left because of the dangers on the outside. The creatures (which you...

Now Deadline reports that Mother Land has been retitled Never Let Go – and filming is underway! Berry is joined in the cast by Percy Daggs IV (The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey) and Anthony B. If you've listened to our Corpse Club member-exclusive episode, then you know we're big fans of Junji Ito, the imaginative mind behind so many memorable manga creations, including Tomie, which is moving forward as an adaptation series on Quibi with Alexandre Aja directing, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick writing, and Adeline Rudolph starring in the lead role.
A premiere date and release schedule for Tomie has yet to be announced, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are announced. In the meantime, we have additional info below, and in case you missed it, Aja discussed the Tomie series when we interviewed him last year for his new movie Crawl.

Exclusive: Quibi has given a green light to Tomie, a series based on Junji Ito’s cult hit horror manga series of the same name, with Adeline Rudolph attached to star in the title role. The series hails from director-producer Alexandre Aja (High Tension), writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (Aquaman), Sony Pictures Television and Ucp, a division of Universal Studio Group.
Written by Johnson-McGoldrick, Tomie is the story of a beautiful high school girl (Rudolph) who goes missing and pieces of her body are discovered scattered around a small town. But what starts out as a murder mystery turns into something even more horrific.
Aja and Johnson-McGoldrick executive produce. Hiroki Shirota is co-producer. Sony Pictures Television co-produces with Ucp.
Rudolph can currently be seen as Agatha in the Netflix series The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Riverdale) and Greg Berlanti. Before acting, Adeline was a successful model in the European,...

A group of alligators is called a “congregation.” A bad movie about alligators is called “Crawl.”
If your experience with the film is anything like mine, you were first introduced to it via a trailer that’s been provoking unintentional laughter in movie theaters over the last few months. You shouldn’t judge a movie by its marketing, just as you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but suffice to say that Alexandre Aja’s thriller lives down to expectations.
It’s toothless despite its alligator antagonists, not least because it never bothers linking its premise — a category 5 hurricane in Florida that causes a flood — to the existential threat hastening such extreme weather events in the first place. There’s something strange, in 2019, about a movie like this positioning actual alligators as the villain and not, you know, climate change; that the term is never even mentioned seems deliberately myopic,...

A mind-bending cinematic experience, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's The Endless has widely been received as one of the most innovative and intriguing movies released this century, and we're thrilled that the filmmaking duo now have their next project lined up, the sci-fi thriller Synchronic.
Deadline reports that Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan are in discussions to headline the cast of Synchronic, which will be the fourth feature-length directorial effort for Benson and Moorhead.
Written by Benson, Synchronic follows "two New Orleans paramedics [who would be played by Mackie and Dornan], whose lives are ripped apart after encountering a series of horrific deaths linked to a designer drug with bizarre, otherworldly effects." Benson and Moorhead will produce the project via Rustic Films, alongside David Lawson Jr.
Here's what the directing duo had to say about the casting of the lead roles for Synchronic (via Deadline):

Science, bitch! Deadline reports that Aaron Paul is joining the cast of “Westworld” for its upcoming third season, marking the three-time Emmy winner’s return to prestige television after his roles in “Breaking Bad” and “The Path.” No word yet on who the former Jesse Pinkman will be playing, but speculation is sure to abound — especially as “Westworld,” even more than most shows, thrives on encouraging audiences to spend as much time figuring out what might happen next as they do actually watching it.
All three of Paul’s Emmy wins came for his lauded performance opposite Bryan Cranston on “Breaking Bad,” which aired five seasons from 2008–2013 and has become one of the most revered television series of all time; in addition to starring on all three seasons of Hulu’s cult drama “The Path,” he voices Todd Chavez on Netflix’s “BoJack Horseman.” Paul’s silver-screen career includes roles...

Crawl, a new horror movie about a hurricane from Alexandre Aja, adds a terrifying wrinkle to an already horrible natural disaster.
Right now all of Hollywood is fawning over the box office might of superheroes, but there have been plenty of small to mid-budget success stories over the last year. A Quiet Place, for example, was last April’s Cinderella thriller was released by Paramount on a reasonable budget of $17 million and went on to gross nearly $240 million worldwide. Hence why Paramount might be eager to team with well-known horror auteurs like Alexandre Aja and Sam Raimi for a new original concept. So enters Crawl.
The film is working from a screenplay by Aja and Shawn and Michael Rasmussen. It also marks Aja's first feature-length directorial effort since 2016’s The 9th Life of Louis Drax. However, genre fans will likely know him best from his 2000s output,...

Don't get us wrong, we know Jamie Dornan has popped up quite a bit in 2016. He's taken on new roles, like that sexy doctor in The 9th Life of Louis Drax. He steamed up the Fifty Shades Darker set and blessed us with a shirtless beach day. He even made a handsome red carpet appearance! But, you know what? We just won't be satisfied until we see him as Christian Grey once again. We have a feeling a great many people are on the same page, so we figured these gifts might help all of us last until the second Fifty Shades movie arrives in 2017.

Labor Day weekend has never been the home for prime specialized releases, but it is a spot where well-positioned films going broader can thrive. That was the case for “Hell or High Water” (Lionsgate), which gained momentum and looks to be a dominant film for weeks ahead — perhaps even into the awards season. Don’t be surprised if it outgrosses many of the highly touted premieres at Telluride and Toronto.
However, the weekend was unkind to veteran comedy creators; both Kevin Smith’s “Yoga Hosers” (Invincible) and “Max Rose” (Paladin) starring Jerry Lewis received mostly negative reviews and little interest in their initial regular theatrical dates.

The 9th Life Of Louis Drax is…well…interesting. Let’s put it that way. Surely you’d think a comatose boy’s adventure through subconscious waters (literal representation) would trump all, but – or, rather, instead – we’re presented an overbearing story about the dangers of infidelity. Alexandre Aja attempts to parlay his stranglehold on horror into something more darkly whimsical, which unfortunately doesn’t translate into intensified family drama.
It’s pretty harmless younger-adult material adapted from Liz Jensen’s source novelization, and by harmless, I mean a sobering lullaby that ushers in dreamland. Blame blandness, blame Jamie Dornan’s papier-mâché exterior, blame tone deaf narration – honestly, blame it all – because there’s a touching story buried underneath all this soap-opera daddy drama. One that’s damn hard to find…

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
It feels like the window between Toronto International Film Festival screenings to our local multiplexes has compressed to non-existence. I’m not saying there aren’t a few gems with no intention of being released this side of the New Year (I’m looking at you Free Fire), but there are at least six September releases that will have been shown at Tiff mere weeks or even days beforehand. Either the cinematic quality of blockbusters has gone through the roof or festival programmers have fallen a tad too commercial.

Plot: A doctor (Jamie Dornan) tries to help a young boy after he suffers a horrible fall that leaves him in a coma, but finds himself falling for the boy’s alluring mother (Sarah Gadon). Review: You gotta wonder who the audience is for The 9th Life Of Louis Drax. Is it for kids? It certainly feels that way at times, with star Aiden Longworth (as Louis) getting the lion’s share of... By the looks of its film adaptation, The 9th Life of Louis Drax appears to be a very imaginative, well-written book. But popular fiction does not always translate into a good motion picture, and, sadly, it did not in the case of this story.
The plot revolves around the eponymous character, who after one accident too many has finally landed in a coma. Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) is a calamity-prone child who ominously narrates at the outset that it was a even mistake he was born. He is protected by a beautiful young mother, Natalie, portrayed by Sarah Gadon (who had another turn as a misunderstood vixen in this summer’s indie film Indignation). While in a coma, he tells of his fantastical life and adventures, including the relationships with his estranged father Peter (Aaron Paul) and his quirky psychologist, Dr. Perez (a silly Oliver Platt).

Ten years after Anthony Minghella optioned Liz Jensen‘s The 9th Life of Louis Drax to develop cinematically, it was his son Max who saw it begin production. The younger Minghella’s first credited screenplay, probably brought to director Alexandre Aja on set of their previous collaboration Horns, it would ultimately take another two for the finished film’s release. If I were to wager a guess as to why I’d say the distributors found themselves painted in a corner unable to figure out how to sell it. Rated R for reasons that probably could have been cut to earn a PG-13 if desired, the story arrives from the viewpoint of a nine year-old boy—his dark fantasy delivered in a way that feels perfectly primed for teenagers rather than adults.
Young Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) is an original. He’s smart, perceptive, and extremely accident-prone from the womb.

“Accident-prone” is how doctors describe the main character of “The 9th Life of Louis Drax,” a nine-year-old boy who’s survived nine near-death experiences. Louis has been electrocuted, stung by a swarm of bees, and had a chandelier fall on him as a baby, each time narrowly avoiding death to start a new “life.” Can a single child get into that many accidents, or are greater forces at work? That is the question looming over every frame of director Alexandre Aja’s mysterious thriller based on Liz Jensen’s best-selling novel of the same name. Though the movie skillfully straddles the line between the real and supernatural, it never delivers on its darkly intriguing premise.

“The 9th Life of Louis Drax” works as both a children’s movie for adults and a grownup movie for kids, a rare balancing act most young-adult fare can’t pull off. Director Alexandre Aja‘s big-screen version of the best-selling novel by Liz Jensen (adapted by Max Minghella) is the kind of film you can imagine today’s kiddos one day recalling as the first “real” movie they saw growing up, its tone dark but not despairing. The film’s titular young hero (Aiden Longworth) is as accident-prone as he is resilient: Louis has survived one near-death experience in each year of his life.

Okay, film fans let’s get serious. Really serious now. It’s September, so we’re done with all that summertime fluff. Though we’ll see another flick set in that galaxy far, far away in just a couple months, it’s now the season for those sober, somber awards contenders. And what better award bait than a literary adaptation. Y’know, bringing a big best-selling book to the big screen. This weekend another classy tome heads into theatres with The Light Between The Oceans. Oh, and the flick we’re about to discuss stars an actor who became the talk of the planet with his role in a steamy novel-turned-movie just last year. But’s what’s with this whimsical title, you may ask. Well, it may sound like a children’s story (like The Bfg) or even a “young adult” novel, but its focus quickly shifts to deceiving...

Director/producer Alexandre Aja has enjoyed a rather eclectic path throughout his career, and I’ve always appreciated how he unapologetically makes the films he wants to make. In 2014, he brought Joe Hill’s Horns to the big screen, and in The 9th Life of Louis Drax, he delivers another darkly fantastical examination of the complex human condition, making for one of his most ambitious and challenging films to date.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Aja about how The 9th Life of Louis Drax came about due to his work on Horns, his experience collaborating with writer Max Minghella, his thoughts on directing versus producing, and more.

As a director with such a penchant for the grizzly and off-kilter, Alexandre Aja became a tad too embedded in synthetic studio horror to mature into a visionary film-maker. His second feature, Switchblade Romance, showed great promise in terms of crafting an apt, stark bravura to accompany the story but Aja soon nose-dived into the […]

The term ‘passion project’ has become something of a cliched expression, bandied around on a frequent basis within the film industry. But for Max Minghella, who presents his debut screenplay The 9th Life of Louis Drax, it’s a fitting way of describing his very personal relationship with this particular story – as one that once […]

The 9th Life Of Louis Drax is a pitch-black psychological drama disguised as a romantic melodrama and shot like a family-friendly fantasy film. Remnants of director Alexandre Aja’s horror-movie past appear in startling flashes, like the sight of a child’s pale, lifeless body on a metal slab under sickly florescent light. These would be less jarring were the rest of the film not shot in a warm, golden light that gives the back of everyone’s head an angelic glow. Particularly in scenes with his psychiatrist, young star Aiden Longworth delivers dialogue laced with a precocious cynicism that’s completely missing from the cloying whimsy of his frequent voice-over narration. In other words, this movie can’t decide how it wants to look or what it wants to say. You could even call the jumble of styles and tones “quirky,” were you so inclined.

★★★☆☆ Perhaps the most uniquely disheartening cinema-going experience is when you enjoy the film you've watched (there's a good story, a good cast and so forth), but you can see all the exciting directions it could have explored, yet failed to pursue. Such is the case with the enticingly titled The 9th Life of Louis Drax. The film brings up some interesting ideas: what technology exists to channel a person in a comatose state? Is it nature or nurture that shapes a child's personality? But while Louis Drax is stylish, chilly and presents an inviting puzzle for viewers to piece together, is it enough to keep us drawn in?...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Fede Alvarez’s thriller Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems), starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang, won the weekend, but it did way more than we predicted, doing better than most movies released in the last weekend of August, winning the weekend with $26.4 million, pretty much double what I predicted. That’s a pretty great testament to the power of Screen Gems’ marketing campaign and that’s more than double what the movie cost to make. Jason Statham’s Mechanic: Resurrection (Summit/Lionsgate) didn’t fare as well as it opened in fifth place with $7.5 million in 2,258 theaters, about where I predicted. Of the more moderate releases, the Obama date movie Southside with You (Roadside Attractions) took in $3 million in around 800 theaters,...

Molly Parker has lived in L.A. for 15 years now.
For a time it seemed like you couldn’t make a Canadian film without giving the actor from Pitt Meadows, B.C., a role.
And though Parker has long since found success south of the border — particularly on TV shows like "Six Feet Under", "Deadwood", and most recently Netflix’ "House of Cards" where she plays Congresswoman Jackie Sharp — she’ll jump at most chances to return home.

It’s hard to say much about director’s Alexandre Aja’s latest movie The 9th Life of Louis Drax without spoiling some of its many twists.
Based on Liz Jensen’s novel and adapted by actor Max Minghella (who appeared in Aja’s previous movie Horns), the thriller stars Aiden Longworth as the title character, a young accident-prone boy who has survived numerous near-death experiences only to fall off a cliff while picnicking with his parents (Aaron Paul and Sarah Gadon). The fall puts Louis into a coma and as his father, the prime suspect, goes on the run, Louis’ mother starts to have feelings for his doctor (Jamie Dornan), who also wonders if there’s more to what happened than what he’s being told.

It’s been two years since audiences last saw Gillian Anderson as the driven and obsessive Stella Gibson, the detective superintendent who’s been after serial killer Paul Spector (played by Jamie Dornan) in BBC Two’s drama “The Fall.” A new teaser trailer for the third installment has just been released and shows Gibson being haunted by the murderer who was last shot at the end of Season 2.
“You’re under arrest, you’re going to prison,” we hear Anderson’s voice say as she’s seen swimming, recalling the words that she last spoke to Spector and what he told her.
“I live at a level of intensity unknown to you and others of your type,” we hear him say. “You will never know the almost God-like power that I feel when that last bit of breath leaves a body. That feeling of complete possession.”

While police investigate the cause of Louis’ near-fatal fall and the whereabouts of his violent father Peter [Aaron Paul], acclaimed neurologist Dr. Allan Pascal [Jamie Dornan] uses unorthodox techniques to try to tap into the boy’s unconscious mind and reveal the truth about the events that led to his condition. But as he’s drawn deeper and deeper into the mystery of Louis’ seeming ability to cheat death, the doctor finds himself falling for Louis’ mother, Natalie [Sarah Gadon]. As new clues emerge in the case, a shocking revelation changes the fates of Louis Drax and everyone around him.
