Laurelpocalypse
ThomasDrufke28 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Arrow has been great to all of us hasn't it? It has consistently been my favorite show on television for the past 3 years and given us some of the best storytelling possible for a 23 episode season. But I just cant accept the show-runners turning Laurel into the new Canary. It's not logical, especially for a show so hell-bent on using reality to ground it's show in. I'm trying to like her character arc this season but it's just not doing it for me. It doesn't help that Caity Lotz was such an incredible Canary last season.

But tonight had it's many bright spots. I said it last week and I will say it again, I really enjoy the unusual character interactions we have gotten in Oliver's absence. Roy really stood out to me this week as a truly improved character. He fell into the shadow of the show the first two seasons but he is starting to fit into the mold of what the show is doing these days. Even though Diggle didn't have much to do this week, he still had the best line of the night to Laurel, "What the hell do you think you're doing Laurel?!" . It basically summed up exactly what I was, and hopefully the rest of the audience, was thinking watching her out in the field. I do appreciate them showing her struggles as she begins this crime fighting rampage. Her intentions make sense, it's just going to be a frustrating story to watch unfold.

We got to see some of Oliver in the present time line again. It was nice but are we ever going to find out just how he survived/was revived? I don't think simply saying he's alive is enough to satisfy the fan base. The dream sequence with Felicity was pretty terrifying and gruesome for a TV-14 show. I don't think it will be the last time we see these either. I'm really starting to enjoy the new trip of Maseo, Katanna, and Oliver. Both in the flashbacks and present day, there was enough material to keep me engaged all the way through. I think it was probably one of the best flashback weeks we have had all season.

Staying in the family, I thought Thea really shined this week as well. The DJ scenes were unbearable but Thea's character is much more interesting now that there's more to her than some drunk teen. By the way I totally called the DJ being an undercover League of Assassin member. Thea also had some great moments with Malcom. But really Malcom is great in every scene. His "I was looking for some humor" line to Roy was hysterical, and just about how I was feeling about that situation.

Lastly, I hate the fact that Quentin doesn't know about Sara. I cant believe they went as far as changing Laurels voice to hide that, although I did love hearing Caity Lotz' beautiful voice again. It's just disrespectful in my mind. It's really the one thing I just can't stand about this show right now. The man needs to know. But it looks like Oliver comes back next week so that should be very interesting.

+Flashback material surprisingly picking up

+Roy

+Unusual character interactions were fun

+Thea

+Malcom and Diggle's one-liners

-Laurel is an idiot

-Tell Quentin now

So he was just implausibly lucky, then...

Warning: Spoilers
I think I would have actually preferred if Oliver had been revived using the Lazarus pit, rather than simply surviving what has turned out to be a botched execution! This, combined with his escape from the league of assassins search team, makes the whole set-up by Malcolm redundant, including Sara's murder by a doped-up Thea (how much dope would that have actually needed? She can't even figure out that Oliver is Arrow!). So, unless the writers intended for Laurel to become Canary all along, then a fairly major character has been killed off for nothing more than shock value (and it was a pretty effective shock). That said, I like Laurel as Canary, though I guess she'll be learning the whole vigilante thing the hard way, if her experiences this week are anything to go by. It looks like the producers may have decided to stop putting the characters in cliffhangers in the flashbacks too, our 'heroes' never looked like they were in any real danger in the nightclub scene in this episode. Vinnie Jones's character needs some kind of background explanation of why he seems to be bulletproof, yet takes an arrow to the shoulder this week. I'm curious as to how the league of assassins is actually keeping a very close eye on Thea, and presumably Merlyn, while at the same time Ra's Al Ghul managed to be suckered by Merlyn's ploy to shift the blame to Oliver. And now I'm back to that, if Ra's wanted Oliver's dead body that badly, why didn't he kill him properly without kicking him off a cliff?

The fans are always the last to know...
A_Different_Drummer3 March 2015
Has been my experience that when a series starts to decline, the fans are always the last to know. There is no great mystery to that, after all, they are fans, that's their job. Undying loyalty.

Still giving ARROW the benefit of the doubt for a comeback, but this season has been wretched.

Among the ongoing issues:

* insane and chaotic use of flashbacks has become the series' trademark. This is nothing to boast about. The only ones who might possibly be able to keep track of what is happening are Vietnam vets and there are less of those every day

* Vinnie Jones is the new supervillain? R U KIDDING ME? This bespeaks a certain lack of imagination on the part of the writers. Vinnie has been playing soccer thugs so long you can probably find his photo on the Wikipedia entry. But as a worthy successor to the other baddies, I have issues.

* killing Sara off was brave, the kind of thing writers do only when they have an ace up their sleeve. So far I am seeing a bunch of Jokers but no ace. And as for the scene where Laurel's father cannot tell the difference between her and her sister from a small distance (one daughter is Amazonian ... and one is not. Hey. It's easy) -- let's just leave that for the Blooper Hall of Fame

we had our hope in them

Warning: Spoilers
When arrow season 2 was over ,we thought that it would get better but only for hopes to be shattered . Already we had to suffer through 2 seasons just to show Lian Yu island,I mean can't they just let us focus on the present properly instead of just making it go longer and longer . moreover I thought we could see a more terrifying villain in Starling City, just came to square one again and without oliver its even tough to watch them fight , can't call it a fight , More of a fumble. And Laurel's character is so boring just like Thea ,they both were just used to increase the soap in the show .We just expect some less soap and more crispness in the story .Certaiy can say Ray palmer is a sigh of relief ,good to see an interesting character finally ,he keeps the boat floating.

from bad to worse

Warning: Spoilers
So.. we are THINKING about exchanging two hostages in exchange for emptying entire City area of cops - which might as well lead to hundreds of other casualties?!?? This was writer's idea to put into villain's mind?

Also: pacemaker battery typically lasts for ~5-15 years, but in this case "needs to be *recharged* SOON". I will skip the part where pacemaker has GPS, since well.. how else could the plot be progressed?
