This is sort of convoluted in many ways. It holds true to the fact that the children have been transformed and are moving on to some new cosmic dimension. What is a problem is that half the series dwells on earthly things. Since there never was any hope for the left behind, and the overlords are themselves doomed, what is it all worth. There is endless banter and ineffective efforts to make a dent in the plans. But remember that the overlords are merely facilitators. We are evolving every day, and if we don't kill ourselves off (which is most likely), perhaps there will be some sort of transition. We are such a smug species and self destructive to boot. Anyway, this film proves somewhat true to Clarke's vision. But it really isn't even a modest effort to put the book into film form. Different characters, different interactions, and so many unanswered questions. I don't recall the Earth blowing up. It was worth a look but could have been so much more if they had trusted the writer's wonderful work.
