John Brumpton in ‘Measure for Measure.’
One of Australia’s hardest working actors, John Brumpton rarely turns down offers – except when he is asked to work for free.
In the past year he has played a rapist in Stephen Johnson’s Western High Ground, a gunslinger in the second season of Mystery Road, Hugo Weaving’s protector in Paul Ireland’s Measure for Measure and a worried dad in Jamie Helmer and Michael Leonard’s short The Diver, which premieres in competition in Venice.
IMDb lists 95 credits for the actor who made his screen debut in The Flying Doctors in 1989 and took up the profession after working as a surveyor and professional boxer.
“It’s a tough industry and surviving this long is an achievement,” he tells If. “My approach is: ‘Just be yourself.’”

That has inspired the writer-director to make her feature directing debut on Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt), which, unlike Armfield’s film has a happy ending.
Shooting in Sydney started today, starring Marta Dusseldorp, fellow Janet King alumni Julia Billington, Kiwi Rachel House, Zoe Terakes and newcomer Sophie Hawkshaw.
Zanetti adapted the screenplay from her eponymous play which was staged in 2017 at The Depot Theatre in Marrickville, her second feature credit after Jonnie Leahy’s 2014 drama Skip Deep.
Hawkshaw’s Ellie is 18 and struggling to find the courage to ask classmate Abbie (Terakes) to the formal. Luckily her aunt Tara (Billington), a lesbian who died in the 80s,...

The general quality of Aussie TV drama seems a lot better than it was ten years ago. Why?
First off, television.s cyclical. Ten years ago drama was over and reality was king and people were weeping into their cups. And then comedy was dead a while ago and that came back. An old shed on Glebe Island wharf, littered with boat-building machinery and tools, sets the tone for one of the dramatic final scenes of Sbs.s new four-part series, Deep Water, starring Noah Taylor and Yael Stone..
Stone and Taylor play detectives investigating a brutal murder case which appears to be connected to the real-life gay hate crimes that swept through Sydney in the .80s and .90s.
But it was a more recent murder which spurred Blackfella Films. producers Darren Dale and Miranda Dear to get the series moving.
Dear and Dale, coincidentally were both in Potts Point, Sydney, when a particularly violent murder took place.

While the screen industry has plenty to celebrate as Australian films are set to finish the year with around $87 million in B.O. takings, the results show a sizable number of films failed to address fundamental questions.
Namely: Who precisely will watch my film and which cinemas will play it at a time when theatrical release here increasingly is a sure way to lose money?
Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason is delighted with the range of films and documentaries that have resonated with audiences this year.
Mad Max Fury Road, The Dressmaker, Oddball and The Water Diviner all grossed more than $10 million, and Paper Planes just under. Last Cab to Darwin, Blinky Bill: The Movie, That Sugar Film and Holding the Man performed well, although Mason believes Neil Armfield.s gay-themed romance, which grossed $1.2 million, deserved to make double that.
Still, Mason questions the mindset of a sizable section of the screen industry.
Namely: Who precisely will watch my film and which cinemas will play it at a time when theatrical release here increasingly is a sure way to lose money?

The just-concluded 2015 official ratings period has given all three commercial networks something to crow about, despite the continued shrinkage of free-to-air audiences.
New and returning Australian dramas performed strongly for the Seven and Nine Networks while Network Ten had just one fresh drama, the FremantleMedia Australia telemovie Mary: The Making of a Princess.
The Seven Network was No. 1 in primetime for the ninth year running, Seven was the most watched primary channel and 7Two the most popular digital channel.
My Kitchen Rules (2.473 million) was the top-rating regular program and 800 Words (2.103 million) the most successful new series and new drama.
Seven also scored handsomely with Catching Milat (2.55 million). Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door (2.36 million), The X Factor (1.95 million). House Rules (1.86 million) and Winter (1.57 million).
The Nine Network claimed the crown as No. 1 in the key demographics of 25-54, 18-49 and 16-39 for the fourth successive year.

Australian TV drama expenditure has fallen 13 per cent despite total expenditure on drama hitting $837 million - just one per cent down on last year's record high. That's according to the 2014/15 Screen Australia Drama Report which tracks production activity in film, television and online. The Drama Report data is in its 25th year and monitors the health of the industry through measures of hours, spend and sources of finance. TV drama is coming off four years of increased investment, and drama spend and hours are down as broadcasters deal with straightened times and new competitors. Overall, the 2014/15 Australian TV drama slate comprised 517 hours of programs (47 titles), accounting for expenditure in Australia of $299 million. The results were down on last year as the adult TV drama slate fell back from recent record expenditure levels. Expenditure on children.s TV drama increased, although hours decreased. The 2014/15 Australian children.s drama slate comprised 116 hours...

The Australian streaming service, Stan, has started production on a new six-part mini-series based on Greg Mclean's horror franchise Wolf Creek (I think it's definitely a franchise now). In a press release, the service revealed the full cast as well as the plot details. It was also revealed that Greg McLean, who wrote and directed the original films, will also return for this mini-series.
John Jarratt returns as the series baddy along with Lucy Fry (“Vampire Academy”), Deborah Mailman (“Offspring”), Dustin Clare (“Strike Back”), Miranda Tapsell (“Redfern Now”), Richard Cawthorne (“Catching Milat”), Jake Ryan (“Wentworth”), and Jessica Tovey (“Wonderland”).

Director Peter Andrikidis was bowled over by the audience reactions to his romantic comedy Alex & Eve when it screened at the Greek Film Festival at Palace.s Norton Street Leichhardt cinemas on Sunday.
It was the first time he.d seen the film with a paid audience and he marvelled at their rollercoaster of emotions, from laughter to tears to laughter.
After several decades in the business Andrikidis knows not to get carried away - festival patrons don.t always reflect mainstream tastes - but the omens are favourable in the lead up to the opening this Thursday. After all, Oddball shows broad. Aussie comedies can resonate effectively.. .
.I am optimistic but you never know,. says the director, acknowledging that some of what he regarded as his best TV works did not succeed while programs he was less happy with did so.

The tables are turned on serial killer Mick Taylor in the latest iteration of Wolf Creek commissioned by Stan, which starts shooting today at the Adelaide Studios and numerous locations in South Australia.
Vampire Academy.s Lucy Fry plays Eve, an American tourist in the six-part series directed by Tony Tilse and Greg Mclean, scripted by Peter Gawler and Felicity Packard.
John Jarratt.s Mick sets out to murder Eve.s family but she survives, rebuilds her shattered existence and vows revenge.
The series will have a markedly different tone to Mclean.s horror movies, focusing on Eve.s journey. Stan content and product director Nick Forward tells If, .No one wanted to make a 6-hour horror movie. We spent six months with the producers and writers looking for a hook for a televisual drama.
.Mick Taylor is still the grim reaper but this is a thriller about Eve.s journey.

Luke Ford and Anna Samson play a distinctly odd couple at the centre of What Time Is My Heart?, the debut feature from writer-director Romi Trower.
Produced by Tristram Miall, the privately financed film also features Brooke Satchwell, Wade Briggs, Meyne Wyatt, Eddie Baroo and Kaarin Fairfax. Shooting wrapped in suburban Melbourne at the end of last month.
Ford, whose recent credits include Infini, Catching Milat and Deadline Gallipoli, plays Adrian, an It genius with a penchant for fast cars, leather gloves and soppy 1980s pop music, who also happens to have Ocd.
Samson (The Doctor Blake Mysteries, Winners & Losers) is Grace, a street artist with multiple personalities who can only engage in sexual activity through her promiscuous alter ego named G.
The new neighbours find themselves in therapy with the same psychiatrist and share a walk home one evening, beginning a kind of impossible love story with no touching,...

The Belanglo State Forest, scene of Ivan Milat.s grisly serial murders, is such a forbidding place the producers of the Seven Network.s Catching Milat chose to avoid the area.
Only director Peter Andrikidis and DoP Joe Pickering visited the area south of Berrima but they used a drone camera to film the location.
.It.s such an eerie place I didn.t want to go there when they did the tech survey,. Kerrie Mainwaring, who produced the two-part Shine Australia miniseries with Rory Callaghan, tells If.
Instead, the cast and crew shot the crime drama in Terrey Hills, St Ives, Balmain, Glebe, Wattle Grove and Parramatta.
As the title suggests, the focus is not on Ivan Milat but on the marathon investigation into the 1990s backpacker murders that led to his arrest and conviction.
