Whitney Houston will soon posthumously take her place amongst the recent cinematic annals of legendary music stars to receive the biopic treatment. The developing project in question, titled after her 1987 smash hit, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, has just found itself a studio home with Sony’s TriStar pictures, having also secured a director and even a targeted 2022 release window.
I Wanna Dance with Somebody is indeed moving forward with Sony’s TriStar, which has reportedly prevailed in a bidding war against five other studios and streaming platforms, according to Deadline. Now, said studio is wasting little time with the project, having hired director Stella Meghie (The Photograph), who will work off a script by Anthony McCarten, a scribe who brings auspicious music biopic experience, having written the screenplay for 2018’s $900 million-grossing Bohemian Rhapsody, which featured Rami Malek’s Oscar-winning performance as Queen’s Freddie Mercury, and was the arguable...

Stella Meghie’s debut feature film Jean of the Joneses made its world premiere at SXSW in 2016. She was nominated for a Spirit Award and immediately became a director to watch. She went on to direct the adaptation of Nicola Yoon’s Ya novel Everything, Everything starring Amandla Stenberg (friend of the podcast) as well as The Weekend starring Saturday Night Live alum Sasheer Zamata.
Meghie’s next film, a romantic drama titled The Photograph starring Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield, is slated to open on Valentine’s Day. With a trailer that echoes black-led romantic dramas like Love and Basketball and Brown Sugar, it is already garnering anticipation. If there is one common thread woven through Meghie’s films, it is that they put a black woman at the center of a thoughtful and nuanced story that always gives a different perspective of the black experience.

Ask the average film enthusiast to name five black women filmmakers working today, and they will likely struggle to come up with more than a few. Narrow the criteria down to black women filmmakers working at the studio level, and their choices become even fewer, because black women are still vastly underrepresented in the director’s chair, even as industry inclusion initiatives abound. While she has three feature films on her resume (two indies and one studio) in as many years, and two in development (both at major studios), the prolific Stella Meghie remains a relative unknown for her accomplishments as one of very few black women filmmakers working at a consistent rate today.
Among the 814 movies released theatrically in the U.S. in 2018, just five of them were directed by black women filmmakers, and only one (Ava DuVernay’s “A Wrinkle in Time”) came from a studio. In 2017, Meghie...

Kenyan filmmaker Ng’endo Mukii recently lamented what she observed as a shocking scarcity of contemporary African films in top film festival lineups, but the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival is a happy exception. This year, Tiff maintains its history of ensuring that African cinema is well represented among its selections with as many as 15 feature films representing the continent, compared to about six that tell specifically African-American stories. Ahead of Tiff’s September 6 kickoff, here are eight highlights that center on black lives.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Thank Patty Jenkins — and then thank all the other wonder women who lit up this summer at the box office. This summer, studios released only seven films directed by women (that’s including speciality arms, and even a co-directed production), but the massive success of Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” is poised to push the total take of female-directed studio films over $1 billion.
Nothing sings quite like “a billion dollars” in Hollywood, but what’s even more heartening is the variety of films in this small group.

“Everything, Everything” director Stella Meghie, who made her debut with the Canadian production “Jean of the Joneses,” isn’t just being modest when she says she didn’t expect to direct a studio film. The numbers tell us as much: Most female filmmakers struggle to get a second film off the ground, and the number of black female filmmakers in the studio system is vanishingly small.
In fact, Meghie is just one of 16 female filmmakers to have a studio-backed film hitting theaters in 2017 (that includes studio speciality divisions). However, it’s not Meghie who got lucky; it’s MGM and Warner Bros., since she might be the only person who could have made this movie.

Perhaps there’s nothing worse than a film with a campy premise that takes itself too seriously. Everything, Everything takes it title from a spoiler alert its lead character Maddy Whittier (Amandla Stenberg) leaves on her blog as she reviews Flowers for Algernon, another story about a chronically ill character (“Love is Everything. Everything”). This is a dull, illogical, yet sincere and well-meaning drama. Sadly, its core audience should demand more from their entertainment.
The sophomore effort from director Stella Meghie — whose debut feature, the delightful family comedy Jean of the Joneses, enjoyed a healthy life on the festival circuit last year and a well-deserved Spirit Award nomination — Everything, Everything crashes by taking itself way too seriously as it chronicles the young love of homebound Maddy and the boy next door Olly Bright (Nick Robinson). From Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures comes the romantic drama Everything, Everything, directed by Stella Meghie and based on the bestselling book of the same name by Nicola Yoon.
What if you couldn’t touch anything in the outside world? Never breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun warm your face…or kiss the boy next door? Everything, Everything tells the unlikely love story of Maddy, a smart, curious and imaginative 18-year-old who due to an illness cannot leave the protection of the hermetically sealed environment within her house, and Olly, the boy next door who won’t let that stop them.
Maddy is desperate to experience the much more stimulating outside world, and the promise of her first romance. Gazing through windows and talking only through texts, she and Olly form a deep bond that leads them to risk everything to be together…even if it means losing everything.

Robert Eggers took home the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay Saturday. The writer and director of “The Witch,” Eggers’ debut feature is a beautifully shot horror about a Puritan family’s brush with witches told entirely in old English. Set in New England decades before the Salem witch trials of 1692, “The Witch” was lauded for its daring and inventive new take on the classic genre.
Originally a designer for experimental and classical theater in New York City, Eggers transitioned to film as a designer and by directing shorts. In his acceptance speech, Eggers said: “I want to thank my wife, who had to be around for four years while I was obsessed with witches… Also thanks to the Puritans, who wrote a lot of stuff down. Otherwise I couldn’t have written this.”

Last year’s Me Before You had to be the number one ‘chick flick’ (sorry, romantic drama) of the year despite the controversy of its subject. Warner Bros. are looking to up the romance stakes in Everything, Everything and lo and behold they have chosen Valentine’s Day to release its trailer… how cliché!
Everything, Everything sees The Hunger Games very own Amandla Stenberg as Maddy, a teenage girl kept in the confines of her own home because of an illness she has which means she cannot go outside. Along comes the boy next door in the form of Nick Robinson (Jurassic World) as Olly and without even officially meeting falls for his charming texts – well that’s what we can gather from the trailer.

This morning the Canadian Screen Awards announced their 2017 nominations, recognizing the best of last year's Canadian films.
The awards are given out by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. This year's nominees boast a diverse line up of films that tell stories not just in English and French, but also Mandarin, Atikamekw and Inuktiut.
The most high-profile of the bunch would have to be Xavier Dolan's It's Only the End of the World, which is a likely contender at the Oscars this year in the Best Foreign Language Film category. It made the shortlist of nine films that will be considered at the Oscars, which also includes Germany's Toni Erdmann and Chile's Neruda.

With the first major announcement from the Independent Spirit Awards, we're officially into awards season!
It's the best time of year if you're a film fanatic, like us, as major awards bodies will start revealing their nominations, leading up to the coveted Academy Awards. While the Indie Spirits obviously highlight independent film, they're often a good indicator for whats to come at the Oscars, with their acting categories usually lining up with the Academy's choices.
Today was a big day if your movie was called Moonlight, American Honey or Manchester by the Sea, as Moonlight and Manchester picked up five nominations each, and American Honey lead with six nominations. Moonlight also was awarded the Robert Altman Award, which honours director Barry Jenkins,...

It’s usually the matriarch in her pajamas who doesn’t want to greet a tall stranger in her hallway late at night — but when that mom is Sherri Shepherd, the opposite might be true. In Stella Meghie’s winning “Jean of the Joneses,” the former “View” co-host plays the frosty uptown mother of a slacker novelist named Jean and is forced to take in the girl while she grapples with her demons. The film was widely praised at its SXSW Film Festival debut in March, and stars Taylour Paige in the title role, with memorable support from Shepherd, Gloria Reuben,...

The comedian/actress was ordered by a court to pay support for a child she had through a surrogate with her ex-husband in April 2015. She asked the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania to review her case, but was denied in March. Though...
