Rita Ora wasn't always sure that her relationship with Taika Waititi would work, though all the signs were there from the start. "We clicked straight away," Ora recalled in a July 10 interview with The Line of Best Fit, referencing when they first met. "We just really connected on our families and our work ethic. It was like there was no one else at the party, and then it was like, 'Oh my gosh, the sun's coming up. What's going on?'" Still, the pair didn't get together until years later. "We remained really good friends, but I had butterflies - it was a surprise, but I felt comfortable. Safe," she continued.
Eventually, though, they found their way to one another, and today, they seem to work well creatively in addition to romantically. In July, Waititi directed Ora's music video for her song "Don't Think Twice," which Ora said "is about...

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees comedian, actor, writer, director and future King of England, Mike Birbiglia, drop by the podbooth to have an extended, but very funny, natter with Chris Hewitt about Birbiglia's one-man show, The Old Man And The Pool, which is on now at the Wyndham's Theatre in London. They talk about that, about Mike's attempts to crack Ireland, about his movie Don't Think Twice (from 2016), and more. Then Chris is joined on Zoom by Brian Duffield, the writer/director of the very good alien/home invasion thriller, No One Will Save You, which hits Disney+ this week.
And either side of those, Chris is joined in the studio by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for an episode in which they further develop a plan to save cinema, try heroically to stretch the movie news section out to a decent length despite the absence of any movie news,...

So it’s almost hard to imagine that her last album, Phoenix, was released in 2018. Ora’s name has remained on everyone’s lips—she’s made sure of it.

The very premise of “Mrs. Davis” all but encouraged the Peacock show’s creative team to embrace their pop culture influences. Co-created by Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof, “Mrs. Davis” is about the world’s most powerful artificial intelligence algorithm and a nun named Simone (Betty Gilpin), who the computer programs tasks with its destruction by sending her on a quest to find the Holy Grail. “Algorithms love cliches,” Wiley (Jake McDorman), Simone’s ex – who happens to lead a group of male resistance fighters like he’s “Fight Club” figure Tyler Durden – says at one point.
“It’s such a pastiche,” “Mrs. Davis” cinematographer Joe Anderson tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “The show deals with cliches – like when you do a Google search, the very first topic that comes up. Some of the writing toys with that idea. So we kind of leaned into some of these kind of obvious references,...

Daniel Radcliffe and longtime girlfriend Erin Darke are expecting their first child together.
A representative for the Harry Potter actor told The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday that Darke is pregnant. The pair met on the set of the 2013 film Kill Your Darlings, in which Radcliffe portrayed famed poet Allen Ginsberg, while Darke played a woman who shares a romantic encounter with him.
The 33-year-old actor, who most recently portrayed comedic musician “Weird Al” Yankovic in last year’s feature Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, does not tend to share much about his personal life and is not on social media.
During a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Radcliffe offered his take on why his private life doesn’t usually dominate media headlines. “I think in the years since I’ve been sober, I just don’t do anything interesting enough,” he reasoned. “As an actor, I just want to live...

Bob Dylan has been a successful musician for decades, picking up critical acclaim, awards, and even a Nobel Prize along the way. His songwriting has also inspired many other musicians, including those who rose to prominence at the same time he did. Here are five musicians who took inspiration from Dylan.

To the public, Bob Dylan is an enigma, but the musicians who know him well say he has a solid sense of humor. Dylan takes his music seriously, but he also brings humor on stage and into the recording studio. He also likes to mess with the artists working with him. Here are three artists Dylan has purposely tried to throw off while playing together and their reactions.

Guitarist Bucky Baxter joined Dylan on tour in the 1990s. Just before playing a song, Dylan abruptly told Baxter to switch instruments.
“One night around that time, at Hammersmith, he was about to go into [his 1963 classic] ‘Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright,’” Baxter told GQ. “He said, ‘Hey, Bucky! Play mandolin on this.’ I am not really a mandolin player; I could only play in certain keys.

Pets? Men? Who can tell the difference? The success of a silly premise always depends on the ability of the performers to commit to said premise with a serious conviction. In the case of Unleashed, the deadpan humor looks like it's delivered perfectly by Kate Micucci, Justin Chatwin, Sean Astin and Steve Howey. Micucci has shown her range of comic talents in The Little Hours and Don't Think Twice while Chatwin and Howey are familiar (to me, at least) from TV's Shameless, and Sean Astin, is, well Sean Astin, whose performances I always enjoy. Here's the synopsis: Emma, a brilliant but awkward app designer, moves to San Francisco after a massive betrayal by her boyfriend with only her beloved pets, an adorable cat and an...

The original Dirty Dancing is a favorite movie to women of all ages. The magic of the film was created by the music, the spark between Jennifer Grey and the late Patrick Swayze, and of course, the dancing. It was a movie we watched when we were young, fantasizing about growing up and falling in love, and we watch it now that we're grown and remember our first loves and those magic summers of our youth.
Remaking a movie so iconic is a big risk, so I watched this ABC remake with a grain of salt. I knew it wouldn't be the Dirty Dancing of my youth, but I wanted to see what it had to offer. Here's the lowdown.
The cast: Abigail Breslin (Signs, Little Miss Sunshine, Zombieland) as Baby Houseman was a perfect fit. She's cute and youthful. She played the naive and inexperienced, yet intelligent Baby really well.

He details a suicide attempt at age 21, in which he tried to get hit by a truck but wound up crashing his car on someone's lawn. "I think I overestimated my ability to handle discussing it onstage,...

Just one of these months we'd love a slight surprise and for Netflix to throw a bone at the movie fans they built their empire on. I'm considering cancelling my streaming service and going DVD only -- the exact opposite of what the rest of the world does but I need my movies and, Fact, they just aren't providing them any more. Pickings gets slimmer by the month. Consider that this month they've literally added only two titles made before 2000s, one Bollywood picture and Forrest Gump. That is insane and, well, lame. They don't care about movie fans now that they have popular TV shows of their own to produce.
Nevertheless we'll do a screengrab roulette of a few titles. First image that comes up gets posted, no cheating...
Look at these lips. Those are kissable lips."

"She opens a doorway between hell, so she can devour the innocent. I think she's coming for me next..." An international trailer has debuted for a horror thriller titled Don't Knock Twice. Not to be confused with the indie comedy about an improv group, Don't Think Twice (which we highly recommend seeing), this film is a creepy horror thriller about a demonic witch. The cast includes Katee Sackhoff, Lucy Boynton, Nick Moran, Javier Botet and Jordan Bolger. This looks dark and moody and scary, most definitely, but it also doesn't look that original or interesting. Just more creepiness lurking in the dark. Give it a look anyway. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Caradog W. James' Don't Knock Twice, from YouTube (via Tmb): When a mother, desperate to reconnect with the daughter she abandoned, becomes embroiled in the urban legend of a demonic witch, she must go further...

You gotta feel for rock legend Patti Smith -- she stepped up to accept Bob Dylan's Nobel Prize, but choked while singing his classic, "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall." Patti was in Stockholm for the ceremony Dylan refused to attend -- so good on her for filling in for him. Dylan became the first musician to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, and maybe Patti's stumble is really just a testament to how moving his words can be.

Greetings from Chris, lovely readers! This Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for our faithful readers, our feisty team, and our relentlessly kind and passionate leader Nathaniel. In my estimation, this has been a great enough year to just be thankful for such a bevy of riches - but here's a few of the things earning my gratitude:
... the many unsung ensembles hosting their own feasts but especially Don't Think Twice, Little Men, and Love and Friendship.
... André Holland smoking in Moonlight. It's the hottest sex scene of the year and it's between camera and actor. May we all find someone that looks at us the way that the camera looks at Holland...

"What a shmuck." Sony Pictures Classics has unveiled the first trailer for a film titled The Comedian, from Oscar-winning director Taylor Hackford, starring Robert De Niro as an aging stand-up comic. De Niro plays Jackie Burke, who returns to the stage to perform comedy after a long run on a TV sitcom. But things aren't exactly the same as they were in the old days. The full cast includes Danny DeVito, Patti LuPone, Edie Falco, Leslie Mann, Harvey Keitel, with an appearance by Billy Crystal. The film just premiered at AFI Fest and got slammed by critics, with some very harsh feedback making it sound like this is worth skipping. From the looks of it with this trailer, it might be better to recommend Don't Think Twice instead. Here's the first official trailer for Taylor Hackford's The Comedian, originally from EW.com: An aging comic icon, Jackie, has seen better days.

Awards season is a brutal one in Hollywoodland. Plenty of worthy — but perhaps “smaller” — films get left behind as other, larger, starrier features push to the front to collect their accolades. But filmmaker and comedian Mike Birbiglia is hopeful that his latest film, “Don’t Think Twice,” doesn’t suffer the same kind of fate as other exciting offerings that never quite push past the gold-plated finish line.

If you were a peculiar orphan with supernatural powers could you imagine anyone more perfect than Eva Green to be your guardian? Tim Burton may not be the director he used to be in quality or bankablity but he was smart to latch on to Eva Green as his latest pale skinned raven haired muse. She ran so many circles around everything else that was happening in Dark Shadows (2012) it's a miracle that it was her character and not the film that cracked apart and crumbled. Her reviews are strong again for this new fantasy film.

Movie Stars still matter. As long as they're real movie stars and not just "leads". Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks both became famous in the 1980s and they continue to be two of the most reliable leading men thirty-ish years after their first hits. Zach Galifianakis’ online talk show “Between Two Ferns” features the host and a celebrity guest trading barbs and awkward exchanges each episode. While the majority of the guests have been fellow actors such as Jon Hamm, Bradley Cooper, or Sean Penn, the show garnered a higher profile when Galifianakis interviewed President Barack Obama in 2014 to encourage citizens to go visit Healthcare.gov. But for the latest “Between Two Ferns,” Galifianakis sits down with Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to discuss all the “important” issues. Watch the episode below.

Occasioned by the recent release of “Don’t Think Twice,” Mike Birbiglia took to reddit for an Ama yesterday. The biggest reveal is that he’ll (hopefully) be filming a performance from his “Thank God for Jokes” tour for Netflix, though the comedian/actor/filmmaker had plenty else to say as well:
On the interplay between sadness and comedy: “I’m just trying to dig into the sadness and hopefully find some comedy so that hopefully you can too. I mean, that’s the goal. I’m doing my best.”
On people pronouncing his name wrong: “People keep telling me that local NPR ads for Don’T Think Twice keep saying ‘Mike Ber-Beehl-ia’s movie…’ etc. I think some names are never meant to be learned. Sincerely, Mike Birbigilbug”

Last month Mike Birbiglia’s comedy “Don’t Think Twice” was released in theaters. The dramedy starring Birbiglia, Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci and a slew of other comedians centers around a member of a popular New York City improv troupe who gets a huge break and suddenly the rest of his best friends in the group start to realize that not everyone is going to make it.
Now, the cast teamed up with Funny or Die to create a hilarious video where they all turn against each other after they’ve been infected with a nasty case of the Viral Video Virus.

Suicide Squad has been rated PG-13 for "sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language," which is an extremely generalized reading of what we actually see on screen. Personally, I would have added "gratuitous sequences of gun violence that make shooting look fun, with a tendency to desensitize viewers of all ages" somewhere in the mix. But that's just me. As chronicled in the 2006 documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, the Motion Picture Association of American (MPAA)'s ratings board is a shadowy group that rates films based on the opinions of a group of members about whom very little is known. One of the main critiques of the board is that it tends to be much harsher on depictions of sex than it is on depictions of violence, a bizarre standard that has been demonstrated many times over in the form of big-budget studio...

Mike Birbiglia, the comedian and filmmaker whose latest big-screen comedy Don't Think Twice was released in limited theaters a couple weeks back, just went on a delicious Twitter tirade against the MPAA, the film rating organization that remains an easy but deserving target. Needless to say, he is absolutely right about this. Suicide Squad has machine gun killings and bombings and got a PG-13 rating. @Dontthinkmovie gets an R because adults smoke pot. Confusing? — Mike Birbiglia (@birbigs) August 3, 2016 As I wrote earlier this afternoon, the very un-kid-friendly Suicide Squad indeed features dozens of deaths by automatic weapon and other assorted explosive devices, and Birbiglia is 100% righteous in calling out the MPAA for giving his film an R-rating when the Warner Bros. superhero blockbuster skated by with a PG-13, despite featuring glorified wall-to-wall violence. It is an unconscionable stance for a ratings board that claims to have the best interests of...

Along with Parks and Recreation, one of the shows I miss the most that's ended over the past few years is Comedy Central's Key & Peele. The show was absolutely brilliant (though it dropped a bit in quality during its last season), and being able to tune in every week and be able to get these guys' unique outlook of the world was something I looked forward to in a big way.
It's been nearly a year since their show went off the air, and in the meantime, the title duo reunited for Keanu, Jordan Peele has gone off to make a horror movie, and Keegan-Michael Key plays a big role in a drama about improv comedy called Don't Think Twice. But in a great new interview with Uproxx, Key says that not only is is possible that Key & Peele comes back one day, but that it's actually probable:
I think it’s absolutely possible.

Justin Lin’s “Star Trek Beyond,” the third installment in the J.J. Abrams “Star Trek” series, boosted the summer of 2106 back into positive territory.
That doesn’t make “Beyond” a big moneymaker for Paramount. It falls into the middle ground of big-budget films of late. It’s not a domestic bomb like “Warcraft” or “Alice Through the Looking Glass,” nor is it a too-expensive minor dud like “Ghostbusters” and “The Legend of Tarzan.”
“Beyond” likely will end up, like earlier summer recoupers “X-Men: Apocalypse” and “Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” in profit. Yet the returns on these franchise tentpoles compared to cost pales versus the massive numbers seen for a slew of animated hits and far less costly real blockbusters “Deadpool” and “The Jungle Book.”
“Star Trek Beyond” came in 16% ($11 million) lower than its preceding franchise entry. That’s an improvement over “X-Men: Apocalypse,” which fell 26% from its last edition.

Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice” (The Film Arcade) is the latest mid-summer hit, joining the recent turnaround in art house fortunes. Following his template for “Sleepwalk With Me,” Birbiglia & Co. boosted box office via frequent appearances at their New York cinema. The already strong film surged to a huge initial $90,000 number with many sold out shows on multiple screens.
Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” (Lionsgate) continued to improve on the director’s recent performance, and could end up besting two other recent strong openers. “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street) and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard) continue to have strong expansions; both could end up over $10 million as well.
Asian wide-audience commercial releases are performing well in domestic play, with entries from South Korea, India, the Philippines along with China continuing to deliver strong niche results.

Topped by Star Trek Beyond, five films grossed over $20 million this weekend for the first time since May 24, 2015 and for only the sixth time ever*. In the five previous instances $45.6 million was the largest gross for the #1 film when Monsters University topped the weekend back on June 30, 2013, which separates this weekend from the rest thanks to the estimated $59.6 million Beyond delivered in its debut performance. Also opening this weekend, and topping the $20 million threshold, was the impressive performance from New Line and Warner's Lights Out along with the rather disappointing opening for Ice Age: Collision Course. Overall, the top twelve grossed over $183 million, up 29.4% when compared to the same weekend last year. The estimated $59.6 million opening for Star Trek Beyond is enough to take #1 for the weekend, but that's a 15% drop compared to the $70.1 million opening for Star Trek Into Darkness, and that's not including the $13.5 million it carried into...

Ira Glass thinks it’s crazy for anyone to make a film. Ever.
But when his “This American Life” contributor Mike Birbiglia wanted to follow their 2012 collaboration “Sleepwalk with Me” with a film about an improv comedy troupe, Glass went along for another ride.
“It’s very hard for anybody who tries to make things for a living,” Glass said in our video interview at SXSW the morning after the film’s rousing premiere. “It’s hard to make anything that’s good… It struck me even more this time how many things have to go right, in every scene, every sound cue, it’s almost like every minute of the film is another 15 things that you can screw up.”
