There are lots of names for black birds.
cricket302 February 2024
The kind of winged creature featured in the animated series known as Heckle and Dr. Jekyll are labeled as magpies by some, grackles by others. Edgar Allan Poe wrote a poem about such a flier, known to him as THE RAVEN. But perhaps the most common name for these corn thieves is crows. This episode has a segment called VAIN CROW. Even though G. Stein famously observed "A crow is a crow is a crow," would this picture stand up under any other name? A vain grackle might sound like a bird with a mouth full of gravel, which would hardly constitute an improvement. Vain Raven appears to denote a wind direction devise belonging atop someone's barn. Furthermore, Vain Magpie smacks of a sort of oxymoron: Who would not be extremely self-conscious, with a moniker such as "magpie"?

Space....Man

This episode begins with a flying saucer arriving and depositing metal munching mice in huge quantities. When the boys approach the spaceship, it is revealed that Gidney and Cloyd, two moon men are bringing the mice to earth. In collateral business we get Aesop's story of the Vain Crow (who wants to be a peacock) and Peabody visits Stephen Decatur.

The most constructive part of this show . . .

, , , is titled MR. KNOW IT ALL: HOW TO BE A HOBO or TEN EASY STEPS TO A BUM CAREER. Diverging from the well-trodden path of William A. Well-Man when he directed HEROES FOR SALE and WILD BOYS OF THE ROAD, as well as related films including THE GRAPES OF WRATH and SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, Bullwinkle J. Moose confines his bumming around to "riding the rails." From maintaining a precarious perch clinging to the bottom of a box car to facing the perils of fellow itinerants in a "hobo jungle," America's favorite moose packs loads of Real Life survival tips into a space of 90 seconds. By placing Bullwinkle on a Lionel train set for the final shot, this series' producers encourage America's Youth to experience the Thrills of the Open Road for themselves.

People born between "The Greatest Generation" . . .
oscaralbert2 February 2024
, , , aka, The Great Depression Kids or The World War Two Enlisted Men, became parents to the Baby B-o-o-m cohort. Sandwiched in between these two notable groups were the younger siblings of The Greatest Generation. Some call this batch of the population the Do-Nothings; others refer to it as the Beatnik Bunch. Until 2020, these Easy Riders never had spawned a U. S. President. In this Bullwinkle Show episode, Aesop and Son's VAIN CROW sounds just like the current Oval Office Occupant. This demented raven spouts the same sort of incomprehensible lingo that seemed dated the day it originated. Beatniks, with their clunky fashion sense, whiny music and distinctively garish films ruined most of the movies of the 1960's. VAIN CROW does a good job of lambasting them.

"He's stiffer than a boiled shirt . . . "

. . . Bullwinkle J. Moose remarks concerning the stationary appearance of Boris Bad-Enough during THE SPACE RAT or OF MICE AND MENACE episode of the "Monstrous Metal-Munching Moon Mice Mystery." However, it turns out that Boris has not been "smooched" by the pair of moon men he has subcontracted to transport herds of moon mice to Planet Earth. In reality, when the nefarious Boris is out and about, he's always equipped with Bad-Enough placards he can disperse to make it LOOK like he's suffering in the throes of helpless paralysis, when in Reality he's making good on a getaway. This is one more piece of evidence that The Bullwinkle Show--original version--is being used as the template for America's 2024 Election Cycle.
