Jessica Biel to star in ‘The Good Daughter’
Emmy nominee Jessica Biel (The Sinner) is confirmed to star in and executive produce The Good Daughter, a limited series set up at Peacock. The drama is based on Karin Slaughter’s bestseller, with Slaughter attached to write and executive produce.
“The Good Daughter is a suspenseful crime drama where sisters Charlotte (Biel) and Samantha Quinn have spent the last twenty-eight years trying to piece together the lives that were fractured by a single night of violence,” reads Peacock’s synopsis. “When another attack splinters the small town of Pikeville, Charlotte is the first witness on the scene. Now a lawyer like her father, she’s forced to confront her own demons as the case twists through one shocking revelation after another. In the end, both she and Samantha find themselves wondering if the price of being the good daughter was worth it after all.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

‘Spinal Tap 2’: Rob Reiner, Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer to Return for Sequel
Ready to rock?
Castle Rock Entertainment, Rob Reiner’s company that recently re-launched its film division after going somewhat dormant, is back and with a big new project to shop around the Cannes Film Festival: “Spinal Tap 2,” a sequel to 1984’s immortal comedy classic “This Is Spinal Tap.” And what’s more – everybody is back, including Reiner (as director and in the film as Marty Dibergi), Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest, Castle Rock announced in a statement.
“When it was announced that Spinal Tap would reunite for one final concert, Marty DeBergi saw this as a chance to make things right with the band who viewed ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ as a hatchet job. So he left his position as visiting adjunct teacher’s assistant at the Ed Wood School of Cinematic Arts in pursuit of film history,” said Reiner in a statement.

Peter J. Nygard and Louis Bacon were two of the world’s richest men, who also happened to be neighbors in a posh corner of the Bahamas. A bitter feud between the billionaire hedge fund operator and the Canadian fashion mogul, one that initally stemmed from a noise complaint, dominated headlines, and eventually led to Nygard’s arrest and indictment for racketeering and sex trafficking.
It’s a stranger-than-fiction saga that seems ripe for the big screen treatment. Well, no surprise — in a highly competitive situation, Matthew George’s Savvy Media Holdings has acquired the rights to two books on the battling one-percenters. The company has purchased the underlying material of Dick Russell’s forthcoming book “Bacon Vs. Nygard: Sex-Trafficking, Political Corruption, Murder-for-Hire, and the Takedown,” as well as Melissa Cronin’s “Predator King: Peter Nygard’s Dark Life of Rape, Drugs, and Blackmail.” The latter was published in April last year by Skyhorse Publishing.

Netflix seems to have found its niche. In the films department, the streamer has invested heavily of late in prestige content from some of Hollywood’s most respected minds, resulting in awards-friendly (if not award-winning) output like Marriage Story, The Irishman and The Two Popes.
The TV department has different priorities. Bingeable true crime documentaries and soapy dramas fill the site’s television slate, driving clicks and social media conversation often with markedly less investment. Think Locke & Key, Riverdale, You.
Dare Me is the quintessential new addition to that latter group. A ten-part series which first aired in the States on the USA Network late last year, joining Netflix internationally March 20, the show is a claustrophobic and occasionally bloody look at the always-competitive dynamic of high school teens. Cutthroat is the key word. Spoken in ominous voiceover, the show’s first line – “There’s something dangerous about the boredom of...

Over the course of their five-decade bond, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young have joined together for a number of tours. Some, like Crosby, Stills & Nash’s 1982 Daylight Again trek during David Crosby’s drug addiction, were nerve-wracking. Others, like the quartet’s 1974 reunion tour, were huge-scale and overwhelming. But Csny’s 2006 Freedom of Speech tour – the foursome’s last road work to date – presented a new set of challenges.
That year, Neil Young released Living with War, an album of scathing songs about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and George W. Bush.

The Syfy Channel has unleashed another wicked cool trailer for Joe and Anthony Russo’s upcoming series Deadly Class. The series looks like it’s its going to be an action-packed blast!
The series is set at a school for assassins where a bunch of young men and women learn the deadly art of killing people. There are also a lot of strict rules to follow at this school, but like this trailer suggests, rules are meant to be broken.
The series is based on the Image Comics property created by Rick Remender and Wes Craig. I’m just happy that the Russo Bros. picked it up and developed it because with those guys leading the charge, you know it’s going to be great!
This is the synopsis that was released for Deadly Class:

For about 35 years now, Rob Reiner has been a director. For the first decade and a half, he was among the best in the business. Recently? Not so much. That being said, we’re focusing on the good today. Since he’s releasing a new film in the next few days, it feels apt to look at his best work. So, that’s what I’m doing. A full ranking of all of his movies is on the way, with special attention paid to his top features. I would argue that half of his output is good to very good, with five or six legitimately great works on his resume. This week, Reiner puts out his 20th feature, this time another political offering. It’s Shock and Awe, his treatise on the lies of the Bush Administration, namely in terms of going to war with Iraq. As per IMDb:...

It’s about that time of year when leaving your house and braving the heat is only bearable if you’re rushing from one air-conditioned space to another. Although it’s hard to think about any sort of activity, these four events are designed to keep you cool (in more ways than one) and completely inspired this week. Uncover the queer side of L.A.’s past, present, and future art scene.Billed as a “month-long arts festival celebrating L.A. queer history in the streets that wrote it,” Dirty Looks: On Location (now through July 31) is celebrating Lgbtq culture alongside films inspired by it and in places where it actually happened. By resurrecting old haunts and venerated landmarks to showcase everything from drop-in art installations to musical performances and more, it’s a chance to experience an integral part of what’s made the Los Angeles art scene unlike any other.

Welcome to July! Now that we’ve full on entered the second half of the year, the films will again start to take two very distinct shapes. On one end of the spectrum will be the summer blockbusters, which have already been going on in earnest, while on the other side will be the smaller movies that are potentially looking to pick up some awards buzz. In fact, July usually is a perfect example of that. We have a Marvel movie hitting screens and some action flicks, along with at least one title that wants to try and contend for Oscars. The films overall are pretty solid, which I can vouch for, having seen a fair amount of them. Read on for some recommendations… Here now are what I think are the ten best bets for July: 10. Shock and Awe – Rob Reiner gives his take on a Spotlight style film here.
