A pleasant surprise!
cabijista22 August 2016
For those few of us who have followed Van Damme's post 90's career, there hasn't been a lot to talk about in a very positive light. Nearly all of his films were low-budget direct-to-video releases that were high on mediocre action and more high still on mediocre acting. Then came the welcome surprise "JCVD" - a Belgian production that parodied Van Damme as himself caught up in a real life bank robbery. The film was a strange mix of action, drama and comedy but it worked and Van Damme was praised for his performance even going so far as to be nominated for several best actor awards (yes, you read that correctly). Unfortunately for him, this did not lead to better things and he soon found himself back to making formulaic low-budget action flicks.

A few years later he got another chance to return to the limelight when he appeared in "The Expendables 2" - by far the biggest budget film he had done in a very long time (possibly ever). Yet despite Van Damme's turn as the villain being arguably the best performance in the film, it too failed to reignite his career and back to the realms of mediocrity he went.

Here with "Jean-Claude Van Johnson" my first thought was that this was going to be the American sitcom version of "JCVD" and essentially, it is. Van Damme is once again playing a parody of himself, but here it is done more for comedic effect than in "JCVD". Thankfully, the script is quite witty, being closer in vibe to a show like "Community" rather than a slap-stick action-film parody like "Hot Shots" and most - if not all - of the jokes land on the nose. The action too is well executed (though it is not the focal point of the show) and the plot is fast-paced and entertaining. But really the whole show rests upon Van Damme's performance and for the most part, it is spot on. The breadth of emotions that he undergoes in this 30-minute pilot is a fair sight larger than you might expect and he sells it well.

Is it perfect... no. Van Damme's love interest looks about half his age (though she plays the role well), the aforementioned fast-pacing could actually be toned-down a touch to let things breathe a bit more organically, and just occasionally some of Van Damme's delivery is a little "off". However, this is a pilot and you have to expect a few kinks in the armour the first time round. The important thing is the ingredients all work and there is plenty of room for this to grow should it be picked up for a season.

Succinctly put, this is the best thing Van Damme has worked on in a long time. It might too very well be his last shot at escaping the direct-to-video action world. So please if you're a Van Damme fan check this out (and leave a favourable review on Amazon while you're at it as they tally these to decide on whether or not to pick up the show) and if you're a Van Damme hater check this out too - he just might surprise you.

pilot episode - possible spoiler
paradyse120 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
this show has a LOT of potential. it is witty and well written. it doesn't force you to like characters. very simple plot line. that being said, it does need things. 1) more time. there isn't enough time to make the episode complete. 2) rachid does an okay job but i feel like its forcing her to be something she's not 3) more development of main characters and their interactions. I'm betting the assistant will be a better foil for jcvd than the love interest (i think the love interest should be unrequited) 4) if its going to be this short then it needs less action more stealth - there are several famous celebrities who were spies and more suave with comedy would bring this together a little nicer plus with all the new hardware/spy ware there should be something a bit more up to date than the equipment shown here

This is amazing

I think I saw a Jean-Claude Van Damme movie once, although I'm not positive. So I came into this without much in the way of preconceptions. And I loved it. It is absolutely hilarious.

In this pilot for a series I dearly hope makes it, Van Damme plays himself, an aging retired actor whose home is a shrine to his action career and to his dogs. He also happens to be a retired spy, but he decides to go back to both acting and spying in pursuit of an ex girlfriend.

Van Damme is a good sport in playing an over-the-hill himself. There are amusing scenes like him working out in preparation for his return, desperately struggling to find a weight he can still press. There are also just general goofy gags like a hipster restaurant that serves unboiled ramen.

Great writing, great direction, and Van Damme is funny and admirably willing to mock himself.

Everyone should watch this.

New favorite show. This is not what you think it is.

Going into Jean-Claude Van Johnson I was extremely worried and critical. I am a huge Jean- Claude Van Damme fan but I'm honest enough to say he's made some real stinkers. I knew he could be really funny and from Expendables 2 and JCVD, I knew he has some serious acting chops. But a comedy series starring him? I was so worried it was going to be a Seth Rogen/Adam Sandler-esque comedy with fart jokes and bad puns. This is nothing like that, the writing is brilliant. I was blown away by the spot-on parody of 80s/90s action movies and of the current PC culture and current Hollywood movies. The writing is so smart… Thats what surprised me the most. Secondly, Van Damme is hilarious. He plays a perfect parody of himself, everything he says/does reminds me of the '80s Van Damme. He is absolutely hilarious and also they gave him some awesome fight scenes that are better than any of his direct to video action movies and showcase his vintage moves. Lastly, the show is masterfully shot, this could easily be a high caliber HBO series. Great cinematography, which can be taken for granted. Also, have to say something about the girl who plays his love interest, Vanessa. Man was she funny, she also stole the show. You can tell she must have watched a lot of action movies back in the day or something because she plays her role masterfully and hilariously. "He spinning back heel kicked his way into my heart." was probably my favorite line, she was fantastic. Everything about this show was fantastic, if you're a JCVD fan or a hater, either way you will love this show, trust me. Absolutely blown away, 10-10 rating. I pray this gets picked up as a series.

This has to be the most hilarious comeback ever.
george-alexandru-dragoi26 August 2016
Unfortunately I don't write movie reviews very often, If i like a movie, I watch it till the end, if I don't - I stop it at the point where it gets really boring and move to something else. However, in this case, I was really disappointed when the pilot episode ended all of a sudden because I honestly want to see some more! This is the best JCVD so far ! I've watched all of his nineties movies at that time, but comparing with the latest block buster action movies available these days, they are just outdated. So if you still want to do what you do best, like JCVD, these days, you just have to have fun at the old stunts :) Simply brilliant, I couldn't stop laughing from start till finish, this could be the best comedy series we've seen in a long time. It's action packed, funny, silly- in a very good way, so you can just relax, feel good and have fun which is all you need sometimes after a crazy day of week. Please Amazon, go ahead with a full season !

The Best Thing Van Damme Has Ever Done
srdone-9445219 August 2016
Proving himself a far better actor than any of his action star contemporaries Jean Claude Van Damme headlines this Amazon pilot. If there is any justice it will get a full series and provide him with the career rennaissance he so richly deserves. Without giving too much away our hero plays a fictionalised version of himself who specalises in secret missions in dangerous locations which he carries out while sneaking away from the movie set. Funny and poignant in equal measure this is accessible to anyone although some of the throwaway lines will go over the heads of those who aren't familiar with JCVD's back catalogue. Regardless of any previous familiarity with or feelings for the star this is worth a try. This could be the most impressive comeback since Lazarus.

Jean-Claude Van Damme in a goofy spy comedy
pjthomas40428 August 2016
I couldn't think of a better idea if I tried, unless maybe you through Steven Segal into the mix as well. This show looks like it could be truly amazing as long as it is done right.

JVCD showed that Van Damme has a sense of humor, and this new show really proves it. Van Damme recognizes that he's getting old and can't do the old stunts like he used to, so he's shifting gears into more serious material, rather than his normal martial arts clichéd movies.

I can only hope that he continues to make entertaining content like this, and I really, really hope the show stays around.

Anyway, yeah, this is one of the most interesting, goofy, and enjoyable things I've ever seen from him. He's kind of pulling a Jackie Chan a little bit and branching off into movies and TV that aren't just purely partial arts content. I think this and JVCD might actually bring him back into the spotlight as long as he can keep up the quality of those two.

Entertaining
Gordon-1127 August 2016
This film tells the story of an action film star who also assumes the identity of a secret agent. He asks for a secret anti-narcotics mission, with filming as the cover.

I applaud Jean-Claude van Damme for making fun of himself for this film. The first line he says is that he used to be famous. Then the weight lifting scene funny because he makes fun of himself repeatedly. That takes guts to do!

The story is light and entertaining. Even though the runtime is only thirty minutes, the film doesn't feel too short. It is the right length for this story. I like the scene where the people in the secret warehouse all gather around to read those pieces of paper. Jokes in here work!

Better than I thought

Warning: Spoilers
"Jean-Claude Van Johnson" is a half-hour short film from this year that actually aired about a week ago on Amazon and it is part of their stack of new live action pilot episodes that may (or may not) result in a series depending on how much the audiences liked it. And looking at the number of ratings here and the high rating especially, this one probably has a good shot. It was made by director Peter Atencio and writer Dave Callaham (both fairly successful with past projects) and the first name in the title already tells you who is the star here, namely actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, who essentially plays himself with the addition that his acting career is not all there is to him. he also investigates as a one-man army against criminals, a drug cartel in this case. I was not really too impressed by the action and more dramatic and romance-related scenes and moments,, but the comedy was pretty well-done here from start to finish. Foster may not be my favorite choice as female co-lead to Van Damme, but I'll take it. It was interesting to see the actor playing Rico in "Hannah Montana" in a completely different role here. As a whole, I enjoyed this half hour and I might check it out for more episodes in case it gets picked up. Thumbs up from me, I was positively surprised as I never cared much about JVCD, but he is pretty decent here.

JCVD in a series where he plays himself: Good idea!
kaykoller17 September 2016
"TORTURE" says the guy that rates a movie like "DEADPOOL" with one star (Eddie_Weinbauer). This pilot is anything but torture. Combining JCVD and this type series makes sense, i actually don't understand why we would need to vote(on amazon) for this series. It should get a full season without any competition screwing with it's chance to be on TV.

If you want to know more on the why, read all the other reviews (except for that 1 hater i mentioned at the beginning). They're pretty much spot on.

I gave this a 10/10 because some haters might give it a 1/10. But to be fair if you're not a JCVD fan it's a 7/10. And if you are it's a 8/10.

I'm just writing a review here because i'm bored today. I've wrote 1 review before because usually i read other peoples reviews and usually there are a couple reviews i totally agree with, so imo there's no reason to repeat what has already been said.

Pilot
bobcobb3014 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was not sure what to make of this show and after watching the pilot I am still not sure what to make of it. It is like a hybrid of modern comedies poking fun at celebrities by having them appear as themselves in exaggerated fashion (Episodes, Entourage, Don't Trust the B etc.) and the 80's/90's action movies we all wish would make a comeback.

JCVD isn't quite equipped for the comedic aspect of this show, and yet there is something strangely captivating about the program's over the top nature. I will definitely give the rest of the series a go.

Funny and engaging, cool and fresh
createSoftware21 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent acting from JCVD, and the pilot sets up a good back story. I enjoyed the storyline with good dialog, though i think they tried to pack too much into the pilot but whatever was lost in making it feel a bit too fast paced, i hope will be gained in the future if this show makes it to a series.

Feels very original with JCVG parodying himself as an undercover man of mystery (aka mercenary/industrial spy/ black ops agent)

The back story is good and i would like to see more action but the comedy is just right - mixes well with the plot.

Some bits felt very unrealistic (in a bad way) but i put that down to the rushed timeline of the pilot as mentioned above - thus i am expecting much better if the show makes a series

Pilot
Prismark1017 January 2024
Jean-Claude Van Johnson is a high concept lampooning of the Muscles from Brussels.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is the action star who has retired. Not the Nicolas Cage type of retirement. Bored living in his mansion.

He decides to come back into action. Not as a movie star but as his secret agent alter ego after he bumps into his former lover Vanessa (Kat Foster.)

JCVD contacts his handler Jane (Phylicia Rashad) and begs to be sent on his next black ops mission. The same mission Vanessa is on.

As a knowing parody JCVD has enough comedic skills to make it work. The script in the pilot though is not that funny or sharp.

Torture
Eddie_weinbauer27 August 2016
It's scary when Even Van dame, is depended on fake reviewers . At the moment,I am maybe the only one, who is not payed to say good things about this

I loved a lot of Van Dammes older stuff. Double impact Unisol1 kick boxer, even No retreat no surrender. But this, this is a turkey, from a man who is waay passed his heydays.

Van Damme plays him self as an actor,/secret agent disguised as an actor.

Throws in a lot of references to his old movies, while making fun of himself as actor.Which doesn't really help move the story forward, nor make it any more funny or interesting. At one point he even sound like DR.Evil

Just makes it all more corny. And desperate.

Kinda like a comedian that tries to convince everyone he is funny, but nobody laughs at his jokes.

The dialogue is cringe worthy, the acting is wooden(even for him). Not to mention, everyone look completely uninspired by the script, and bored.

Go back to the old 90 min action flicks. You can't do worse than this

If you're a fan of Jean Claude, and have been waiting for his comeback (not withstanding The Expendables, where he didn't get the recognition he deserved), here it is!

He is at his best, with a witty script, and it definitely keeps you on your toes as far as plenty of stuff going on.

There's a lot packed into this, and the leading lady looks like his daughter, but who cares!

Jean Claude pokes fun at himself and adds dimension to this - I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I'd definitely want to see him a bit more often on our TV screens after this.

Great show totally worth your time!
goodassbadass28 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This show is very well written and totally hilarious. I think JC has a great ability to perform comedy. Anytime a big action star can crossover into comedy always makes for a good movie or TV show. One of my favorite things is when actors play themselves deadpan. The plot for the show, of him having been a secret agent while filming his previous movies is fun and allows for him to make fun of himself. The rest of the cast does a great job as well, even if they only have a few lines to speak. You can't go wrong with Phylicia Rashad (Claire Huxtable) playing a movie agent/Amanda Waller type. Jean-Claude Van dam has still got it and proves it 100% with the show. Completely worth your time! I hope they make at least a good number of episodes to make it feel like a complete one off series.

This pilot episode is HILARIOUS!!

I don't normally take the time to write reviews but I am trying to contribute to the positive buzz this show may receive so that it hopefully gets picked up by Amazon and we get to see a whole season at least.

Super funny, this show knows what it is and is not trying to be something else. Doesn't take itself seriously and is truly hilarious.

This is basically the JCVD movie, made into a TV show, but instead of a drama it is almost slapstick comedy.

Watch it!!

Will there be more of Jean-Claude Van Johnson? There Van Damme well better be!
FrankDamage4 December 2016
Though I grew up watching those Saturday morning Chinese martial arts imports as a kid and subsequently developed an affinity for those kind of action films, I never really got "on the boat" with Van Damme or his movies.

My father on the other hand "loved" the guy. So, when Christmas 2010 rolled around and I still hadn't found a gift for my dad, I bit the bullet and "suffered" through some of those (what I thought to be) way too serious to be taken seriously films he did through the late 80s and 90s in the hopes of finding one that we could re-watch together. I have to say some weren't half bad, but since he'd already seen most of them I looked for the most contemporary (at that time) movie Van Damme had done and stumbled upon JCVD (2008). This was when I really sat up and took notice.

For those who enjoyed this and have not seen JCVD (2008) I implore you to do so immediately (the subtitled version is best to my liking, but if dubbed is more your style, that is out there as well).

Much like JCVD, Jean-Claude Van Johnson carries with it the self deprecating and self aware exaggeration into Van Damme's actual life (aging action star playing an aged action star, etc), but with far more humor and a very obviously fictitious plot line that will surely offer more opportunities for action sequences in the series than the aforementioned film did.

The kind of nonsensical, physically brutal tedium and rigmarole that is portrayed as being a staple to the background creation process of his film career, which we saw a glimpse of in the 2008 film, appears to be something that will be a staple of future episodes if (and the GODS know it Damme well better!) the series continues.

I honestly believe that the creators of this series polled fans of the previously mentioned film to find the highlights and created what amounts to being one of the most entertaining pilots and hopefully continued series I've seen in a very, very long time.

Though Van Damme continues to perform in the kind of films that made him a star, I truly think his comedic work not only opens him up to whole other fan base, but is likely have some degree of therapeutic value to the star himself.

If as they say, "laughter is the best medicine" prepare yourself for an overdose when watching this series' pilot.

Could make a great series
jellyneckr28 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Jean-Claude Van Johnson has one of the best pilots I've ever seen. Pilots are almost always a little bit clunky in terms of satisfying the need of setting up the story, characters, and tone of a perspective series. Jean-Claude Van Johnson has none of that clunkiness. The best part of Jean-Claude Van Johnson is that it doesn't feel much like a show at all, but rather a nice-looking, extremely well done short film. A show with this particular premise--Jean-Claude Van Damme as a version of himself that is secretly Black Ops--could have felt like a terrible spoof, or a really bad fan film that just happens to have JCVD as the star. But, given the talent involved, and one of the strongest performances Van Damme has ever delivered, this instead feels like something really unique and special. It's satirizing Van Damme's career to a large degree, although it's not mean-spirited or overly joke-heavy.

Just like one would expect from anything starring Van Damme, there are some great action sequences, ones that are well shot and extremely entertaining to watch. The fight scenes here aren't long, and they are mainly here to serve story purposes, but they should be satisfying for fans of the actor. For something that obviously doesn't have the budget of something that would be on network or cable, Jean-Claude Van Johnson is visually impressive all around. The cinematography is great, the production values look better than almost any television show on at the moment, and every single scene is edited with a very strong sense of purpose. There's no awkward filler to be found. Every scene, even the straight-up comedy scenes, build a certain amount of tension in terms of whats going to happen next.

As much as I loved Jean-Claude Van Johnson as a solid pilot, all 30 minutes aren't perfect, especially some of the dramatic relationship material which is extremely clichéd. In fact, the relationship drama seems like something that would be the worst subplot of a lesser Jean-Claude Van Damme movie. However, it's easy to forgive those moments simply because of how fresh, funny, smart, and exciting the whole production is a a whole. Even for people that aren't Van Damme fans, Jean-Claude Van Johnson is definitely worth watching. 8/10

Absurdly brilliant self satire comedy......
s327616911 September 2016
Cast in the right context self satire is a great vehicle for comedy.

Jean Claude Van Johnson is an absurdly brilliant example of comedic self satire. Nineteen nineties action star Jean Claude Van Damme takes the mickey out of middle age, the absence of "top shelf" acting roles and his own "star" status.

What surprised me is that Van Damme really does have scope as an actor. His exhausted, wearied and somehow ironic "acceptance" of the world we all face with increasing age is convincing. As is his mid- life "crisis" ignited by an encounter with an old flame.

Lots of absurd fun ensues with our hero being revealed as a genuine "over the hill" secret agent. Its wonderfully silly stuff and Van Damme pulls no punches in making fun of the genre that made him a household name back in the day.

I truly hope this episode heralds the start of a series. Its fresh, original, honest and at times rather witty. Eight out of ten from me.

JCVD at his best!
dave_cath21 September 2016
This could really happen???....

So. JCVD plays a third rate action star, as cover for his black-ops assignments....Genius!!

As one of the action heroes from the 80s'. He has stared in a few of my faves, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, AWOL and Timecop in particular.

Not seen much of him of late , apart from the Coors light ad campaign.

He deserves a bit of a break here i feel. Not taking himself too seriously, but this fun, witty action packed pilot had me hooked from the start.

I hope it gets the views it requires. Id be series linking it for sure!

Please make a full series of this!!

Warning: Spoilers
I love how this is twisted on the audience. It is a great come back and very entertaining. I really hope this goes well, he is a wonderful actor to have switched gears at his age and with his earlier action packed movies!! I want more :)It left me surprised and I laughed a lot. I think this is a great way to entertain people for him. When I first saw the piolt, I thought oh wow he is sinking, but I was unexpectedly wrong. Maybe this could be a great time to revist the actor Jean Claude Van Damme Jhonson as a struggling actor taking missions as his first job. Still action packed, but with a twist that I think a lot of people will like. It's genuine and perfect in my opinion. I really hope people give it a chance to get off the ground!

There are some excellent reviews below which I would only echo. Only thing I would add is that the pilot impacted on me enough that this is my first ever review.... anywhere.

I smiled, chuckled, smirked and generally (and genuinely) really enjoyed the show. I'll be spreading the word. Good game, well played JCVD :)

Surprisingly very good and funny !
AliensReservoir31 August 2016
Warning: Spoilers
JCVD as a comic/funny actor, i would have never thought about it, but in this particular little movie it works well, no ... very well! Some funny part are really good playing with the past film made by JCVD for example when he is in the factory, and mistakenly his makeup look like a one who already works inside, everyone saying to him Hi Philippe .. Hi Philippe .. Hi Philippe .. Hi Philippe .. and for sure he face the "real" Philippe, who are you? i am you from the future to warn you .... That was a very good one, i am just laughing thinking about this one.

So yes it is a very good start, i enjoyed from the beginning in his house ( a must to see how narcissistic it was, so excellent, and it's very hard to joke about ourselves. Good job from JCVD too I hope it will become a series, i got so much fun to watch this episode
