Warren's Dream
bobcobb3017 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
With the producers preparing Season 3 as the final year, it doesn't look like they prepared for the eventual renewal. This led to a really odd reboot in the first episode. Some good moments, wisely they focused on Warren and Murphy, but the show has more than lost a bit of its touch. They didn't capitalize on the comedic potential of a dystopian utopian society either.

Great plot but geography could be more realistic

I really like the plot of Z Nation. It is always very entertaining and original. I also like that the characters move around the country and don't just stay in one region like in other shows like Walking Dead.

One issue that I am concerned with, which is particularly relevant to this particular episode (season 4 episode 1) is the complete lack of effort that was put into creating a believable Hawaiian setting. It was established in earlier seasons that Zona is located on Molokai Island in Hawaii. Having previously lived on Molokai and presently living on a different Hawaiian island I was really looking forward to seeing Z Nation episodes take place in my state. I waited for multiple seasons for this and I must say that it was a major let down. Season 4 episode 1 supposedly takes place on Molokai, but anyone with eyes can tell that it does not. It is probably somewhere in the Midwest, perhaps Ohio. It is definitely not Hawaii much less Molokai. This is obvious because the trees, layout, architecture, demographics, etc. all do not match those of Hawaii. These are very obvious details that would not be difficult to address, even for someone who knew very little about the state. Additionally, there is a law in Molokai that prohibits buildings from being over two stories and as a former resident I can attest that I have in fact never seen any taller than two and it is a small enough island that I would have seen or heard of any that were taller. This means that the old three story mansion in the episode would definitely not have been allowed on Molokai.

My point is that while the story is great and shows significant effort and planning it would be ideal if a similar degree of care went into making the set believable based on the stated location. I wouldn't have minded if they just said that Zona was somewhere else or didn't mention its location, but stringing me along for years on the false pretense that the show would take place in my home state and then not having it there is quite annoying and takes away from my opinion of the show. I had gotten people I know excited about the idea of seeing their island on a zombie show and now I'll have to let them know that it was actually all a scam.
