When Apple TV+ went live four years ago on November 1, 2019, it was a streaming platform with just six titles. The new streamer’s marquee push was the Jennifer Aniston-Reese Witherspoon melodrama The Morning Show, which is currently airing its third season. Also available at launch was the revisionist space race historical drama For All Mankind (Season 4 debuts November 10), the post-apocalyptic series See starring Jason Mamoa, the whimsical period piece Dickinson starring Hailee Steinfeld, and the charming yet self-explanatory Snoopy in Space.
In 2022, Apple TV+ became the first streaming platform to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards with Coda. But when it launched, it didn’t have a single scripted movie on offer. The only film it boasted was the nature documentary The Elephant Queen. And that was it. No library of licensed titles or big special events. Just half a dozen originals.

Exclusive: With Hollywood scripted grinding to a halt, Apple TV+ is doubling down on natural history series.
The streamer has greenlit a duo of six-part docs titled Born to be Wild and Endangered Planet, Deadline can reveal, both of which carry urgent messages around the need to help save rare species on Earth.
Born to be Wild will follow endangered animals including a Savanna elephant calf, cheetahs and a moon bear cub, as they are brought up by humans with a view to returning to their homelands once they are ready.
Endangered Planet, meanwhile, will use cutting-edge technology to uncover insights into protecting precious species including the Gobi bear, Malayan tiger, Javan rhino, Caucasian leopard, Cross River gorilla and the North Atlantic right whale.
Apple TV+ has been keen on natural history since its inception and both series are being produced by UK indie Offspring Films, which also made Tom Hiddleston...

“Causeway,” a new drama starring Jennifer Lawrence as a soldier adjusting to life after returning home to New Orleans, will premiere on Apple TV+ on Nov. 4. The streaming service also announced that “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues,” a documentary about one of the founding fathers of jazz, will hit Apple TV+ on Oct. 28.
Both films are world premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the company is screening five features, the largest number of Apple Originals to debut at a single film festival. The Canada-bound Apple lineup also includes “Sidney,” a documentary about Oscar-winning actor and barrier-breaking star Sidney Poitier that is produced by Oprah Winfrey and directed by Reginald Hudlin; “Raymond & Ray,” which features Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke as half-brothers; and “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” with Zac Efron and Russel Crowe in a new dramedy from “Green Book” director Peter Farrelly.

How many DIY filmmakers can shoot footage so arresting in composition and content that it could fit seamlessly in a Steven Spielberg movie? Underwater documentarian Valerie Taylor and her husband Ron did just that. The Australian filmmakers captured the footage in “Jaws” of a great white shark mauling the diving cage that supposedly held Richard Dreyfus just moments before, its powerful body thrashing against its metal bars with unrelenting destructive force. The message to the world was clear: not even steel could stop a great white on the hunt.
That’s a message Valerie Taylor, now 85, has been trying to dispel ever since. It’s a regret Australian documentarian Sally Aitken captures in her new film about Taylor’s life, “Playing with Sharks,” .
An achievement in editing together superlative archive footage, “Playing with Sharks” owes its beauty almost entirely to Valerie and Ron, who was usually the one behind the...

Apple TV+ has given a straight-to-series order to Gutsy Women, an event docuseries hosted and executive produced by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton, inspired by their best-selling The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience.
The docuseries will feature a diverse cast of trailblazing women, according to Apple. In it, the former first lady, U.S Senator and Secretary of State, and her daughter set out to answer the question: what exactly does it take to be a Gutsy Woman?
Published by Simon and Schuster, the book features portraits of women such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Mary Ritter Beard, Harriet Tubman, Edith Windsor and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, among others.
The series will be produced for Apple by HiddenLight Productions, the new company founded by Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton and Sam Branson.
Hillary and Chelsea Clinton will executive produce the docuseries with Johnny Webb and Roma Khanna.

Apple TV Plus has scored worldwide distribution rights to “The Velvet Underground,” a new documentary from Oscar-nominated director Todd Haynes.
Haynes tackles the hugely influential 1960s avant-garde group, at one time managed by Andy Warhol and considered the “house band” of his iconic workspace The Factory.
Haynes’ film aims to prove how the group became a cultural touchstone representing a range of contradictions: timely yet timeless; literary yet realistic; rooted in high art and street culture. The film will feature a trove of never-before-seen performances, studio recordings, Warhol movies, and other experimental art that underscores what founding member John Cale called the band’s creative ethos: “how to be elegant and how to be brutal.”
The group, which counted Lou Reed among its ranks, was largely considered a commercial flop during its run, but has proven hugely formative in the music landscape in the decades that followed.

Apple TV+ acquired its second music documentary in “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry,” Apple announced on Monday, and the film will debut early next year.
The documentary will center on the 18-year-old musician in the time after she released “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?,” her breakout debut album, in March 2019. It is scheduled to hit theaters and Apple TV+ sometime in February 2021. “Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry,” directed by R.J. Cutler, comes from from Apple Original Films, in association with Interscope Films, Darkroom, This Machine and Lighthouse Management & Media.
Eilish’s debut record was an immediate critical and commercial success and significantly raised her international profile; she won four Grammys in 2019, including Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Album of the Year.

The Primetime Emmys take place on September 20 and air live coast-to-coast on ABC. But the majority of awards are handed out at the five Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies that take place in the week leading up to TV’s biggest night. The Creative Arts trophies will be awarded at five events on: September 14 (reality and nonfiction; Sept. 15 (variety); Sept. 16; Sept. 17 and Sept. 19 (mix). The first four of these will stream live on Emmys.com while the last will air on Fxx.
Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has forced TV productions, film shoots and entertainment events to shut down all year to slow the spread of the easily transmitted disease, all of this year’s Emmy ceremonies will be held virtually. While Jimmy Kimmel emcees just one show — the Emmys next Sunday — Best Reality Host nominee Nicole Byer (“Nailed It”) has been tapped to preside over all five of the Creative Arts awards.

Most of these winners will be announced at the Creative Arts Emmys in two separate virtual ceremonies on Sept. 12 and 13, a week before the primetime telecast on Sept. 20. Two new streaming services made impressive debuts in the 2020 Emmy race. Disney+ and Apple TV+ shattered the expectations of naysayers, who worried that the streamers wouldn’t have the snob appeal or reach to register with Emmy voters. The nominations total for each of these freshmen streaming networks bested the previous first year nominations record by streaming services.
Thanks in large part to the massive success of the first ever live action series set in the “Star Wars” universe, Disney+ just had the best first year nomination tally ever for a streaming service. They snagged a total of nineteen nominations, fifteen of which came from the cultural phenomenon “The Mandalorian.” The saga of a lone gunslinger in a galaxy far far away went viral thanks to Baby Yoda memes, but won over TV fans thanks to its western and samurai influenced presentation. Apple TV+ came out of the gate strong, reaping 18 Emmy nominations in its first year of eligibility, including eight for its marquee drama “The Morning Show.” The starry series the inner workings of morning talk show earned five acting bids: leads Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell, supporting players Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass and guest star Martin Short, plus directing for Mimi Leder.
“The Morning Show” did not receive a Drama Series nomination despite odds being in its favor before nominations, but it’s hardly a bad morning for the series overall. Aniston won the SAG Award earlier this year and is the frontrunner for the Drama Actress Emmy. Carell and Crudup also earned SAG attention and could very well be considered favorites in Drama Actor and Drama Supporting Actor. Outside of acting and directing, “The Morning Show” was also nominated below the line for its main titles and production design.

Ever since Netflix introduced its first-ever awards contender “House of Cards” in 2013, streaming services have emerged as major Emmy players alongside cable and broadcast TV. Now Netflix just scored the most nominations, while the newest streaming platforms to compete – Disney +, Apple TV+ and Quibi – make notable entries to the Emmy derby.

As film and TV continue to converge, we weren’t surprised to see a number of past Oscar contenders showing up in the roster of 2020 Emmy nominees. While the 17 listed below have not taken home an Academy Award, they could very well be putting an Emmy on their mantle in September.

Baby Yoda is now an Emmy contender. So are several new streaming platforms.
Disney Plus, Apple TV Plus and Quibi all earned nominations from the Television Academy, with Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” making a surprise appearance on the best drama series list and Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston getting nods in the lead acting categories for Apple TV Plus’ “The Morning Show.”
“The Mandalorian” nabbed a total of 15 Emmy nominations, in categories including sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, voice-over and stunt coordination, making it the most nominated program from a direct-to-consumer service that debuted in the last year. The voice-over nod went to “Star Wars” fan-favorite Taika Waititi for his performance as Ig-11, the bounty hunter droid-turned Baby Yoda protector. Waititi wasn’t the only “Mandalorian” performer to receive a nomination, as Giancarlo Esposito broke into the guest actor in a drama category for playing the villainous, dark saber-wielding Moff Gideon.

Tuesday’s Emmy nominations featured a bonanza of recognition for streaming and digital platforms, with 269 collective nods, up 42% from last year’s tally of 190.
The nominations announcement capped a period of campaigning unlike any other in memory, especially for these non-traditional contenders. Even before Covid-19 upended everything starting in March, the Emmy field was altered by the presence of several new streaming hopefuls. Five new services have hit the market since November, with four of them — Apple TV+, Quibi, HBO Max and Disney+ — were in the awards hunt to varying degrees. For over two decades, Alex Heffes has been a rock solid composer, turning in work that crosses genres, be it Academy Award winning fare like The Last King of Scotland or Inside Job, as well as his own Golden Globe nominated score for Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. With Heffes in contention for some Emmy Award love for the Apple TV+ documentary The Elephant Queen, it was a pleasure to hop on the phone a few days ago with him about talk a bit about music, the doc, and what it’s like to try and compose during isolation and the Covid-19 quarantine. Below you will find my chat with Alex Heffes. It’s a pretty interesting one, especially in terms of hearing about how he looks to find the sounds that compliment the visuals of his projects. In particular with The Elephant Queen, his score really resonates, allowing you...

Coronavirus stay-at-home orders dramatically impacted television viewing habits, driving up consumption of just about every genre of programming, including documentary. The resulting huge audience numbers and media attention generated by Tiger King and The Last Dance could give those nonfiction series a leg-up as Emmy voters prepare to mark their nomination ballots.
Tiger King, the seven-part series on “murder, mayhem and madness” in the eccentric world of big cat breeders and private zoo operators, dropped on Netflix March 20, just as lockdown orders were being imposed across much of the U.S. Director Eric Goode is the first to say people moored in their homes, TV remote in hand, helped turn the series into a cultural phenomenon.
“I do think we all must assume that that’s part of it,” Goode states. “For sure.”

Exclusive: In a real shocker, the WWII battleship drama Greyhound that Tom Hanks wrote and stars in has abruptly changed course and will berth at Apple. Originally on the Sony Pictures theatrical calendar for Father’s Day weekend, the film instead will become the biggest feature film commitment made by Apple to premiere on Apple TV+. It is the latest in a growing indication that Apple is making its move, and becoming as aggressive as any streamer or studio in auctions for the acquisition of films and TV projects.
Hanks will test the waters in putting out one of his star-vehicle films direct to a streamer for the first time with a premiere in more than 100 countries, and it is all because of the coronavirus pandemic and how it has wrecked studio theatrical release calendars this year. Meryl Streep will lead a cast lending their voices to an animated short film that will premiere on Apple TV+ on April 17 in celebration of Earth Day. “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth,” based on the 2017 Time magazine Best Book of the Year by Oliver Jeffers, will be narrated by Streep and feature the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Chris O’Dowd, and Ruth Negga.

A bright spot in the middle of this dark month, Alison Reid’s unabashedly sincere documentary offers gentle comfort even when it brushes up against tough subjects. “The Woman Who Loves Giraffes” is Dr. Anne Innis Dagg, though a more accurate — if admittedly impractical — title might be “The Woman Who Once Loved Giraffes, Then Lost Them, and Finally Found Them Again.”
The movie traces the length of her remarkable journey beginning in 1936, when her mother took her to the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. Just three years old, she gazed at a group of giraffes — what she now calls “a symphony of perfection” — and knew that she wanted to dedicate her life to them.
And so she did, at least at first. Dagg made her way to Africa for the rigorous study of wild animals in their native habitat years before Jane Goodall or Dian Fossey or many other peers who earned greater renown.

It’s next to impossible for a documentary score to be Oscar-nominated alongside the dozens of fictional narratives entered each year. But it did happen, just once: In 1975, composer Gerald Fried was nominated for his music for “Birds Do It, Bees Do It,” a documentary on the mating habits of animals.
Fried, now 91, perhaps best-known for his Emmy-winning score for “Roots,” recalls his surprise at the nomination. He believes that his fresh use of the relatively new synthesizer sounds, along with more traditional orchestra, was probably the reason his colleagues noticed and approved.
No doc score before or since has been nominated. Yet music for documentaries is being taken more seriously than ever before, going by the number of award-season screenings and even live-to-picture concert performances.

More films from streaming services are in the awards race this year than ever, prompting some handwringing among awards season voters — most notably AMPAS board governor Steven Spielberg — about whether Svod films with limited theatrical runs are leading to the demise of theaters and deserving of the same consideration as traditional releases.

Apple has made the last minute decision to cancel the world premiere of “The Banker,” which was set to close out AFI Fest on Thursday, as the company reportedly investigates charges made by a family member of the late Bernard Garrett Sr., the man played by Anthony Mackie in the film.
An AFI Fest spokesperson confirmed that the film has been pulled from the Los Angeles festival’s slate and replaced with Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.” That movie, though widely lauded, has already been released in theaters.
“We support Apple’s decision to postpone the premiere of ‘The Banker.” Fortunately our partners at Netflix have generously allowed us to screen the critically acclaimed ‘Marriage Story’ to close out AFI Fest tomorrow at the Tcl Chinese Theater,” the spokesperson said.

Apple has cancelled the planned premiere of its film “The Banker” as the closing night film of the AFI Fest this Thursday over new “concerns” the company now has regarding the film.
“We purchased ‘The Banker’ earlier this year as we were moved by the film’s entertaining and educational story about social change and financial literacy,” an Apple representative told TheWrap in a statement. “Last week some concerns surrounding the film were brought to our attention. We, along with the filmmakers, need some time to look into these matters and determine the best next steps. In light of this, we are no longer premiering ‘The Banker’ at AFI Fest.”
The drama starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson is based on the true story of two real estate investors and businessmen, Bernard Garrett (Mackie) and Joe Morris (Jackson), who managed to buy banks and homes in all-white neighborhoods and...

Two years ago, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 159 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others, on December 16.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume, with more to come. Each voter is assigned a list of about 22-23 films to screen, so they all get covered. But it’s a burden to see them all, so the ones with the most attention move to the top of the much-watch list.
Give the advantage to box-office hits that were made available earlier in the year such as Neon’s “The Biggest Little Farm” and “Apollo 11,” as well as high-profile titles from HBO (“Diego Maradona” and “The Apollo”), Netflix,...
