A24’s growing range of books, including its much-loved screenplay collection, will soon be available in physical stores around the world for the first time following a deal with independent publisher Mack.
The publishing partnership — the first of its kind between a studio and a publishing house — will see A24’s existing line of film, TV, and creator-driven books sold in bookstores globally from September, distributed via Mack’s network in the U.S., Europe and Asia. They were previously only available to order via A24’s online shop.
A24 launched its own publishing division in 2019, a collection it said at the time would “celebrate the singular vision and unbridled artistry of noted writer-directors, showcasing how they saw their films through from script to screen.” The first three releases were hardback screenplays of “Moonlight,” “The Witch” and “Ex Machina,” books that also featured production sketches, concept art and guest-written essays inspired by the films’ themes.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi's Evil Does Not Exist was announced as the winner of the main competition at the BFI London Film Festival.
The latest film from the Drive My Car director centres on a camping development at a village. The jury, headed by Mexican filmmaker Amat Escalante, said: “Subtle, cinematic and underscored by fully realised performances, Hamaguchi’s assured drama supersedes the sum of its parts. It is both a lyrical portrait of family and community, and a nuanced consideration of the ethics of land development.
The Sutherland award for best first feature went to Mika Gustafson for Paradise Is Burning, which follows three sisters fending for themselves after being left home alone. The Grierson Award for best documentary was taken home by Bye Bye Tiberias, directed by Lina Soualem, which explores the filmmaker's relationship with her actor mum Hiam Abbas.

Sofia Coppola took a seat at New York’s Bookmarc on Sunday to sign copies of her first book, Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023. The event inspired hundreds to hit the sidewalk and queue up for hours in a line that snaked through the West Village streets while fans waited for their chance to meet the filmmaker and snag an autograph. “It was so nice to meet so many young kids that were all dressed up and excited,” Coppola told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday night, moments after she arrived to a different kind of scene at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont.
There were plenty of youthful attendees, albeit more famous, a frenzy for Archive and everyone was fashionably suited courtesy of Chanel, which hosted the event to celebrate Coppola’s new tome and toast their longtime ambassador, collaborator and friend. But the only line that formed was the one...

Major record labels including Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Capitol have filed a copyright lawsuit against the Internet Archive and its founder Brewster Kahle over the “Great 78 Project,” an initiative aimed to preserve and provide free access to pre-1972 musical works from artists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Louis Armstrong.
In the suit filed Friday (August 11th), the labels claim that the project — which Internet Archive describes as a hub for “the preservation, research and discovery of 78rpm records” — violates copyright laws, and argues that by “transferring copies of those files to members of the public, Internet Archive has reproduced and distributed without authorization Plaintiffs’ protected sound recordings.”
The group of plaintiffs also includes Concord Bicycle Assets, Cmgi Recorded Music Assets, and Arista Music, who all own full or partial copyrights to some of the music in the collection, and allege the recordings were illegally distributed to...

Exclusive: James Wan’s Atomic Monster has teamed with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios on Concrete Jungle, an urban nature docuseries.
Based on an original idea from Wan and Ingrid Bisu, Concrete Jungle is described as “not your typical natural history show”. It follows the secret lives of urban animals – food foraging and hunting, dating and mating habits, internal clashes and turf wars with other species — and these aren’t the traditional, majestic animals from exotic, picturesque places like the African savanna or South Asian jungles.
Per the description, it “stars grungy, hardened, and clever critters abiding in the gritty Concrete Jungles of America, from bobcats to crows to coyotes to squirrels and more. Taking a darker, and also comedic perspective, the series will track the unexpected lives of these local animals as they live below us, above us, in our backyards and even in our walls,...

When it comes to changes in the television landscape, 2022 has been rough. Almost every streaming service or major cable network seemed to have some kind of major loss or merger. The result was a whole lot of cost-cutting, which unfortunately meant that some beloved shows got the axe, many before their time. The CW ended many of its superhero shows as the network goes through a total re-brand, Warner Bros. Discovery's merger led them to cut hundreds of millions of dollars worth of content, and Netflix lost 50 billion in value overnight back in January, leading to a year of heavy cancellations. It seemed like every time we turned around, something else was getting cut, and it's been devastating for fans.
Some of the shows we lost only had a single, audacious season before getting cut short, while others have been around for years. Some, like the divisive and ridiculously expensive "Westworld,...

TV academy voters are faced with a daunting task when they fill out their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballot in that they have to consider 171 shows for Best Drama Series. This is up by 38 from last year. As has been the case since 2017, members do not have to winnow their choices down to a set amount and are instead being told to “vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”
Last year’s champ, “The Crown,” will not return to seek another victory, as no new episodes of the Netflix series have aired since its fourth season finale in November 2020. Of its seven 2021 rivals, three – “The Boys,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and “The Mandalorian” – also did not return in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2022. Another two – “Lovecraft Country” and “Pose” – ended their runs in October 2020 and June 2021, respectively.

The dinosaurs are ready to stomp into China with a June 10 date confirmed for Universal’s Jurassic World Dominion. This will be in step with the North American release — a rarity of late — after international rollout begins a few days prior. Universal confirmed the China release date on its official Weibo account with a video from stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt. Check out some new posters below.
The Jurassic movies are immensely popular in China with the 2015 reboot grossing 229M at historic rates, and 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom doing 261M (also at historic rates).
The dating of Dominion could be seen as a sign of hope for a market where the box office has been severely impacted recently. "Archive 81" is no longer alive at Netflix. The streaming service confirmed that the show has been canceled after only a single season. It's a cancelation that has folks wondering about the massive black box of Netflix's metrics, given that the public-facing side of those metrics pointed to a very successful series.

According to Deadline, the streamer has opted not to continue the series, which is based on the popular podcast of the same name. Archive 81 will not be back on Netflix for another season.
According to Deadline, the streaming service has canceled the horror drama after just one season.
The series drew decent reviews and charted on both the Nielsen Streaming Chart and Netflix's own top 10.
Archive 81 followed archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie), who takes a job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994.
Reconstructing the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi), he is drawn into her investigation of a dangerous cult at the Visser apartment building.
As the season unfolds across these two timelines, Dan slowly finds himself obsessed with uncovering what happened to Melody.
When the two characters form a mysterious connection, Dan becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.

The cancellation is somewhat surprising because Archive 81 did break into Nielsen and Netflix’s weekly Top 10 ratings for originals, and it also briefly shot to No. 1 on Netflix in the U.S. before being dethroned by the return of Ozark. With the streamer laser-focused on analyzing viewing versus cost in its renewal decisions, the number of eyeballs Archive 81 drew possibly did not meet the threshold Netflix had set for the series based on its budget.

Season 3 of Ozark premiered in March 2020, so anticipation had been building for the fresh batch of episodes. Netflix hasn’t yet confirmed when the second part of Season 4 will premiere.
Evenly split between male and female viewers, according to Nielsen, the show also hits a broad range of ages. About 30% of viewership was in the 35-49-year-old bracket, and 30% was 50-64s.
The previous week’s No. 1 title, Encanto on Disney+, managed to slightly increase its audience, recording more than 1.5 billion minutes of streaming but dropping to No. 2. the week-to-week gain was rare, especially given t Disney+ also had The Book of Boba Fett back in the conversation in 10th place.

Growing up in the era of VHS, there was always something creepy about a broken tape. The hiss, the crackles, and the static ... a well-worn cassette could be absolutely terrifying. "Archive 81" brings this age-old terror into the modern world thanks to Dan (played by Mamoudou Athie), a professional archivist who has been hired to restore some old tapes.
A recent trailer plunged us down the rabbit hole even further. Promising a tale of cursed videotapes in the style of "The Ring," this new Netflix series brings some thoroughly spooky moments, not to mention conspiracies, mysteries, and all-out weirdness. Throw in a remote research facility...

Ozark returned for the first installment of its fourth season and immediately went to No. 1 on Netflix’s weekly top 10 TV series list.
The Jason Bateman- and Laura Linney-fronted crime drama clocked 77 million hours watched on the service, despite coming in late in the week. The series dropped January 21 and topped Netflix’s top 10 English-language list for the week of January 17-23.
It comes two years after the dark drama’s third season, a delay not helped by the Covid-19 pandemic. The return of the fourth and final season, which will consist of 14 episodes, also helped the first season crack the top 10 with 25M hours clocked, presumably as new fans discover the show or old fans want to reacquaint themselves with Marty and Wendy Byrde.

‘Archive 81’ Star Dina Shihabi on That Family Secret, How Melody and Dan Could Connect in a Season 2
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the finale of Netflix’s “Archive 81.”
Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi) spends the majority of the first season of Netflix’s “Archive 81” separated from the show’s other key characters, given that the camcorder-toting Visser resident’s story takes place in the ’90s and her work is being studied in the present day by archivist Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie).
But in the final moments of the “Archive 81” Season 1 finale, Melody becomes a literal blast from the past, as she is dragged through a portal from The Otherworld dimension she has been trapped in for decades by cult-leader Samuel (Evan Jonigkeit) and falls out in front of her long-lost mother, Julia Bennett/Bobbi (Jacqueline Antaramian), and Dan’s best friend, Mark (Matt McGorry). Samuel suspiciously doesn’t come through with her and Dan is nowhere to be seen,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched the finale of Netflix’s “Archive 81.”
After eight episodes of slowly unraveling its cult-centric mysteries and building up its mold-laced mythology, Netflix’s “Archive 81” concluded its first season with a twist that flipped the tape over for a potential second season: Dan Turner (Mamoudou Athie) crossed into The Otherworld controlled by the demon/god Kaelego to rescue Melody Pendras (Dina Shihabi). On their way out, Dan was shoved back into the post-Visser-apartment-building-fire timeline in 1994 New York City, while Melody was dragged by cult-leader Samuel (Evan Jonigkeit) through the present-day door Dan had entered.
And yes, Dan really has been blasted into the past, and is not trapped in The Otherworld being fooled with another one of Kaelego’s close-enough-to-reality fantasies, according to “Archive 81” showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine.

I chatted with Lars Nilsen for his publication Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of The American Genre Film Archive (edited by Kier-La Janisse). Nilsen speaks to the lengthy process of putting the book together, which includes extensive conversations with the creators of the original Alamo Drafthouse cinema in Austin, Texas, specifically focusing on the creation of the Weird Wednesday series. We spoke on a handful of film titles and alumni of the series, the impossibility of naming any favorites, and Nilsen’s initial inspirations.

Austin, TX – Mondo is excited to announce the new book release of Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive, available for saleon November 16, 2021 from author Lars Nilsen, editor Kier-La Janisse, along with several genre enthusiast contributors. Nilsen, a longtime Alamo Drafthouse film programmer and now at Austin Film Society, and Janisse, genre scholar and author (House of Psychotic Women), programmer and documentary filmmaker (Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror), have written a definitive guide to exploitation cinema.
At the dawn of this century, a scrappy one-screen theater in Austin, Texas became ground zero for a revolution in film exhibition. That cinema, the Alamo Drafthouse, took the seemingly foolhardy step of offering free screenings of exploitation and horror movies that had quite literally been consigned to the scrap heap. There have been some very public examples of works that began life as fanfiction only to later become published books— the most famous examples probably being E.L. James’ 50 Shades of Grey, Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones, or Anna Todd’s After. But not all works published on fanfiction websites are fanfiction. Fanfiction platforms, such as Archive of Our Own or Wattpad, also play host to “original” (not based on an existing canon) non-commercial fiction. While these original works are, by and large, less common than fic, they often have much in common with their transformative fandom neighbors.

To celebrate the UK release of Archive, new the sci-fi drama from writer/director Gavin Rothery, we sat down with the filmmaker and his two leads to delve deeper into his world of artificial intelligence.
Set in 2038, Archive tells the story of George Almore (Theo James) who is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready and this sensitive final phase is also the riskiest. Especially as he has a goal that must be hidden at all costs: being reunited with his dead wife.
Part Ex_Machina, part Blade Runner and part Her, Archive deals with the subjects of the afterlife, death, love and man vs machine in a touching and dynamic way that feels fresh and exciting. James and Martin tells us why Rothery’s story spoke to them, why they felt compelled to be part of it and why the film feels different to what you have seen before.

The increasingly circuitous saga of The Blacklist continues into its eighth season, creating the opportunity to complete unfinished business. The move continues the ongoing saga of enigmatic antihero “Concierge of Crime,” Raymond Reddington (James Spader), the world’s most-wanted criminal who – unbeknownst to the general public – enjoys an immunity deal with the F.B.I. in exchange for leads about his vast array of criminal contacts (the titular blacklist), frequently shadowed by special agent Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone), who, as revealed later in the series, happens to be the daughter he conceived with a deadly Russian spy.

Exclusive: CAA has inked filmmaker Gavin Rothery, who recently made his feature directorial debut with the sci-fi movie Archive which he also wrote.
Before SXSW’s cancellation due to Covid-19, the Theo James-Stacy Martin movie was set for a premiere at the Austin, TX fest.
Archive is set in 2038 and follows George Almore, who is working on a true human-equivalent AI. His latest prototype is almost ready, and this sensitive phase is also the riskiest as he looks to reunite with his dead wife.
Originally a comic artist, Rothery worked in the games industry since 1996. This led him to the co-creation and design for Duncan Jones’ 2009 movie Moon.
Rothery also wrote and directed the cinematic intro for the award-winning video game Titanfall, and designed numerous starships for the game Star Citizen.
He is represented by Rob Kraitt at Casarotto, Ramsay, and Associates in the UK.

“Set in 2038, “Archive” convincingly jumbles eras of futurism, as somewhat quaint old-school robotics give way to more uncannily sinuous forms. “Gravity” composer Steven Price’s score, meanwhile, blends sparse strings and glassy synths, reflecting the marriage of human touch and metallic industrial sheen in George’s mad-scientist meddlings.
