Season One Review
southdavid24 January 2019
Stepping away from his DC multiverse for a moment, Greg Berlanti brings us a 21st century take on an tale of obsession and murder that has jumped into the public zeitgeist since it's rebirth on Netflix at the start of 2019.

Joe (Penn Badgley) meets Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail) in his New York bookstore and is immediately smitten. Sensing a connection, he begins to use social media to investigate Beck and soon fuels his growing obsession by switching from cyber stalking to the in person kind. Discovering that Beck is seeing the awful Benjy (Lou Taylor Pucci) Joe decides to take matters into his own hands.

I quite enjoyed the first season of "You". Despite the soapy presentation, it's surprisingly dark and funny, both "American Psycho" and "Dexter" are similarly themed touch points. It works very hard to make you have mixed feelings for Joe whose despicable actions are mitigated (slightly) by the fact that his victims are, to varying degrees, generally pretty awful too. Joe is also charming and witty, and the fact you hear the show almost entirely from his point of view also makes you root for him at times when you occasionally know that you shouldn't. There are a lot of reviews here that are not very complimentary about Beck, most of which I think are pretty harsh. She is perhaps a little too easily led by her friends but she's certainly not deserving of Joe's warped attention.

There is the occasional leap of logic is required to keep the plot going, for example, Beck has a ground floor apartment and appears the be completely oblivious as to what curtains are, those only deepen as the season runs on. So much so I worry about the fact it's running beyond a single series. It reaches what I feel would be a serviceable end point, but then has a last minute mini-twist designed seemingly, for no other reason than to keep the show going.

I feel like I'll be back when season two does arrive, but with expectations a little lowered.

Bluebeard´s Castle Changed Everything
PatrickShow17 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The last of episode of season 1 shifted my emotional involvement with the characters of Joe and Beck.

The whole season I was not really fan of Beck, I did not really like her personality. The way she acted, the way she treated Joe, her friends, her family, how she wanted to be this big writer but the only thing she ever did for it was complaining and crying and slacking of and not sitting behind the computer to get it done.

On the other hand Joe was like a cool friend from the next door, a neighbour who was there when you needed help with whatever you could think of. And he really, really, really cared for Beck.

But then the last episode happened and I started to see him for the psychopath he really is and Beck for just a girl who wanted to be loved. Really loved.

The poem she was writing locked in that basement, the perfect metaphor between Bluebeard and Prince Charming and Joe just moved me. I fell in love with the character, I understood her.

And then he killed her. And I was angry even though I suspected it would end like this. All she ever wanted was to be published and at the end she was not there to see it.

Heartbreaking ending for me and I swear I will not fall for Joe´s charm in Season 2.

A satisfying conclusion to the first season
DVD_Connoisseur3 January 2019
"You" will split the opinion of its audience. Whilst the character of Joe Goldberg may have the viewer rooting for him for the majority of the series, episode 9 proved a turning point for this reviewer. At least, for a little while.

Like a romantic Dexter Morgan, Goldberg is mad, bad and dangerous to know. But he also helps the downtrodden and abused.

So, on the scales of Good and Bad, where does Goldberg sit?

Elizabeth Lail is tremendous as the emotionally torn Beck.

The last episode is worth the entire season
sharib-0549312 November 2018
The show does have a way of making you believe in love and then taking a reconsideration into account. What really should be the boundary one needs to draw or limits that it can cross. Whether it even matters in a long run because all we are is a memoir of somebody's memory.. As long as they remember us...

Almost 10

Warning: Spoilers
Loved the very end, that was a surprise. The only reason I'm giving 9 instead of 10 is because come on some psycho has you locked up & you finally get out, you're only going to hit him once with the mallet? & then leave the mallet with him? I get it though, cant kill off the main character lol. Overall excellent series though.

Wow
mihmichael8 March 2022
Wanted to watch a new TV show so because of lots of good reviews I started "You". Well, it's got some "Dexter" vibe but I must say - I loved it!

And the season finale was the best part, the last scene was "wow" and so I can say about the first season of "You". Way above expectations.

Social media sociopath thriller - surprisingly very good
joebloggscity6 March 2023
Okay I have to hold up my hands and concede that I was wrongfooted. On the surface of it, this is a series that prior to watching it, I thought I'd loath and be criticising heavily, but what I found instead is a very cerebral critique of the modern social media.

We have a young man who works in a bookshop who falls for a young lady who is in a stratosphere far away from him. Her circle lives in a bubble of wealth, self-absorbed narcissism and selfishness. The catch? Our man is a sociopath, and finding himself obsessed by this young lady, he does all he can to win her heart.

As much as that doesn't sound too original, what differentiates it from other parallel series is the incredibly good writing. It's based on the current era, with this circle being social media influencers in the top tier, and this show is the first I've seen that has managed to merge a TV storyline with social media, be it texting, calling or whatever. It's often a struggle for many writers.

Admittedly, the acting is little to write home about (esp by the lead female 'Beck'), but that doesn't get in the way of a surprising and often twisting set of story arcs as our lead man distrubs this world to win his lady. Uncomfortable as it is to watch, it is intriguing and engrossing. None of the central characters are particularly ones you will empathise with, but there are many other characters with whom you will find of interest and symathise with.

This has been an excellent first season, I really recommend it and look forward to watching the next season.

About plotholes
eunbi053028 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Episode 10 2:20, when Mr. Mooney locks Joe we can see the cage's door open and there is a lock inside, thus possible to open with a spare key. There are locks that allow you to open from both sides, thus it is plausible.

Some are excusable, other's not so much, Benji's disappearance wasn't considered since Joe kept updating his social media, so I buy people not looking for him. Peach being alone in that huge estate, I doubt, someone as spoiled as her would want people to cook her food, drive her around, so Joe wouldn't be able to sneak in, also she is filthy rich and doesn't have camera in her state? When Joe mugs Dr. Nicky seems plausible, a lot of people get mugged everyday, everywhere, for a stalker that knows your routes would be even easier. Finally Beck, I don't know how did Joe brought her from his condo to the cage, and there is the matter that she was screaming and only Paco could hear her? Seems like a huge plothole.

Some questions
ElvisSavir14 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So, Benji was that rich and that important that he got killed, he disappeared and nobody ever missed him? If Beck left the keys in the lock, how Joe could open the door from the inside witth the other key? I predicted the end in the first episode, however I wanted to get surprised and I wasnt. So, let's kill everybody and nobody will ever see me. Everybody suddenly dissapeared when Joe was about to commit a crime. He hit Peach, nobody was there, he hit the Dr, nobody was there, he took Beck from his appartament to the library and found nobody on the way, he killed the cop, nobody saw anything, Beck screamed from the door to the basement, nobody heard anything. I try to steal my mom's food from the fridge at 3am, I got caught immediately

What a show ! I am SHOCKED.
rajjindal-7292520 September 2020
I don't know why this show is so underrated. It is so better than stranger things or other more popular shows. I was very emotional after beck murdered. I think she should made saw alive Instead of candace. Elizabeth lail is the best thing in this series on the basis of her acting. Stop everything and watch this. But why always creators mke season 2 and ruin all the series ? I saw season 2 it is ok but not perfect and therefore i am disappointed.

The game is over, a new path begins, but in the middle of all this is a new turn.

You Season 1 Episode 10

Review : Ultimately, it's been a long time coming to understand what really happened, but in the end, what happened, why? This episode is good enough like the previous episode but the end of the episode is awesome. This episode ended in such a way that we can't wait to see Season 2 even after hundreds of attempts. We are so compelled to watch Season 2, the only reason for this compulsion is the last scene of the 10th episode of Season One. I have literally become a fan of this story. The rest of the good things about this episode are discussed below.

Acting : All the actors and actresses have performed well enough and perfectly. The episode has become so good and so beautiful because of their perfect performance. I would like to thank all the actors and actresses who have made this episode so good by performing so beautifully and so well.

Direction : The director of this episode has read very well in his introduction. He has tried his best to make every actor-actress do a great job. That is why we are one today That's why we got a chance to enjoy such a beautiful episode today. Watching this episode really makes me want to give a big thank you to the director.

Story and Dialogue : The story of this episode shows a lot of things together, but they are presented to us in such a beautiful and specific form that we did not find it boring or bad for a single moment to see the shots. Before I say anything about the story of the episode, I would like to thank the story writers of this episode for writing such a beautiful story. The story of this episode we will see the story of a boy who did a lot to protect his love but the girl did not love him so much that he cheated on her. The episode tells of a girl who went from the path of her life to the path of death without guilt.

Soundtrack and Background score : No sound was noticed to be used in this episode and good enough background scote usage was noticed.

Cinematography and Editing :The cinematography has played a very big role in this episode as the episode is completely indoor. Shooting in small indoor spaces is difficult and risky enough. The editing is good enough and I would like to thank the team of editors on my behalf.

Other Departments :Lighting, Vfx, location sound designing everything is good enough. I would like to thank everyone for making this episode so hard and loving that it is getting so good.

Overall Episode : Judging from all the aspects, I gave this episode ten out of ten stars.

Thanks so much for reading my review.

When I review episodes, that review is based entirely on my own personal ideas. Seeing the episodes of any season of any series, I think I write it in the review. I know, maybe in my reviews I often write something bad, like the writers didn't write the story well or the director didn't do well or the actors-actresses over-acted. But I don't use foul language or profanity in my reviews. If I unknowingly hurt someone in my review or if someone feels bad after reading my review, then I sincerely apologize to him.

I thank you for reading my review so patiently.

A slow descent...
vontrani30 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The whole thing started interesting and kept surprising you for a long time. Only later on, when the killing spree got crazy so got logic. I mean this series doesn't happen in a fantasy, superhero world, or at least it pretends not to do so. So here we are to believe that Joe can murder Elijah, Benji, Peach, Ron and in the end Beck through an assortment of methods, partially by abducting them or attacking them physically, robbing his therapist and not only does nobody notice all of this in that "little town", but also does absolutely nobody notice that these people are missing while the connecting element is out there in plain sight. I especially found the part after Beck's death "amusing" because Blythe and that asian chick don't seem to find it odd that two of their closest friends died and one of Beck's exes disappeared without ever reappearing, heck, his buddies from that drink startup seemed not to care either, just as his family.

Didn't need a 2nd season
simonbirnie7011 June 2019
Throughout it was a great show, however there were major plot holes... I really don't think there needed to be a season 2, like what can they really do now? The whole Candice story seems boring imo. We will see and I'm looking forward to it but they should've wrapped it up already

WEIRD NOT ACCEPTABLE FINALE!
aarshjpatel29 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Bruhhh..like wtf did I just watch!? The series was good till 8th or can say 9th episode but what was the whole finale about man! HOW CAN YOU KILL THE PERSON WHO U SAYS IS LOVE OF YOUR LIFE!! AND GET MOVE ON WITH IT SO EASILY! Like we know this guy is a psycho but still what's the message they want to send to the audience! And yes about Paco,He made him a kind of criminal too! Although it was understandable for his character but still I didnt like it. I was so pissed off when Beck kind of forgive him and said love u and all which then turned out to be a twist. Then I was like thank God but then guess what they did?! KILL HER!? SICK FINALE. Also wanna say that I watched trailer of season 2 and it was ok..I think I want to bear that season coz it looks promising but gonna miss Beck. She was so good.

Paco is wise.
bombersflyup6 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Solid season finale. Like "Dexter" again with the cage, with Doakes trying to talk through it. I thought it might actually work out here, because he does really mean well. I still think Joe's a better person than Beck even though he's a stalking murderer, ha. The ending with the book and the therapist is a bit of a stretch. So it's good that Beck's gone, but why Candace... it's not exactly enticing me watch the next season, but I probably will anyway.

Evil wins
checure27 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Yes, the series is captivating and one gets to see a beautiful side of New York City BUT, the way the writer gets your attention and supense and devotion is by making Joe's victims REALLY stupid... 1) Beck forgets the key in the key hole, even though the camera made damn sure you and I would notice it ... 2) But now she gets a second chance: she hits him hard with a hammer ... geeee perhaps another hit could make sure he is OUT but nooo, lets go play with the key ring until he miraculously gets back up (even though he was already stabbed and hit on the head) Just sooo frustrating that we as a society, prefer the bad guy to win so we can keep watching... At least with Dexter, he went after the bad guys!

DID HE JUST KILL OFF BECK!!!!
dhanushgowda-0707821 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I mean what was the point of killing her of😭😭😭 At the end it was all for nothing????? Now it's just the same as it before he met Beck... If you think it DEEP you'll REALISE that there was no point of of this season.... It really makes difficult for the viewers to continue watching the second season. Why didn't Joe bury the evidence of Beck's, Peach's and Benjie's when everything was okayyy????? This episode is driving me INSANE ..... I'm expecting a similar ending in season 2 allllll for nothing!!!! The writers of this show wanted to make it a hit but this is a terrible terrible ending for a season...

Very plain
aliabdallah200016 November 2018
It is such a shame. This series had many potentials and throwing them all way just so they can focus on how Beck is trying to escape from Joe is just boring. I wanted more hidden facts about Joe and even about Beck. Like those flashbaks of Mr. Mooney while he abused Joe. Great actors, great story, bad bad directing Go find yourself a better series. The only good thing about this series is it's pilot.
