For their 15th album, Public Enemy are back on Def Jam, the powerhouse label they helped build with their golden-age hip-hop classics. It’s a well-timed return to the center of the industry. The rise of the Black Lives Matter movement has seen a reawakening of the protest radicalism that Pe originally brought to rap, from Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright” to Lil Baby’s “The Bigger Picture” to DaBaby’s BLM remix of “Rockstar.” So when they ask, “Is rap still the black CNN?” — embodying the voice of the music...

Aneesh Chaganty's (Searching) horror/thriller Run was originally slated to hit theaters earlier this year, but like everything else, Covid-19 had other plans and forced the Lionsgate flick off the schedule. It was later announced that Hulu had picked the film but hadn't settled on a release date, but we now know that Run will debut on November 20th, 2020. Mark your calendars. The…...

Hulu has set a release date for Aneesh Chaganty’s (Searching) Run starring Emmy winner Sarah Paulson and newcomer Kiera Allen. The thriller is set to drop on the streamer November 20.
Run was the latest film from Lionsgate to forego a theatrical release and head to digital. The horror Antebellum also skipped the big screen stateside dropped on PVOD. Hulu acquired domestic rights to Run from Lionsgate in what was reported to be a competitive situation. However, Run, like Antebellum is expected to be released theatrically overseas. The movie was originally set to have a May 8 (which was appropriate considering it was Mother’s Day) theatrical release but due to a little global pandemic, it, like other films pivoted to other release strategies due to the shut down the big theater chains in mid-March.

Young singer Shannon K has unveiled a new song, which she describes as her personal interpretation of self-confidence and dreams.
Shannon, the daughter of playback star Kumar Sanu, says her new song, titled "Run", exhorts people to be themselves.
"I feel like in the past I had been afraid of putting my true self out there. I was told to not dream big, to try and fit in to look alike, to change my style so I can be accepted by the people," said the singer.
"But somewhere I felt like I was cheating myself by being someone who I'm not. The song is a motivation to everyone who needs encouragement to be themselves," she added.

Director Philippe Lacôte and a still from "Night of the Kings" his second feature
We have our third reported Oscar submission for Best International Feature at the 2020 Oscars and this one is a rarity. Ivory Coast, a West African country, has only ever submitted two previous films to the race. Though Ivory Coast, a former French colony, became independent in 1960, their first submission Black and White in Color (1976), which won the Oscar, was the debut of French filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud who was quickly snapped up by Hollywood. Ivory Coast didn't submit again until they had their own debut director, Philippe Lacôte. His first film, a crime drama called Run, was submitted to represent the country in 2015 and his sophomore feature will represent the country again. Screen Daily recently spoke with the filmmaker about why there are so few African films at A-list festivals and how this new film came into being.

Neon has acquired the rights to “Night of the Kings,” the sophomore narrative feature film by director Philippe Lacôte that is the official Oscar submission from the Ivory Coast and that has been selected as part of the lineups for Venice, Toronto and the New York Film Festival, the distributor announced Wednesday.
“Night of the Kings” made its premiere on Monday in Venice and will next screen at TIFF and NYFF later this month. Neon will announce release plans at a later date.
“Night of the Kings” follows a young man on his first night in the infamous Ivorian prison, “La Maca.” Upon arriving, he is christened the “Roman,” or “Storyteller,” and must entertain his audience until morning, risking death should he fail. Under a blood-red moon, he crafts a tale weaving together the country’s mythological past and recent history, while around him, both prison and national politics threaten to boil over.

Fox Television Stations will revive storied game show You Bet Your Life, with Jay Leno as host, in the fall of 2021.
The show will be carried by Fox’s owned-and-operated stations and also syndicated nationally. Tom Werner will serve as the executive producer, along with showrunner and executive producer David Hurwitz. Fox First Run will distribute the show’s 180 episodes.
“We need a familiar face to make us laugh and we are incredibly proud and excited to reinvent this renowned franchise with the enormously talented Jay,” station group CEO Jack Abernethy said in the official announcement.
Leno said one of his favorite things “is to talk to regular people and draw humor out of them. This is a comedy show wrapped in a game show that allows me to do just that.”
The new version of the show preserves the interviews and unpredictable banter with contestants, which was first brought to life by Groucho Marx.

Like many concepts, the idea of true love has become, to a large degree, the territory for advertisement, self-help books and an industry revolving around greeting cards or flower bouquets. Reading some of these books, watching commercial romantic films and looking at the images associated with the concept may just result in a nervous breakdown, for love itself has been commercialized. For many the goal of experiencing true love has become blurred by images and texts, most of which contain a capitalist or corporate agenda, which has resulted in a great deal of uncertainty whether we truly know what true love is, if we have experienced it or if we ever will. In his directing debut “Gone with the Light” screenwriter Ding Run-nian tackles this rather complex issue within a story that blends elements of science-fiction and drama, exploring the aforementioned questions and the personal struggles that follow the answers.

Natalie Bailey with her Emmy.
Natalie Bailey was set to shoot feature comedy Sumo in South Africa when the pandemic struck, which turned out to be a blessing as she was then asked to serve as set-up director on Aquarius Films’ Sbs miniseries The Unusual Suspects.
The Melbourne-based director, who shot isolation comedy Retrograde for the ABC, readily agreed. She had long wanted to make a 4-parter for Sbs and she was intrigued by the story of immigrants working in Sydney’s affluent Eastern suburbs with strong female characters.
Scripted by Jessica Redenbach, Roger Monk and Vonne Patiag, the plot revolves around the theft of a $10 million necklace from self-made Filipino businesswoman Roxanne Waters’ home during her twins’ birthday party. The suspects include socialite Sara Beasley whose life is crumbling fast, and her long-suffering nanny, Evie De La Rosa, a godmother for other Filipino domestic workers.

“Run,” a Lionsgate horror thriller starring Sarah Paulson that was supposed to be released in movie theaters on May 8 in time for Mother’s Day, will now be shown on streaming site Hulu instead. No start date right now, but the scary movie will also be released in select theaters overseas.
The title was pulled from the studio’s release schedule in mid-March in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak, when many film release dates were pushed back or switched to becoming a VOD offering or premiering on a streaming site. According to The Hollywood Reporter, there was no lack of suitors for the chiller directed by Aneesh Chaganty. That might be partly because the all-too-relatable sheltering-in-place theme of the movie is about teen girl (newcomer Kiera Allen) who has been raised in total isolation while relying on a wheelchair. The immediate future of the theatrical industry is still shrouded in uncertainty, with the major studios continuing to pull their releases from the calendar on a regular basis as things show little sign of returning to normal anytime soon. Hollywood is bracing itself for a $20 billion shortfall this year, but in some cases, skipping theaters entirely could work to the benefit of smaller titles.
There are countless low budget projects that get lost in the shuffle as audiences flock to see the latest effects-heavy blockbusters, and as a result, some of the best movies of the year end up flying under the radar. One recent example is Palm Springs, which set sales records on Hulu even though there’s every chance the acclaimed comedy could have sank without a trace at the box office had it scored a theatrical release after all four of The Lonely Island’s previous features ended up bombing.

Lionsgate has sold domestic rights to Sarah Paulson’s “Run” to streaming service Hulu, making the thriller the latest in a long line of titles to ditch its planned theatrical release amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Run” is directed by Aneesh Chaganty. Natalie Qasabian and Sev Ohanian are producing from a script by Chaganty and Ohanian. Paulson portrays the mother of a teenage girl — played by newcomer Kiera Allen — who has been raised in total isolation. The girl’s life begins to unravel as she discovers her mother’s sinister secret.
“Run” will be released theatrically in select international markets. “Run” is the second feature from the filmmaking team behind “Searching,” which starred John Cho as a father searching for his missing daughter. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to earn more than $75 million worldwide.
Hulu handled the release of Andy Samberg’s romantic comedy “Palm Springs” — its most-watched movie premiere.

And it’s another Lionsgate film that’s skipping theatrical. We can confirm that the Sarah Paulson horror movie Run is moving off the theatrical release schedule and heading to Hulu.
The streamer has acquired domestic rights from Lionsgate in what is reported to be a competitive situation. Last week, the mini-major announced that its Janelle Monae horror movie Antebellum was skipping the big screen stateside for PVOD on all digital platforms on Sept. 18.
Like Antebellum, Run will be released overseas theatrically, but let’s face it, you need a domestic release to prop these movies’ profiles up. Even though the big circuits are opening in the near future, with Cinemark opening the doors to 43 venues this weekend, and AMC and Regal following on Aug. 21, increasingly distributors are deciding to forgo low-to-mid budget movies on the big screen, and put them straight into the home. Even though the big circuits are opening in the near future, with Cinemark opening the doors to 43 venues this weekend, and AMC and Regal following on Aug. 21, increasingly distributors are deciding to forgo low-to-mid budget movies on the big screen, and put them straight into the home. Also, with everyone drunk on the PVOD and streaming release,...

In a world of frustratingly vague TV show titles like Reprisal, Dark, and Run, some titles have the moral courage to stand up and declare their intentions, loud and proud. Such is the case with Netflix’s latest teenage action comedy. It’s called Teenage Bounty Hunters and you will absolutely guess what it’s all about.
Teenage Bounty Hunters stars Maddie Phillips and Anjelica Bette Fellini as fraternal twins and best friends Sterling and Blair Wesley. As the show’s title so helpfully implies, Sterling and Blair are 16-year-old bounty hunters. Netflix’s full synopsis of the show reads:
“Rebelling against their buttoned-up Southern community, sixteen-year-old fraternal twin sisters Sterling (Maddie Phillips) and Blair (Anjelica Bette Fellini) Wesley team up with veteran bounty hunter Bowser Jenkins (Kadeem Hardison) for an over-the-top adventure as they dive into the world of bail skipping baddies and suburban secrets while trying to navigate high school drama — love,...

Maya Rudolph has two nominations for Best Comedy Guest Actress this year, making her the first actor in Emmy history to be nominated twice in the same guest category in a single year. This is her third consecutive nomination for her recurring role as Judge Gen on “The Good Place,” which contends now for its final season. This is her second nomination for “Saturday Night Live”; she is up for her impression of Senator Kamala Harris, having been recognized previously for a 2012 hosting gig.
SEEour rundown on this year’s Emmy Award nominations.
Dueling guest nominations have only been possible since 2010, as performers were limited to one listing per guest ballot before then. A similar rule remains in effect for the Best Directing and Best Technical Direction categories. A caveat is that Jane Alexander and Angela Lansbury were each nominated in Best Drama Guest Actress for multiple series in 2000 and 2005 respectively,...

Film is second feature from Ivorian director Philippe Lacôte after ’Run’.
Paris-based sales company Memento Films International (Mfi) has acquired Ivorian director Philippe Lacôte’s Night Of The Kings, ahead of its world premiere in Horizons at the Venice Film Festival, running September 2-12 this year.

The Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on Tuesday morning, July 28, so who will the top contenders be? Thousands of Gold Derby users have spent months handicapping this year’s contests. Scroll down to see our official predictions in 24 categories, listed in order of their racetrack odds, which have been calculated by combining those users forecasts. Our projected winners are highlighted in gold, with close dark horse candidates in italics.
A lot has changed going into this year’s event. The Covid-19 pandemic has affected productions all across the television industry, forcing some shows to cease productions while other programs have improvised socially distanced versions from home. Coronavirus concerns also pushed back the Emmy schedule a bit. Nominations were originally scheduled to be announced on July 14 but were pushed back two weeks. And the grace period for “hanging episodes” of shows that continued airing after the May 31 deadline was extended...

Cherry Jones is back to defend her Emmy crown for “The Handmaid’s Tale” as the reigning Best Drama Guest Actress champion, but she faces heavy competition — from herself. Gold Derby’s combined odds actually predict that Jones will be snubbed for “The Handmaid’s Tale” and nominated for her new recurring role on Best Drama Series front-runner “Succession” instead. The rules allow her to be nominated for both, but nobody has ever been nominated against themselves in a guest category. Apprehension about predicting history to be made also helps to explain why Maya Rudolph ranks outside the top 20 in Best Comedy Guest Actress for “Saturday Night Live.” She has been nominated previously in that category for that show, but she is already the front-runner in that race for “The Good Place.”

Earlier this year “The Good Place” signed off the air to great fanfare, but how many Emmy voters watching? NBC’s cerebral comedy about life after death starred Ted Danson as a demon with a heart of gold and Kristen Bell as a human struggling to become a good person, with its last episode airing January 30. The uplifting show has been nominated for seven Emmys overall, including Best Comedy Series (2019), Best Comedy Actor for Danson and Best Comedy Guest Actress for Maya Rudolph, but has yet to win anything. Now one of Gold Derby’s 31 Emmy Experts thinks that will change for its final season.
Lynette Rice (Ent. Weekly) predicts “The Good Place” will take home a pair of Emmys for Best Comedy Series and Best Comedy Actor. This savvy prognosticator also forecasts a career-first nomination for Bell, but says the ultimate winner of Best Comedy Actress will be Merritt Wever (“Run”). Don’t forget,...

Once upon a time, “Tenet” was set to open today, July 17. When Warners dated the film, rivals got out of the way. At this writing, it’s scheduled for August 12 worldwide, and it’s just one of many major releases to see (sometimes multiple) delays — or, rerouting to VOD release. Trying to track, or even remember, all the films that shifted would challenge even the most obsessed film fan.
With that in mind, we’ve recreated the original release calendar for March 20 through July 17 as it stood on March 3 — the day before Bond film “No Time to Die” shifted from April to November, auguring a massive number of changes to come.
The list, which we will continue updating, includes all studio wide release titles to date, and the most significant specialized titles that anticipated a limited release. Of note: A film like “Palm Springs” (Neon) was expected to have a...

With television seasons prone now to span 10 episodes instead of 22, actors are finding time to lead multiple series. Steve Carell (“Space Force”) contends to be the first to be nominated for leading both a comedy and a drama in the same Emmy cycle, while his “The Morning Show” co-lead Reese Witherspoon (“Big Little Lies”) contends to be the first to be nominated for three lead Emmys in the same year. The Run TV series has officially run out of gas at HBO. It's been confirmed by the cable channel that the romantic comedic thriller series won't be returning for a second season.
The Run TV show stars Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson, with recurring guest stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Rich Sommer, Tamara Podemski, and Archie Panjabi. In college, Ruby Richardson (Wever) and her boyfriend, Billy Johnson (Gleeson), made a pact. They promised that, if either one of them texted the word “Run” and the other replied with the same, they would drop everything and meet in Grand Central Station and travel across America together. Now, 17 years later, Ruby is shaken out of her humdrum suburban life with that text and she walks away from her ordinary suburb life and flies to New York. There, she reunites with Billy and boards...

As networks continue making changes to their upcoming lineups, they're dropping good and bad news.
This afternoon, premium network HBO was hard at work, as was broadcast network Fox.
On HBO's plate was a decision about the critically acclaimed comedy, Run. And on Fox's plate was the consideration about the holiday-themed limited series, The Moodys.
Only one of them scored a renewal.
If we look at it from the persepctive of the audience and the critics using Rotten Tomatoes as our guide, there is an interesting tale to tell.
Run garnered an 80% approval rating from critics, but they got a paltry 47% audience appreciation score. Ouch.
On the other hand, The Moodys didn't do so well with critics with a 62% consensus. Viewers were much more taken with the Fox series, though, earning an 83% approval score.
So what does it mean? Probably nothing to the networks involved. But it might have translated into viewers.

HBO will not be proceeding with a second season of Run, its romantic comedic thriller starring Domhnall Gleeson and Merritt Wever.

British actress Julia Sawalha has claimed she is being chopped from the upcoming Chicken Run sequel because her voice now sounds “too old”.
In a statement published online, Sawalha said she has been told by producers via her agent that the character of Ginger will be recast with a younger actress for the second movie, and that she hadn’t been given the opportunity to do a voice test to determine her suitability for the role. For the most part, Gold Derby’s Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict that the Best Comedy Actress trophy will go to either Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”) or Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”). However, one gutsy Emmy prognosticator out of 29 (Lynette Rice of Ent. Weekly) instead goes out on a limb for Merritt Wever (“Run”). And why not? This beloved actress has already taken home two Emmy Awards — both rather unexpectedly — for her work on “Nurse Jackie” (Comedy Supporting Actress in 2013) and “Godless” (Limited/Movie Supporting Actress in 2018).
Wever was so gobsmacked by her first win that she infamously gave one of the shortest Emmy speeches of all time: “Thank you so much. Um … I gotta go, bye.” So it’d be foolish to underestimate the actress yet again at the 2020 ceremony. Watch the Emmys flashback video below.

If you take a peek at the predictions of Gold Derby’s Top 24 Users for Best Comedy Actress, you’ll see that Elle Fanning is thisclose to receiving an Emmy nomination for Hulu’s period dramedy “The Great.” This category has 86 ballot submissions, which means there will be six nominees (see how voting works), and Fanning comes in behind seven other leading ladies: Catherine O’Hara (“Schitt’s Creek”), Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Christina Applegate (“Dead to Me”), Linda Cardellini (“Dead to Me”), Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”) and Merritt Wever (“Run”). But I think we’re all underestimating Fanning’s Emmy chances. Below, see my Top 4 reasons why she’ll beat the odds and score a nomination on July 28.
