Innovative movie by Nica Noelle
lor_14 October 2020
"The Therapist" goes beyond the usual Gay porn drama, as Nica Noelle introduces a novel film structure and format, not pretentious but adding immeasurably to the movie's power.

It simply presents a well-written story of a shrink (great trouper for Nica, Brendan Patrick) and his outgoing patient (Hans Berlin), with flashbacks depicting Hans' interracial sexual liaisons with a muscular jogger (Jessie Lee) and a waiter (Drake Magnum).

Besides the four explicit sex scenes that constitute the main thrust of any movie from her Icon Male banner, Nica introduces a structural device I hadn't seen before, which sort of resembles a variation on the familiar "Rashomon" style of storytelling. After Hans relates each of his homosexual dalliances, cheating on and lying to his wife Courtney over the phone, we see Brendan re-creating these episodes as his own erotic fantasies, substituting himself in Hans' place. The dialog and stagings are nearly identical, and we see Brendan masturbating in his chair as he imagines the vicarious sex with Drake and Jessie. Artistic license is taken in that we see the same actors, even though Brendan doesn't know them other than listening to his patient's account.

Tight control of the movie's mood and emotions is Nica's strong suit, contrasting amusingly with the cast breaking up on set as chronicled in a Bloopers section on the DVD. As is often the case, especially in the moving ending to this chamber piece, I come away wondering what might have been had Nica brought her creativity to mainstream filmmaking, considering the high quality and her occasional classic achievement working solely in Adult Cinema.
