Hamlet (1996)
Unique and Excellent Adaptation
I saw this adaptation of Hamlet in my English class. When I heard that it would be adapted for Edwardian times, I was very skeptical. I didn't know if the legendary tragedy could be made into a Twentieth-Century tale.
Must I say that this is a wonderful and well-made version of Hamlet! Kenneth Branagh is outstanding as Hamlet; sometimes I wonder whether he is theatrically trained. Kate Winslet does a fine job as Ophelia; this is one of the movies that shows how great of an actress she is. The rest of the cast provides a good backbone to the story. I was surprised how many well-known actors are in this movie (Even the amazing Dame Judi Dench makes a cameo).
I wouldn't say this is one of the best movies I've seen, but the film is very entertaining and very powerful. I highly recommend Hamlet to anyone who is interested in a different approach on Shakespeare.
John Tucker Must Die (2006)
Teens will "Die" laughing with this enjoyable movie!
Many teens go to the movies to see a light, cute, and hilarious comedy. "John Tucker Must Die" is the perfect movie for that occasion. While unrealistic and unworthy of high-end commendation, "John Tucker Must Die" still manages to win the hearts of many guys and girls.
The film revolves around Kate Spencer (Brittany Snow), a congenial but awkward new girl at a school divided by cliques. One day, in gym class, she overhears three girls arguing over who is dating John Tucker (Jesse Metcalfe), the school hunk. The three girls are Heather (Ashanti), a wisecracking cheerleader, Beth (Sophia Bush), the school tramp, and Carrie (Arielle Kebbel), the student government president. The problem is that John Tucker is a player, and all three are dating him at the same time. Kate intervenes and agrees to help the three girls plot revenge against him. However, Kate ends up falling for John Tucker, and problems arise.
"John Tucker Must Die" was better than I expected it to be. The film has many funny parts and memorable lines. The humor and content of this movie is more suited for teens than adults, but adults might enjoy it, too. Although I sometimes question why Jesse Metcalfe was cast as John Tucker, I think everyone was suited for their roles. "John Tucker Must Die" is a cute comedy that I could see over and over.
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Disney, Why Can't You Make More Movies Like This!?
I still remember watching this movie when I was very little. I did not appreciate it as much then, but now because I am older, I can cherish this blessed masterpiece. The music in this movie is one of the best film scores ever and contains the catchiest Disney tunes. Who could ever forget the ever-popular ballroom scene? This movie, in my opinion was Alan Menken and Howard Ashman's best! I also think that this is the best Disney movie made after the great Walt Disney passed away.
I had the opportunity of seeing the Special Edition on IMAX. What an experience! The scenes were breathtaking to see on such a large screen. I even found the new song "Human Again" very entertaining.
It's such a shame that Disney hasn't made a movie like this since "Mulan". "Beauty and the Beast" will be forever remembered as the epitome of modern-day Disney movies (and should have won the Best Picture Oscar instead of "The Silence of the Lambs"). Bravo to Disney!
The Lake House (2006)
Wonderful movie!
I loved every minute of this movie! Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves have such chemistry and are perfect together. Although the plot was a little confusing as to why they were living two years apart (Keanu's character is really dead??), it was a very interesting story and left me wondering if they would be together in the end (Not all romance movies end happily, you know!). Although a remake of the Korean film "Il Mare", the film was very unique. Christopher Plummer and Shoreh Aghdashloo are also very good as supporting roles to Kate (Bullock) and Alex (Reeves). This movie is definitely one of the best romance movies of 2006!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
Disappointing, but reasonable
When I first read the critics' reviews of this film, I expected the critics to be wrong. I expected this movie to be awesome. But the critics, in some way, were actually right. I liked and didn't like this movie. The music and effects were absolutely brilliant. Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley were outstanding in their roles. The action left me on the edge of my seat and wanting more. Hans Zimmer, who did the score, definitely deserves an Oscar nomination for this film, as does Johnny Depp. However, the movie was too long. There wasn't as much story as there was in the first movie. There were too many monsters in the action scenes. Overall, this movie was not as good and addicting as the first. On the contrary, there is a twist at the end of this movie that will definitely shock you. You will want to see the third movie, which I think will be much better than this one. Overall, Dead Man's Chest is a satisfactory sequel to a beloved classic!
