Sherlock Jr. (1924)
I'm Sold On Keaton!!!
Let me just start off by saying that I was about to switch this movie at last minute to watch another one. I am so glad that I didn't. This movie is all you could ever want. It exceeded my expectations. It was funny, clever and told a story. Not only do I now understand why Buster Keaton is one of the GOATS, but at this point in my journey, I think he gives Chaplin a run for his money. There. I said it. This movie delivered BIG TIME for me. It had illusions, tricks, twists, turns, and remarkable acting. There were times in the movie where I asked myself "It's 1924...how did they do that?!". The plot kept me on the edge of my seat and Keaton sold it. There were numerous scenes, that of which, were ahead of its time. The score was brilliant and wasn't generic. If you have not seen this movie you need to, what are you waiting for? You have had 96 years! Go watch it! It's perfect! Perrrrfecccttttt!!!!
Safety Last! (1923)
Not the best, but not terrible!
Safety Last was definitely a movie I was excited for. After watching, I am happy to report I was GLAD I watched it. Was it a phenomenal movie? No. Was it a good movie? Absolutely. I had a few chuckles here and there and I can see why Lloyd is known as one of the best. He is pretty distant behind Chaplin, in my opinion, but I can see the hype around him. I thought the plot was OK, but at times I felt a little bored. This paid of in the end when watching the famous clock scene. This scene was incredible and way, WAY ahead of its time. The acting was fine and the score behind it wasn't the worst either. I wouldn't say this is an all time great movie, but I will say the clock scene is iconic. I would recommend watching it just for that scene. I was happy at the end and can see why it is beloved by so many.
Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens (1922)
Just Average, More for the Historical Appeal
Nosferatu was my 2nd horror movie of this challenge. Before I get into the review, I just want to state how I think a horror movie MUST have a great plot. If I am being honest, I
didn't find this movie scary and didn't like the plot. It was a knock off Dracula, nothing more. Both the acting and characters were average. At times, I thought it was cheesy
and over dramatic. It just wasn't for me. I know the movie is beloved by some, but I did not see the appeal. I will say, however, I liked the setting. Nosferatu's castle was a nice set
as well as the town Knock had lived in. The score was beautiful, but by the end of the movie it had gotten a little redundant. Overall, I thought it was just OK. Maybe for the time period, it was truly horrific and enjoyed by many. I don't
think it has aged well and I don't feel it is a must watch. I will say, however, it historically speaking it was a fun watch. It shouldn't even exist!
The Kid (1921)
Fantastic and Heartwarming Silent Film!
This movie was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! I enjoyed everything about it. It was funny, sad and heartwarming. I never thought a movie,
especially silent, would make me feel this way. Chaplin's performance was brilliant from the time he had appeared on the screen. Coogan, for his age, was also a phenomenal actor. I laughed
when he was cooking pancakes on the stove and using a knife. You would never see that nowadays! I could see the bond Chaplin and
Coogan had, even outside the story they were telling. The plot was easy to follow and left me on the edge of my seat. I didn't want to
look away. I am glad I didn't! It gets a perfect score!
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)
Great Acting, Not a Fan of Genre.
This was my first crack at a silent film. I put my Millennial devices down and immersed myself into the movie and the time period. One thing that stood out to me is how all of these people are not living anymore. I know it's obvious but it is just a reminder that we must not let these faces of the past be forgotten. As for the plot itself, I honestly didn't care for it. This is not a genre I enjoy to begin with, so I assumed it would be as such. The set was small and felt claustrophobic at times. I understand it was 1920, but as someone who has never watched a movie this old, I couldn't help but notice it. With all of that said, the acting was phenomenal! I did not expect the portrayal of the character's to be THAT well done. ESPECIALLY John Barrymore. The way he contorted his face when turning into Hyde was incredible! All in all, I will likely never forget watching this movie. I cannot wait to watch future movies with Barrymore!
