Guru (2007)

Want inspiration...watch Guru....it is overwhelmingly energetic!!!!!
15 January 2007
We went to watch the late night show of Guru on Sunday evening and I must admit, in recent times, it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. There was not one moment which i regretted while watching this wonderful movie with the best in all departments. Full marks to Mani Ratnam and the whole cast. It is difficult to come out of a movie happy, yet charmed and to feel so proud of astute vision (also,to be an Indian if you are overseas!) Before I start raving about Abhishek and Aishwarya..have a couple of important things to do. Even the smallest roles (Abhishek's father, his mother,Aishwarya's father, her mother, the committee head and so many others) were done sincerely by actors who are very good at what they do but are unsung heroes in Indian Cinema..I mean i do see them in good, intense roles but because there is no glamor attached, I cannot recall their names.

A friend of mine suggested that I should give a balanced review by adding some bads of the movie too....huh!!was initially tough for me, since I was so overwhelmed; On serious thoughts, I thought let me do the worst job and then start the raves and praises!!!!!but come to think of it....here are some of my objections....there were too many songs;initially back-to-back (with my husband groaning.."oh no, not another song!!!!");I kept asking what happened to Jhignis (Aishwarya's brother) because he just disappeared;when Aishwarya and Abhishek broke up, the scene shook me, but I did not understand why it broke into my most favourite song..."Aye Hairathe"!!!; And last but not the least, Mithun da deserved more screen time, given his powerful performance!!

Nonetheless, this media called cinema has matchless power to shape and influence minds. The analogy drawn with Dhirubhai Ambani was just too good! I mean I know about his milestone work in industry, trade and commerce, but never would have wanted to read a biography on him. Now I am really curious and am inclined to dig the net.Let me clarify, not to come out and mock on how he made it big by breaking/making/kicking/obeying rules. But to know more about VISIONARY and ENTREPRENEURIAL thinking!! One of the most touching statements to prove this point were made by Abhishek Bachan (Gurubhai)when he justified his stand. He said to the tune of "I saluted when asked to salute;I kicked when asked to kick, now why ask why did you kick so much and salute so much??") reflected how bureaucracy, heavy entry barriers and closed doors policy in India stiffled business growth in that era. A typical 'rags to riches' story (I am stealing my husband's expression:D) but done so well with 'into the character' acting by everybody. How Abhishek managed to get all the Gujju expression (just part of his character) to portray his larger than life vision in life speaks volumes about his homework for this film. Being born and brought up in that region myself(Western India), I am totally familiar with local talk-walk!! He looked so ordinary, yet he did such extra-ordinary things!! In fact, in this context, the actor-character line looked so bleak. I did not know whom to reckon with more, with Abhishek for being Abhishek Bachan the son of Amitabh Bachan or with the so obvious Dhirubhai reference!! Aiswarya Rai was so down-to-earth, identifiable in this movie. I really liked her work and also appreciated how she chose to dance a little awkwardly in 'Barso Re Megha Megha' (despite the fact that she is a perfect dancer) just to portray that rusty, village belly gal!! I love to listen and listen to some of the songs, especially 'Aye Hairathe' which is so soulful, so meaningful, so heart rending!! Mithun Chakravarty played Nanaji so effortlessly; Have to agree that everybody was so right in their own shoes in this movie whether it was to promote the virtue of honesty, simplicity, clear vision or simple regard and respect for spouses, elders etc; that it was difficult to point out who was right and who was wrong. Mithun did not come out as a villain neither did Madhavan. Even I knew that Guru had paved his path with dirt smeared here and there, he did not seem to wrong at all.

It was a true work which is really inspiring and totally keeps you thinking!! Wonder if Abhishek Bachan will get the National Award of not....hope he does...:) From my side, everybody on the crew deserves one!!

Watch it...for style!
21 December 2006
I wanted to see Devil Wears Prada for a long time now, but finally could make it when it was shown at a commonplace clubhouse. My expectations from this movie were too high, so I would rate it as a good movie...not super good. Words may not be able to describe how much I like Meryl Streep. She was just the most charming goddess and blazed the screen with her presence! I particularly liked her belief in super perfection and her ability to just talk with her eyes (read stare!) But i wish I could hear her talk more. Typical Fairy story, but probably, I was wanting to watch more of Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) than the other figures.....Anyways it was worth a watch! And i saw an American middle-aged couple just in front of me simply in awe and appreciation for the Devil!

Strange enough!
12 December 2006
A pretty mellow movie, actually kinda strange in parts, but totally original. It was an interesting concept for us, and the portrayal was near life. Despite a personal objection to the fact that the book writer or the book had no reference to the other characters in the movie, I appreciated the overall simplicity of the movie (not only with reference to setting, attire, mood, etc).I like the continuous calculator in our hero's mind. I like the way the charming baker wanted to make a difference to the world. I also liked the way how all of us have a sense of hygiene, when the writer while trying to visualize the jump, wipes her nose and puts it back in her pocket. I was educated by the dealt issue...WRITERS BLOCK......grrrr....i wanted to sympathize with her! In fact, I liked the way the Professor scientifically tried to narrow down to who could be the writer... What i did not like was that it was too slow (probably because of my addiction to action) and almost made me sleep in some parts...totally strange but overall worth it! My view was also painted by my husband's view that it had a philosophical edge!!

Happy watching!

Give me a break!!! Mindbogglingly numbing!
27 November 2006
A much hyped, star - studded, very much awaited movie made a scapegoat of me (read, a pure movie buff , who has far too much digestion for the worst of movie disappointments)and five others. Surely, this was a yawning ending to my Thanksgiving weekend. And when my husband, who is my partner in digesting good and bad movies alike, uttered the words MINDBLOGGLINGLY NUMBING!!! I made a note in my mind to write this comment even if it was 4 in the morning. Omiiiiiiiigosh!! how do they make this kind of stuff ??? Probably, the whole team was overconfidently sleeping and they made the movie in rest time, not worrying about content, context, dialogues, definition of characters, relevance to plot. Nothing, it was as though they cut, copied and pasted some sequences from movies and thriller books and that's it.

Bipasha Basu entered with the potential of someone who would actually shoot down the robber all the way to glory; but instead she was reduced to some absurd showpiece who danced a lot and becomes a twin!! Where did the original sharp-shooter go??

Aishwarya Rai, our very apni SUNEHRI, whose LIKE this LIKE that was so bugging, the she failed to convince her gameplan at several points. No doubt her makeover was noticeable, but Aishwarya, we don't like you with your cheekbones showing that you are almost going to end up in a no food land!! So please do at some food! No doubt the only saving grace was the excellent getup and acting of Hritik Roshan. He was a delight to the eyes and is extremely talented. The music and Choregaphy was good too, but of not much of relief.

Abhishek looked so tired and isinterested...what with all the kajal in eyes and the mafia (not cop look!!)Obviously, you realize that i don't want to waste any space here on the other characters..;)And that the crux is that even though Hritik was awesome, there were just too many spoilers in this movie!!! Wonder why me and my four friends were marooned in the hall on the third day of the release.Probably,to understand why we committed such a mistake?? We were numb and just wanted to Rush back home...period.

Happy Feet (2006)
Made me Happy and Think at the same time!
25 November 2006
The day following Thanksgiving was movie Friday for us. Incidentally we went to watch The Fountain, which hit us hard! Not that it was depressing beyond simple understanding, but it just was not right for my holiday mood. So we went ahead to make ourselves HAPPY and watched HAPPY FEET! Must say, we truly enjoyed ourselves and learnt a couple of happy lessons from the cute penguin in the movie. Be brave and be smart. Be relentless and follow your love. A fully entertaining movie, with fun and wit conveyed a simple message of being eco-cycle friendly! A good idea was to quickly show how an animal can loose his/her mind if put in a cage straight from wilderness....something which I believe is always kept in mind in most zoos and man-made parks! And not to waste time in showing how Mumble could actually communicate to the humans.

Good job...an icy cozy movie full of all emotions...love, hate, bitterness, parental worries, competition, self-realization, conquer!!

Good Work...Must watch!! will be a dividend if you go without high expectations
8 September 2006
Hey yesterday we were hopping shopping around and in the hopping process landed in the nearby AMC and chose to watch Illusionist from the pithy list of remaining late night shows. We went without much homework on the movie and enjoyed it a lot!! I mean, with due respect to anyone who has to state otherwise, the simplicity of the movie was overwhelming. Wedid want to see magic or illusions, but must say what We got was worth any ticket's money!! The setting was sophisticated and captivating; the movie was beautifully colored and the performance of Eisenheim (played by Edward Norton) totally convincing. No action here, yet substance. No special effects, yet mesmerizing...One wanted to hate the Crown Prince (played by Rufus Sewell) and one wanted that the Police Inspector (played brilliantly by Paul Giamatti) never arrest Eisenheim. So, in essence the screenplay lived upto the grandeur of the setting. On a breezy late night, don't go without high expectations, and this movie will enchant you, will make you laugh and smile in the climax!! Good Work......must watch if you want to relax and get some good stuff too!! and that too, totally beautiful, totally colorful, totally intelligent!! You love the silence of the movie; and you love to hear conversation....a movie which says a lot both ways!!
