Memento (2000)
A clever, unique movie.
1st thing I've got to say is I'm a sucker for movies that are different than the typical movie. Most movies have recycled cliches and steal things from other movies that have been done previously.
Memento is unique in that it tells a large part of its story backwards. The main character, Leonard Shelby, has no short term memory, but despite that is trying to track down his wife's killer.
Momento confuses you at times since it jumps right into scenes that you have no idea as to how he got to that point. But as the movie moves backwards, things start making more sense and it actually can keep you in some suspense.
Momento isn't the normal straight-forward entertaining movie, and it will make you think. This movie could be annoying if you just want to get lost in a movie without actively thinking about things. I enjoyed the movie and I thought about it a lot for a couple days after seeing it.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
Drastically over-rated.
I acknowledge I'm not an avid Kung-Fu movie fan, so maybe thats part of why I didn't care for this movie and why I was so surprised this movie got rave reviews. To me, this is one of the most over-rated movies of all time.
The fight scenes are pretty well done, I suppose. But there's that little thing about the "law of gravity" that I just couldn't get over. At times, gravity was bent more than in The Matrix (which at least explains that they are indeed bending/breaking the law of gravity). Running up walls, or flying with their legs kicking like they are somehow propelling themselves with their legs just bugged me. If you disregard other things that are real about life, then you can make lots of other things cinematically pretty and fluid too. But its just not believable.
I found the plot pretty boring too. I didn't find anything "great" about this movie at all. I think a large part of the hype this movie received in the U.S. was just because its a foreign film that didn't totally suck. Kind of how some people just find foreign cars, foreign accents, foreign clothes, etc. exciting.
This movie wasn't awful, just not very impressive.
Traffic (2000)
Traffic Accident. (contains spoilers)
I am truly amazed at the hype this movie received and am even MORE amazed that it won Oscars. This movie was 'OK' at best, and that's being generous.
Other than the rare-occuring entertaining moment, this movie was slow, boring, hollow and little more than a documentary. I don't think there was much of a plot other than just watching what happens to drug dealers, drug users, and family members of both. The police officers of Mexico and the US were the only enjoyable characters to me.
I don't understand how some critics/movie goers are "moved" or "touched" etc. by this. Are we supposed to be surprised that drug dealers can be brutally killed and double-crossed in their business? Are we supposed to feel badly for the rich, spoiled kid who ends up being an addict with her other spoiled rich kid friends? Should we be shocked that when the Mexican police ends up playing around with drug lords that one ends up being killed? I just don't see much of any shock factor or anything that I'm supposed to feel sorry for. I did feel somewhat badly for the father of the addict. He was the only one that wasn't playing with fire before he got burned.
I found it VERY difficult to believe Catherine Zeta Jones's character. She is devastated that her husband is arrested for being a drug-lord, and has had no idea that he's been doing all of this for so many years as he has somehow hid all this from her. Then, some days later, she is orchestrating a murder of the Government's prime witness, as she is trying to run the cocaine business while her husband is in jail. Was I the only one that found this difficult to believe?
After seeing the Academy Award nominations, all I can conclude is that the Academy must be on drugs.
As Good as It Gets (1997)
Imperfection at its finest.
No hot models. No action heros. No 'sappy' unrealistic love story. No intricate plot with twists and turns. Just arguably the best movie of 1997.
How? Great acting and a great story. Sounds too simple?
Basically, they took some odd, flawed characters that have little to do with each other, and make a great movie by bringing them together through some very unique circumstances and poking fun at all of them, but bringing you closer to them as you go. Character development is a large part of the movie.
I laughed at several scenes and felt moved in others. The funny scenes weren't corny and the heart-warming scenes weren't sappy. This movie is different than the normal movie, which is a big plus. The cast and their acting makes it all work. Probably the best all-around movie of 1997 in my opinion.
The Avengers (1998)
Worst movie I've ever watched in a theater.
I'll start out with my only compliment.... I've seen worse.
But not by far. Did a bunch of elementary school children decide to make a movie? No... it might have been better if so. Every time I thought they were going somewhere with this movie, they went on to something else.
With the cast they had, this movie should have been infinitely better.
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Immature, childish and dumb. I loved it!
This type of comedy definitely isn't for everyone. This is very corny, but its SUPPOSED to be that corny, which is why some people will love this and others will hate it with few in between.
Lloyd and Harry are idiots who constantly tease, prank and make fools of themselves throughout the whole movie. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are perfect in these roles. If you like corny movies that are full of one-liners and laughs, this is the movie for you!
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Are animated movies SUPPOSED to be this good?
Sure. I like other animated movies too. But this one is DIFFERENT.
This movie is very good! Not just good as in "good-for an animated movie." I mean good as in, this movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture!
Great animation and music just add to the story. Beauty is not skin deep and love can see beneath exteriors. THAT is the message this movie tells, and its told with an extra magic that only Disney can bring.
The Wraith (1986)
Great looking car. Really bad movie.
It seems like they just wanted to make the movie just to have some cool scenes with the car. "Oh yeah, and we've better add some cheesey, no-brain plot around the car, just to make it a movie."
This was a bad movie. Great looking car, though, so I guess that was supposed to off-set the plot. It didn't work.
