Star Trek: Discovery: Unification III (2020)
When Star Trek's storylines become a little too preposterous...
Tilly is one of my favorite characters. It is preposterous she would become first officer at this point in her career/the series.
My girl is still an Ensign... there must be a so much that even a highly qualified ensign would need to be taught and trained on for a second in command position. Who has time to train someone new in a chaotic new time with all the problems the crew is facing? It is really unrealistic to just believe any ensign would know everything there is to know about commanding an entire crew/starship.
Not to mention that there were so many more qualified people with much longer careers at Starfleet, many of whom likely had dreams of commanding themselves. For everyone on the bridge to just so gladly accept her new, unjustified promotion was so unrealistic and unreasonable, it was actually off putting to me and many others I've talked to.
It was also a huge risk for a new Captain Saru, to let favoritism play into his promotion of Tilly...letting her walk all over other people on the ship that dedicated much more of their life to working up the ranks, while Tilly was allowed to surpass all of them for seemingly no real reason. The writers needed something more to do with her character and they took the lazy, unrealistic way.
It's the most annoying thing that's ever happened in any version of Star Trek in my opinion.
Velma (2023)
I wanted to like it.
I wanted to like it. I really did.
Scooby Doo was my favorite cartoon as a kid, I have probably seen every version of the series. Highlights for me include 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo, the original series, Zombie Island and Mystery Incorporated. I liked the 2 live action movies as well.
Unfortunately, this chaotic new series falls flat on its face. The humor is trying to be dark and edgy (Rick and Morty-ish vibes) but tries way too hard and comes across as clueless, aimless, out of touch with reality (which normally is fine for fiction...I don't even know how to describe it) and ill-thought-out. Some "jokes" from the first episode were absolutely not funny to any living human. It is not possible.
Honestly I was interested to see a series with a more diverse Mystery Incorporated but they have changed the personalities of these characters more than the color of their skin. It doesn't make sense.
No one wants you to radically change characters core personalities to the point they become new characters.
At that point make a new original series with original characters
I've always liked Velma and was down to see a story that focused on her primarily, but this new "Velma" is not "Velma". It is an entirely different character who has some Velma tropes. Besides that she is a rude, selfish, arrogant, know it all B-word who is somehow more confident in her younger years?? It doesn't make sense and isn't the Velma I've seen over and over. No one asked for these characters to have entirely new personalities. It's so weird.
And I like Mindy Kahling! I've seen her in some stuff where I thought she was really funny. Not to mention I LOVE Constance Wu, she is amazing.
Yet, I feel that their talent is being wasted on this dispassionate money grab. I can't imagine these actresses reading their scripts and being like "Yeah! People are going to love this!" ??????????
It's really too bad because I've been waiting for a darker, more mature take on the Scooby gang for years. From the trailer, I thought "Maybe Velma could be it". No.
If HBO was smart they would have adapted the highly acclaimed "SCOOBY APOCALYPSE" graphic novels from a few years ago instead of this mess of a show. I know that would have been a bigger success and resonated with audiences far better than "Velma". No question.
No one that made this series could have been an actual Scooby Doo fan. They don't know what actual Scooby fans want in a darker, more mature series.
I can definitely say this was one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had in a series.
Grimcutty (2022)
Sorry for Shannyn Sossamon
I checked out this film after seeing the bad reviews with an open mind. I am a huge fan of Shannyn Sossamon fan so I will watch anything with her in it, but she certainly couldn't save this convoluted film.
I can appreciate plenty of film and series that have received less than stellar reviews, but this was an obvious exception. Nothing about it is good. At times it feels preachy in an After School Special type of way. It's like the filmmakers want to but absolutely cannot commit to a commentary about youth and the digital age. The characters generally don't feel sincere and the cell phone-paranoid parents (even with a twist) are laughable.
As a huge Shannyn Sossamon fan, it is disappointing to say her first big film in many years is not only bad but her performance doesn't seem as committed as roles she had played in the past. I can see a sincerity from the lead Sara Wolfkind, but given the poor material presented here from the writer it's not surprising the acting is largely less than stellar.
Star Trek: Voyager: Before and After (1997)
Jennifer Lien is a great actress
While I love Seven of Nine, episodes like this make me sad Kes was replaced by her. Jennifer Lien is truly a great actress.
Kim's Convenience: Parking Pass (2021)
Unfortunately the series has lost a bit of its charm
It is still a good show but it seems a bit phoned in this season, mainly the storylines/writing and less so, sadly even the acting (maybe the actors just didn't have as much to work with/a couple of them have been vocal about being unhappy working on the show). While the other main characters still carry the show well, Jung out of nowhere only appearing via webcam (a trend that continues for most of this season) really makes the feel of the show different for the worse and the webcam sessions with Shannon and Kimchee feels forced and wastes valuable time of the episodes.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Statistical Probabilities (1997)
Easily one of the worst episodes of the entire series
The episode was truly one of the absolute worst episodes from any Star Trek series. I am shocked and uncomfortable with the fact that it has such a high rating. The genetically engineered humans were preposterous, unbelievable and extremely over the top. It is an unwatchable, forgettable, embarrassing and pointless episode. Not worth rewatching except for a good laugh
