The Ruins (2008)
Watch out: Badass Vines!
Last year I was in Mexico, visited a couple of ruins. Glad I didn't see this movie before!
Was this a master piece of horror movie history? Of course not. Was it anywhere realistic? Hell no. I mean, you all know this situation, you had to cut off your friends legs, and some pretty mean killer plant shortly after eats those legs. Well, you tell me: Would you move your legless friend somewhere else to spend the night?
OK OK, I'm drifting away. This movie was actually pretty good. Not very smart, but entertaining, funny and somehow interesting. You get involved, trying to figure out how you can escape from this freaking location.
I actually gave this movie more points then Inglourious Basterds, so that must mean something, right? If you haven't seen it (the Ruin one), go for it. If you don't like it, at least you have learned something new about plants.
Inglourious Basterds (2009)
Inglorious indeed
I didn't see Inglourious Basterds when it came out first. After the huge hype it received, I did decide to give it a shot, and ordered it on demand. What can I tell you, I was really disappointed. Yes, the movie was fun in some parts, but mostly just boring and superficial. I talked my girlfriend in to watching the movie with me. She felt asleep after the first hour... Can't blame her.
I applaud Tarantinos approach, making a wild west style WW2 movie. The music and certain shots created an interesting ambiance. Very enjoyable was also Christoph Waltz' acting. That said, I don't have more positive things to share about this movie.
The rest was as mentioned very superficial, unrealistic, and in certain scenes just plainly boring. Other reviews have mentioned the "table talks". Seriously, there were scenes where I was like "are you kidding me?". I felt like a kid, waiting for the grown-ups to finish talking. Of course as a kid I didn't have a remote control with a fast-forward button..
Would I watch this movie again? Absolutely not. Would I recommend it to anybody else? Not really. But seeing the rating it gets here on IMDb, maybe thats just me.... So go ahead, give it a try and make your own judgment. But don't say I didn't warn you.
The Cry of the Owl (2009)
Good movie, slightly underrated
I have never read the novel, nor heard of the movie. After reading some of the reviews here, I decided to give it a shot. And I have to say, I do not regret it.
This is a very dark movie with disturbed main characters, greatly acted by Robert Considine and Julia Stiles. This isn't your typical fast-paced Hollywood thriller. I consider this movie to be "different", the plot develops slowly and is very unpredictable, which makes it in my opinion very enjoyable.
I totally recommend this movie to anyone, who likes dramas / thrillers with a dark touch, and enjoys great acting.
I give it a 7 out of 10.
