Groundhog Day (1993)
The nature of time
Time is nothing more than that: one day after one day after another. The only thing that tells us we are not living the >same< day once and again is the fact that we preserve our memories. To make use of time passing is one great advantage the human race has. This movie helps to understand this concept and the nature of time itself.
A man who lives the same day, time and again, who has no consequences of his actions, who is trapped in time with no way out. He wishes he would be trapped in a different day, a day he would love to repeat once and again, but no, he is trapped in a common day, surrounded of people he barely cares about. He tries everything, even suicide. He also tries robbery, without fearing any consequences of his acts. He becomes extremely bored.
He feels totally unhappy... until he accepts the situation and decides to try something different. He starts doing things he's not used to, he suddenly wants to learn to play the piano, avoid other people's accidents, gain the heart of a woman he first didn't care about at all, but whom he got to know until he finally fell in love with.
It is this transformation and this love what pull him through time.
The same day repeats over and over, until he lives a perfect day. And even though it is only a few hours he has until the end of the day, he actually got everybody to love him, the woman he loves gives him all her admiration and respect, he makes lots of friends and he uses the time in such a productive way that it is almost impossible to believe one person can achieve so much in "just one day"... He has become one superior man, he has transcended time.
Only then he breaks the spell of time and time passes. He is no longer trapped in time, but he has learned to live now, from being an asshole he is now a great human being.
But is this not the actual nature of time as we know it? Is it not actually the same thing as in the movie? It is up to each individual what he/she decides to do with his/her time on Earth, but life could actually be something beautiful, regardless of any personal circumstances.
The Fountain (2006)
Nice thoughts and ideas bad transmitted
I could have liked this movie, but I am sorry to say that in the end I didn't, because it leaves room for various interpretations of its meaning and it doesn't maintain a structured story line. Many things are left open. The inquisitor for example, what does he have to do with the whole story, why the need of this figure? And at what point of time does the past become the present and then the future? This movie has the capacity to move things inside people because of the use of powerful symbols from Buddhism, Maya myths, Christianity and some New Age elements, what results in an exposed used of symbols and a mixture of things that aren't really connected to each other. It is a pity that great messages like the one of acceptance as the key to inner peace didn't find a better channel of expression and a better story telling. I don't discourage anyone to watch the movie, but I wouldn't recommend it either.
