Shōgun (2024)

Average show with quite a few unexplained gaps in the plot.
24 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Abrupt ending to the series. Without too many spoilers; there are time-jumps in the final episode between whats now the past and the present where we meet an old decrepit Blackthorn in his final days back at his home in England with his grandchildren marvelling at his worn and chipped katana. However theres no further development in the plot to how he gets back or when he does and how this scene is relevant to the events in Japan. Jump back to Japan, many of the major characters are dead and the story concludes with Toranaga preparing for the final battle against Ishido, with many developments left untreated such as Blackthorns canon training or why Toranaga granted plots to the Christian priests and courtesans in close proximity to each other, whether it was unwitting or a deliberatly plotted move.

Trigger Point (2022– )

Season finale was a disaster after a great build up.
12 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I almost couldn't watch this last episode. After a riveting 5 episodes, Lana is finally faced with the formidable group The Wave, A group smart enough to rig light sensitive explosives and secondary triggers pressure plates and other "advanced tech" according to Bomb Data Analysis expert Dr. Sonya Reeves, are holistically and hilariously dumbed down in this episode. They are suddenly dependent on Lana Washington to complete their final task, treating her as part of the group, revealing their plans to her and like. Their only insurance against her, holding her family hostage. It becomes so cliched at this point that it pilfers the entire buildup of the season at this final moment. It seems like the producers planned for a longer run this season but suddenly got a call to limit it to 6 eps and they had to rush to tie up the end regardless of whether it made sense. About the character development and methodology to police work, I wont even get there. An officer like the lead would have been fired on Day01 for insubordination. Thats how it works in the rea world and it couldn't be further from it here. Ill generously give it a 6 after this debacle of an episode.

Underwhelming series, to put it politely.
27 January 2024
When you pickle Dark, 100, Walking dead(minus zombies), you get La Brea.

Season 01 was okay, the CGI, not so much. The dialogues are mediocre, the acting too. Characters are poorly developed... only thing interesting is the core concept. S2, the first few episodes seemed to drag with evitable and unnecessary events pushing the storyline along and the usual family drama unfolding. Not to mention the circumstances surrounding people jumping through different times to and fro seemed pretty amusing when viewed macroscopically.

I also cant help wondering how prehistoric folk from 10,000 BC speak fluent english with an American accent. Not only that, they also seem pretty fluent with Western sensibilities and mannerisms of 2024. I would have thought language, vocabulary or communication itself wasnt as extensive in that era even if a few people from various springing to 10,000 bc. Im truly surprised this series lasted as long as it did.

Great start, the end, not so much.
17 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Final 2 episodes are too rushed after a decently paced first 5. Storyline starts off with drama, action, comedy, thrill, perforated with elements of suspense and tragedy in the middle. However the climax and conclusion turned out quite mellowed after the great build up. A few loose ends and unanswered questions remain unsolved or deliberately left open to the viewers interpretation of them.

Adult Eli alongwith the Shelley character undergoes a drastic transformation in later episodes suffering a continuity error, while all other characters remain unchanged including his brother supposedly a few years older than him and peer to Shelley.

Id definitely go for a season 2 if there is one, though I doubt there will be.

The Head
11 January 2024
A lot has been said already, about the movie, its duration and an extended cut around the corner. So Im going to talk very briefly only about the head - The Head. The head, was disappointing. Once the head is severed, it loses control of its voluntary facial muscles rendering it limp and gravity working itself on it. The eyelids droop, the eyeballs are not fixatedly looking on, but often wander around inside the orbit.

Depending on the angle the head is held aloft, the tongue may be seen sticking out and invariably, the lips are not shut but partly open. This Head, does not look dead by any stretch of imagination. It looks alive. I know, there exists evidence to suggest the brain is still alive post the deed, but its wholly unlikely That Head is capable of any form of cognitive function.

Berlin (2023– )

Looking for a worthy prequel? Look away.
5 January 2024
Except for about story worth 3 episodes total, the rest of the series is all about the groups romance, love interests, parties.. Just about everything that has nothing to do with a heist. This is as far removed from La Casa De Papel as it can possibly get except for one of its lead characters reprising his role and by episode 05 its gets tedious, painful even to follow its meandering, incoherent storyline.

The plot is shallow lacking depth and its evident from the numerous plotholes stemming from unrelated events and subplots branching away from the main, from stealing cars to aircrafts to members of the crew pairing off to steal their private vacations middle of the heist. Berlin borrows its name from its predecessor meant to serve as its prequel, but fails to live up to its hype and falls apart halfway into the series.

Season 05 - lot of plotholes, not that great
26 December 2023
Seasons 1&2 were great with all the certainty and the likelihood of the tide shifting in any direction. Season 4 was was good if the 'other' narrative could be ignored.

S05, well S05 is a mashup of incredible storytelling culminating out of goofs, deux ex machina and Mary Sue - a character with every imaginable odd stacked up in her favor coming out on top like the Nikki character in Season 3, except she is the only one leading unlike in S03 that had a plethora of characters playing their own part.

Also, the political conversation has always revolved between the left and right. Whats with the recent digs at libertarianism? I always knew them to be a small group, too small to be a part of any political debate. Is that still the case or has that all changed?

Disappointed
22 November 2023
Scenes of offices, breaking code, opening crates, dialogue exchanges, tearing up old family photos, evading a few bad guys under the most ridiculous of circumstances and plenty of jumping through timelines past to present, from 1957 to 2014 to the present. Basically your routine tv-show, but no action remotely happening that made the movies great. There is no Godzilla nor Titans to be seen except in the odd shot every now and then for a couple of seconds in a few episodes, just tracking them so to speak.

Watched the first 3 episodes, but seriously doubt it will get any better than this on a whole in future episodes and it gets really painful to watch the endless talking after all the expectations.

Quite well done
1 November 2023
Been waiting for an HD print for exactly 1 month and 15 days and i wasnt disappointed though it could have been better.

The movie isnt an abject skeptic's take on crime and mystery, but draws some vague elements from the supernatural that is left unaddressed in limbo, to the audience's imagination. All the characters play out their respective roles with elan with Branagh's character epitomizing the eternal skeptic, while Michelle's role eggs the viewer to cling on to belief in the beyond.

The climax where the mystery unravels to the master sleuth does incorporate elements of the deus ex machina, and though some segments of the story does appear a bit undercooked, but overall its totally watchable and thoroughly enjoyable.

Lackadaisical storytelling
30 October 2023
The stories, from both the US and Canada, are set in idyllic locations away from the hustle-bustle of city life that would appeal to a more mature audience in general, and viewers like me geared toward a more quiet setting.

The horror is a mix up of gore, human inflicted and the supernatural. Though its somewhat watchable, what makes it irritable is the constant switching between the mock interviews and the story narrated through flashbacks. Ideally perhaps, it would have been better suited if they started off with a short mock interview preparing the viewers for the story ahead, before delving into it without further disruptions, and finally concluding with the continuation of the interview to sum it all up.

Pleasantly well made
19 October 2023
I was pleasantly surprised to find this fairly well done despite its low budget. Most of the episodes barring one maybe two, are gripping, capturing the imagination of the audience, leading them on.

The ghosts though arent convincing enough, looking and feeling like actors playing the part. The dearth of effects and cgi perhaps telling, but it does impress with its eerie atmosphere that it creates. The office, or contemporary corporate setting set in stark contrast with the supernatural 'tickles' the audience's imagination.

The acting is good and the characters are well fleshed making the viewers feel for them and relate to them, though I hope they will deploy various other characters from ancient and modern folklore in future as the show progresses to more seasons.

No horror in here.
12 October 2023
Finished the movie in one go. Not because I loved it, but because I spent the entirety of it trying to find an iota of horror.

Note, the first 2 mins of the film can be deceiving and in stark contrast to the rest of the movie which focusses heavily, if not entirely on racial prejudice and slavery. The 'horror' bit is mostly limited to the title and viewers expectations.

At certain junctures in the film, one would even be forgiven for noticing a strong undercurrent of a vastly different storyline running parallel to the intended plot that has by now become wholly superficial to the extent it almost feels that the writer is pushing a certain narrative.

The Nun II (2023)

Not better than the fiirst.
10 September 2023
Only the main antagonist is a male. Else they removed all male presence from the film or reduced their screentime to a few seconds. Set in an all girls school, all the staff are women, the nuns, even the patron saint chosen is a female.

Twice one of the nuns calls upon God than the usual Jesus to drive away the demon. The lead's friend has no significant role except simply 'being there' that if she were not written in, there would have been no major impact to the storytelling - a role even though could have gone to anyone, the least attractive actor was chosen for it among a sea for more appealing ones.

The story itself lacks appeal compared to the first installment that was mediocre. Tessa is good in her role but the plot needed to be fleshed out more, building momentum lead to the climax. At certain points the starts to drag before suddenly picking off again. Overall, watchable if theres no other option.

The Wheel of Time (2021– )

Way off the target
2 September 2023
Anyone who has read the books will immediately spot this show has merely borrowed its name from the books and thats all there is to it.

The Aes Sedai in the original text are in no way the only major group but a part of several others. However the showrunners in their fervor to be misandrists powered down all the male characters and wrote off any than couldnt be. Just so that the women characters could be portrayed as powerful.

I found season 01 to be barely tolerable. But season 02 episode 2 onwards it became too much for me to put up with. I mean even in the pre-code era women were seldom as deprecated and bashed by men as this show does, and not only in its plotline, but the screentime in S02 shifts wholly toward the women even though their characters are not developed enough to make them agreeable to the audience. I have no clue what made Daniel Henney and others sign up for the show given the roles they would be required to essay, but I guess its best left to them to consider or re-consider.

End of the road
27 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
S01E01 - Look Sam Neill is in this, great! It about alien invasion. Ill watch this.

S02E01 - Sam Neill is dead. So are many of the male leads(if there were any). Now the shows few remaining male characters are all reduced to minions if not villains or totally written off.

But that not how the show began. Thats not how most shows begin - For All Mankind, Chucky, His Dark Materials to name a few. They start off the way people expect them to before the creators commence forcefeeding the audience a very specific narrative.

I was thinking of a time beyond 2017-18 when a series would be made and could be watched for the sheer thrill of it - A Series of Unfortunate Events, Carnivale, Band of Brothers, Dark, Fargo, Hemlock Grove, Penny Dreadful, Prison Break a few of many.

Archiving this. S02E01 is the end of the line for me.

Not exactly a comedy... least of all a sexcomedy
10 August 2023
Road Trip, Euro Trip, American Pie, Danish Tegn series, 40year old virgin and many more, are sex comedies. No Hard Feelings is NOT a sex comedy for what its worth.

Its watching a chockfull of emotional baggage being dumped by the lead characters within the first 30 mins of the film. The few funny dialogues that are few and far between are thwarted by the somber undertones pervading the movie throughout making it the least likely contender for the comedy genre.

A comedy, more so a sex comedy is supposed to be for fun viewing replete with humorous dialogues and awkward and funny situations. Whichever way the direction intended to proceed, when dark themes such as loneliness, estranged parents, forbidden romance is given preferential treatment from the start, it fails to live upto its expectations of a comedy.

Too loud
20 June 2023
Watched Kandahar 2 days ago. Last week, Ambush and last month, The Covenant. This movie feels like playing COD and you are up against a hilariously powered down lvl1 bots.

If this movie is all about shooting places up, then there are no beeeg guns to see. If about H2H combat, no stylized action scenes.

The storyline is too predictable, redone N times before. One moment, the lead is reminiscing his moments with his child, next moment he says - Im a killer. One of the characters is conflicted on where his loyalties should lie, next moment his confusion is dispelled thanks to a frivolous plot.

There's no character development, enough to endear you to the characters and there is no human factor in it that makes you feel empathy, positive or negative.

Movie is more set in the same universe as Kill Bill and John Wick(which I obviously skipped) than in Jake and Gerard's.

Great effects, poor plot
11 June 2023
The CGI is great given its an Australian film and not hollywood.

That said, the acting is bad. Cant really blame the kids though if the direction and editing falters too, which it does hilariously. Not only does the director fail to get his cast to put in some semblance of credibility, the editing dept too fails to get proper cuts in to keep the storyline fluid which inherently, also lacks depth and coherence.

The movie begins without any backstory or events leading up to the present, things start happening and before you know it, you are off riding on some creature's back(dragon?). In the end the story twists into an unexpected psychological tale wholly unrelated to preceding events. Basically its all an incredulous mix mashup of various stories told many times before only this time the director threw in everything into the stew all at once and forgot to stir the pot.

Bad editing in some crucial places.
7 June 2023
The film begins in the middle of the action and the events building up to it are narrated to the audience over the course of a single dialogue exchange between the general and the captain. 10-15min invested on that through visuals would have definitely helped.

Though the core plot of tunnel warfare is nothing new, the story nonetheless is not gripping. The screenplay is also equally lacking and at places especially toward the end, it falls apart failing to keep viewers on the edge. Even the editing at the end becomes wayward with unnecessary cuts that's immediately obvious. Acting is decent and its only the likes of Eckhart that impede this movie from becoming another forgettable B-Grade school project.

Great visuals but lacking a storyline.
15 May 2023
Movie exceeds all the CGI anyone can possibly expect, but the storyline fails to overwhelm the audience. Id say 70% of the film is about family bonding and descriptions of culture on Pandora. Had it been on Discovery or Nat Geo, itd have been awesome. But thats not what people going in to watch the movie would want to see in a 3 hr movie.

The action starts out at the beginning and in the end with detailsed description of the life of the Naavi comprising the major chunk of the film in the middle.

Personally I was unable to sit through the movie in one go. Finished it in 3 sittings while skipping through many scenes I felt were totally unnecessary.

Brought back the memories...
26 March 2023
I was a little kid when I watched the BBC production of GE for the first time. Actually my grandad(passed last year) watched it and I caught bits and pieces of the show as I played with my toys close by, and some of the pieces remain etched in my mind even now. I remember the scene where estella slaps pip, pips first encounter with Magwitch. I think there was also a scene in the series finale where an adult Estella and Pip walk through the gates of Havisham's home, and a line said by Estella at the end "I think we are friends now...".

That, is my memory of Great Expectations. The one star rating, is for this version replete with diversity, but lacking substance that would fail to create any lasting memories in anyone's mind.

The direction and the plot fails.
24 January 2023
I'm usually a fan of Norwegian film but this one makes an exception. The dubbing isn't professional. The acting and the characters lack depth, the story and direction both lack congruity, begging the question if its an amateur director at work here.

When narrating a story through different people, a decent amount of caution must be taken to ensure the plot retains its coherence. Unfortunately it fails here. This is further amplified through the very myopic screenplay that it ends telling the stories of the bombs that fell, the people that spoke, the vast fields of snow and the occasional glimpses of a few ships at sea, and none of the war that raged.

Excellent show cant stop watching
22 January 2023
After GOT there was Stranger things for me. But it couldn't hold my attention nor interest past season 2. I used to keep thinking I'm outgrowing Tv shows, that is, till I started watching Servant. I hadn't heard people talk of it much so I gave it a passing chance and boy, I binged it for 3 days days straight. All 3 seasons, right up till S04E02!

The episodes are rather short at <30mins, but I wasn't bored. Tbh I did feel the show dragged a bit from S03 eps 1-3 but it quickly caught up. What Ive come to realize through bitter experience is that shorter episodes do not mean a show is lacking. It only indicates it may be bereft of the usual bunkum that other shows may come preloaded with. After all a large vessel by itself is not conclusive evidence that its full.

I found the characters all human, capable of experiencing fear, pain, misery, anger, defeat, failure, self-loathe... no Mary sues or Marty stus devoid of negative human sentiments, ever eager to punch their way out of every problem, and a quick scroll through my rating history will reveal I'm not quick to rate any show high without picking on flaws that I find glaringly evident.

This show too isn't flawless like any other. But its flaws do not overshadow nor impede the flow of the central plot. Unlike other shows I've seen in the recent past, the characters do not undergo any core transformation to become someone wholly different from what they started out to be, with the only exception being Sean transforming from the critic of all things around to someone experiencing change in his beliefs which is a direct ramification of the incidents around shaping him. Dorothy too keeps changing but that's how the character was written out to be, a troubled woman constantly fighting her own demons stemming from her own inability to recount a morbid occurrence from the near past.

One thing that stood out above all, was the wine. I've now seen more wine in these 3 seasons than on any other show in the last ten years put together.

Already completed Ep2 of Season 4 and Im already waiting for the next ep to drop.

Good for its moneys worth
7 December 2022
I get this show doesnt encompass certain values of the democrat type. This show isnt about the social contract and living off state benefits. It doesnt uphold self-effacing benevolence and altruism, but epitomizes property rights, protecting your own by any means necessary, minding your own business and wanting to be left alone.

With this in mind, its easy to gather why it appeals to some and not to others being antithetical as it is, to liberal values and if you find this repugnant, you'd do yourself a favor by staying away.

As for for me, I loved this show however as the seasons progressed, I found the antagonists more custom made to suit the strengths of the main characters who could beat them easily. In some way it became a bit predictable. Perhaps some shock value and some uncertainty would help spice up the show even more, bringing in more audiences than there is.

Unlike Marvel, DC is comparatively dark. But after Seasons 1 & 2, it gets pretty boring with most episodes involving talking, driving around in cars, getting out of cars, planning, fist fights behind closed doors and then more talking.

The scale of the action is not too enticing. It might have been more interesting if the TV shows, which may be on a more limited budget, served as prop for the big film releases, building up the story arc and concluding with the films. As standalones and often distinctly demarcated from films, and without enough budget to rival the movies, it might fail to latch on to viewers interests for long. Then there is the recasting of established characters with diversity, which garners a separate telling of its own.
