(true) Strong Relatable Female!

Warning: Spoilers
Not a heavy spoiler review, but may contain some slight important details that might spoil the plot for you if you haven't finished the series.

Review...

K-Drama rulez!!!! Very very very impressed by this!!! Was a bit skeptical at first about our female lead, but quickly grew to like and loooove her. All four female historians are great. Two of them serve more as comic reliefs, but not forced. They are really likable. I wish I had a group like that to share drinks with after a days work. Apprentice Sung (apprentice; as they are called with english subtitles) was a bit unlikable at first. But after her scenes with the Crown Prince (regent king also) I realized she's not just a 2 dimensional character. Great character development.

The actor playing prince Dowon or Doo Woon (Lee Rim or Yi Rim) is amazing!!! Wow!!! This boy conveys the right emotions!!! His scene with the Dowager Queen in one of the later episodes was amazing. (Don't want to leave spoilers, but his scene with the Queen about his SPOILER, true heritage; beautiful!!!)

And now we come to our female lead; Goo Hae-Ryung. At times she seemed wooden, but I'm guessing its the way the character is meant to be. That's what I liked about her. She's different than what we are used to in the females from most k-drama period piece. At first, I couldn't stand her. Part of the reason why I really enjoy k-Dramas is because trough them I can experience TRUE escapism from our current state of affairs. It seems nowadays that every new film or tv-series (ESPECIALLY DISNEY, GAWD!!!) is laced with political propaganda (forced down out throats) in the form of feminism, race, sexism, gender identity, etc.

So naturally, at first when I realized our main heroin was going down the road of western style strong female representation, I was this close to turn off the series and bolt. Thankfully I gave it fair chance. And to my surprise, she is now one of my favorite characters of all time!!! This is how you depict a strong woman. Not the way the western culture (AGAIN, MORE SPECIFICALLY, DISNEY) is portraying them. This is a strong character. She's a woman living in a society where they really don't have a say in most things, if anything. She's intelligent, strong and at the same time she has to show submission (as all subjects, males included) to higher authorities. An example, I love the contrast shown between her first encounter with the prince, at the time not knowing he was actually a prince and her encounter with the Crown Prince (regent King). She came off somewhat arrogant when talking to the prince (again, thinking he was just any other nobleman) but when addressing the king she showed the proper respect. Again, this makes for a compelling character. On the one hand, she feels like she has to stand up for herself living in a world govern mostly by men, but at the same time she knows when and where she can pick her battles. Because lets face it, It must have indeed been difficult for a woman to live back then. For men also, but mostly for women (not getting to choose a proper career and not having a choice when it came to marriage) She wants to become a historian, but society expects something entirely different for her. So in a way, this series was *her* journey.

Again, this is how you properly depict a strong female character rather than what Disney is doing nowadays. In short, a strong woman is a person who fights for fair and equal chances in a world govern by men, and when the time calls for it, works *alongside* (not against) those men to accomplish greater things, and *not* the way Hollywood is showing us, namely by crushing males every chance they get (Admiral Holdo, Ruby Rose Batgirl, female Doctor Who, the treatment Loki received from most female characters in *his* series, the treatment Clint Barton Hawkeye received in *his* series, etc.)

Good job K-drama. I really hope you continue to deliver good shows like this to the world, yes the world. Your main audience may be Korea, but I tell you, you got my attention as a westerner. Great stuff. I also recommend, Yeonmo (2021), Baekilui Nanggoonnim (2018) (100 Days My Prince), Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo (2017) (My Sassy Girl) and Wang-i doin nam-ja (2019) (The Crowned Clown; my God, another great series!! Loved the actor that played the dual role of the clown/king who also stars in Hotel Del Luna (2019)). Honorable mentions are; Lee Ji-hoon as officer Min (my God that backstory about his deceased wife, tearsss), Park Gi-woong as Crown Prince Yi Jin, who also played a small yet imposing part in the Yeonmo (2021) and Geon-woo Ji as apprentice Sung Seo Kwon.

Lord in Heaven...
6 November 2021
ALMOST turned it off after the eyeball popped out; ALMOST...

Then,....

...a-few-moments-later......

TURNED-IT-OFF after the guy ACTUALLY cut of the hanging eyeball!!! Really, that bad. I don't really remember at what minute mark this eyeball thing happened but its safe to say that I really don't know how this movie ends. So I cant say if it progressively got worse or better (Well, I can take a guess...)

As you can see, this is not an actual review (A review would require the individual to actually finish the film/movie/episode/book, etc.)

So, feel free to honestly abuse the "Was this review helpful?" button at the end of this "review".

I just hope this little review of sorts spares you from this movie. Literally do anything else with your precious time, which is in short supply these days.

Final note: I really do hope to see actress Lulu Wilson in future projects. She showed promise. Its not her fault the script was horrible.

Invasion: The King Is Dead (2021)
Season 1, Episode 4
4/10
Nobody Said it Better Than Bilbo Baggins...
29 October 2021
I feel like nobody is addressing the elephant in the room. That's why all those reviewers of those "positive" reviews are ranting at the ones leaving a negative review.

So, if I may, allow me to play the devil's advocate here;

The main problem of this show (thus far, 4 episodes in) is not that it is super slow, lack of actual Alien invasion, too much drama, boring, boring, boring japanese segment, wife that totally belongs in a lifetime movie deals with cheating husband, etc. No, the problem is that this show has been falsely advertised as being a Sci-Fi show.

This is the premise of the show, and I quote from IMDb's main page for this series:

"Earth is visited by an alien species that threatens humanity's existence. Events unfold in real time through the eyes of five ordinary people across the globe as they struggle to make sense of the chaos unraveling around them."

Of course, when you look at the genre, it says, DRAMA, FANTASY, SCI-FI. We are used to sci-fi shows of this combination. Usually it means more sci-fi, a little fantasy and the drama part is suppose to be there for developments and to make the characters more relatable; be it plot, characters, life changing events, etc. Think a sci-fi TV-show/Movie that has to deal with politics for example, (Dune, Foundation, The Expanse, to name a few) not just mindless shoot'em up. So, we need the drama.

Having said that, this show leans too much into the drama part. It's a drama show that has like 3% sci-fi element. Again, a drama show in itself is not necessarily bad. However, this show was marketed as SCI-FI, was sold on the fact that IT-IS-A-SCI-FI-SHOW! So naturally the GROUP IT TARGETS (or at the very least DRAWS), is a group that wants to see a SCI-FI show. A group that watches shows like Resident Alien (2021), The Expanse (2015), Falling Skies (2011), Altered Carbon (2018), The Mandalorian (2019), Foundation (2021) (FOUNDATION also entices quite the hate, but not from me. I like it. Say what you will about FOUNDATION, at least its more sci-fi than this!!!).

This group is not interested in a drama show. I'm switching to my perspective now; I'm not interested in TV-Drama. The genre that is. So when I choose what to entertain myself with, I completely omit only Drama Television ala Titanic, The Crown, etc.

No one is saying they want to just see mindless Alien Invasion that leans heavily into explosion and heavy artilleries firing at anything that moves ala Transformers! Or dismemberment of people, brains flying all over the place!!! We don't need that! Though the mob of the positive reviews sure make it seem like anyone who doesn't remotely like this show is part of that group that also enjoy the endless Halloween movies where Mike Myers is basically stronger than Thor and Hulk combined!!! No, all we are saying is we want what we came here to see: a decent Sci-Fi show and so far INVASION has failed to deliver.

Anyways, in conclusion: This show, is not inherently bad. The problem is the targeted group it drew under false pretense of being a Sci-Fi show, when in reality its just an ordinary drama show that deals with real life issues, laced veeeeeeeeeeeery thinly with a wee bit of Sci-Fi (the Sci-Fi, thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread; the DRAMA.... Bilbo Legendary Baggins!!!)

American Horror Story: The Future Perfect (2021)
Season 10, Episode 10
5/10
So, no payoff then...
21 October 2021
Well, that was a waste.

This season was a complete waste.

One recurring thing I've notice throughout AHS' run is that the season starts of interesting but then they lose you about halfway through. It's as if they grab you and pull you in at the start, then let go, like they loosten the grip. Only season that was watchable all the way through the end was S9, AHS 1984. (well in my opinion at least...)

This one was no different. The vampire one started of great. It had a mystery sorounding it. You were pulled in. You wanted to know what was going on. Then, pooft. Everything went down the drain.

Now, we have the Alien segment. Started of ok, took a downward curv in the second episode, hit rock bottom in the third, and well, what's below rock bottom? This episode. The end was empty. It's not bad to have bad endings. The vampire segment had a bad ending, but still it felt like a conclusion. A bad conclusion of a good segment, but a conclusion nonetheless. This one, the conclusion to the Alien segment had nothing. Nada!!! No payoff.

It's as if the writers have trouble creating a proper ending to a story.

In any case, this season was a waste. I'm not saying goodbye to AHS. But I really hope they do better with future projects. And, please, please, please; keep those dumb horrible screenplays (including but not limited to those young untalented actors...) for the reject spinoff, American Horror Stories (2021) the PENAL COLONY so to speak, as it seems like this one was a dump for all their earlier failed ideas that never left the editing floor.

5 stars for Season 10, Episode 07, 08, 09 & 10 for the performance alone of all the Black and White segments actors who did a fine job with what they were given. Kudos to Neal McDonough and Craig Sheffer for playing presidents Eisenhower and Nixon respectively.

P. S: I'm kinda the oddball here since my favorite season of AHS is still S9, 1984 baby. I'm guessing it has more to do with 80's nostalgia. Cheers.

Warning (II) (2021)

What did I just watch .....
16 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
No, really. WTH!? What was the point. Usually when watching crappy semi-anthology pieces meshed up together in one movie like this, there is a pay off in the end. This one, nada!!! Like seriously, NOTHING!!! The only segment the felt like it was going somewhere was the one with Garance Marillier. But then it fell flat. And don't even get me started with the one with the chick from Big Sky (2020) and Legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger's son, Patrick Schwarzenegger. What happened between them before all that VR segment? And what was that one segment with one of our best Sherlock Holmes after Jeremy Brett, actor Rupert Everett about? What a wasted potential there. And that segment with Alice Eve?

Anyways, I could go on and on about it; this would have worked best as a limited mini series; each episode covering one of the segments and even then, it would at the very least be near the level of mediocracy of American Horror Stories (2021) Don't waste your time on this. 100% agree with the review from user contactmaz.

1 star just for the visual effect, which were surprisingly good and 1 star for the acting also, which was not bad at all.

Big Sky: Wakey, Wakey (2021)
Season 2, Episode 1

Please writers, do something to make Jenny and Cassie more likable...
15 October 2021
From most of the reviews here I gather that many of you don't remember Ronald telling Jenny (or Cassie, don't quite remember) that Rick has a twin brother. Seriously, check that season one finale again. The writers already laid the foundation for season two in last season's finale.

As for Jenny and Cassie being unlikable, I totally agree with the rest of you. I find it difficult, and I mean really difficult to root for them as protagonists. Really, there was a point in season one that I thought Jenny was gonna die and I was glad. I think if your audience can't root for your protagonist/s, than you as a writer have failed miserably. I get that to make a compelling character, you have to give them some negative, or for lack of better words, less appealing traits (like Jon Snow for example; sometimes we want to punch him in the face for some of the dumb choices he makes, but still we root for him when he's charging against Ramsay Bolton, or Boromir, he tried to take the ring from Frodo yet we still feel sad when he's laying there full of arrows saying his last words), otherwise we'll complain about them being too perfect, like Rey Skywalker or Captain Marvel to name a few. But I just can't find those redeeming qualities in Jenny and Cassie. My gawd and don't get me started on those Sullivan sisters.

But I do have hopes for this series, just not high hopes. 5 stars for the series as a whole thanks to Jesse James Keitel who plays Jerrie. This is a compelling character. One far from perfect, but one we can sympathize with.

Desaster Movie...
22 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know where to start with this. This movie is not for everyone. This movie tries to fit so many genres at the same time and fails miserably because of this. It's like the movie is a parody of itself!!! At one point it felt like watching one of those parody movies (Scary Movie, Epic Movie, etc.) that was parodying Final Destination (that scene where a character jumps of a plane or that one where the same character jumps into a grinder!!!) I dunno.

Then there's the science behind of it, or rather, lack thereof. Just a mess of a movie.

If you liked the first one and wanted to continue the story, stay away from this trash. Just treat the first one as standalone with a satisfactory ending where the story pretty much concluded.

If you just want to watch a silly movie on an evening with friends with chips and beer, this is your thing. (That mid-credits scene was Predator-2018-bad though...)
