Hansel, Gretel i Agentstvo Magii (2021)
"Borrowed" too many things?
So, nobody thought this was full of ripped off characters?? I'm perplexed.
First of all, the movie in general, is colourfull, chaotic and (to me) pretty boring, but well animated.
Sadly it seems the animators themselves where not very good actors, wich together with the voice acting makes the characters overact and unbelievable at many points in the movie.
The two main characters are mostly annoying, and gretel is quite the selfrightious snob, that just drones on about how her brother betrayed the family.
I sure hope the creators of this movie asked permition from disney and others for borrowing their characters, as i saw so many possible copyright infrigments that i lost count.
I'll name just a few;
* When arriving at the lake witch's lair, hansel and gretel are suspected to be spies, and threatened to be turned into fish. These fish have a really strong resemblance to the fish oscar in "shark tale"
* The cupcakes seem to be exact copies of the minions from "despicable me", only turned into cupcakes. They make the same jokes, act the same and sound the same.
* Now, i know not everything can be called copyright infrigment, like the brothers grimm, and their stories, as far as i know everyone is allowed to use them as the copyright either died with the brothers themselves or expired long since. I also think that the story "the beauty and the beast" itself falls under that same catagory, (same with the goose's golden egg, the hamer of thor and many other little cameo's from other stories, but depending on how you present certain parts of the story, it can still be a copyright thing. The pedestal with the rose, i believe was described in the story, so I'll give that one a pass, but im not too sure abt the little cup, i think "chip" might be Disney's own original interpertation, and therefore copyrighted. Now, granted this little cup has no chip missing, but to me it felt realy obvious.
Dont get me wrong, i like it when stories incorparate little nods to other stories. Its just that here they felt less like nods and more like copies.
I am no copyright expert, nor claim to be (besides that's realy complicated and mostly vague stuff, with not always a straight answer) i was just a bit shocked at the multitude of moments where i was like "hey, this is from this movie, and that is from that one" that i couldn't believe my eyes when i saw hardly anyone had mentioned this in their reviews.
Overall i did like the idea of taking an old and beloved tale and giving it an completely different and new origins story.
With better acting and an a little less chaotic storyline, giving gretel a chill-pill and relying less on cliché and other peoples work, this wouldn't be such a bad movie at all.
As it stands i can't give it more then 5 stars, and those only because i feel like maybe the realy young children might still like this, if, they can manage to sit trough the whole 2hours it takes
Definatly not for grown-ups.
Star Trek (2009)
did not expect it, but definitely did like it.
Just like there are "coffee drinkers" and "thee drinkers", like there are "dog lovers" and "cat lovers", I guess there have always been "Star trek lovers" and "Star wars lovers". I am neither a hater, nor fan of either but if I had to chose, I would have to go for star wars. Having that said, for some reason this movie ended up in my watch-list. The only criteria, for choosing this movie over others in this list, was that I wanted a long, action movie, and so tonight, I went out on a limp ;) and sat down for this two hour adventure, with no expectations. Well, I was not disappointed, if anything, I was pleasantly surprised. The action, I got it, and then some. Two hours, gone in a flash. A lot of familiar faces, visually believable and beautiful even when watching on-line. It does not have the "old" (or "nostalgiq" for fans, I guess) feeling to it, in stead it's fresh, yet it does have all the familiar factors in it, so that even I (someone who has maybe seen 10 episodes in my life)can relate it to Star trek. To me, it's definitely better, than the average satisfying movie, hence an eight.
Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)
Not bad, not bad at all! :D
If you have played and loved the game(s) of Resident Evil, than this is a must watch. There is not really much story, but to me it has the right feel to it and that matters, I didn't watch this movie or played the games for the story. Well, OK, just a little bit, but even so, the lack of story didn't bother me at all. It's motion capture animated. The only thing on this movie that could use some improvement is the moving of the lips when someone is speaking, it's like they mumble (the movement) but the voice you hear does articulate (the lips don't) Oh, and off course when you're used to have this story told to you over the duration of multiple hours (in the games) then this movie feels way to short, especially when you liked it. ;)
The Last Airbender (2010)
Could have been so much better.
OK, so first of all, I have wanted to see this movie for quite some time now. Now I finally have seen it, I don't know what to think of it.. At the beginning I thought it was bad acting, but aside from the fire king and his first hand general, the acting got better, up to pretty good even for some characters. So if not the acting then what? The special effects where good, good enough anyway. And the story is interesting for it is based on the animation series, which I haven't followed, but seen enough episodes to like it (not the Dutch DUB! that one is a pain!!) The real problem with this movie, I think, is the lack of impact and tension. The fight scene's are beautiful but they are not exiting. No BOOM, in your face! more like whoosh, float, slomotion. Ah! and I do like slomotions in a fight, IF used right, not like this. In my opinion, if you put a decent sound-effects track on this, it would make a great movie, but there isn't so a six for me, and that is way higher than the average rating on IMDb.
