A League of Their Own (1992)
A Great Tribute
I am watching this movie for a history through film class. We are watching to see what it was like for women playing baseball in the 40s. For them it was a big deal to get into the hall of fame because at the time there were no women in the hall of fame. When they were chosen to be in the championship they were extremely excited because this was there one chance to get into the hall of fame. It was really cool when they came back to the fields when they were older and saw how much it had changed. It was kind of sad to see the head coach dead at the end because of how much he helped the team.
Cinderella Man (2005)
Classic Boxing Thriller
I am watching this movie for a history through film class. We are watching this to see what it was like for families in the great depression. This movie is set in the great depression. The movie is about a boxing star that is struggling to get keep his family throughout the great depression. The movie starts off before the great depression and he is making a lot of money boxing. When the depression comes he is kicked out because of a broken hand, but he starts fighting again. He fights for the top heavyweight champion in the world and becomes famous. You can tell that it's set in the great depression because there are people living in the streets and there huge lines at relief centers. I really enjoyed the fight scenes in this movie. They were very thrilling and suspenseful. I also liked how they portrayed to moral of never giving up. Even though his hand was broken, he did what he had to do to support his family during a rough time.
I really enjoyed this movie as a whole and is definitely one of my favorites now. I really connect to the moral of never giving up and i think it's a really good thing to convey to people. Especially through a great story like this. I enjoy a lot of boxing movies but this is one of the best i have seen. The entire movie is not just about boxing and there is more of a story behind why he is doing it.
Wonder Woman (2017)
Great action movie but not a history film
If you are looking for a movie accurately describing the events of World War 1 then this is not it. It is an amazingly good action film but is not very historically accurate. I'm not sure why we are watching this in a history through film class but i'm not complaining. Although the movie does not portray the events it gives great lessons about war and the temptations of mankind. The action scenes throughout the movie are thrilling and fast paced. I really enjoyed the scene where Wonder Woman is battling Ares and when she is rushing across no man's land deflecting all the bullets with her wrists. The special effects in the movie were also amazingly realistic. I was very intrigued by the effects they used for the island that was separated from the rest of the world.
Far and Away (1992)
Wild West Movie or a Comedy?
I am watching this movie for a history through film class. We are watching it to see what the land rush was like in America.
The story is about 2 people from very different living classes in Ireland running away to America to participate in a land rush in Oklahoma to get some free land. The filmmaker is telling a love story while also showing the history of America and making it funny. It shows how America was very open to immigrants and giving them the tools to help America's economy grow. I think it is a very cool story and was put together very well.
I really liked how Joseph became a boxer to get money to help them move west. I like how it puts a hint towards fighting movies and how motivational they can be. The land rush was also very fun to watch. Seeing all the new Americans racing to get their own land to start a new life really brings out the patriotism and a better liking to your country. I especially enjoyed how much comedy they squeezed into the movie. Just because you're making a historical movie doesn't mean it has to be serious and boring. This movie shows that you can put a little comedy into anything.
Overall i think this movie was very good. I have a very short attention span, so the fact that this movie kept me focused means whoever made it is doing a good job. I enjoy learning about history but not when it's dull and boring. This movie does exactly what i want by teaching a history lesson while also using an interesting story and lots of comedy her and there. I would love to see more history movies done like this one and i think it would make people more interested in learning about history through movies.
In the Heart of the Sea (2015)
Thor is a good leader
I am watching this movie for a history through film class. I think this movie is much more enjoyable then any other movie we have watched so far.
The movie is all about how the novel "Moby Dick" was written. I'm not sure if the book was actually written this way or if they show it this way to be more entertaining.
Most of the movie is a flashback of the youngest crew member of the whaling ship. This makes the movie a little confusing but it' not hard to understand. The young boy, who is no longer young, explains to a writer the events that unfolded upon the Essex whaling ship.
I really enjoyed the acting of Mr. Chase, the first mate of the ship. In the movie he was portrayed as a very strong leader and wise individual. He used his knowledge to keep everyone alive and safe during the dangerous events.
Johnny Tremain (1957)
Emotionless
I am watching this movie for a history through film class. We are watching it to see what they were trying to convey to Americans in 1957.
The movie makes me question its historical accuracy a lot because the characters are very emotionless. During the battles they react very calmly to people dying. They are very small battles and they don't last very long.
I liked that the movie was trying to make the viewers feel patriotic although they didn't do a very good job. They did a good job with the costume wardrobe and the setting. I liked the old houses they had in the setting.
The characters in the movie had little to no emotion. They tried to show that the girl liked Johnny but you could hardly tell because the actors showed almost no emotion. The militia fighters in the war had very slow reaction times and sometimes no reaction at all. Even when Johnny burnt his hand in the silver his reaction was very dull.
The New World (2005)
Almost historically accurate.
I am watching this movie for a history through film class. We are watching it to see how historically accurate films are.
The filmmaker is trying to tell the story of Pocahontas and John Smith. The movie surrounds their relationship and how it caused war and forgiveness between the settlers and the naturals. When the settlers first come into contact with the naturals there is much confusion. A small war starts when John Smith takes Pocahontas to Jamestown and is accused with "stealing" their princess.
The way the English settlers dressed and the way they built Jamestown shows the time period the story takes place in. They build their walls around Jamestown out of raw uncut wood. The naturals also show how long ago this was. They live in huts made of wood and leaves. Their technology is very behind because they use fires inside of their homes for warmth.
This movie made me question it's historical accuracy because every story of Pocahontas is different and no one really knows the true story. I'm not sure that John Smith would have been able to teach Pocahontas English that easily. I also don't think that many naturals would have been taken to England with them.
I did not notice any connections to other movies in the film. The only thing i noticed was that their love story was similar to the Disney cartoon version.
Three things i liked about the movie was the camera work, the setting, and the accuracy of their clothes. The camera work was very beautiful because it was very smooth and flowing. The setting the movie was shot in was very beautiful. There was lots of trees and water. The clothes they wore were very accurate to the time period.
Le voyage dans la lune (1902)
More action than most movies
I am watching this movie for a history through film class. We are watching it to see what it would be like to watch a movie in the 1900s.
The main plot of the film is astronomers going to the moon. They create a space capsule and are shot to the moon. They meet a race of aliens and get captured. They escape and kill the alien leader in the process.
You can tell the movie is old because it is in black and white and there is no sound. The special effects are surprisingly good for the era but not up to date. The camera quality is extremely choppy and low quality. They see the moon completely different from how we do today.
3 things i liked
The non-believers when they are discussing the plan
When they get to the moon it is rocky and full of life
There is a lot of action while escaping the planet
I didn't like that the camera was very close and was not capturing all of the action
I think the movie had a very good story and lots of action. I liked it because i thought it was very interesting how they thought the moon would look like. There was some cool fight scenes of the astronomers fighting the aliens when they were escaping the planet. I would like to see another movie by the same director to see how much special effects he incorporates into other films he makes. I would also like to see if the technology used to make the films gets better over time.
