1. Anbe Sivam (2003)

Not Rated | 160 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Two men, one young and arrogant, the other damaged - physically but not spiritually - by life, are thrown together by circumstances, and find that they are in some ways bound together by fate.

Director: Sundar C. | Stars: Kamal Haasan, Madhavan, Kiran Rathod, Nassar

Votes: 25,325

This is a very powerful movie. The main character (and good guy) is a Marxist, but he takes a capitalist idiot under his wing and preaches love and moral goodness to him. Funny when you aren't crying. I'm not necessarily a fan of the theology expressed, but the actions are great. Which is, perhaps, part of the point of the movie.

2. Mullum Malarum (1978)

Not Rated | 143 min | Drama

A boorish villager butts heads with a newly appointed engineer from the city.

Director: J. Mahendran | Stars: Rajinikanth, Sarath Babu, Jayalakshmi, Shoba

Votes: 966

I was impressed by this. It does not feel like a 1978 movie at all because of the level of realism in the character. Both our hero (Rajnikanth) and his boss are real people, good people with flaws, and their misunderstandings of each other are within the realm of the believable.

3. Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000)

151 min | Drama, Romance

An Indian adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility" focusing on two sisters of opposing temperaments.

Director: Rajiv Menon | Stars: Ajith Kumar, Tabu, Mammootty, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Votes: 3,592

This is a very pretty movie, nicely done. Where I began to see the difference between Tamil and Hindi choreography.

4. Kannathil Muthamittal (2002)

Not Rated | 136 min | Action, Drama, War

A little girl is told by her parents that she is adopted. Determined to find her real mother, she begs to be taken to Sri Lanka, where her mother works with a militant group of activists.

Director: Mani Ratnam | Stars: Keerthana Parthiepan, Simran, Madhavan, Nandita Das

Votes: 9,228

Probably the first Tamil movie I ever saw.

5. Abhiyum Naanum (2008)

Not Rated | 147 min | Comedy, Drama

The father of a grown daughter meets the father of a toddler at a playground and recounts the story of his own relationship with his daughter through the years, including his difficulties with accepting her marriage.

Director: Radha Mohan | Stars: Prakash Raj, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwariyaa Bhaskaran, Ganesh Venkatraman

Votes: 1,573

The father of a grown woman meets the father of a toddler, and spills his guts. A nice, and gentle movie.

6. Alai Payuthey (2000)

Not Rated | 156 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

After a difficult romance in a class-divided society, the love birds find out marriage is not what they thought it would be.

Director: Mani Ratnam | Stars: Madhavan, Shalini, Swarnamalya, V. Natarajan

Votes: 7,366

This was a very nice romance with almost believable complications.

7. Roja (1992)

137 min | Drama, Romance, Thriller

A woman from a village in Tamil Nadu marries a sophisticated city dweller and moves with him to Kashmir, where all is rosy - until he gets kidnapped by militants.

Director: Mani Ratnam | Stars: Arvind Swamy, Madhoo, Pankaj Kapur, Nassar

Votes: 13,720

A Kashmir terrorism story, or more accurately, a romance played out against a background of Kashmiri terrorism.

8. The Terrorist (1998)

Unrated | 95 min | Drama

68 Metascore

A young female terrorist goes on a suicide assassination mission, but her resolve to complete it is put to the test.

Director: Santosh Sivan | Stars: Ayesha Dharker, K. Krishna, Sonu Sisupal, Vishwas

Votes: 2,041 | Gross: $0.14M

This movie puts a human, if not an entirely believable, face on terrorism.

9. Nayakan (1987)

Not Rated | 145 min | Crime, Drama

A common man's struggles against a corrupt police force put him on the wrong side of the law. He becomes a don, who is loved and respected by many, but his growing power and influence exact a heavy toll.

Director: Mani Ratnam | Stars: Kamal Haasan, Saranya Ponvannan, Delhi Ganesh, Janakaraj

Votes: 23,004

It took me a while to get past the difficult scenes at the beginning of the movie, but it was worth doing so. I particularly loved the relationship between the main character and the woman who becomes his wife, and also the scenes between him and his daughter.
