'Ordinary People' won the Oscar. People say it should have been 'Raging Bull'. Personally, I think 'The Shining' is probably the 'best' film of the year, being so highly-crafted, cinematic and spellbinding. However, I don't 'love' it, so much as deeply admire it. That's why 'Airplane' gets my top spot for the year. Despite being an almost scene-for-scene brazenly-direct parody of 'Zero Hour' 1957 (see it!), Airplane is probably the film of 1980 which has brought me the most joy overalll, and is delivering still all these decades later. . Many of the movies of this year are stone classics of any self-respecting 80s childhood: Empire Strikes Back (of course), Superman 2, Flash Gordon, Animalympics, Watcher in the woods, Smokey and the Bandit 2 etc . Then, as a movie-loving teenager, 1980 had it's fair share of classic cinema shocks waiting in store: The Fog, Friday 13th, Altered States, Fame, Shogun Assassin, The Long Good Friday, The Elephant Man, Dressed To Kill etc . As a more mature adult, 1980 remains rich pickings for beautiful and thought provoking movies: Somewhere In Time, Melvin and Howard, Tom Horn, Atlantic City, Loulou, Heaven's Gate, Coal Miner's Daughter etc - all still sun-kissed by the last of that fading late '70s sunlight. Nostalgia, introversion, sweet melancholia, naturalism and character studies - all classic 70s movie traits, still at play. . The 1980s had just begun and therefore were yet to be culturally defined. So of course movies of 1980 would still feel a bit 1970s. However the one movie of 1980 that seemed to anticipate accurately the moods and attitudes of the decade that followed was 'American Gigolo'. The emphasis on style and selfishness. Slick, sexy and materialist. Suddenly the punks, the hippies and all those garish big collars and flares of the 1970s were beginning to look dated. . Hope you find a new gem or two for yourself on this list. Enjoy.

As a critic:

1. The Shining 2. Raging Bull 3. The Elephant Man 4. Airplane 5. The Empire Strikes Back 6. Kagemusha 7. The Blues Brothers 8. The Long Good Friday 9. Gregory's Girl 10. American Gigolo
