**** 1/2 A witty satire on social and cultural differences, characterized by an often cynical sense of humor and a story full of psychological shades and different feelings but thank god lacking in annoying sentimentalism. I love how the characters are developed and how they interact with each other in a natural, believable yet entertaining manner. Great dialog and acting. People who are not interested in seeing this unique modern French comedy would deserve to be stuck in some sort of limbo, forced to watch 'Bridget Jones' every single day for all eternity and beyond!

9/10 Lina Wertmüller's ultimate masterpiece, is also her most controversial and disturbing. An effective example of how irony can be cleverly and subtly used in cinema to describe human dramas such as, in this case, Holocaust, prostitution and mafia. In particular, the contrast of comedy/drama is personified in the character of Pasqualino, superbly played by Giancarlo Giannini, funny and very intense at the same time. Compared to another acclaimed (not by me) Italian Holocaust comedy like 'La vita è bella', 'Pasqualino Settebellezze' appears more grothesque, cynical, audacious and anti-heroic, in my opinion far superior in every aspect - from the more complex story and characters to the flawless direction/acting, to the hypnotic use of music and visuals. So, the moral is: people should watch less Benigni and a few more Wertmüller.
